What's happened to this place? I walked through two of the three floors of menswear without meeting a soul; there simply were no staff! Finally I saw someone lounging in a chair with a device in hand and asked if he were staff. In the most aloof possible voice, without getting up, he replied, how can I help you? Almost no salesmen and the one there was snotty. I was prepared for the expensive clothes but not to have to beg for the privilege of buying them. Excellent service: Staff provides extra special service to long term, valued customers: e.g., mailing items accidentally left in the store "overnight" to your home, scouring the internet for an item you want but they no longer have in stock -- they'll get it in the store for you to try on - no strings attached. Custom Kiton clothing, jackets, coats: Kiton offers bespoke fabrics, all hand-sewn in Italy, so the $12.5K price tag mentioned by one reviewer as more than the cost of a RT sprint to Savile Row is out of context: people who order $12.5K Kiton suits or coats are not inclined to care about saving $3-4K on a custom suit if it's made from inferior fabrics and machine sewn in a sweat shop by immigrants in Britain, even if it fits fabulously. Also, you can always order a "custom" suit online, made in Korea, for a lot less than even Nordstrom -- ask any bank officer, b/c that's where they order their suits. Wilkes Bashford offers luxury brands (Kiton, Brunello Cucinelli, Caroline Herrera, Peter Cohen, Veronica Beard to name a few), custom-measured bespoke attire from "trunk show" luxury brands, custom shoe color/design bespoke selection from "trunk show" luxury brands, and has, in recent years, been expanding their designer lines to reflect the taste of a younger clientele. Their merchandise is mostly "traditional", as opposed to "conservative". "Conservative" sounds stuffy, which W-B is not. Basic retail service 101: Greeting customers! I received no welcome when I walked into this "fine establishment". I was saying hello to EVERYONE, and I got nothing. I was looking for a specific brand of jewelry (saw it on their website, and all the associates seem to just blow me off. I asked...they just pointed to the stairs. When I finally got to the correct floor, the associate had her dog roaming around the selling floor! Yes, it had a lease on, but it was still raining around without and any care in the world. Very unprofessional. If it's a service dog, you need to have it under your control at all times. Period. I finally found the jewelry I was looking for and the associate said they didn't have any sizes available in the store. I thanked her and then she just disappeared. No chance for any other assistance. At a place like this, I wanted to at-least get a "hello"', "can I help you with something?", "I know that that's not available, but I think that this would look great". I even called Max Mara and they told me they would not be able to get it in until next Fall season, so I was super excited to see it in my size. This is the place for you IF: 1. You want to pay a ridiculous amount of money of clothing which was at its peak back when Joe Montana still roamed the turf at Candlestick. I am talking double breast jackets at laughable prices. 2. Snotty employees who think their shit doesn't stink, who at the end of the day, are in retail, on the same playing field as someone at Macys, Sax 5th, etc. Let me get specific. I walked in wearing some of my classiest, cleanest, not so wrinkle free Old Navy cargo pants, (as why would I feel the need to get dressed up on a Saturday when running a wide spectrum of errands around/near downtown SF?) I immediately felt the judgmental gaze of the salesman who seemed to intentionally attempting to make me feel uncomfortable. No worries, however, and I proceed to the upper floors to see what kind of labels and stuff they had on hand. Some of the items looked great and worth the cost. Other stuff reminded of what really old people would wear in Manhattan. All of it had a very high markup. They are not about high volume sales here. I ended up not buying anything and was in there less than a half hour. Interesting that they would shun someone for not wearing the same level of clothing, or not perceive someone as not having money simply because they are dressed casually. So I came to this store with my fiance to find him a suit for a party. It was our first time there, so we really didn't know what to expect. A close friend of ours recommend the store to us because of WB's high quality suits. And yes, right as I walked in - I noticed two things: 1. the customers who were being served were all Caucasians and wearing their gucci/chanels 2. a male employee blocked our pathway and scanned my fiance from head to toe. In short, (literally about 5 min?) the man basically told us that their high quality suits are out of our price range (BTW, he didn't ask us what our price range was), and that we should try the neighboring store, Couture, because that store would apparently "meet our needs". Perhaps it was because we were not wearing brand name outfits...or maybe it was that we were not Caucasians. Either way, thank you Wilkes Bashford, because Couture did meet our needs - high quality clothes and terrific service. Too bad they never knew that cost was not the critical issue for us...well, more like they never bothered to find out. I'm going to preface this review by saying that my experience here was with one particular salesman for all of maybe 10 minutes. I cannot speak to their other salesmen/women -- from what I see in the reviews, some of them are actually not too bad. The quality of the suits will only be the best and I recognize that that is important as well. If you are interested in buying a high-end suit and dress like you are going to do so, then this place, from what I can tell, is the place to go. My brother recommended Wilkes Bashford to me and I had been looking forward to getting a suit from here since I always liked my brother's taste. The moment my girlfriend and I walked in, a salesman in the corner saw us and sized us up. I didn't know it at the time, but I think that was right about when he decided that he was going to find a way to shoo us out of the store. In the middle of my explaining that I was looking for a suit, he asked me "how did you hear of us?" in a tone that made it clear that he really meant to ask "are you sure you're in the right store for your budget?" Nice. He then brings us to what was quite possibly their newest and nicest suit. As I put the jacket on, I think the smile on his face said "You feel this suit? Enjoy it. You'll never wear something this nice ever again." Thanks, friend. At this point he could see that I was a bit hesitant to go several times over the budget I had allocated for this purchase, so he brought us upstairs to the suits and sales section to see if "we have more luck there." Uh huh. You can probably guess where it went from here. He showed us a few more suits, but nothing in what he perceived as being in my wheelhouse. After what I'm sure was genuine frustration in his inability to find something that could work for me, he suggested that I go check out Couture. In his own words, "We (Wilkes Bashford) make great suits. Couture makes good suits." Translation: "You're way out of your league. Please go where you belong." Awesome. After getting downstairs, he walked us to the exit -- no, wait, I'm sorry, he walked us to the EMERGENCY EXIT. Despite this egregious slap to the face, he did hold he door open for us, though. Nice guy. I can't completely blame him for his behavior because to some extent, he was right. Couture was definitely in my wheelhouse, but not because of my budget (I had the money to get one of his suits, but I just didn't WANT to), but because they weren't as pretentious as this guy. I'll remember to be dressed a little more appropriately next time I visit Wilkes Bashford. Oh, right, there probably won't be a next time. read more

I've been putting it off for a while now, but having made the effort going back year after year, I just can't take it any longer. Unless you literally walk up to an associate at Wilkes, tell them what you want and tell them you are there to buy right then, you cannot get customer service. Ironically, after recently being purchased they have stated their "new" goal is to lock down a younger clientele, taking advantage of the tech and "new money" in SF. What's ironic about that? That staff hasn't changed their old habits and couldn't care less. Repeatedly over the years I've gone in dressed for work and had no luck, floor after floor with anyone who is willing to do more than half heatedly smile. Once the private owner who runs the shoe department gave me the time of day, but only after I had purchased something (no joke). Case in point, on my most recent, and now final visit at 11am on a weekday, the gentleman at the front was obviously calling through a client list. Being he sat next to the entrance you could hear him politely mentioning new items and telling old/prospective clients how much they were looking forward to working together. Yet not one employee said hello to me, asked if I needed anything, and after I asked and was directed to the 3rd floor no one followed me to close a sale. For me this just crystalizes the fact that you must do them the favor of buying befor they do you any favors. So, I just can't help it any longer and can't even justify a second star for the lines they carry, their wonderful shoes, or SF history. They plain don't know what customer service means unless you're willing to spend thousands upon thousands, and this lack of willingness to expand on their client base (not with product but with client care) is painfully evident no matter what time, day or year I've headed in. VB is no fashionishta. I say this not knowing what exactly a fashionista is. But whatever it is I am not. My wardrobe is not filled with high end fashion nor is it ever cutting edge. They know in detail about the eight million types of wools and can tell you exactly how each will react when it comes in contact with water or if it will shrivel in hot weather. They can customize suits for people like me who have are not the perfect body type. It's not just about size, it's about fit. If you are short, tall, big, average or just plain funky Wilkes Bashford will put together that perfect suit that you will own and wear for years. Customer service here is spot near perfect. OK, listen, don't shop here if you're looking for a bargain. This is not Boston's Finlene's Basement... I made my FIRST purchase at Wilkes Bashford about a month ago. It was a pair of shoes for [much more than I typically spend]. They didn't have the ones I wanted in stock here, but I tried on a similar pair, and they then had the ones I wanted shipped up from their other store. Now here is what I paid for: .5.) The glass of bourbon while getting waited on hand and foot. 1.) As soon as the shoes were delivered to the SF location, my salesperson had them walked over to my office. 2.) I put them on that day and wore them for about 3 hours while walking around the city. I got a huge blister on both my heals. 3.) I called my salesperon (direct line) and left a voice message. He called back immediately. 4.) He first gave me an out to return them if I wanted - probably sees buyer's remorse often. When I said I wanted the shoes, just didn't want them to give me blisters, he said no problem. Bring them down and we will have someone break them in for you... 5.) When I FINALLY brought them down, about 2 weeks after that conversation, (which had I known I would be too busy to walk them down, I'm nearly certain they would have someone down to pick them up) I spoke with a different salesperson - the person I initially dealt with was not working. He knew almost instantly that I had received blisters on my heals and that I needed them broken in. 6.) He took the shoes, without any paperwork, etc. Already had all my info from my past transaction. When I said I was in the market for a sport coat, he said, last time the sales person that helped you with suits (which I didn't buy) was XXXX, he is here today - let me page him. Then of course after looking at 2500 sport coats for a few minutes I realized it was going to be unnecessary for him to be bothered... Keep in mind, this isn't the same person that helped me with my initial sale. I don't even remember him being present when it all happened. This level service is 50% what you are paying for - the other half is the product. Got my shoes back. They are perfectly worn in - like I've been wearing them for years. I didn't ask how they did it, don't care really. Just very happy with my purchase. I will be shopping here more and more often as time goes by. read more

I'm not a clothes-horse anymore (not since my parents gently shoved me out of their house), but back in the day, I would take the BART from Freak-mont to Union Square where my ex-gf and I would take a whole day shopping. I. Magnin first, then while she went to wherever it is she went, I headed on over to Wilkes-Bashford. Yes - everything here is reeeeaaally expensive, but the clothes are so damn cool and made with such great quality. Yes - the sales people are either snooty or pushy, but I've long learned how to summon them when I needed their services and ignore them when I just wanted to look. And yes - Um, I don't really have a third point, but I wanted to follow the "Rule of Three". Anyhoo, if you can afford it or if you just want to get ideas for what the "glitterati" is wearing so you can duplicate their look at the Gap or wherever it is you shop, then head over to Wilkes Bashford. read more

Here I am sick in a Hotel across the country & all I can think of is getting into my bed back at home. The bed here is very comfy, it has all the high end bedding you'd expect, but nothing is better than my bed at home. I miss my bed so much. Why you ask? It all began when I was a little girl. My Daddy always said, "Don't bitch about how bad you sleep if you are sleeping on cheap sheets." Were we rich? No, but my Daddy believed that if you bought something it should last, which meant it was usually expensive. He would take us to Wilkes Bashford and buy Pratesi linens. Pratesi has been in business since 1906 and they have the highest quality linens which, when you think about having linens that you can pass on to your children, are worth the money you spend. I suggest you invest in Pratesi because the first sheet set I bought was in 1984 and I still use them. I always buy white, because it goes with everything and it's classic, no dyes mean no allergies and something about white sheets just turn me on. The result of Pratesi: Sleeping on a cloud. Here's my recipe for the best bed. Mattress Covers! A must for keeping buggies away! Fitted sheet Feather Mattress (down only) approximately 2-3" and no less than 500 TC. Top Sheet Coverlet Duvet or Quilt Slip Top (only in winter) I like 4 pillows, covered and pillow cased. I only have white sheets. You can guy Pratesi on the internet but I've tried and have gotten inferior sets or damaged goods they try to pass off as "discount" Pratesi. Don't fall for that, go to the place where you'll be guaranteed original and not damaged goods. I'll do a review of Wilkes Bashford but not now. read more

I walked into this store once out of curiosity and immediately felt about 30 years too young (I'm 20). Nonetheless, the staff was very nice to me- one woman thought of something nice to say about my ensemble, and another, just as I was about to leave, stopped me and sent me up to the fifth floor where he said there were things I would like. There, another saleswoman looked down her nose at me (well, technically, up; she was pretty short) and asked if I had "ever worn Margiela." No, I'm a student. I don't have that much money. On the whole it's a very conservative store for old-money San Franciscans who like a lot of sequins and glitter with their eveningwear (to the reviewer who called it 'too avant-garde', I have no idea what you think avant-garde is, but Wilkes Bashford would be more like 'derriere-garde'). I was a little hesitant to visit this place after seeing the mixed reviews here on Yelp, so I went everywhere else I could think of before coming here. Wilkes and Bashford was really a last resort for me. I visited Neiman Marcus, Barneys, Ferragamo, and pretty much everywhere else I could think of around Union Square. I couldn't find anything I liked though and relented. I figured they must have something. Was I wrong. They didn't have anything, they had EVERYTHING. Their shoe selection easily blew away every other place I went. Luckily for me, they had a bomb sale going on. I managed to pick up a pair of John Lobbs for 40% off. Granted, they were still waaaay more expensive than any other pair of shoes I've bought, but for what I hear, they're totally worth it. The store clerks were also very nice. Super helpful and very personable. They even threw in some complimentary shoe polish. Not much, but hey, it's the thought that counts right? Of course, I would still recommend wearing some decent looking clothes, but you don't have to be a millionaire to get taken seriously. I can't comment about their other offerings, but if your serious about shoes, and willing to lay down some serious money, then this place is for you. read more

I'm in a 3 star kind of mood. I went here to get a present. It's nice to get a little something from a store like this because they do packaging so well and it seems special. For gifty items head downstairs. They have some coffee table books, sheets and towels, baby stuff, etc. I'd always wanted to come here but was a little intimidated and I find I'm usually in Union Square on a Sunday and they are closed Sunday and Monday. I found a coffee table book for my gift - nice. Then, with a dose of crazy, there was this over-the-top candelabra that I just had to have. It's not like anything else in my apartment but I was drawn to it. So, I have them wrap them both up and they send me to the counter on the ground floor to pay. It takes them a while to wrap things up so I wander around. No one followed me and they were generally courteous. After I saw my things were ready I went up to the counter and said, "I think those are mine." The guy starts quizzing me doubting that it's my stuff. After a moment, a manager comes up and takes over but I was uncomfortable. The gift was a big hit and I love my candelabra but I have to say that I will think twice about going here again. read more

M'eh. Great suits. Beautiful show room. I am poor. Well, not insanely poor, but after shopping here, I felt like it was time to curl up in my cardboard box for a nap. I was almost talked into a $2400 suit. Almost. But I really didn't need the sales pitch from Salesman School 101. - Bring out the suit way out of the customers league. - Then bring out a cheaper, but still out of customer's league suit. - Then haul out the suit noone will buy and talk trash on it. - Finally bring out the one suit you want to sell the customer. Don't get me wrong, If I go from sous chef to executive sous chef at any point, I will probably go and get the suit this guy wanted to sell me. And he was really friendly. But the fiance wanted to see other suits, and he tried to explain to her that her reasons for wanting to see other suits was wrong. Tons of fruity salesman had spent tons of fruity time training and then specially picking out a very limited selection, from which the super fruity salesman I was lucky to have gracing me with his attention had spent his specially trained fruity sense to pick one lucky suit out. This guy was really friendly. Very nice, but set on his salespitch. Now this review is only for those of you who make under $100k/per annum. I know from when I worked at Campton Place next door that if you are super rich and pop in this place to shop, they will roll out the red carpet, including wine service and specially made crudite platters. Alas, even if I were to win the lottery, I would never be mistaken for a member of this luxury-class club. Sak's Fifth Avenue for Men is a nice alternative. read more

For those of you who have a chip on your shoulder about WB only catering to Caucasians, let it be known that while I was there for several hours today having a great experience with my wife of M&C extraction, a lovely couple who are Asian (from two rather disparate countries) came in with their daughter and bought a wonderful item from our salesperson Randy while I was being fitted. it was like the freaking UN in there this PM and I was the only one representing Europe. Unlike Randy who is great, not all their sales folks have a style (of dress and demeanor) that you are going to click with and they may not have the follow-up, willingness and ability to work with their potential clientèle in an appropriate fashion (no pun intended). You may even get some attitude from poor performers trying to blame their clients for their lack of judgement and professionalism but one can also get a load of "tude" at Bed Bath & Beyond.....such is life. All and all, if you want beautiful, unique and stylish clothes and you are willing to drop some real coin this is a great place to spend some time and a lot of money. read more

I went into Wilkes Bashford about a year ago with my boyfriend, wearing beat up jeans and a shirt. I'm 27, not white, and don't make over six figures, so I'm definitely not the target audience. I was very surprised when the salesperson--I believe her name was Kathy--came up and talked to me like any of their customers. She did not make me feel "sized up" as other reviewers have pointed out. In fact, she took me on a tour of various floors in the store, gave me her business card, and even offered me to come to my apartment to look at my wardrobe and make suggestions. She never made me feel like I was not worth her time. She even said I could call and make appointments with her. I still have yet to buy anything, because the price is still expensive. Also, I have a rather casual work atmosphere, so I don't need to dress up too formally. Nonetheless, the experience of visiting the store left a good lasting impression. I'm giving this place only 4 stars, because the general aesthetic is not at all geared towards people in their late 20s. It good place to get good service and business clothes. But for general streetwear, The Archive down the street is a much better alternative. read more

They both walked me around the whole store and just let me have fun. I wasn't pressured into buying anything but ended up with a lot stuff. And then I see this gorgeous brown cashmere three button Brioni in the window and decide to go for a closer look. Long story short? This place blows. The elevator smelt like ass. The carpets needed replacing last decade. And, yes, I know that I don't look like I buy $6000 suits and you would be right but if you ever want me to spend that kind of scratch when I do have it, don't act like I'm going to rob the place when I don't. read more

This is the place for you if you got a bonus from Goldman-Sachs this year. The trunkshows are nice, as you can individualize your garments, and you aren't likely to be running into anyone else wearing your clothes. The downside is they take several months to come in and may eat up your entire year's clothing budget. If you're not a person of means and money to burn, two words: WAREHOUSE SALE. You can find beautiful things 70% -95% off. It used to be bi-yearly, but appears only to be happening in February these days. Great time to stock up on men's button down shirts and sweaters, as well as women's dresses and jackets. The Warehouse sale is like one of those lovely dreams you never want to wake up from, because inevitably you realize it's not real. However, in this case, you'll have to pinch yourself in disbelief. I spent over 6K in this store expecting to a get high quality suit with nice some nice dress shirts and accessories. What a disappointment. It took four months to get one suit and three shirts altered, and even after that, the shirt sleeves on a $700 dress shirt were so long, I looked like a clown! They hardly offered an apology much less any compensation for the fact that they had my money and I no suit. Completely frustrated, I ended up taking everything to a tailor down in LA where I work to get Wilkes alterations corrected costing me another $400. What I got for the price was less than average. Never like to give a bad rating, but bottom line, these guys deserve it. I'll never walk into that store again. read more

While Mr. Bashford owned the store and was actively participating in the selection of merchandise sold in the store. I understand his participation is no longer the case in the clothing that is available in the store. This is obvious. As the clothing that used to be available had a unique aesthetic. My sales person during this time was a little guy with a lot of personality and wore lots of color. A former ballet dancer that Mr. Bashford saw something in and gave him the opportunity to sell beautiful luxurious clothes. Putting his theatrical personality and natural enthusiasm to good use in a new career. It turns out he has remarkable taste and could read personalities very well. My personal style is far from the same as Greg Gonzales's. Yet he was comfortable sharing the beautiful things that work for my social life and my career. At the same time helping to expand my comfort range of dressing. The combination of his knowledge of style and people and their personalities made for a wonderful relationship. Along with this playful spirit. Made the entire experience of shopping at Wilkes wonderful and something I looked forward to repeating again and again. Greg is now at Neiman Marcus, San Francisco. I have bought dozens of pieces from Greg, including a special order of four Kiton shirts yesterday. Not once have I been in any way disappointed. I am always concerned about personal appearance, and have bought suits, jackets, shirts, and ties from large department stores and small boutiques all over the country. No other salesman, however, has ever been remotely close to Greg's level of service and excellence. I'm sure all of the people he assisted there at Wilkes felt the same. I've been shopping with him at Neiman Marcus and he's been doing the same wonderful things for me. Why the Mitchell's did not see to Greg's continued presence in the new store is a mystery and a decision of folly. He added so much personality to the store. This is about a relationship. Even though I preferred shopping in the intimate environment of Wilkes. I will go where Greg is. Not unlike many of his loyal clients, I am sure. I've been shopping here since they were on the other side of the street. It is one of the very best, and most expensive mens stores in the country. Kiton, Brioni, and other suit makers in the $4000 - $8000 range are here. I buy my suits arround the corner at Saks where they are only $3000. But here is the great thing about Wilkes. Have you ever noticed when one of these stores,(Saks, Neiman Marcus), have a shoe sale, suddenly the racks are filled with cheap crap that you never see any other time of the year at 30% off? Not Wilkes. Their shoe sales are always 50% off, and it is always some of their best merchandise. I will never spend $800 for a pair of dress shoes. But I will spend $400 for a pair of $800 shoes. Two sales a year, one in the summer one in the winter. When I bought my boss in here for the first time ten years ago, he ended up spending about $50,000 in a matter of months. I went there during a sale to pick up a pair of pants. I ended up getting 50% off a beautiful pair of linen pants by Loro Piana. So why the 3 star? The sales people weren't paying attention to me. How can you walk into an expensive boutique and not have sales person helping you? After picking out my pants and waiting 15 minutes to get someone's attention, I just try on the pants myself. The sales people SUCK! I will only shop there during sale and I will never pay full price at that place even though they have some nice cloth. read more
