Modern Luxury Magazine recently named Button Down the Best Boutique for Men's Clothing, and after visiting, I understand why. A careful walk through the store reminded me of the legendary Wilkes Bashford on Sutter Street, back in the 1980s. Like the original Wilkes, Button Down offers beautiful Italian and European styles, along with famous brands and their own private label. They also carry luxurious accessories for men and women. Greg, who had also worked at Wilkes in its heyday, helped me put together an entire ensemble. It was like a trip back in time, with the same quality, personal attention and service that is nearly impossible to find anymore. Great selection of mid-tier Italian brands at this cozy little shop! I absolutely loved the colors that they put together for their spring/summer collection. Will be back in fall to check out the men's fall/winter collections which are generally more suited to my personal palette preferences. I bought a fun pair of houndstooth patterned socks with a HOT PINK toe! Highly recommend swinging on by and seeing if there's anything that suits your fancy. read more

Both the sales staff and barbers in the back in this shop which also has clothes for women are great. I have been going here for almost three years and the barbers in the back have only changed once both David and Jake are friendly and give u exactly what u want. Every time I have bought clothes here I find excellent service and quality items which will last for years to come. Jim is the gentleman who usually assists me with my clothing options and Debora gave me an excellent barbershop recommendation to go to in Mayfair, London called G. F. Trumper. Bought a vest and it did not fit. It was cut way too tight. Returned it, but they do not do to refunds. Now stuck with a gift card that who knows if I will ever use it. In this day and age, too many other nice stores to shop at who will gladly do returns if there is a sizing issue. No successful retail chain or store would ever operate like this. Imagine Amazon not refunding your money or Costco, or Williams Sonoma and the list goes on. read more

The woman that had cut my hair for over eighteen years retired and I was looking for a replacement. I tried two other shops but was not happy with either. A friend told me about James at Button Down. I made an appointment online, showed up on time and got the haircut I was looking for. I scheduled another appointment then and there. Button Down is a very nice shop for men's and women's clothing as well. The staff is very helpful and as I was browsing I found a belt that I needed so it was a doubly good trip. I can always count on Button Down to have classic and stylish clothing. The staff is extremely helpful, particularly when I'm looking for me wife on Christmas eve! I know it's a go to store for men's clothing, but what is particularly appealing to me is I can find what I need in a quarter of the time it would take me to accomplish the same at the department stores downtown. And the staff was very careful about the social distancing and other precautions we're enjoying these days. I took a peak at the salon, "James" in the back - great decor with re-purposed 747 airplane carts and various Bourbons and whiskies to help give you the courage to soldier on. I was greeted by the saleswoman at the front counter. After getting help finding a bow tie I decided to take a look around the store to see what other items they may have. The man from the back room came and stood statuesque near the door and I had a shadow (the saleswoman) following me throughout the store. As a first time customer, the employees made me feel the most uncomfortable that I had ever felt in any store. Their stares could have burned a hole right through me. I felt more comfortable walking into Barney's wearing pajamas than I did walking into button down with a normal outfit. I've been a customer since Button Down was on Fillmore for myself and my wife because of their exquisite taste and selection. Yes, they have high-end brands which aren't always in within my budget but what the other reviewers failed to mention is that they have good price points--many less expensive but just as impeccable choices. I have several items that have lasted for years because of the fashion and quality. I've always found the sales staff very friendly and what is refreshing for me is perhaps what wasn't to a couple of reviewers: they're not aggressive nor do they hang over you like many other stores which I avoid just for that reason.
