I LOVE this store! Gorgeous layout, gorgeous merchandise and a kind, warm, helpful staff. I met Michael through friends decades ago when it first opened and he has always had great style, and is a super nice guy to boot. Last December on a Sacramento St. Christmas evening stroll, a friend and I went in and I bought my husband a gorgeous tie and a lovely sweater for myself. That I will not likely see anyone else wearing! Yesterday we went in together looking for a great cashmere sweater for him and left with that (and a few other fabulous and elegant things). Micheal was there (looking stylish as usual) as did the whole staff. I am terrible with names but both of the gentlemen that waited on us were friendly and helpful; the store looked beautiful and Christmas-y. I wonder sometimes why I shop anywhere else! Button down is simply the best place to get a new treat for yourself or the man in your life. I have been going there for twenty years, at least. I have a gorgeous black evening coat, fabulous cashmere sweaters, Etro blouses, orange and blue raincoats, scarves I treasure for every day.I could go on and on.. I love working with Jim, and Michael if he's in town. I ALWAYS look better when I leave and browsing lifts my spirits. The clothes are chic but still tailored. Get over yourself Button Down. I had a credit and couldn't use it quick enough. I am utterly shocked by how I was treated. And hate to say it, but the attitude was placed on the wrong person...if you want to talk old school and sophistication, I'll be happy to share the boarding school I went to, let alone, let you borrow my family crest to place on one your $2,000 blazers. I felt like a male version of pretty woman in this store. And the 'you're lucky to even be in this store' attitude is laughable. I can get far nicer shirts at Pink for half the price and proper customer service. Entirely underwhelmed and will never spend a cent or send anyone here to shop again. read more

An unnatural act was committed at Button Down! That is, the sales staff was unnaturally courteous and polite. Is this the result of my review? Modesty prevents me from taking any credit. Or was it the unflagging march of other bad reviews? That being said, the nature of Button Down's courteousness is unnatural in that the current sales staff acts polite the way you might act when your mother in-law "requests" that you to take out the garbage. "Yes, ma'am." "But of course." "Right away." As of course, you grit your teeth. Is it better than before? Well, yes...but still not pleasant. Then you must ask, should shopping be pleasant? Beautiful clothes, great quality, very very expensive, but good sales during the year. Been shopping here for a decade or more but we just dropped in during a sale to look around and were treated like poo by a saleswoman. My husband wanted to try on a sports coat and asked the saleswoman what size she thought he needed and she replied, "I don't know. What size do you wear?" in a real "why are you bothering me" tone of voice. Think we've outgrown this spot and anyway this will teach us we shouldn't be spending this much on clothes. For half the price, infinitely better service, and far superior return policies, my money will go to a dozen other boutique stores, or even Nordstrom. Hell ... I'll shop at a thrift store before Button Down, again. Not only are many of the staff and management pompous and self-important. The prices are astronomical, and the post-purchase service is nothing short of shameful. My experience: Despite the outrageous prices, I decided to support this boutique local business. Unlike you, dear reader, what I failed to do is read the reviews. While I was shopping for shirts, my girlfriend bought me a sweater. It was very sweet, but I don't wear sweaters. Of course, it sat on my dresser, literally unworn. I decided to exchange it and get something I'd be more likely to wear. I went back to the store a few weeks after the sale. But, now that I wanted to exchange something, instead of spend multiple thousands of dollars on a small handful of shirts, I was treated like a 2nd class citizen. I was told that the sweater was "kind of bare", so they couldn't accept it for an exchange. I wasn't even offered a "we're sorry" apology. They simply handed the sweater to me, turned, and walked away. I had literally only tried the sweater on. Total time wearing it was maybe 10 minutes, and it was "kind of bare"?! I guess a lame subjective perception is good enough for Button Down to deny an exchange. Fitting response from that staff and definitely in-line with the other reviews. read more

My husband went in to update his wardrobe with some new shirts and since he only wears button down collared shirts, this was the place. They have a huge selection of these in all kinds of snappy patterns - stylish, modern, and also traditional looks. He happened to be the only person in the store. Since I wasn't shopping with him, he needed a little bit of assistance. But, the two sales people were in conversation, and acted bothered to have to help him. This is just so old. In this economy, customer service is the call of the day. I guess this store really doesn't need to make money. Lucky them though - he still dropped half a K. Additionally, when I went in to pick up his shirts, they handed me a set of hung shirts in plastic and then when I told them I would be shipping them to him, they looked at me dumbfounded. Asked me if I wanted a bag instead. "Actually, do you have a box" I said, thinking that maybe they would fold them extra nice for me and put them in a box. They said "we only have gift boxes". Oh, I guess $500 doesn't qualify me to have three of their adorable striped precious gift boxes, even though any moron can figure out that three gift boxes will fit a whole lot nicer into one shipping carton than three loose expensive man sized button down shirts! I was done with their attitude, and left. Bye Bye Button Down. Nice merchandise but can do without the attitude. read more

An excellent neighborhood boutique that is a welcome(albeit more conservative) alternative to the Union Square shops (NM, WB, Barneys and Saks). I find that they have unique styles and, unlike the others, I find the staff to be friendly and helpful. I have been shopping here for 20 years now (beginning in my 20s) and they consistently help me look professional and sharp. read more

I went to Button Down last week to purchase a gift. It was suggested to me to look outside at the "sidewalk sale items", and I found a cashmere cardigan that I decided to purchase. It was "marked down" to $255.00. After I had paid for it, I asked for a gift box and was told by the sales woman that "it would be too confusing for the staff if we gave you a box" ... apparently only full price purchases were given a box... FIRST, she informed me that there were no exhanges or refunds for sale items, which I acknowledged would be fine SECOND, the sales receipt is STAMPED IN BIG BLACK LETTERS "No Refunds or Exchanges on Sale Items" THIRD, the amount of the receipt was for the SALE PRICE, not the full price ----- my question: Just how INCOMPETENT are their staff (and management, for that matter) that they would be "CONFUSED" by giving someone a gift box??? I have never returned or exchanged something without a receipt and would not expect to. Do they not track their merchandise codes??? How could they possibly not know which items were sold at a reduced price??? Is the quality of their merchandise reduced with the price??? That is bad management and just plain bad manners... Every other retailer I have purchased from has OFFERED me a gift box for my purchase without even asking... I cannot believe this place is still in business... I will never return to their store and after sharing my experience with numerous friends, suffice it to say, they have cost themselves a substantial loss of revenue and reputation. A word to the wise (and perhaps, "confused"): If you are in the customer service business, you should treat each purchase and each customer with the same level of courtesy, because you never know who you're talking to ... read more
