The mashed potatoes were meh, nothing special, really expected more. Our server was either new, untrained, disinterested or having a bad day. Perhaps unhappy that only two of us ordered drinks which were slow to arrive. Our server was not very attentive, did not stop by to ask if 'everything was alright' and missed out on a second round of drinks being ordered. However, our server was far more attentive to a nearby table of 6, all of whom ordered drinks, perhaps that's the motivation to provide friendly service. No matter, we've been here before, the ambience is good, the food, with one exception this time was enjoyed and as we attend the theater next door we will more than likely be back. Delicious warm bread with whipped butter, yummy mushroom side was the perfect accompaniment to the large bone-in ribeye we shared, which the among the best steak I've ever had! Full of flavor, and cooked to perfection. The chef even came out to our table to see if we enjoyed our meal.. and, YES we did! Then more recently I went with a small party for dinner at the same Ruth's Chris, anticipating a similar top-notch experience - NOT! We were seated in a dismal side dining room - no warmth or character, just a dull monochrome room with tables and chairs and a few pieces of confetti sprinkled on the white table cloths to presumably give a more festive note (really???). Each of us got the $60 special and it was truly not up to Ruth's Chris standards. I think the components of the "special" must be of a lower quality than if you order from the regular a la carte menu as it did not compare at all with my previous experience. Previously we were served warm and yummy bread that tasted fresh-baked. This time the bread was served at room temperature. The special $60 special dinner included a salad and house salad I chose was a like they opened a bag of room temperature, grocery store mixed greens and threw on a cherry tomato and a few crouton cubes; bleu cheese dressing had a few chunks of something in it, but there was zero bleu cheese flavor - very blah! The smaller ribeye was cooked to correct Med Rare, but it was very greasy and utterly flavorless (not to be mistaken with their larger a la carte, juicy and flavorful ribeye) Ate only a few bites before I decided it wasn't worth eating. The Brussel sprouts side dish was very charred and swimming in greasy butter and/or bacon grease - just inedible. The 2 grilled shrimp looked pretty served on top of the ribeye, but they were flavorless aside from a kind of vague fishy taste. Garlic mashed potatoes were soppy, and drenched with butter (i.e. not at all fluffy). Chocolate cheesecake for dessert was best part of the meal, and I must say, this one thing was really delicious. Service was nice and helpful, but left us waiting both when we were ready to order and also when done with meal. All in all, this was not a $300+ experience! Buyer beware - Ask to be seated in main dining room (not one of those dreary side rooms). If you are prepared to pay crazy high prices for good food at this restaurant, DO NOT get the $60 special if you want a true Ruth's Chris quality meal. Better to splurge and order a la carte.

Parking is an issue it's in the plaza so a lot of parking spots. A mid-2026 revamp of the décor and menu at Johnny's Kitchen & Tap, together with a new business…read morename (under the same owner), has transformed the passé supper club-style restaurant into a contemporary sports bar. We could not agree more that the 1980s décor was looking tired and old, and the menu needed refreshing. The new decor is considerably brighter and also more spacious and open. But really now, do the north 'burbs need another sports bar? Without the old sound-absorbing surfaces, the noise level is considerably higher. A contemporary pop-rock soundtrack blasting from the speakers combines with commotion from the bar, making conversation difficult. The menu has been updated with additional apps, burgers (and other sandwiches), pizza, "Wok Out" bowls, and Tex-Mex. Thankfully, an assortment of the old school dinner entrees including wood-fired rotisserie specialties is still available. But there is no longer a separate menu of dinner specials (including the Three Course Supper). And, while entrée prices are unchanged or modestly higher, the tradeoff is that the entrées come with a single side dish whereas they previously included a bread basket and a choice of soup or salad. Currently a bowl of chicken tortilla soup is $5.95 and a garden salad ordered with an entrée is $3.00. We ordered the latter. The side salads here used to be generous in size, but what we got this time was a surprisingly skimpy serving with a puddle of water at the bottom of the bowl (which seems to be a trademark of their salads). We used to pay a modest upcharge to substitute a small Caesar or Greek salad, but now these upcharges are $7.00 and $8.00, respectively. Bummer! We expressed our dissatisfaction to our server and also a manager. Both were pleasant and understanding (I suspect they hear similar feedback from other diners). My Missus ordered a single pork chop BBQ-style ($18.95) and requested that it be broiled with sauce on rather than poured over after it was cooked. The kitchen neglected to follow this request. I ordered the cedar plank salmon ($29.95) and our friend ordered the chicken kabob ($22.95). Everything was very good but nothing really stood out. Value-wise, the current menu is overpriced. Sports bars are popular to the point where they have become very competitive. The places that are innovative and offer an upscale menu and - importantly - good value have the edge. Our experience at Lake Avenue Tavern was average at best. We will miss the old Johnny's (and the "oldies" soundtrack).

The portions of each were large and easy to share. The sauce with the grilled calamari was incredible. Moreover, all of the steaks were cooked to perfection and very tender.
