Had not been there since before the pandemic and they have not lost a step or closed like many restaurants in the area. This was a birthday and Mother's Day dinner for six and we felt Prairie Grass would be a good place to celebrate. Good choice. Our lovely server Claire took drink orders and allowed us time to talk and enjoy each others company. We brought a bottle of wine and that was not a problem and Claire took out the cork. Everyone raved about their food. My daughter had the white fish, her sister in law had a burger, her mother in law had a nice salad, my son in law had two chicken breasts, and I shared a beet salad and the tuna entree with my wife. All delicious based on the groups comments. My tuna came with shiitake mushrooms, and we substituted wild rice for a vegetable. Excellent. There were two birthdays and our server brought two chocolate treats with candles for the two girls. I also had the Mango ice cream and a turtle candy. The turtle candy was the one weak point of the meal. As we all know, the price of dining out has truly increased and I feel you really need to get a bang for your buck at most upscale restaurants and I would consider Prairie Grass in that category. The food is the standout thing here. The crispy chicken melted in my mouth and the chocolate pudding was to die for. The staff could have been better. They seemed annoyed with us. And we could have been annoying because of the ants that were accompanying our window and occasionally made their way to our table. We complained. No one seemed concerned. No attempt to get rid of them (we kept trying to divert them), move us or even acknowledge their existence. But might have been the best chicken I've ever had. read more

Rude person at front desk, very uppity, went for St. Patrick's day, the menu lacked most of what you'd want on St. Patty's day. The corned beef dinner was more of a big bowl of soup, with carrots, corned beef and enough cabbage for one fork full. There was no horseradish sauce or mustard offered for the table. It was extremely unsatisfying and the price for a bowl of "corned beef and cabbage" was $31.00. Extremely not worth it, very old outdated bathrooms also, kinda dirty. Celebrated my birthday with a large party of 16. The service was fabulous, all the food came out at the same time, and was incredibly delicious. The cauliflower soup was so velvety smooth, the lamb burger was very authentic, and the sticky toffee date came with ice cream was a crowd pleaser. The coconut cream pie was the best I've had because its made with fresh coconut. I highly recommend you make a trip to Northbrook to check out this gem. read more

On a Saturday night, this place is packed and we waited 30 min for our table. You get lots of time before ordering drinks or food as it gets really busy and possibly understaffed. Plenty of parking. The food wasn't bad, so that's not what this is about. I ordered salmon medium rare and that's how it arrived, so that was good. Before dinner I ordered a Jack Daniel's on the rocks, my wife ordered a Chopin martini. She enjoyed her drink, mine was definitely NOT Jack Daniels. When the waiter came over, I told him to tell the bartender that I would give him $50 if that was Jack Daniel's. The waiter, who was very pleasant and attentive otherwise, hemmed and hawed and stammered a bit and finally said that my drink was Evan Williams. Anyone who drinks Jack Daniels knows exactly what it tastes like and nothing else tastes the same. The waiter mumbled some alternative explanations but the fact is that he knew it wasn't what I ordered when he gave it to me. Five minutes later he brought me another drink and told me it was Jack Daniel's Black Label, a version of the Tennessee whiskey they don't even offer. While all Jack has black labels, they don't offer a specific "Black Label" as if it were an upgrade. Of course there's Gentleman Jack, Single Barrel Select, etc, but no "Black Label," since the black label is just part of their brand. Anyway, I didn't drink the second one either and they took it off the bill, but WTF? Why not just be honest? I can deal with no Jack, there was probably something other than Evan Williams that I would've enjoyed. Not for nothing, but the drink menu listed the Chopin martini at $14, but on the bill it was $14 PLUS a $2 upcharge for Tito's, as if Tito's should be an upcharge from anything. As I said, though, the food was fine. They just need a little work on transparency at the bar. read more

Chef George is amazing & everything on the menu is wonderful!!! We had a spectacular evening of drinks, dinner & deserts!! We arrived at 730 w a party of 6 on a Friday night and were promptly seated at a nice round table. Easy to speak w everyone & the noise is just enough to provide background but still allow for easy conversation. Service was perfect, always there to make a suggestion, refill water glasses or get another drink. I had the special which was a flat iron steak + incredibly delicious Yukon gold potatoes- steak was perfect but I could have licked the dish the potatoes were served in. Others had: the chicken (awesome) the bun less burger (same) skirt steak (Scott finished before anyone else it was so good) and the white fish (I sampled - light, fluffy and wonderful. By the way, the bread they served was fantastic and I would go back for that alone!! Deserts. Where do I begin?? Probably w the chocolate chips cookie w the ice cream was my absolute fav. A scrumptious dinner venue hidden away in the corporate building. The service is very fast! The food - the sirloin burger is truly a delight. It's soft and tender topped up with a blue cheese topping of sorts. The wedge potato's are a whole other delight! Crispy and substantial. I always order an extra side of these. It's a perfect blend of crispy outside and edges with a warm, soft middle. The half baked chicken was wonderful: the skin was perfectly crispy and the wild rice gave nice texture. The true star of the show was the pumpkin it was served with - buttery sweet with a crunch from the sunflower seed it was served with. It complimented the savory chicken dish so nicely. The shepherd's pie was hearty and delicious! Soft creamy mashed potatoes in the top with piping hot meat and veggies! The desserts are always the perfect close to the night. Not too sweet but perfectly savory. I recommend the warm cake. Also, if you can; their filet mignon is wonderful as well! Not pictured here, but it's usually my go to! Other recommendations: filet mignon, skirt steak, and crispy Brussels sprouts. read more

Pretty setting and menu had nice looking selections. Burrata special was supposed to have strawberry rhubarb compote but showed up with plums instead. It was good but no one alerted us to the change. Was really looking forward to the strawberry rhubarb. What if we didn't like plums? Ordered nut crusted halibut special which turned out to be either overcooked or just a not very good piece as it was overly dry. Waiter was not particularly attentive so took a while to find someone to complain to. Requested a new piece which was delicious, but waiter never even checked with me to see what had been the original problem or if I was pleased with the replacement piece. Had a family dinner for a special occasion (holiday birthday). The good: Easy reservation for 7 people on a Friday night and our table was lovely. Sometimes it is difficult with larger parties for everyone to talk but the large square table with plenty of room for two people on each side was a high point and quite unusual. Also, the restaurant was not overly loud. While it was not full, there were definitely enough people for noise. But the restaurant did not make things worse with loud music that everyone had to talk over. This was a definite plus. Also the restaurant had good options for bottles of wine that were not terribly priced. The not so good: the menu was limited, which can be great, but felt uninspired. And while the prices were fine in general, they didn't feel fine when the bill came and we all discussed how much we liked our meals. And similar to other reviews, we felt a little rushed and experienced overly enthusiastic table bussing. read more

Came in last night with my dad and brother to celebrate my birthday. I've only been here once many years ago so I couldn't remember what it was like. I was slightly hesitant after reading some of the reviews but decided to go based on my instinct. I am so glad I trusted my intuition because my meal was delicious!! We had made a reservation which wasn't necessary for a Monday evening; when we arrived around 6pm the restaurant was mostly open tables. Yet as our meal went on the restaurant did consistently fill up, never to capacity though. As we were seated, right away the server came over to great us and take our drink orders. The waiters were observant and on top of filling water, asking how we were doing, and coming back around for the next course. We ordered the Brussels sprouts and vegetable root soup for appetizers! YUM! The sauce the Brussels sprouts were sitting in was amazing! Same with the vegetable root soup, it had a creamy taste and was delicious. For the main course, I ordered the mushroom bean veggie burger. Wow! I think this was the best veggie burger I've ever had! My dad and brother ordered the fish and chips, they weren't as impressed as I was. They were hoping for more greasy meal but said they were both happy because the food made their bodies feel better than a greasy fish and chips would've. Their meals were unconventional "fish and chips"; It wasn't what they expected but they said it still tasted good. The best part is that when they came to sing happy birthday to me, they did so loud enough just so our table could hear and not the entire restaurant heard. They served a delicious chocolate cupcake and additionally we ordered the vegan pumpkin chai ice cream. Oh my goodness!!! The vegan pumpkin chai ice cream tasted like you were eating a cake but in ice cream form and it didn't taste "vegan" either. Overall so yummy and I will definitely be back soon. I have dined at Prairie Grass many times and have always had a great meal until tonight. The service was very poor. Restaurant was empty upon on our arrival and had to wait 15 minutes before anyone approach us. The waiter had zero personality. Everyone ordered the white fish which was over cooked. Everyone's!! I informed the waiter that I did not want the fish and he did offer to bring another dinner which I declined. He informed me that he told the manager. There was no compensation not even an apology. I was still charged the full amount. I spoke to the manager and informed him everyone's fish was overcooked which was four dinners. He said he would inform the chef and that was it! A very disappointing dinner from a great restaurant. It will be a while before I return. read more

It's one of those places that feels just as right for a low-key weeknight dinner as it does for a more celebratory meal. This restaurant has a chef with a culinary reputation. The food was once enjoyable. The meal we received ( carryout) was terrible except for the usually delicious Brussels sprouts. I spoke by phone to a rude manager who hung up on me without saying a word. The meatloaf had shards of bone in it. The fish was so dry it was inedible. Onion rings were raw onion covered in pano. Is cooking the onion now too much to ask of a restaurant. We won't be coming here again for food you would not give to your dog. Extra tip required for rudeness. My husband and I went to Prairie Grass Cafe for a date night dinner. The dining room has a designed by Frank Lloyd Wright feel to it. There was something about the layout that made the room feel a bit sparse with our table far away from any other table. Perhaps they removed tables during the pandemic but haven't put them back yet? Regardless, the reason to go is for the food and the food doesn't disappoint. We ordered the crispy shrimp rolls as our appetizer. They were delicious with bites of shrimp coming through. The two rolls were cut into four pieces and served on a beautiful glass platter with a built in compartment for the sweet and sour dipping sauce. For dinner I ordered the bbq short rib special and my husband ordered the skirt steak minus the onion topping. Both meals were beautifully plated and excellently cooked. We ended with the made to order chocolate chip cookie which came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and fresh made chocolate shell topping. It was a perfect dessert to share. Prairie Grass Cafe has an amazing wine selection and offers other cocktails and mocktails to choose from. My husband had a rum and Coke and I tried the rose tost mocktail. I enjoyed the mocktail and would order it again. The service is friendly and efficient. Almost too efficient. From start to finish our visit was a little more than an hour. Tasty food, friendly service, upscale establishment. All traits of Prairie Grass Cafe. Which is to say, it's a good choice for a meal out. A group of five of us cane for dinner during the week and had an enjoyable experience. Our waiter, despite seeming like he had more than a few tables to cover, was calm, cool, and collected the entire time. The right balance of hands on/off that you'd want. The menu has a little bit of everything, from the "sexy" Caesar salad to several options of fish, it was hard to choose. I went with a go-to for me: (skirt) steak & frites. The serving was actually the absolute perfect size for me and everything tasted delicious, particularly the sauce drizzled over the steak. Others in my group had fish: salmon (3x) and tilapia. There were zero complaints. The one thing I do want to note, simply from an awareness standpoint: this place seems to attract a bit of an older crowd. Now, that's not a bad thing! The ambiance was subdued and you didn't feel like you had to raise your voice to have a conversation. Super light, crisp and hot. - perfectly sized (not huge) Parker House rolls with an herb cheese spread was light, fresh and garlicky - fried olives with a lemony ranch-style sauce. The salty olives were balanced by the lemon/herb/creamy dip. - "sexy" blue cheese salad comes with a slice of the smoothest, creamiets, most delicious blue (bleu?) cheese I have ever tasted. Figs, fig jam, and blue cheese dressing on top of icy cold, crisp iceberg. - crispy duck. The reason we came. The skin was so perfectly cooked I almost peeled it all off and ate it before even trying the meat. Served with plenty of jus, wild rice and apricots, and green and yellow squash. We should have stopped there, but they had strawberry cream pie on the menu and we shared a humongous slice. Overall absolutely delicious, fresh, and sustainable/local! The food was okay but didn't live up to the local hype. We started with a cocktail and our drinks came in a water glasses? Pretty sure we were charged for a double because who charges $15 for a vodka & tonic?! The Chicken Cutlets had way too much sauce (and capers) poured over it and it runs into the puréed (menu said mashed) potatoes, visually unappealing presentation. We tried the special of the day, crispy Brussels sprouts but they were so charred so it was more like burnt leaves. The waiter mentioned that the basil used for the remoulade came from just outside the restaurant. Which turned out to be two planters outside the front door that we noticed on our way out. That gave me the icks. The interior of the restaurant could use a refresh and a good dusting! Dust covered the picture frames, tops of the booths, what does the back of house look like?! The wall (opposite of the bar side) was filthy. Furniture is tired, fabric on columns and paint color says 1990's. Oh well, checked this off the list. read more

A decent experience service and environment-wise, but I was disappointed with the menu, and the food was just average, especially for the price. I ended up staying in the appetizers, ordering the Mushroom Soup and the Crispy Rolls of Shrimp "Spring Roll Style". The soup was decent, although I prefer one that has mushroom slices in it, and not just pureed mushroom, as this had. I also was hoping it would have some sherry in it, but I didn't taste any. It was fairly bland. The spring rolls (two, cut in half) were, again, okay. The wrapper was a bit undercooked -- yellow with no sign of brown -- and the shrimp tasted like it wasn't completely cooked through, either. (If I was describing it as pasta, I'd say it was al dente.) My husband had the Penne Pasta "Cedar River". He said it, too, was fairly bland. Just okay. My biggest disappointment was finding out that the Chicago Magazine's #1 Sirloin Burger came without a bun, and with a blue cheese topping and potato wedges. It was as if they prepared it exactly the way I wouldn't like it. If the burger is so wonderful, there should be options for us to customize it, so we can have it as we like, and not just as they want us to have it. My drink, their house Manhattan, was small, and was overpriced by several dollars, even by upscale lounge standards. Case in point, the next night I had two perfect Manhattans at another restaurant, that were $7 less each. read more

We recently had take out dinner from Prairie Grass Cafe in Northbrook. Crispy Breaded Halibut with apple slaw, potato wedges, cocktail sauce and tartar sauce Grilled Ora King Salmon with a Caesar salad, Adams Acres Romaine, tomato, avocado and cucumber. Both dishes were delightful, but my favorite was the Halibut, it was a beautiful, perfectly cooked, delicious piece of fish. We had our meal for take out, but they do have an outdoor patio for lunch and dinner as well as indoor dining. They also have prepared for winter. They have installed hospital grade air filtration systems inside. A great meal from Prairie Grass Cafe, would not hesitate to dine there again. read more

The Kentucky Mule tasted like mountain dew .. I advised my date not to waste money on this mediocre place again ... BTW the menu is very limited . We subscribed two bears special Thursday vegetarian event. As depicted in the photos, it is quite spectacular with different vegetables from different farmers. Well thought out and delicious. My wife and I have dined here many, many times over the years. We have had good to excellent meals and we have never left disappointed. Dining there last night, we both felt that food is getting better, maybe even great. We started with the deviled eggs appetizer which was excellent. My wife ordered the pork Milanese (outstanding) and the crispy Brussels sprouts (also outstanding). I ordered the fig and date salad, which was great, and the sirloin burger, maybe the best hamburger in all of Chicagoland. The service was perfect, very helpful.
