The ideal, simple place for casual breakfast. I came here with my toddler on a whim and I am so glad I did. The staff was friendly and sweet to my toddler. We shared the spinach and feta omelette and one pancake. The omelette came with toast and hash browns that were cooked so well and had a nice crispy layer on them. There seemed to be folks in there who were regulars and I really liked that feeling. Prices are super reasonable especially for the North Shore. Looking forward to going back soon! read more

My colleagues and I stopped by for lunch. It's not a "classic-styled" diner. It's a regular, classic diner, which is great to see and experience. The size is comfortable and we were greeted with a "sit anywhere you like". Even though it was lunch, I ordered off the breakfast menu... because of course you would. I chose the namesake Northfield skillet (scrambled eggs, medium rare skirt steak) and a pancake side. The skillet was mostly... fine. It could have been more seasoned, but the salt/pepper were on the table so maybe it was a "season-to-taste" kinda thing. Everything was fine... it was mostly fine. This place is such a welcoming neighborhood diner. My wait staff was friendly, full of very relevant information to include they filmed an episode of a Amazon Prime show here last year, and provided one of the best recommendations I have tasted in a long time. I ordered my usual ham and cheese omelette with American fries and English muffin. I had to ask what American fries were and it turned out to be sliced potatoes served like hash browns. The omelette was fine. Overcooked for me, but it tasted right. Nothing special. The American fries (still having a hard time with them being called fries) were cooked perfectly. Some crisp areas areas and still you can tell this was a full potato this morning. They must have a master on the mandolin. I was still hungry after it all and my wait staff said "people love our pancakes". Challenge accepted! I ordered the short stack. Often with pancakes one of two things are off... the pancake, or the syrup. This was perfect! Perfect! The amount of vanilla in the pancake balanced out the maple syrup perfectly! I felt like a kid. The price for all of this is extremely reasonable. I would have paid more. I will definitely return. read more

Good old fashion fifties restaurant food place. Good and tasty food. If by some remote, very small chance, there is something you are unhappy about, they will make it right. Never a problem as with some places. Great service. Clean. Nicest man at cash register/host. Customers have always been small town happy whenever I've been there. It is a nice place to go with a friend and feel comfortable that you are not rushed out and allowed to swallow your food before you have to pay!!!!There is a reason Northfield has outlived most of the others in the area. I've been coming to Northfield Restaurant since I was a kid. My father taught me how to shoot spitballs in one of the booths so my sister probably feels differently about this place. In the 40 years I've been coming nothing has changed besides the prices, which are still reasonable, especially for the area. There aren't too many old school diners left on the North Shore. We had a perfectly reasonable breakfast at this classic diner-style place this morning - a huge improvement over the crappy buffet at our hotel up in Northbrook. Omelettes with toast and home fries were as much or more than we could eat, and well-prepared. With coffee and tea it came to $31.60 for the two of us, a reasonable price. read more

At first glance this place looks like most other diners, with fewer parking options. A couple of things make it stand out from others though. First of all, the funny waitress, not in your face funny, just quick witted and delightful. Then, the fairly extensive menu; I actually didn't look through it as I had a good idea of what I wanted going in but our waitress told us of 3 different soups & some specials, also heard folks around us talking about a variety of options, and I read other reviews which mention many choices. Dropped by and it was such a charming place. Loved it. We brought our 14 month pandemic baby to this restaurant on a weekend, and everyone, from the staff to the diners, were all so sweet and welcoming. There was plenty to choose from on the menu, and like so many great diners, the food was good. And unlike so many places these days, the food was also affordably priced! When I ordered a full meal for the baby, the waitress was kind enough to point out their kids' meal choices in case I had missed it, which just goes to show the honesty and friendliness of the people that work there. We got the beef liver, the corned beef hash, and the reuben. The reuben could've had a little more meat, but was a good sandwich all in all - crispy bread, thinly sliced meat, good dose of dressing. The potato wedges were also crisped up to perfection. The beef liver was surprisingly good, fresh, sliced to the right thickness, not over done and not chewy, even the baby liked it, just like momma! The corned beef hash was okay, a little on the saltier side, but it had toast, hash browns, and eggs on the side, so once you eat everything together, it balanced out really nicely. Will definitely be back to this place time and time again, it feels like a neighborhood spot, lovely, warm, and delish. read more

And these people are not afraid to toast the devil out of an english muffin either. + Gorgeous, perfectly cooked steak fries like you hardly ever find anywhere anymore + Fried chicken pretty bland but very moist + This is a good spot for soup, too; the lentil is simple but good, and the navy bean is very good. I spent months chasing the clam chowder (an occasional Friday soup) and when I finally tried it, I was fairly well satisfied. + Chocolate malt milkshake in the B+/A- range + Rice pudding, pretty good though doused with cinnamon Milkshakes, burgers, fries, breakfast all day...God bless America. Look at the generous portions here. Once I ordered a daily special shrimp basket, $7.95. I got a bowl (not a cup) of soup, a pile of fries which had to come on their own separate plate, a baker's dozen fried shrimp, and a big scoop of cole slaw. Oh, and a basket of bread, which I believe is gratis for all customers. Eight bucks! If you go around 1pm you can probably get a booth, but before that a solo luncher is best served at the counter. Like most breakfast places of this generation, there are ample plates of food, endless coffee, and good breakfast favorites. My family had the ubiquitous combo plates with pancakes, eggs, and even a hamburger for my nephew. All the food was good and the coffee kept flowing. I have breakfast there at least 4 times per week. Good good, good service, good hours, great breakfast. Sue and Vicki are great and attentive. John always finds me a newspaper to read. It is out of my way in morning but worth it for me. Can't comment about any other meals because this is the breakfast location for me. Prices are reasonable/average for the geographic location.
