For vegan food, I have mixed feelings about this place. The bar has a happy hour with vegan tacos that are pretty good as well as miso soup. And you can order veggie sushi from the bar, which is always a plus. Four vegan stars for the bar. But, if you want vegan offerings in restaurant, don't bother -- they're not offered. Last night, they made an exception and served us the vegan taco, even though they're not on the menu. No sushi, though, because "there's only two sushi chefs on duty", which matched the amount of diners sitting at the sushi bar. Huge bummer. While everyone else in our party had huge entrees, we had appetizer sized tacos, edamame, and bread with olive oil. One vegan star for the restaurant. read more

All I can say I been very pleased either with the food and the service, all the waitress they been nice, sushi last night was very fresh and delicious, but what we like the most was today breakfast, we ask for chilaquiles and may goodness best chilaquiles ever not to mention the best attention. Come on guys, what's up with food service in the bar area? I came last year with my wife, enjoyed sushi and drinks ...bragging about this place to my friends, came back tonight -- cold shoulder indeed! According to the indifferent waitress, no sushi in the bar, we can all get up and go over there and order--- nice. Why should I have to work so hard to make things easier for you? If I'm trying to spend money here, can't you just walk the 15' over to the sushi bar?? What gives?? Get your customer service figured out. I won't be back. read more

One star is pretty low, I realize that and I don't believe I have ever given a restaurant this low of a review. I only do this because they come across as a higher end restaurant but they need improvement. Whitebark is located in the Westin Monache Resort. Resort has different meanings in Mono County, at the Westin you think things would be pretty good. They need to seriously work on this restaurant. The restaurant also has a sushi bar. There was no sushi chef on premise at dinner time (7:30) but we still ordered a roll as an appetizer. The roll reminded me of something I would get pre-packaged at a grocery store. It taste like it had been made hours before. When you're paying $15+ for a roll, you would think it would be made fresh. Our waitress was nice but not knowledgeable when it came to serving wine or waiting tables. I don't blame her, I blame the owners for not training their staff. When you ask someone if they are finished and they say yes, you should clear their plate. She didn't and the plate stayed there until someone who might be a floor manager came by and cleared it. My wife's portobello mushroom was lame. It was covered in risotto that was tasteless. The mushroom was thin, which I imagine is why they cover it in risotto. At least make the risotto taste good. Are these chefs(?) tasting the food they send out? My 1/2 Organic chicken was dry and tasteless. Again, does the cook(?) taste what they are making? When you go to a place in The Westin, order a $60 (low end) bottle of wine and $20+ dishes, you expect more. I would stick to the beer and pizza joints in Mammoth. It's hard to screw that up. If the Westin questions my review I'm at the hotel until Tuesday and will be glad to discuss my experience with them in detail. read more

"Wonderful food and pampering service experience" We ate here for my 52nd birthday. I was a little apprehensive being this was located inside a hotel ( Westin ) and after the disaster of a experience we had at Nevados the night before. Sooo glad we ate here !! The service was top notch. The sommelier recommended a cabernet (2008 Feather) that she said was her favorite and turns out it was one of the more reasonably priced bottles. The braised short ribs and my filet were awesome. They also have a sushi bar so we split a roll for an app and it was excellent as well. Great atmosphere, food and service. Yummmmmy! Ever been to a place where the menu is so tantalizing that you just can't pick one item? Well, Whitebark is one those places. The appetizers were so tasty that I never got around to the main course! Our waitress, Dana was so sweet. She made a couple of recommendations and they were fabulous. We started with the Tuscan salad (sounds simple, but so great on the palette) - field greens, fig vinaigrette, sun-dried tomatoes and fresh Parmesan. Jerk chicken sate, wrapped in a prosciutto, paired with chipotle grille pineapples. WoW - liked it so much we ordered a 2nd plate. The combination of the pineapple and the jerk chicken was perfection! Grilled scallops, marinated in lemon grass, topped with crab. Another amazing choice. Mac & Cheese. This was good, but I think my palette is used to the "non-fancy" kind. =) There are 3 of each kind of each appetizer and the fun thing is that you can order it by the trio, a tasting menu of sorts. Dessert was fun too. We ordered s'mores with homemade marsh mellows dipped in milk chocolate with extra warm chocolate dip. There is also a bowl of cotton candy. YES, nothing fancy, just a huge portion of cotton candy in a bowl. The main courses looked so tasty and everyone in the restaurant seemed to be having a great time and enjoying their meals. I'm definitely going back to have an actual meal, I think I'll be trying the Tajine. Can't forget ... Great wine list. Beautiful decor. Friendly wait staff. I think my only hang-up is that its so beautiful, it feels like a European ski resort. I guess I'm just used to the old Mammoth that I've grown to love for so many years. But if this is my only hang-up, well then, I'll need to get over it. =) read more

The prices are high but the food is great. The drinks at the bar are even better. Ask the bartender if there are any special drinks they are doing bc they may have something up their sleeve. This restaurant is inside the Westin. I don't expect much from hotel restaurants, and this was at the expected level. My husband and I went in for their sushi special which they have every Monday. We got miso soup, some salmon sushi and a Minaret roll. They were all good enough but nothing special. The sushi were smaller than we're used to, and the roll was dryer. I'm used to rolls having so much sauce that I don't need to dip them into soy sauce, but this one needed to be dipped. For dessert, we had the creme brulee, which looked very good and had a nice top layer of the torched sugar, but the main custard part had the wrong texture, more like a flan I think. BTW, when we arrived, the hostess didn't ask us if we were there for the special and sat us at a table. We had to ask our waiter for sushi menus, and he grabbed them from the sushi bar which we were right next to, removing the sushi special inserts. I asked about the special, and we had to be moved to a different table to get the special. I don't really understand what was up with all that. It's very possible their non-Japanese dishes are much better, but I doubt I'll be coming back since there are so many great restaurants in the area. read more

So while the in-room dining program in Westin leaves a lot to be desired, Whitebark is pretty on point. The variety of the drinks and food option is superb, and the ambience is "ski sexy." Props to bartender Cornell. Mixes a mean drink, helped us out the next day when we had altitude sickness, and spent his down time polishing glass. Just a great guy... A worker. Guys... we got served a rancid steak. It smelled and tasted terrible (like really really bad). Although this was a super convenient dinner option as we are hotel guests, I wasn't over the moon. The food tasted good but it was like warm at best. I like my food fresh & hot. My husband ordered the heirloom tomato salad only to receive a stack of regular, completely not ripe tomatoes. Very disappointing. We split filet for dinner - the flavor was great. But again, like warm at best. It took over half an hour after starters for our server to come back & let us know dinner was coming. After that, she almost abandoned us completely. Hopefully it was just an off night overall. read more

I am sorry to give them a poor review. We have been enjoying this restaurant for some years...and have always looked forward to it. This year the food was, at best mediocre. They closed the sushi bar and have a more limited menu and very repetitive happy hour offerings. I understand that the restaurant is under new management. That is a shame. The wait staff were, as always, pleasant and good at their jobs. read more

If you're looking for well-made cocktails then this is def not the place for you. I went here on an off-time, 2-3pm when most people were still on the slopes. Maybe that was the problem. In any case, the cocktail menu seemed to offer a nice selection of drinks. Unfortunately, the bartender, or maybe it's just the way of the bar, didn't correctly make the drinks my friends ordered. My boyfriend had ordered a Sazerac which should only consist of an absinthe rinse but here it was made with 2/3 oz of absinthe which ended up just dominating the cocktail. You couldn't taste or even smell the rye it was mixed with. Also the drink was served on the rocks instead of neat. The cocktail menu also offers a nice selection of whiskey which was priced for either served on the rocks or as a Manhattan. But for the Manhattan we had, it tasted as if the bartender didn't use any sweet Vermouth at all. The cocktail prices were priced decent, $8-$9 and happy hour is half off beer and wine. But I would never come back here. read more

This review is for the SUSHI bar at Whitebark... We have been to Mammoth many times and have struggled to find a restaurant we want to return to. Whitebark's sushi bar was a pleasant surprise. We ordered the 5 course meal for $45. Worth. Every. Penny. Our two sushi chefs were friendly, and experienced and delivered excellent dishes. The food we received was a combo of traditional and fusion sushi, all tailored to our preferences. The decor is beautiful with a nature-modern touch. This would be a great place for a date. Truly, the only restaurant in Mammoth I will make sure to return to in the future. If I was to complain about anything, it would be the cost - but even with the high cost, it wasn't abnormally high for good sushi. It's worth it! read more

I stopped by earlier today apres-ski for happy hour. Happy hour is from 2-5pm. The draft beers were only $2.50 for a 12 ounce so that was awesome! They had Newcastle, Stella, Hoegaarden, and Mammoth pale ale. They also had a sauvignon blanc for happy hour as well. It was pretty crowded and I was there with my 5 year old son and some friends. We tried to get a table in the lounge but there weren't any available so we just sat at the bar for awhile. Since my son couldn't sit at the bar, my wife stood around with him waiting for a lounge table. The hostess told us that the restaurant was fully booked so she couldn't seat us there so we should just wait around for a table to open up. She said that it looked like someone would leave pretty soon and that we should just hang out until one becomes available. Once a table opened up we sat there. The busboys came by to clean it up but 30 minutes later, we were still sitting there with no menus, no waitress, no place settings, etc. It was hard tracking anyone down but eventually we tracked one guy down who got us some menus. Our server was still nowhere to be found so we finally asked someone who our server is. The guy went to the hostess and asked if she seated us there and she said no. So basically the guy thought we just stole the table or whatever. Anyway, eventually the guy went back and got a waitress. She said that she thought another girl was supposed to take care of us and she was apologetic and took our order. In the end, we finally got our food and it was ok. We had to ask for a sushi menu (the regular dinner menu didn't have sushi on it). We had to ask for a drink menu, etc. Overall, the service was just lacking. The place does get busy with the apres-ski crowd and it's a nice place but it took us about 1.5 hours to drink 1 beer and eat some finger food. read more

I got in to town after 6 and so by the time I was ready to eat it was getting late so I decided to eat at the bar. Great service. Lovely ambiance. Good flavors. Limited menu. Could work on food presentation.

Ever since Sushi Rei closed, we've been hitting Whitebark. Tonight I had the poke salad. Excellent fish selection with some mango chunks thrown in. Really good. Went here a few days ago for the sushi, since I thought it would be better than gambling on Shogun (the only other sushi place in town that I know of). GREAT idea. For one, I can say that the sushi menu is quite a bit cheaper than the rest of the menu if you like rolls; each roll runs around $13-18. In my opinion, the best roll they have, and probably one of the best I've ever had, was called the sweet bliss. Unagi, cream cheese, pickled carrot, cucumber, rice of course, and strawberry of all things. It was great. Some of the other reviews talked about the service being a bit sketchy, but I must have been there at a good time cause our waiter was very nice. The biggest thing I can say against it is that even though it has a "sushi bar," it's nothing like most traditional sushi bars: you don't talk to the chefs, it's hard to watch them prepare the food because the bar they prepare it behind is a bit high, etc. That said, they did put a lot into the ambiance, and it was a comfortable and quiet place, if not a bit stuffy. read more

It's a pretty atmosphere, but the food was less than adequate. Tuna looked great on the plate, but unfortunately that's the most positive comment I can make. Calamari was served with ketchup. Our waitress went MIA, so we flagged down a waiter. When we advised him about the ketchup, we got ketchup a second time. We told him it was still ketchup, but he said NO the chef said it's cocktail sauce. We said no, it's just ketchup. The third time (and by now the calamari was cold) they clearly threw in some horseradish (a little lemon & worcestershire would have helped), but still not good. That's when our waitress turned back up again. We called it a night. No apology, just an excuse about a mix-up in the kitchen and a bill that added to the bad taste in my mouth. We won't be back! read more

shocked experience (ribs for 65$), not good tasty and don't allow to eat with dog even in lobby - only in the room (plus 30% for service).

We came here for breakfast, great selections and service was excellent!

Your new menu sucks. Local. Used to love coming here for the ambiance with a mix of cuisine for all prices. Now no lounge menu, no sushi and it's hard to get a meat entree without spending $50. Oh and how about you update your website with the new shitty menu. RIP skirt steak and string fries. Nice knowing you Whitebark! I'd rather eat anywhere else! read more

We are here for dinner on a Friday night with another family with small kids. We were seated promptly which was nice, and our server saw his quickly to take drink orders for us along with food orders for kids. While I appreciate that the kids menu features only healthy selections (e.g. No French fries), my kids still wanted something of that ilk as they had been good all day. My wife and I ordered the Brussels sprouts and edamame for apps. The former was ok and the edamame was cold. For dinner, we both had the papardelle which was merely average. The ice cream cookie dessert was presented nicely but again average. With the prices and the cool decor (love the rocks hanging on wires!) we were expecting to be delighted, but instead we found Whitebark to be merely a solid food choice. We wanted vegetarian fare plus a bit of sushi for protein, and we found a lot of choices on the menu. The three of us split: * hamachi and tuna nigiri (tasty, though not particularly remarkable by LA standards) * cross-cut French fries (quite decent) * brussels sprouts (okay but undercooked and underflavored, IMHO, and I am a world authority on making brussels sprouts mouth-wateringly delicious) * mac and cheese with truffle oil (bland, gooey and tasteless - we sent it back. For the record using orechiette for mac'n'cheese is a bad idea) * bread with olive oil and vinegar and roasted garlic (yum) I think we may have had more food, but we also had a bunch of hot sake, so the details are a bit fuzzy. The July 4 fireworks happened right outside our window (roman candles! Cool!) which was very exciting. The restaurant had the good sense to dim the lights so everyone could ooh and ahh, so more points for attentive service. In all, an okay choice with a couple of veg options (it looks like the menu changes frequently), but don't expect too too much (except when it comes to the size of the bill). read more

Whitebark is a perfect spot during their happy hour at the bar and to grab a quick bite if you're staying at the Westin. We dropped in on the late side of a Friday night as well as after our typical Roberto's run after our day on the mountain. There's nothing blow-your-mind about the menu, and we only ordered from the bar menu, so i can't judge the entrees. The wine by-the-glass selection is decent and the small plates get the job done. The layout of the bar is not perfect as only a section of the seats can see the TVs above, so you have to be in a perfect spot in order to see the game. The decor is nice.. rustic in a modern sort of way. The service was good although they were definitely getting busy. I would come back here when staying at the hotel, but may not make a special trip in if staying elsewhere. read more

The new menu is nice. It was about time for a change. The grilled Haloumi was great. It's a salty cheese so make sure you have someone to share with. The rock shrimp and crab polenta was delicious. The smoked tasso was a bit strong if you don't like a lot of smoky flavor, but I couldn't stop eating it. The sushi chef is pretty amazing for a white guy! He knows his fish and hooked us up with all kinds of little tastes and bites of off menu things. Sit at the sushi bar and just let him take care of you. You won't be disappointed. And don't forget that there is a small glass tip jar there for him! Two things I wish they would change- 1. There should be a better pasta dish and some kind of chicken. Not everyone wants to eat a big hunk of meat everytime they eat out. 2. Change the kids menu. My kids are too old to be eating chicken tenders and buttered pasta, but they aren't going to wolf down a $38 steak either. My kids would like to come to dinner with us and actually eat. The dessert menu is hit and miss. We've not ordered much off of it as of late. read more

The drinks were "ok" My friend had to send hers back a couple comes, one time too sweet, one time not sweet enough. And the service was pretty slow. We had all ordered pretty much at the same time... but things didn't come out that way.. the salad came first, then 10 min later the shoe string fries, then 10 min after that the 2 pieces of sashimi.
