After reading the Yelp reviews my husband and I were hesitant to come here, but since we were staying at the Westin, and most of the other nearby restaurants were closed, we decided to take a chance... We ordered 3 small plates to share: mac n cheese, prawns, and carne asada fries. The first item that came out was brussel sprouts (which we never ordered) and we told the waiter we'd take it instead of the prawns (which had not come out yet). A few minutes later we were served the mac n cheese and carne asada fries. The mac n chesse was good, but the brussels and carne asada fries were extremely salty. As we finished up what we could handle of the 3 plates, next thing you know, the prawns show up. The prawns (which we didn't even want anymore) were way too salty as well. During our meal, the table next to us also complained to management about the portions being "child sized". For the venue we were at and the pricing we paid, Whitebark was pretty disappointing. read more

We usually go for happy hour-- which I think've been decontenting lately. No more hanger steak or a few other dishes. That said it's still pretty good. Shishito peppers consistently have some kick, the cheese and nut plate is pretty generous, and the burger is pretty good. I'd skip dessert as it's more ordinary than anything else. Keep in mind it does get crowded and it's the only luxury hotel in the whole town, so it may be crowded much longer than you think. Plus the bar has well-positioned TV's so crowds may linger for the game... read more

I really loved the Westin hotel, but its restaurant was one of the most bipolar I've ever dined in. Some good items, some bad. Some great service, some dreadful. Just to be sure, we went a couple of times over three days. On the first, we ordered the duck--the breast was perfect, but the leg and thigh were done as a confit and really dry. The sides were very good, although we also ordered Brussels sprouts and they were very much undercooked. Good/bad, good/bad, good/bad... Our meals were slow in arriving, and others were served who were seated after us. We tried to flag down the busy waitress, who made five passes by our table without looking up (BAD). When we stopped her, she apologized and got the manager right away, who apologized for the delays (GOOD). They comped the Brussels sprouts and our dessert. However, and two of the three sorbets were a bit lacking (one was icy, and the chocolate/chili was badly over-spiced). The times time we went on a slow night. The sushi was still slow, and the rice was hard and unseasoned. So I would say that the sushi bar is the weak spot here, but it could also be the coordination between the sushi bar and the kitchen. A bright spot: breakfast was good, and they couldn't refill my Starbucks coffee fast enough. read more

It's "one of THOSE places" that serves tiny food items on huge plates. I'm not sure if that's supposed to make it more exotic...? I would consider it a "nice restaurant". Usually when my dinner bill is $55, it kinda has to fit in that category. That being said, I dunno if it was really worth that. The food items, although exotic, really didn't seem that special to me. If I'm in the mood for a "nice restaurant", there's a couple other places in town that I'd prefer. I got the "Sump'n Good" cocktail, which was relatively good, but had tons of ice in the cup. I was even sucking up ice with my straw, which was unusual. The Dorado was a little bit rubber and didn't have much flavor. I've never had it before so I can't really compare, but I wasn't impressed. The red quinoa that came with it wasn't bad, and had fruit mixed in it. The veggies served with it consisted of 2 small (bite-sized) squash cut in half and a sprinkle of arugula or something. I'm not a huge eater, but naturally, I wasn't full. I then got the Creme Brulee which sounded very appetizing. It apparently was neither Creme nor Brulee, as it's made from something dairy-free (didn't taste as good), and it was barely burnt on top. Service was ok, no complaints. We had reservations booked at Whitebark a month in advance (Dec 3) for NYE. Booking that far in advance we had our pick of restaurants and appreciated that Whitebark was serving their regular menu, unlike other restaurants in town which had a fixed price menu for NYE. An hour before our reservation, the hostess called to tell us that they were now only serving a six course, fixed price menu at $150 per person (tax and gratuity not included). The menu included escargot, duck confit, and other items that did not suit the tastes/dietary needs of our party. In addition, we hadn't planned to eat such a large meal so would not get our money's worth. We cancelled the reservation and were able to find an alternate dinner spot, but were really disgusted that Whitebark notified us at the last minute. Terrible management decision to not notify guests as soon as they set a fixed menu. I've dined here numerous times in the past and will not return. It wasn't about the money, as we could afford the meal, but didn't appreciate the last minute notification. read more

The "in house" restaurant at the Westin Monache is probably what you'd expect. Many healthy menu choices (Westin focuses on being healthy) , something a little different (Malibu Benedict, a sushi bar) and excellent, friendly service, and slightly more expensive than other places nearby. As a Starwood Platinum it is a "no brainer" to take the breakfast as your perk. The continental breakfast is very nice, but even better, they give you $30 credit in lieu of choosing the continental, so you can go for the Grand Marnier French Toast! We've found it rarely crowded at breakfast, but for dinner during busy ski times it's best to make a reservation, they use Open Table. read more

Everything was great- food was delicious, great view and the service was amazing. We went for my birthday. I had seen chocolate mouse on a menu that apparently was from a few years ago. Unfortunately it was not on the current menu, only a mouse cake. Our waiter Ronell surprised us with a mouse desert that he asked the chef to make! Now thats some spectacular service! When my boyfriend called to make a reservation, he also asked where to park, and if he could park in the garage. At first the employee said yes, then changed his mind and said no you can't you have to find a spot on the street. He obviously didn't know what he was talking about, we used the call box from the garage and told them we had reservations, and the garage was instantly opened for us. When we got there the same host that had taken our reservation seemed very confused in telling us that if we want sushi you can only eat it at the sushi bar and asked us twice if that'd be ok with us and if that's what we want to do. Idk it just seemed weird and like he really didn't know what he was doing. The miso soup was great and I like that it had mushrooms in it. All of the sushi we got was great and the sushi chef was extremely friendly with a great smile and very attentive. The waiter seemed cool at first but stumbled later. We had asked him for 2 shots of tequila, one chilled with no salt, and the other not chilled with salt on one side of the glass. (not super complicated right?) Well he totally forgot about our shots, and then I reminded him, he brought them back later and then acknowledges that the bartender didn't make it right. They were both non-chilled shots and the salt was not on one side like we asked. This might seem picky but the waiter even said the bartender made it incorrectly, and really that was a simple thing to fix. When the waiter took the check, he didn't ask if we wanted change and I guess just assumed we didn't because he never came back. We had to flag him down and ask for the change and he was all surprised but apologetic. We decided to tip less because of the assumption we wouldn't want change. So besides the host being clueless and the waiter being assumptive and even acknowledging he got our drink order wrong, we still had a wonderful time and the food was absolutely great. I am so sorry and disappointed that the restaurants no longer meet the standards and criteria they claim to be. Ate here seven times during our stay at Westin(5 breakfast two dinners) 5 stars for food 4 stars for service on average. Food was consistently delIcious with healthy and delicious and unique options. Service was slower than you would expect- usually you would have to wait quite some time to get your order put in. It seemed that they're probably understaffed. I think they could make better use of their bussers as they rarely came around to check in on refills/needs etc. We had a particularly wonderful dinner when we were served by Ashley , who was incredibly friendly and above and beyond kind to our baby). Meh. First off we came a few minutes early and the manager/hostess would not seat us until our exact reservation time. So we waited out front although they were slow and had plenty of seating. The food: very bland. We had the bass and the mushroom ravioli. I NEVER salt my food, but I had to because it was flavorless. Lastly, we put in my sons order with our drinks order to get his out first. However, it came out with our food and was cold, having sat out for some time. For the price, you are not getting comparable food. Service was fine. Nothing special, but no issues there. Plenty of other great restaurants in town that are less pricey. read more

We had a horrible experience at Whitebark. When we arrived on time for our evening reservation, the hostess mentioned that the kitchen was backed up by 2-1/2 hours and they couldn't serve us. Evidently, they were overwhelmed with room service orders in the hotel and did not have the time to serve the restaurant guests in a timely manner. It's strange that they haven't figured out how to provide both room service meals and also feed their restaurant guests. i doubt that there were more room service orders than usual since it was a Sunday night and the weather was cold but definitely not snowing at the time. Maybe, they are short staffed? Who knows. We would have loved to receive a phone call to notify us that they could not accommodate us or even receive more of an apology and explanation from the hostess. It really seemed like they could care less about their customers. read more

We checked in to the hotel on a Tuesday late afternoon and famished from the drive, opted for the easy approach and decided to check out the hotel restaurant. Upon arrival we were greeted with a very booth "do you have a reservation"? To his credit the place did seem busy, but after asking how long we would need to www it, he informed me that they were fully committed and they could possibly squeeze us in at 10pm. We opted instead to sit in the bar (with the kids mind you) at a VERY tiny table. The food was decent and the bar staff very accommodating, but we looked around 30 min later and realized the ENTIRE PLACE HAD CLEARED OUT. Seriously.... he coUld have just told us to come back in an hour and that would have been fine. Not impressed. read more

i like the dining room and have been many times but not recently. They used to do a great happy hour and you would regularly see the bar crowded with friends and long time residents enjoying food and drinks and I imagine it was good for the restaurant and the staff but then that HH disappeared and with it so did the friends and residents. I recently went and i know my gluten free diet isn't anyone else's problem but there were about 2 things I could have so I got the bison flatbread which was fine and a house salad. It was a large pile of undressed greens w chunks of broccoflower (I don't know the real name but it's green cauliflower) and tomatoes soaked in straight vinegar. I choked on the vinegar about 20 times and finally had to stop eating it because there was no seasoning other than vinegar. There was no oil in the 'dressing' either. The dressing was a ramekin of tomatoes soaking in vinegar. To the kitchen: you cannot have straight acid with no fat, salt or sugar. My mouth felt shredded and I couldn't eat anymore. When you charge $16 for a glass of mediocre sparkling wine and about the same for a 'salad' you need an actual dressing that doesn't taste and feel terrible. Even just oil and salt would have been better. Premium prices and meh food make for a very unsatisfying experience. i was really hoping for at least pretty good. We were having the most wonderful time on our girls weekend after being trapped in by COVId FOR A YEAR. JR welcomed us, and made us some delicious martinis. We were so happy and so cheerful until DOUCHEBAG NAPOLEON MANAGER walks over and asks us to "keep it down" even though we were one of 3 groups in the ENTIRE PLACE. The other groups looked over and laughed at his ridiculousness. The place is empty and he was a dick. It was unprofessional and we are appalled at our treatment. Managers are you reading this?! A surprise hit at the Westin hotel. We were there for happy hour and the temperature and the freshness of the food was perfect not to mention they were selling at an unbelievably cheap price. We had calamari, wings and ceviche. The server lady was extremely quick and attentive. She was better than two regular servers at other restaurants. The menu is ok. Food timing is ok. The staff is a gamble. After 3 nights and multiple visits to the Whitebark our luck was 50/50 on good staff. The slow ones were very slow. The fast and efficient ones were great. The salads were a bigger hit with our group and going for the big breakfast proved the right thing if you were going to be on the mountain all day. read more

This place was so much better than the Yelp rating suggests. We came on a Weds night when they have "Happy Hour Menu" from 6 to 10 pm. Our Flank Steaks were cooked perfectly (medium rare) with a wonderful glaze. The potatoes were very tasty (Only $15 during Happy Hour) The Calamari ($10 happy hour price) was enough for 2-3 persons. It was better than any place in San Francisco on Fisherman's Wharf. The two dipping sauces were excellent. I got to especially hand it to their pastry assortments: the apple turnover over, raspberry danish, and chocolate pastry were awesome. Nice crispy and fresh tasting pastries. The berry parfait was nice too. It had granola bits with strawberries, blueberries, and a bit of yogurt...not really my fancy, but if I was a health nut this would be good for me all day. The Starbucks coffee and OJ...phenomenal...much needed in the morning. As for the service...well, the dude the second day I went there was pretty good and attentive, but the girls are a bit scattered. Mammoth Lakes - the Boulevard of Broken Dreams. The Vail of the West that never was. The victim of time-share and condo-mania built too quickly and too late. Pushed upmarket but not far enough to attract the true big spenders. An empty lot where the skeleton of a sign that once eagerly proclaimed itself to be the future location of a Ritz Carlton Residence Club is succumbing to wood rot. A half-finished "downtown village" of "high-rise" hotel buildings that are nail-for-nail clones of "moderate" condo-tels from Whistler-Blackcomb, and rising above it all, like a chateau among the pines, the Westin Monache - the only truly hotel-like property in town in service and aesthetic. It's montane-moderne motif is omnipresent, and nowhere is it more apparent than in Whitebark. Whitebark, listed as one of the "Village Restaurants" is not part of the village proper - to reach it one must cross Canyon Boulevard at the tram stop, beneath the Village Gondola, and climb the mountain of steps leading to the Westin's lobby. Once inside, the faux-crafstman aesthetic of the Village gives way to something quite different, and the restaurant itself - with its polished steel accents, 'floating' river stone ceiling, and glossy granite walls, broken with floating fireplaces - seems curiously appropriate for Mammoth, yet entirely different from what you'd expect. The local inspiration is clear, but the manner in which it is used is decidedly unique. It only works here, in this one place. It is sophisticated in a way Mammoth Mountain ski area's attempts at copying trendy LA aesthetics cannot be precisely because it is meant to BE Mammoth revisited - not a copy of something else. It is without a doubt the most striking dining room interior in the Eastern Sierra. And I say this as an unabashed critic of modern architecture. The menu is also in keeping with its setting - local yet unconventional. Duck, venison, steak and chops, all spun with fusions of asian and Mediterranean flavors. The Caesar Salad, at $9, is of the delightful wedge variety - two large very crisp and cold romaine wedges with fresh parmesean, crostini, and a dressing with the spicy, aromatic, seafood-like aroma that only comes from a truly fresh anchovy-rich dressing. The wild Lassen Rainbow Trout ($28), on a bed of pearl pasta and vegetables, with its lemon-dill reduction, was a refreshing meshing of textures - a nutty pasta, a slight pickled sensation from the reduction, and a mild carrot flavor. Perfection. Duck confit pasta, elk chops - each dish was an exceedingly generous portion, with an unexpected yet fitting twist. The Asian influences are light and accentory in nature, and the presentation as masterful as any fine restaurant in the Southland, yet still different - decidedly different, decidedly Mammoth. The service is attentive, yet on busy nights gets swamped and the meal becomes quite leisurely. However, each staff member is trained to anticipate needs before they arise and to treat every guest like a regular whether you are staying at the Westin or not. This is something other Mammoth restaurants desperately need to learn. The bar area possesses its own menu of sophisticated pub fare (the gourmet sliders, with different meats and sauces, are an ever changing delight) and recently a full sushi bar was added, and my friends claim it's the best sushi in Mammoth (which isn't hard... given Sushi Rei is pretty lackluster). Will definitely have to return. The wine list is extensive, and the drinks quite stiff and masterful. This is the only bar in Mammoth that makes a proper Old Fashioned. Perhaps Mammoth will someday reach its full potential and abandon its LA-in-the-mountains aesthetic and attitude and achieve true sophistication. But until that day comes Whitebark offers a privileged glimpse of that possibility. It is amazing. The best splurge on the Eastside. read more

I just went to this restaurant for a wedding reception. The food was not only delicious but the staff did a great job of bringing everyone's food out at the same time (still warm) and it all seemed to be cooked consistently. This alone is one of the most important things for a large group dinner. We were also able to sit in their private room which offered a wonderful view. We had a 4 course dinner starting with a seared ahi tuna which was seared perfectly. Then there was a pesto gnocchi which was also cooked really well. The pasta was soft and pillowy and the sauce was rich, flavorful, and came with pine nuts; giving the dish a great contrasting texture. The next dish was truffle quail, which unfortunately was my least favorite. It was good but didn't have a strong truffle flavor and was hard to eat. The last dish was pork with roasted brussel sprouts and potatoes. The meat was tender and it was accompanied by a delicious cinnamon, fruit puree which reminded me very much of Thanksgiving. This is the dining room at the Westin Monache Resort in Mammoth Lakes. We had breakfast there. The service was outstanding! Our waitress couldn't do enough for us. The restaurant was filled with people, but all orders came quickly. The food was tasty. I ordered the All American Breakfast: two eggs with choice of bacon, sausage or ham, rosemary potatoes and toast. The bacon was done perfectly as I like it: crispy but not burned. My daughter ordered Eggs Benedict and said they were good. She noted a hint of spice to the sauce that is different than Hollandaise sauce is generally. The waitress said they add paprika to it. Prior to getting our entrees, we were each served a small plate of fresh fruit with blueberries, melon and strawberries.. We assumed this was just something that went with the breakfasts until we got our bill. There was a $1.00 charge for each. We had not ordered that, so were a little surprised. My granddaughter wanted strawberries when she saw ours, so our waitress brought her a bowl of them. The location on the ground floor is elegant. There are majestic pines out every window and one senses the smells of the mountains and trees. The restaurant is lovely. This was a good choice for breakfast. read more

Unfortunately very disappointing. Happy hour seemed like a great idea, and pricing on beers, well drinks and snacks is much better, but only the beers and french fries turned out nicely. The well drinks (how do you mess up a margarita?), chicken wings (my point again) and sushi were mediocre at best. The service was honestly the icing on the cake. The waitress didn't seem to know what she was talking about, and didn't even provide a pen for signing the check. If you're staying at the Westin and want to kick it at the bar with a cheap beer and fries during happy hour, you'll probably be okay. Pretty brutal. The usual suspects down in the village had a 2 hr wait so we stayed at our hotel to eat. First, they made our family sit in the bar even though the place was half empty. Half chicken was wildly undercooked and had to be sent back. Lobster bisque had not one shred of lobster. They serve sushi too?!? I love this place. I love it mainly for the top notch service and the way the service staff keep the drinks flowing (and with no judgement). I had two fantastic meals here. The restaurant is located inside the Westin hotel by the Village. I was greeted with a cheerful smile and seated quickly, both times. The first time I ate here I had the grilled peach salad that was wonderful. The dinner I had was the ribeye (of course) and it was cooked quite well. For vegan food, I have mixed feelings about this place. The bar has a happy hour with vegan tacos that are pretty good as well as miso soup. And you can order veggie sushi from the bar, which is always a plus. Four vegan stars for the bar. But, if you want vegan offerings in restaurant, don't bother -- they're not offered. Last night, they made an exception and served us the vegan taco, even though they're not on the menu. No sushi, though, because "there's only two sushi chefs on duty", which matched the amount of diners sitting at the sushi bar. Huge bummer. While everyone else in our party had huge entrees, we had appetizer sized tacos, edamame, and bread with olive oil. One vegan star for the restaurant. read more
