Hummingbird in Norfolk is my usual to go to bakery in Norfolk, especially for macarons, so I lowkey feel bad for cheating on them; but I've been following Whisk on instagram for almost 2 years and I saw they had giant macaron ice cream sandiwiches made with homemade coriander raspberry ice cream as their special for the day, so I had to stop in during my recent brief visit to Richmond. We came here because I wanna get a variety of French dessert for my family. I came here on a Sunday afternoon and it was nice and not too packed. I ordered macaron, lemon eclair, salted caramel blondie, creme brûlée bar, and regular eclair. Everything is Soooo good, everyone especially LOVES the creme brûlée bar. My fiancé, sister and I went to whisk to check out their baked goods and get out of the heat. It is conveniently located across the street from on street public parking. As soon as you walk in, the smells begin to make your mouth water. We ended up getting a couple macaroons, creme brûlée, lemon eclairs, and a salted caramel blondie bar. Love their macarons!! SOOO big and perfectly baked. They're only $3.25 which is the same price as a regular sized macaron! I got the honey nut cereal and got to try the chocolate cherry ice cream macaron. Highly recommend both. The matcha latte was also good. Cute interior, simple packaging. They sell many pastries, croissants, sandwiches, cookies, cakes, macarons and they do serve coffee too! I came here for their macarons. Macarons are $3.25 each, $18 for a box of 6, and $35 for 12. The macarons are large and as big as the size of my palm! I prefer the smaller ones, but I guess they want to be a little distinctive from other bakery. The shells are crisp, some were unfortunately very crumbly. The inside fillings flavors was wonderful and had the right amount of sweetness and some are decorated. Whisk offer many seasonal and limited edition flavors and are gluten free. I've been wanting to try this place for myself since I've had many of my customers gift us pastries from here and I finally got the chance! A friend and I went about 10:30 AM on a Sunday and there was a short line out the door. The longer we were there, the busier they got but not to fret; the line goes quick! If you have not had the chance to try their butter croissants, do it! You won't regret it! The staff here is so friendly! Aside from the yummy pastries, the staff is so friendly and helpful! Be sure to snag a frequent flyer card, and note their list of flavor shots by the register manned by friendly staff members. Everything was cute and generously portioned, but so far execution has been just okay. Latte was fine. Chocolate almond croissant was dense and not especially flaky. The American-sized macarons have great flavor, though the texture's not very airy; also had similar reaction to the fist-sized choux. Gougères were a little flatter than average, and less flavorful than the other items we tried. The ice cream sandwich was tasty but just a touch richer than I'd like for that portioning, easily shared with multiple people. This was a decent option, and would be fine if you're already in the area, but I would not go far out of my way to try this place... again. We made a trip out to this place after I had just finished a 5 hour long grad school interview and I gotta say I didn't have anything worth writing home about. I had the Parisian sandwich which was pretty good, and the baguette was delicious. The oatmeal cookie sandwich was very sweet, which I personally like, but my oatmeal cookie loving bf thought it was too much. The lavender-honey-whatever-the-eff french macaron was... hard to love. Attention Instagram lovers, I think I just found our dream cafe !! It has everything us foodies look for in a photo-worthy place: good lighting, exposed brick, and pretty pastries all tucked away in a little corner coffee shop. I came here in hopes to try one of their super cute French macaron ice cream sandwiches I've been drooling over on Instagram, there was even a sign outside saying they had them, but to my disappointment, I was served an oatmeal cookie ice cream sandwich instead. I LOVE WHISK. That is all..... haha I could end my review right there, but I'll be nice and give you some deets on why I love Whisk so much. First, THE PASTRIES. Hello, who doesn't love a nice fresh baked pastry in the morning? or at anytime for that matter? I don't think I've ever had a bad pastry from this place, and I live fairly close, so I've had quite a bit. My favorite is their filled croissants. The croissants have a perfect flaky buttery texture that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, everything you could ever want in a dough package. Of course their macaroons and other cookies are good as well. I'm not a huge fan of the coffee, and I'm not sure off the top of my head where they get it from, but it's 'meh' at best. Its nothing I ever really crave or want. If I could offer one suggestion, it would be to open earlier. I have to be at work around 7 and I know that if i could go in there at 6:30 and get breakfast, I would. But honestly maybe it's a good thing for my wallet and waistline that I can't stop there every morning on my way to work. read more

It's a small cafe with loads of lighting at the front, but not a huge load of seating a bit the bakery and food made up for it. There's some small table/2-person seatings along the hallway but it's fairly dark for my liking. At the front, there's a couple of tables and a high bench seating along the windows. We were in here for literally 10 seconds before the lady at the cash register was rude to us for not immediately knowing what we want, and kept saying "other people are waiting in line." I said "we waited in line too" before we walked out. Literally the first time that I did this before. I've been to both locations. At every visit, there has been disappointment, and the customer service has been consistently poor. Staples Mill location was worse. They never have the items in the case that I wanted, staff were rude. One time I placed an order online, received a confirmation, went to pick up at Staples Mill, they did not have the order and could not have cared less. I placed another order online again (my friend from out of town loves the oatmeal cookies), my credit card was charged, I arrived at Staples Mill to find it had closed. I have been unable to find any phone number to call to get my money back. Not only are they rude when present, they are also unethical in their business practices. Before coming to Richmond, I saved a list of places to visit. I was most excited to visit Whisk, and they did NOT disappoint! Whisk is the cutest little bakery with stained glass windows and the perfect place to study. I visited several times during my trip and was able to try a few different things. They truly have something for everyone - their version of homemade Oreos, various croissants, tarts, cinnamon buns on Fridays, sandwiches, and of course, their famous macarons, including ice cream sandwich macarons. First, I tried the coffee cake muffin. Normally coffee cake is sort of dry and bland but not theirs! It's moist and buttery with the perfect amount of cinnamon AND with chocolate added in. It's more of a coffee cake meets chocolate chip muffin type of situation. Totally delicious! During my first visit, they had happy hour, which is a super fun concept for a bakery. They offer reduced pricing on wines from 5-7. This seems like a perfect first date or just a great way to catch up either friends! Try the rosé. Oh my next visit, my life was changed by their salted dark chocolate macaron. I've had macarons from around the world and always found them a little underwhelming (blasphemy, I know) until Whisk! The macarons are huge, so they have the perfect crunchy exterior and soft, cookie-like interior. The cookie had a rich chocolate flavor that was perfectly accompanied by the salted buttercream filling. I seriously could not stop eating it! I was devastated I was not able to stop back by before leaving, so I guess I need to visit Richmond again soon!m Whisk is a must try for visitors and Richmond natives. They have friendly staff ready to offer suggestions, a variety of coffee drinks, wine, many pastries and baked goods, and even sandwiches for lunch. They do have free WiFi, so it was an ideal work space with beautiful lighting, a quiet and calm interior, delicious snacks, and the fabulous smells of working in a bakery. I've pass this place often and have had it bookmarked for a while, so when my daughter said she wanted to treat me for Mother's Day, I decided to take the opportunity to visit. Found street parking fairly easy about a block away, but I can see how it could be difficult in heavier traffic. Inside it's small but not an unexpected size for the coffee shops located in the area. It was pretty busy, but I'm not sure if it's always like that or if the holiday made it busier. In skimming reviews someone had mentioned that employees should figure out a better way to direct the line so as not to inconvenience dining patrons and I agree. There were a decent amount of items in the bakery case, but none that were of extreme interest to me this morning (the macaroons looked delicious though!) and there was plenty to of space that needed to be filled in, so I figured they had already sold out of many things. I also didnt know if they had other items available that weren't on display yet. At the counter my daughter ordered the Parisian and a bottle of water, and I chose the Bacon and Cheddar croissant bread pudding and a chocolate chip cookie. She was quite underwhelmed with her sandwich and complained of her mouth hurting from the bread. We ended up splitting the cookie after heating it up when we got home. She enjoyed it more than i did, but her final verdict was that the water was the best part of her meal. On the other hand, my bread pudding was pretty good and worth the price. It was a bit much for one person - definitely doable, but you wouldn't be mad if you split it, either. Another reviewer mentioned that it could have used a little something extra for a kick, and i agree. But i also think it's because i ate the whole thing. Overall, i thought it was good, and i'd get it again. In the end, Whisk didn't wow me like I'd hoped, but there are plenty of other offerings I'd like to try, so I will definitely visit again. read more

I never had a macaron prior to trying one from Whisk, however, I thought the fluffer-nutter flavor was unique and yummy. The size was also larger than expected and fun to eat. I love the variety of little bakeries popping up in the churchill area. Globehooper which was the coffe shop / cafe that whisk took over and a place I frequented often. I was very excited to check this place out and see what tasty selections they had to offer . Down to the goods , I got two croissants one chocolate and one plain and a macaroon ( which was HUGE). I wanted to check out the coffee selection but it was too late in the afternoon so thats definitely on my list to try next time . The croissants seemed kinda small but they were really flaky which was good , and the chocolate was the perfect amout of sweetness. Compared to sub rosas crossants it was ehh. They do have a good selecrion and flavors available especially in the muffin crossant department and always rotating. They also sell baguettes and on that particular day they did feature a apple tart thing but I am not sure if you could get it by the slice . Overall I would give whisk another chance.
