They even recommended a few other coffee shops to check out while I was visiting Richmond. I walked out feeling like I left a friend's place. The bakery is clean and full of natural light. All of their baked goods are made in house. They are known for their macarons. I tasted their white chocolate with raspberry filling. It was delicious. First time to Whisk this morning after walking by many times. Great pastries! Great, walkable location! Cute little place. Overall, I really enjoyed it with a small exception. As we were standing in line, I noticed stickers on the pastry case saying "Don't reach into the case." And I'm thinking, "why would I reach into the case? That's unfortunate that they have to tell people not to do that." So then it's our turn, and I want to know what kind of pastries they have, so I point to them, at which point the barista says "don't reach into the pastry case." So *pointing* counts as reaching into the case, and now I've been scolded by staff?! I find behavioral economics fascinating, and this strikes me as a situation where an easy solution would nudge customers to do what you want instead of setting them up to fail. First, you could just put little signs on your pastries so I know what I'm looking at and don't need to point. OR you could just spend the $50 or whatever to buy a bigger piece of glass so people don't make the mistake of crossing the invisible plane that separates "pastry case" from "not pastry case." So simple! And then I don't walk away from what would otherwise have been a lovely experience (yay! Pastries!) feeling dumb and scolded. Till then, beware, and approach your nice pastry experience with caution. read more

Big, I mean really BIG Macarons! I visited Richmond during the Covid-19 Pandemic and got to try Whisk. They were opening, but operating via online orders. This place is really famous for their gigantic macarons, baked goods and coffee. They offer baking class as well, but not during this time. I got a half dozen of a colorful and flavorful for ~$20. They were prepared pretty quickly and I was on my way. These aren't your average macarons. They are chewy with a soft crunch on the outside, sweet, but not overwhelming. Not the best macarons I've had, but pretty cool that they make them this big. The staff member was really helpful and friendly. Their website has a lot more info and is easy to navigate. I picked up a special order of their Sweet Corn cupcakes to share with my coworkers for my birthday. It was ready in the morning of the pre-scheduled day, and the pickup process was smooth. Since it was so early, I grabbed their seasonal cold brew to get my caffeine in for the day... guys, that was the best cup of coffee I have had in a while!! Whisk has the most aesthetically pleasing, delicious desserts in the area. The flavors of macarons are hit or miss- with more home runs than strike outs. For example (over the years), the lavender was so overpowering that it tasted like soap but the Thai tea macaron was so light in flavor where it tasted like nothing. I can't believe it's taken me this long to get my butt into Whisk! Finally! Courtesy of this sweet tooth! Given my lateness to the party, I got a sampler (lol): chocolate chip cookie, campfire cookie, whisker cookie, oatmeal sandwich cookie, vanilla eclair, chocolate tartlette and a salted caramel blondie. Let me start by saying all of it is above baseline good, BUT if you're very selective with your sweet calories like I am, there are some things that are better than others. I was a little disappointed in the chocolate chip cookie, my standard favorite. A little too hard. Same w/ the campfire cookie and the oatmeal sandwich cookie. Just too hard. (Stella's oatmeal sandwich cookie is to die for!) I wish the chocolate tartlette were a bit sweeter, though the crust is absolute perfection. The vanilla eclair was standard. The homeruns for me were the salted caramel blondie and the whisker cookie, which tastes just like an Oreo, but better. Those two are what I'll come back for, and of course I'll try whatever else I haven't tried. Those savory croissants look incredible. I didn't know they had a sandwich menu. I had this place bookmarked for a long time after seeing pictures of macarons this place has to offer and was finally able to try it out recently! I tried many different pastries (see pics), and they were all super good! The mixed berry macaron that I had was literally perfect: the perfect berry taste, the perfect little crisp to it, and the cream inside was not overwhelmingly sweet. Their menu rotates daily, but I'm sure all of their other macarons that they create are to the same perfection. They also sell icecream macarons which can be found in the mini freezer at the front of the store. The ambiance and overall atmosphere of this café/bakery is very pleasant & casual and makes it a great place to chill with a friend or two. Stopped in early on a Saturday morning before the threat of snow/ice was to strike. Had to drive around the block several times looking for an off street parking spot....there are none; you must park on the street. I had a cup of their Blanchards medium roast which is OK. I also had a slice of coffee cake. I asked for it to be heated...it was cold in the center. It's not a big shop, they have a few small tables and a bench/bar that overlooks main street. Whisk is a tiny coffee shop with quite limited seating, but very cute interior. They offer a great variety of sandwiches, pastries and gluten-free macarons. Their macarons are huge and a great price for the size. I got the mixed berry and grasshopper macarons, and both were delicious. My boyfriend and I vacationed in Richmond and visited Whisk for the first time today. The giant macarons drew us, so we had to get one, along with some other things. Boyfriend got a decaf cappuccino and said it was the best decaf espresso he's had in a while since it actually tasted like good coffee! His chocolate croissant was cold since the display case was cold and we didn't think to ask for it warmed - will do in the future. But it was incredibly flaky and a little crunchy from being slightly overdone but not greasy. I got an oat milk matcha latte that was perfectly sweetened and mixed well. And the blackberry macaron was good. The filling was a little on the buttery side than on the blackberry side as far as flavor, and a little heavy in texture, but the cookies were still velvety. Parking was pretty easy along the street and there was an ample amount of seating for the place being relatively small. They also have Clover rewards so recommend to download that app for a free pastry every 12 you buy. We'll be back! read more

I went today as I was in the neighborhood and craving something sweet and needed coffee. I tried the ice coffee, the PB&J macaroon, and the everything croissant. The iced coffee was really tasty and I added honey lavender syrup to it. It was sweet on it's own and I ruined it by adding creme to it *sigh*. And now for the croissant. OMG. It was SOOO good. I really got sad as I finished it because it was that good and I didn't want it to end. It was basically an everything bagel with chive cream cheese in the form of a croissant, but it was really tasty. The macaroon is huge! Great, unless you expect to be able to actuall sit down in a group and enjoy each other's company. Went there on 3/09/24 Has seating for mayber 20 at best. Unfortunately, the center table that seats 8 was occupied by 7 young women and one black man who didn't have any food or drink in front of them and yet didn't seem to care...evidently they were there for the wifi. Owner and/or staff didn't care. What good is it to have a restaurant if there's no seating available. Neither of the people behind the counter, one older white woman and one early 20's white guy, didn't seem to care. Highly not recommended. Both for lack of foresite in providing adequate seating and for lack of giving a crap who were occuppying the seats. Not at all recommended. Unless you like to enjoy your drinks and pastries out on the street. I guess this is what you can expect from the new millenial culture. read more

They may not be open for dining and sitting down with friends, but you can walk in to grab a pastry or coffee OR order ahead of time and pick up. My first impression was a great one! I was walking down Main Street and happened to notice Whisk was still open. It was about an hour before they were set to shutter for the night, so I asked my friend if she minded a quick pit stop. We walked in and I immediately was drawn to the pastry case. I heard that their mocha is incredible, and usually I would buy one, but I wasn't feeling it right then. But I did select the blueberry lemonade jumbo macaron, whisker cookie, and a blueberry muffin. Choosing just three items was extremely difficult for me. I was glad there were people ahead of me being served since I definitely needed that time to consider my options thoroughly. Heck, the blueberry muffin was a last-second​ adjustment as it was! Originally I was planning to order the coffee cake muffin. Point being: I need to return soon and explore more of their menu. This is probably my top three places in Richmond for pastries and desserts. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, so when I go to any coffee shop, I definitely look at what they offer in window. They have a rotating selection of pastries, and I don't think I haw ever gotten the same selection twice. They always have macaroons in the shop, but I would always hands down go with the savory optioNs. One time I got a feta and spinach croissant thing, and I really wanted to buy 5 of them but my wallet cannot sustain that type of lifestyle. The shop is pretty decent sized. It has a couple of large tables in the front, a bar by the window, and a couple of tables at the back. As a result, if you're coming to study be prepared to be in close proximity to other people. When I scheduled a girls weekend with a friend in Richmond, I knew we had to check out a local coffee shop and Whisk wasn't too far from where we were staying. We were both BLOWN AWAY by the place. The building itself was super neat and had a cool vibe to it -- could definitely see myself posting up there for a few hours with my laptop to get some work done. The case of pastries grabs your attention right away when you walk in, and let me tell you, those macarons -- phenomenal. I stopped in again before leaving Richmond at the end of the weekend to get some to take home with me. My friend and I stopped in for breakfast one morning and both got breakfast sandwiches. It was probably the best egg, bacon and cheese sandwich I've ever had. The egg and bacon are baked together, almost in a quiche-type form and then placed on the most amazing croissant with the cheese added. Amazing. My iced vanilla latte was right on point and my friend really enjoyed her sandwich and iced coffee. It was the perfect find for the weekend. The staff was also super friendly and helpful with menu suggestions. Will definitely be a regular stop any time I'm in Richmond. read more

Had a lovely morning at Whisk - a cute café in Richmond that is a perfect place to study or catch up with a friend. They have a variety of sweet and savory pastries to choose from, ranging from buttery croissants to muffins to giant macarons. They have a number of seasonal things on their menu like the sundried tomato and goat cheese croissant, which is a light and delicious snack. It is warm and buttery with a creamy goat cheese spread with a nice hint of sundried tomato. They also have breakfast croissant sandwiches on the weekend. Their iced coffee was very refreshing with a twinge of lemon. Some of their specialties that often sell out are the kouign amann (QUEEN-ah-mahn) - sweet buttery French pastries with many layers; and ice cream macarons (!).
