My friend and I needed to grab a quick dinner before attending an event right across the street so we opted to visit Whirled Pies. It was 5 o'clock on a Thursday and there was only one other table occupied so service was quick indeed! From ordering to leaving, we were only there for 40 minutes- which is exactly what we needed on that specific day. [rating this place as avenue.] my friend played a show here and I ended up getting there late, after 10p.m. Since there was a live band they were still serving a full bar and a select menu of pizza by the slice. The location of the venue is perfect. There is street parking and if the street parking is full there are two lots within a block that only charge if there's some huge event. The acoustics are amazing, I haven't heard better sound in a venue since I can remember. It let me really enjoy soul vibrator, a seven instrument funk band that knows how to jam. I really appreciated being able to take in all of the sounds and music. It was like listening with thousand dollar headphones. And that was true regardless of how full or empty the venue was. The full bar was nice as well. I had a slice of the pesto pizza, I would like to try this place when they're actually serving the purpose of serving pizzas. It's probably pretty good. This is my second time trying them and both times the food was bad. I gave them a second try thinking the first could have been a one off but the second time was bad too. The pizzas both tasted like they were grocery store freezer pizzas. The crust had that previously frozen texture and feel, the sauce was watery. I really really wanted to like whirled pies more. I've heard good things. The garlic pinwheels were very flavorful. Would definitely recommend. I did feel however the dough wasn't proofed enough. A little undercooked with a burnt bottom. I preferred the bites that were burnt actually. The marinara was under seasoned and had no depth. Very basic, under salted tomato flavor. Went ok with the garlic whirls. I ordered the yell "o" pizza with olives. The dough was flavorless, with a light chew. The center was saggy by the time I got it. I would ask for the pizza cooked well done if I were to order again. Just really was underwhelmed. I am curious about their moonshine sauce and Stromboli. So I will likely order again. read more

I'm about to say something that could be considered controversial. When it comes to downtown Eugene locations that offer pizza by the slice, I prefer Whirled Pizza. Their pizza tastes fresher, I enjoy their veggie pizza because it's packed with flavor thanks to their pesto sauce. My husband and I split their Artichoke Flower, artichoke dip surrounded by little pizza dough petals for dipping. Just a huge carb bomb but after a few brewskies it's exactly what the body needs. There's a lot to say about Whirled Pies, but lets start with this -- This is my favorite pizza in Eugene. I've only sampled the various vegetarian slices here, but they always make me pause after the first bite and say "wow, that is special". Maybe it's the slightly chewy cheese and the crisp flavorful dough, the aroma of the fresh basil.. I really appreciate the use of seasonal ingredients like zucchini and chantrelle mushrooms. Creative options keep me coming back for more... They also have a great local beer selection that rotates often... it's not just the usual stuff you see everywhere. Besides food, Whirled Pies also serves a venue/event space hosting a lot of local and touring bands, comedians, benefit shows, open-mics....It's a large space with lots of seating throughout the venue. I've been here for various events and always had a great time. They also host free events which cater to the community and help empower kids. Did I mention the giant mural on one of the walls? It's worth checking out. This is a great place to grab a bite before walking over to a show at WOW Hall. Definitely stop in and show some support to this great community asset! read more

Forgot to put my order in and didn't charge for it. Didn't find out until everyone's door came out. They offered to charge for it and make it however the rest of the party was already almost finished eating at that point. The proper way to have handled this was to at least offered to make it and NOT charge for that order. Sitting here hungry and annoyed. My calzone arrived very squishy on the bottom. I flipped it over and let it sit for a minute before eating. The homemade sausage tastes like hamburger. The calzone in general was very bland. The red sauce tastes like plain canned tomato sauce. All of this with the addition of being squishy made me not want to eat here again. read more

I miss Cosmic, and the Monroe street whirled pies. Prices have gone up and quality has gone down. Luckily for their business they sell alcohol and are in the same building as a music venue. They still have v*gan options, I guess. Their pizza, calzones and garlic whirls can be made v*gan, but they no longer have daiya cheeze. Instead they make their own "cashew sauce" which costs $1.50 extra. Unfortunately the sauce is really just a glorified garlic butter; they supposedly put some in my whirls, but it must have mostly evaporated because it was unnoticeable. I can't imagine how dry the v*gan calzones must be. They also no longer have veg proteins/mock meats. It seems they're trying to phase out their veg customers :( read more

I'd love to go to this establishment on a regular basis, as I appreciate the beautiful murals, the down home come-as-you are hippie vibes, & the awesome variety of bands & events that often play here. However, whoever usually does the sound for the music has it turned up WAY too loud for the space, and it's just painfully awful. It destroys the quality of the music. I've showed up, bought food, and then the band started and it was such an ear blast that I decided to take my food to go, get my cover refunded, and leave. Even with earplugs. Plus, who goes to a show to wear earplugs if you are there for the music? It's a shame, because this place would be one of my go to places in Eugene if it were not for the hard-of-hearing sound person. The music is mixed well, but the master volume is much too loud for the space. Being exposed to music at such high volumes causes hearing loss and I'm horrified when I've seen kids in here without earplugs, or even adults for that matter. I ordered a pizza recently along with a Caesar salad, and the salad was pretty much criminal. Only the crunchy watery bits of the lettuce covered in their house "Caesar dressing" which tasted like water + balsamic vinegar. Pizza was limp and greasy. I ordered a calzone through GrubHub and was very disappointed once I got my food. After the long wait I get the calzone and it's so soggy its practically leaking from the box. I was totally willing to overlook this because at this point I was starving. Unfortunately, I was met with even more disappointment once I finally cut into the thing. It was shockingly undercooked, to the point that it was inedible. The calzone looked as if it had seen the inside of the oven for about 2 seconds, the underside of the top was all raw stringy dough. Stopped in for a taste of the different. The problem is, different is not always good. The calzone I had was not the greatest. The dough tasted like dough. Yes, that is a problem. It had no seasoning. And the cheesy garlic bread was way too garlic. The bathroom walls are scrawled on as if the place is a dive bar. Covered with what patrons must've considered to be deep philosophy and clever sayings, but instead came off as half baked stoner talk. On top of everything else, the live music was so loud we could not hear one another. Personally, I love live music. I played in a band. I also like conversation, especially with my meals. In fairness, my lady did enjoy the pizza, even if I do not share the sentiment. It definitely has a Eugene, later day hippy flair. That is about all it has.
