Gorgeous selection of formal gowns. Something for everyone. I did not buy today, however I will be back in the future no question when the time is right. The dresses are pricey but beautiful, worth it, and the selection and service is unlike anywhere I've been! No pressure, and lots of support from the staff. All 3 of the ladies that helped me today were fantastic!! I think buying a designer gown is a splurge everyone should have at least once. We stopped by on Friday for a very last minute shopping trip for my daughter's sweet 16 dress NEXT WEEKEND! The staff was incredible. They helped us each step of the way and hyped up my beautiful daughter with each dress she tried on. We picked a gorgeous gown from their huge selection and got set up with in house alterations, with a quick turn around to have her perfect dress ready for her big day! We went way over our planned budget, but it felt worth every Penny. Expect to pay no less than $500 and alterations were $215 for our dress. *They did have a small selection of sale dresses around $200, but it was a pretty limited selection. read more

If I could give them a 1/2 star I would. I visited the Dallas location to shop for a prom dress for my daughter. We drove 3 hours to shop here. I had been looking on their website and came across some dresses with the price being $278.00. When we arrived at the store, this dress was not $278.00 but almost $550.00. I showed the salesperson the website which i was informed was a 3rd party website and it was a mistake. I talked with several employees before the manager came up to the front. He started into the same thing about how this was a mistake on the website. I said it was still their website. He never once stated he would honor this price until I told him I was giving him a bad review. I walk out of the store and he proceeds to follow me outside to talk me out of going to Terry Costas. By this time after driving and searching for days on the website, I was not about to shop there. I told him he should have done this to begin with and went to leave. He than asked if he could talk me out of leaving a bad review. This is not the way to manage any business. If you advertise it, no matter how you have your website set up, you should honor the prices. So in the future, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AT THIS PLACE. read more

Cadence was super helpful and lovely today. I tried on probably 10 dresses and she was so kind in assisting with zippers and feedback on alterations if needed. I found a dress that I love for a formal event which I was nervous about when walking in. After the dress and alterations I'm leaving at about 1k in spending but the ease in having alterations made there and her assistance made it worth it to me. If I do have events in the future I will be back. read more

Nice dress selection but very limited sizes and very high prices. I had purchased a dress here (that did not need any alterations) ages ago for a school dance and it was cheaply made but fine. This time I was shopping for a wedding dress. There is a bridal section in the back, which is apparently owned by David's Bridal. I found a dress there, but it was way too small. The sales person assured me they could add a corset lace up to the back and make it work - and do it in my super short time frame (3 weeks). I asked if swapping the brown tulle layers for a different color was feasible, and was told absolutely, but I needed to go buy the fabric up the street at Hobby Lobby. I bought the fabric and came back. The alterations person was not with David's Bridal - they were with a third company called Magic Stitch. There was a line - so I watched as the lady working pinned a wedding dress so tightly on the woman ahead of me that she could not walk or sit, which the bride nervously complained about and had re-pinned. When it was my turn it was close to closing time and the lady working just eyeballed where the lace up back needed to start on my dress, instead of having me try it on. She couldn't give me a quote at the time because she needed to consult with the seamstress about swapping the tulle layers. Nobody returned my calls and voicemails for a week. I finally just went in and the seamstress was there - and quoted me $800 to do the alterations, which was outrageous. We negotiated down to $600 given my now 2 week timeline (because they wasted the first week doing nothing), but for $600 and the $900 I paid for the dress, I could have just purchased something that fit properly from a higher quality store in the first place. Very disappointed, but since they do not accept returns and wasted an entire week not returning my voicemails I was stuck with it. I will never shop there again. read more

My grandmother and I came into whatchamacallit looking for a prom dress. We've come here before for my homecoming dress and had amazing service before and the ladies there were super helpful and sweet, however this was not the case this time. Someone led us to a fitting room and told us i could use it to try on dresses. Nobody offered to help us at all or offered to help me zip or lace up any of the beautiful dresses I had picked out. This was very frustrating and when we walked out we were given very dirty looks and were told if that's how yall feel after saying very politely that nobody was helping so we were going to go somewhere else instead. as someone who also works retail I couldnt imagine ever giving a customer dirty looks or an attitud. read more

After searching online for a prom dress for my daughter, and being overwhelmed with scams, I decided to try this store. The atmosphere was nothing special in terms of decor and was reminiscent of a warehouse. This was a positive for us because there were several dresses to choose from. For others, it could be easily overwhelming. I am thankful for Dee, as she helped us navigate the choices. She was friendly and seemed genuinely invested in helping us make our selection. The prices are not inexpensive, but as the old adage states, "You get what you pay for." Good selection, great customer service. read more

Don't go to this one. Go to the Ft. Worth store. They will actually help you and if they don't have exactly what you are looking for, unlike the Dallas location, they will help you find something that's comparable. If you need to order it online and don't have a lot of time for it to get to you by the event date, they'll actually suggest other designers that are more local and able to ship quicker. The ladies in the Dallas store are just there to collect a paycheck and maybe commission and possibly online orders don't garner commission for them, so they don't want to fully assist with the online orders. Customer service is everything in this industry. I'll also add that the dresses were dirty from everyone trying them on, zippers broke, clasps falling off, sequins and beads falling off everywhere. They are a MESS. Why do I want to buy a broke-down, dirty dress for $800, only to turn around and have to pay another $200-300 to get it fixed and cleaned? That's right. I don't. Again, great store if you go to Ft. Worth location. There you will get personable help. read more

Thank you for having enough respect for normal size girls to provide a good selection of dresses in sizes above 12. The majority of the population in the US wears a 12 or above. My daughter is a healthy teenager with a healthy--not fat--body. She has an athletic build and has curves. She does not wear a size 2,4, or 6. Girls her age should not feel ashamed to shop for a prom dress and be presented with a handful of choices and we were not disappointed when we visited Whatchamacallit. read more

Althea was absolutely incredible to work with . I've never been fitted for a formal dress. I was definitely feeling shy and overwhelmed about the entire process. Althea took one look at me and immediately started selecting dresses that would compliment my figure. She was so sweet and I felt completely comfortable around her. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. Althea made my event feel very special and exciting. I lost my mama a year ago.. So to walk into a formal boutique like this completely alone and not having my person there to help me select the perfect dress was bittersweet. However you will have to wait for them to mail it to you-so you can't use it as you are buying a dress. Write a review and wait for them to send it to you and then come and get a dress. I highly, highly recommend this business. I found myself in a pickle needing a dress for a fancy occasion. The dress I ordered on-line didn't fit and was non-returnable. The two local tailor shops I visited were unable to help as I needed the dress to be ready in 5 days and they were swamped with Christmas alterations so I was feeling pretty hopeless - then I found this place. I was amazed at the number of beautiful formal and evening dresses they had to select from in the size that I needed. Not only that, but the "angel" who was helping me, Holly, let me know that they have their own in-house alterations department. Luckily, I had my dress with me in the car and I dropped it off with them and after the two other tailors both told me it would take 2 weeks before they could have my dress ready, I was absolutely floored when this place called me the NEXT DAY to let me know my dress was ready to pick up! Not only that, but they did a fantastic job!!! Next time I need a dress for a fancy event, I'm skipping the mall and heading straight over here! read more

Rhinestone and Sequins EVERYWHERE! everything has beading, sequins or gems somewhere on it. and dont bother asking any of the tailors to make alterations. even though you said you dont care about the cost!!! apparently EVERY DRESS was unable to be changed to remove the decorative sequins and rhinestones..really? i actually bravely peeled a few off and remarked at how difficult that was. no glue mark left or anything. practically fell off. the sales girl looked stunned when the male tailor reused to help. she told us when we left "im sorry i guess he is having a bad day because we remove rhinestones ALL the time from all diff dresses" well you lost a customer and possibly lots of extra money for alterations. read more

Several of the dresses have been there way too long. Many look like they have been tried on 1000 times. Alterations is a TOTAL RIP OFF. Horrible, HORRIBLE experience! The dress had not even been started on the day of pick up. Many other moms & daughters came & went while we waited. All with similar experiences. The alterations were VERY sloppy and unprofessional. In NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM should you have anything altered here. NOT ONE TIME in the several hours I was there did I hear an actual sewing machine running. ALL ALTERATIONS were being hand sewn and 1/2 ass at best. The bralette inside the dress was/is tacked on in three places instead of being properly sewn. When I inquired I was told to "tape it down." I heard this said to other moms/daughters too. Our dress wasn't properly hemmed. What they do is gather it up & tack it here or there to make it shorter. The dresses do not hang right as a result. NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR A $1200 dress. ALTERATIONS WERE $250!!!!! read more

Beautiful dress selections, but was very disappointed in the alteration part of the store. They never reached back out to say when the dress was ready, and the dress came back dirty and they didn't fix everything they said they would to the extent they said. Not to mention it is overpriced and costs almost as much as the dresses. I would recommend going there to get your dress but go somewhere else to get your alterations. read more

If you are a person of color and plus size DO NOT COME HERE!! I went to try to find a wedding dress since I'm doing a non traditional color. I found the one but by the time I came back it was out of stock. I was so sad but I was told by and employee maybe then can special order I said okay fingers cross. She brought over the manger Alexandria Graham. As soon as she saw me she was very dismissive and very rude. I specifically said if I can special order I don't mind paying upfront or extra for the dress and time frame is not issue since my wedding is not until October. She wouldbearly Let me talk and interrupted me saying no it's not possible prom season is over. Then continued to whisper to the front desk man saying we especially don't have it for plus people. I was like so shocked because I know if I was white and skinny she would have treated me a different way. She said maybe I can make a call and she if they are still making the cut. She sighed the whole time while doing this. She wanted to put no effort into this. I left my name and number on 3-25-23 I still have yet to get a follow up call even if it was just to inform me it can't be done. I contacted the reatailer from the dress which is Amarra to confirm this was true or were they in fact being racist and fatphobic. I confirmed with them and it can be special ordered through there retailers and Watchamacallit was one of them which confirms my accusations. I will be making a report with the TWC and contacting a lawyer. Again DONT COME HERE. They are racist and Fatphobic!!!!! read more

Hands down the best place I've gone dress shopping in Dallas. They've got more Jovani and Sherri Hill than any other store in north Texas for sure, and they're all out in the open and easy to browse through, not bagged and packed in. I will still recommend them, just be sure you go a day before you need the tux to pick it up in case it needs tweaking.

Once again, I was promptly and warmly greeted by the store staff, who directed me to the appraiser again. It was the same appraiser that was present previously. Again, my presence is an inconvenience to her. I tell her why I'm there, and she tells me to go to the store portion. I tell her they directed me back here, so she calls the store staff via her phone and refers to me as a "little girl." I went back to the store portion and the same staff apologized for the miscommunication, and began helping me retrieve the items I had previously agreed to consign. The remainder of my interaction with her was very pleasant. It is quite disheartening writing a review like this, considering my only reason for doing so was the negative experiences I had with a single person.

The lady helping me get dressed onsite said my dress had likely already been worn either in a show and/or purchased by someone else and resold. Pretty upsetting. All in all, the selection is vast but the prices start around 350$ so I would be optimistic yet cautious in purchasing from here.

The good: Great selection of one-of-a-kind pieces that will put your mind at ease about any "girl wearing same dress as me and looking hotter than me in it at same party" nightmares. The bads: I purposefully am ignoring grammar/English rules to emphasize that the bad points completely overwhelm Whatchamacallit's one good quality. So here we go: - Like the other reviewers said, it's absolute madness with a dash of insane chaos in the store. I don't know which mad hatter decided to organize the store in this manner, but it won't make sense to sane people. - Prices. Eeeek! They're super steep! Expect to shell out (on average) at least $450 for a decent dress. Also keep in mind that alterations will take of your remaining arm and leg. But more about that below... - Service. Or lack thereof. You would think that as disorganized as the store is and the cost they are asking their customers to shell out for what basically is a collection of dusty taffeta (that's a fabric, right?), there would at least be a helpful associate, right? Not so -- apparently that's asking for too much when you're only willing to spend $500 on a dress you'll wear for 4 hours. (read: sarcasm) - Dirty. Place smells like dirty feet with a light essence of bo. Lovely. So anywhooo, I bought a gorgeous plum colored dress here that needed to be hemmed. The estimate from whatcha was $400. Ummmm no. I'm not going to shell out $400 in addition to the $500 dress to get it to look right. I scoffed, paid for the dress, and went straight to Sung over at A+ Tailor in Denton (reviewed) and she made magic happen for a quarter of whatcha's estimate. Also, whatcha said that they would need at least 3 weeks for the work to get done, Sung had it done in 4 days. Moral: Always have a fairy godmother in the form of a fabulous tailor (I recommend Sung) to swoop in and save the day. read more

Don't shop at this store. The prices for the dresses are too high for the quality...just go down the street to Terry Costa. There are undocumented workers working at this store including an older salesperson and a young woman in the alterations department. When I spoke to a salesperson about why the undocumented hispanic lady in the alterations department would work in what are sweat shop conditions, she told me she couldn't work elsewhere because she was illegal. It's sad really because the two people who are in charge of alterations are completely incompetent and are completely taking advantage of this poor girl's situation. Should I had bothered to actually purchase the overpriced dress I was considering, I MOST certainly would have not used their alterations department. The lady fitting my hem was using tailors chalk and telling me I look like a Miss America. Someone must explain to this woman that the use of tailors chalk on such overpriced dresses is a no no. Also, while I was looking in the mirror to decide if I should buy this overpriced dress, there were problems with other customers behind me concerning their alterations. Since Thursday, I have spoken to friends who have also told me horror stories of their experience at this store. Don't bother wasting your time here. They obviously believe it necessary to have to resort to such unprofessional and illegal means to make a buck. read more

I honestly do not understand why there are negative reviews of this place. WhatchamaCallit is an amazing store! I have gone here for the past 2 years to get banquet dresses. Both times, I have had an incredible experience. Not only do you walk out with a beautiful dress, but you walk out feeling uplifted and in high spirits because of how kind and encouraging the sales people are. Althea Davis has helped me find a stunning dress both years. She is the sweetest, most helpful employee there. She remembered me from last year and pours her heart out into each customer that walks in. If you come here, request Althea to help you find a dress. Not only does she make you look like a million bucks, but she makes you feel like a million bucks. Highly recommend this store and its amazing employees!! read more

The staff was very helpful, as soon as I walked in someone was helping me find dresses and bringing me things that I might like! I had my dressing room over flowing with gorgeous dresses to try on! I found the perfect dress, it just took a few minor adjustments, because of my small size which was no problem cause right in the store is an alteration shop. They fixed my dress no problem! They made me so stress free about my prom! My dress fits perfectly now! I give them five stars because they completely deserve it! When I see these other reviews they have me in shock because it was the total opposite for me! I definitely recommend coming here for any formal event such as weddings, prom, or winter formal. My daughter and I shopped here last weekend for her homecoming dress. When I walked in, I was a bit overwhelmed with all the beautiful dresses they have in their inventory. Their very helpful employee, Athlea, saw the "deer in headlights" look on my face and took over! She was VERY HELPFUL and did an incredible job helping my daughter pick out the right dress! She made our visit a pleasant one and I will continue to shop here from now on! They have an on-site seamstress (which was very nice)! While I was waiting on the alterations to be completed, I had the pleasure of meeting the owners of the store! They were both very nice people and took the time to visit with me and my daughter! I shopped at WhatchamaCallit when I was was in high school, now I'm back with my daughter shopping for her prom dress. Our personal shopper, Tracy Kaplan, was phenomenal. She made the process so much easier, fun and stress-free for us. I do think their prices are high for the average buyer, but the dresses are gorgeous, and the selection is amazing! They have every color and style you could ever wish to find. I would advise going WAY before the crowds start shopping for prom dresses. I can see how it could get crazy with a bunch of girls trying on the same dresses and the same sizes. We went right after New Year's, and that was the perfect time. We were just in there this past weekend and the service was amazing and it was super busy. Caitlyn was very sweet and professional the whole time with my daughter-Charity. I was afraid it would be unorganized but it wasn't. They had a great system from the time you needed a dressing room up to the point of sale. We ended up having to order the dress that we wanted and they did that in an organized manner as well. The manager even helped with this process. I brought my daughter in all the way from Shreveport, La. We were looking for a presentation dress for Homecoming court. The entire store just had this way of making you feel like you are the ONLY customer in the store. Keep in mind this was a Saturday and the store was PACKED. The customer service there is top notch. We had gone to a similar dress shop down the street before going into WhatchmaCallit and they didn't even greet us or cared when we left after 5 minutes of being ignored. Really stupid on their part because I had an unlimited budget to work with. We found the dress of her dreams. They were so helpful and so accommodating! I took my daughter to pick out a prom dress. I'll admit I was kind of dreading the process due to previous dress shopping experiences with long lines and cranky sales people. We started early so that helps, but Alexa made this trip a surprisingly pleasant experience. She was so helpful and had a great attitude even when things got busier and she was running her legs off! She was genuine and gave her honest opinion about what looked best on my daughter. And the best part is she found her dress, so we are done! We started our at Terry Costa. What a WASTE OF TIME! They didn't have any of the dresses that my daughter saw online and didn't offer to order anything. They were of little or no help at all. Then we went to WHATCHAMACALLIT and, yes they were busy, but that is because they are the only fashion shop around that has any type of in stock selection. All of the salespeople were very helpful with advice, removing dresses we decided against, or even getting shoes for my daughter to wear as she tried on her dresses. This store is awesome and the staff is great!! I found out it is under new management abuot 18mths now. After reading some reviews I was skeptical, but this was such a great shopping experience. I brought my dad who hates shopping and he said it was the most pleasant shopping experience he had ever had. I found a terrific dress for a very good price and my sales person (Althea) was amazing. Just purchased daughters prom dress here. HUGE selection to choose from. Recommend working with Sheridan. She was knowledgeable on all the dresses and what styles and colors worked on my daughter. Even though it was crazy busy she took her time to help my daughter find the perfect dress, shoes, and accessories. The prices were comparable to what we had found on line but also got a deal on buying jewelry and shoes with the dress. One stop shopping!!!! I find it funny that "Highland P" claims that the workers are undocumented. I bet she can tell citizenship status while driving, or dining out too. What a bigot. The alterations room is quite nice, and perhaps she should educate herself of what defines a sweat shop, and it's not the presence of a sewing machine, or an accent. I started shopping at Whatchamacallit in 1995 for prom, and continued to shop there until I moved out of state last year. Yes the dresses are pricey, but Magic Stitch was able to alter every garment to my shape as if I was wearing true couture. read more

Alice (may have been spelled Alyce) was absolutely wonderful! She helped my daughter find the perfect dress and boosted her confidence as well. She managed several guests and dressing rooms all at once and was kind, honest and professional. She knew what was flattering and even had my daughter trying on different shapes and keeping an open mind. This store is 3 hrs from our home but we would come back everytime for service like this! I have bought a number of exquisite dresses from WhatchamaCallit over the years and they are extremely high-quality and just absolutely beautiful. Tracy has helped me a number of times and she always finds just the right dress for the occasion and also makes sure that any alterations are carried out perfectly. In this regard, they also have an excellent in-house alterations department which is very convenient and does beautiful work. Our experience was delightful! Tori was an amazing helper. At the end, when we were taking photos of "I bought the dress!" A sweet old man who happened to be the owner came over to us helping us take the perfect photo and when he saw that the dress we bought was Sherri Hill, he gave us a free crew neck that said Sherri Hill on it and he even texted Sherri Hill's Facebook management to post it on it. We went in to Whatchamacallit in search of my daughter homecoming dress. Going in to the store we were slightly overwhelmed by the dresses, but luckily we recieved help right away. The best dress store that we've been to yet. A wonderful lady named Althea davis (I highly recommend you ask for her) helped us find the perfect homecoming dress for me. Lots of selections to pick from. Customer service was wonderful and every worker was ready to help you in every which way they could. And the way they work with you to size dresses that are too big is unlike any other store I've ever been too. It's hard to explain but they really help you visualize what a dress fitted to your body would look like so it's easier to decide. Having a store where you can just go and buy an affordable dress same day is such an amazing option. I cannot recommend Mollys bridal enough. Please please please to visit them!
