I stopped by today after reading all of the wonderful reviews to get a haircut. Unfortunately it seems the hours posted here in Yelp are wrong. Based on a sign in the window, the shop is only open Thursday through Saturday, 7.30-4. I hope to write a proper review when I am able to return for a haircut, but will, for now, leave a neutral 3 stars. read more

Just a quick update 3 years later: I've since been to many barbers in many places (in this country and elsewhere), and no matter where I go, nobody has matched the haircut Elisa gives me. They either grow in inconveniently or it's a cut I didn't even ask for, but I know I can walk into this place and not even have to say anything anymore. She just knows, and she'll always fix it in half the time. While my first reception wasn't exactly welcoming (I was asked my name over a buzzer, then greeted with an expectant stare when I walked in - I assume this is because appointments are recommended), I very quickly felt taken care of. Even as a walk-in, my wait wasn't too long (maybe 10 minutes at most), and Elisa took me on and without any hesitation or questioning, gave me a gentle, meticulous, high-quality haircut. I saw several other hair types in there - including a woman - and she dealt with them all expertly, so don't assume this is only a place for the old men of the Westchester. The atmosphere was cozy - I was the only one who didn't speak Italian (Elisa and her Saturday colleague Carmelo both are from Italy), yet I didn't mind, as I was in no way neglected because of it. Handel was on the radio and Pavarotti was on the wall. Elisa finished me off and said "if I go any shorter, I'll have to wait longer for you to come back!" Then she complimented me on my sweater and I left with a new regular barbershop. (The location is pretty hidden - as a previous reviewer said, the door is on the basement level, to the left of the main entrance at 3 o'clock on the circle.) read more

Elle at The Westchester Studio is so talented she could qualify as a magician. I went in for a haircut and left with a hair style. A short, stylish, age appropriate hair style that I never thought could work on me, and that I now totally rock. I have thiiiiiiiiiiiiick hair. The kind of thick that hairdressers don't appreciate until they start cutting and realize how long the appointment will be. That I can sport short hair without looking like a mushroom is a miracle, made possible by Elle - who actually knows how to CUT hair to look good, as opposed to blow drying hair into a style that can never be replicated. I don't own a tool beyond a blow dryer, and yet my hair still looks good weeks after its been cut. Because Elle knows what she's doing. She took me from high school long hair to a sleek, sexy cut - from pony tail to put together. Highly, highly, highly recommend her for revamping your look. She's a perfectionist and will know what suits you better than you will. And she offers a 2-week open period if you're not 100% happy with a cut, which you absolutely will be. She's amazing. I finally found a stylist worth a return visit. PROS: Cut is $45. Elle listens to your hair habits, to what you have in mind - then she actually gives you the cut you see (and long for) in magazines. Ample, free parking with no time limit on the westchester grounds. CONS: She's a perfectionist, expect at least 90 minutes, possibly 2 hours. Try her, she is amazing. Went to Elisa last week to get a haircut (23 y/o male) for an interview. Really exceptional haircut, one of the best I've had. Normally I have to explain how I want it cut during the process, but she got it perfect the first time. It will continue to look good as it grows out. Elisa is the best for women's haircuts! Don't think that she only does hair for men! She gives the best haircuts in town. I've gone to some of the most expensive places in DC and Elisa is better (and costs MUCH less). Everyone remarks about how nice my hair looks since I've started going to Elisa! I recently moved to Wesley Heights and was looking for a barber near me. Well, yelp to the rescue. I thought I would give Westchester Barbershop a try. The previous reviews were outstanding. Parking was easy, no permit needed. It took a moment to find it, but everyone was very helpful. It's the awning to the left of the center building entrance. It's a small green awning. Elisa introduced herself to me and thanked me for coming. She was amazing. One of the best mens haircuts I've had in a long time. All for 20 bucks (The price will climb to $25 mid September 2015, it's been 20 for 15 years, so 5 bucks is no big deal). Clean, friendly and a great cut. I found a new barber. read more

I have lived in Boston for a year and am here in DC just for summer, and Elisa is the only barber who got my hair right! I am so happy with the finished product! In addition, she is such a lovely woman - I enjoyed my conversations with her. She also plays beautiful classical music, and the shop is very clean and comfortable. I highly recommend her to people of all ages, and even if you come from another part of DC, it's worth the drive! First time with Elisa will not be the last. She immediately honed in on the "bump" in the back of my skull. She said she will cut it in a way that with my next cut we can begin "compensating" for the bump. It is not a cow-lick but even when I had a military buzz-cut it has bothered me. Elisa cuts my hair (50 yr. old male), my 11 year old son's hair and styles my 9 year old daughter's hair. She does exactly what you ask her to do, unlike so many stylists, is quick and efficient, and capable of doing very elaborate and beautiful work with my daughter's long blonde hair. I cannot hesitate to recommend her, she is equally adept at summer crew cuts for men and boys and anything a girl or woman asks for. Men and boys can easily walk in and get haircuts on the spot, or with a short wait if there are other customers ahead of you. I used to come here since it is relatively cheaper than the other haircutting options in the area. However, my most recent visit was not only disappointing, but downright horrible. Elisa cut the back of my right ear with her trimmer, and did not even say anything! It wasn't until I returned home that I felt the blood on my ear and understood why she did not show me the back of my head using a mirror like always. I wouldn't have been upset had she apologized, but this pretending like nothing happened is dishonest and could have been dangerous. Definitely not coming back. read more

I found Elisa when my husband followed Luigi to the Westchester, and I have been going to her for several years. Everything the other reviewers say is true. She's a great stylist and really really good on color. So good that most people in my life don't seem to have even noticed that my hair is colored, but I get compliments on the lovely color of my hair. Or, to put it another way, the color is subtle, well matched to my face & personality, while covering the grey -- exactly what most women want. As others have said, the place is tucked away, not glitzy salon, with classical radio playing (a nice change from the loud pop music in so many salons) -- a calm, friendly barber shop environment that is a pleasant respite from frenetic daily life. Despite appearances, you can get the full services for women of a salon -- with very reasonable prices. You do need to be able to pay by cash or check. (There is a cash machine in the Westchester grocery store, but it was out of order the one time I tried it, and it's a bit of a hike to find it.) For just cuts (particularly men & kids) walk in is fine. For more (like a cut & color/perm) it's a good idea to call her for an appointment. That said, she can often fit you in the same day -- another nice difference from the typical ladies hair salon. read more

I came to know Elisa as a former customer of the the great Luigi of the former Friendship Barber Shop. Luigi moved his business to the Westchester Barbershop before retiring a short time later. While I miss Luigi and his Italian humor, I have discovered a heart of gold in Elisa. In addition to being such a wonderful woman and offering a pleasant, calm atmosphere for her barbershop, she knows how to cut hair! She is very talented and efficient and you will walk away happy with your new look! A few suggestions: bring enough cash for the haircut and tip. If you become a regular customer (and I think you should), perhaps get her number and call ahead. Finding the barbershop can be a little tricky. Enter through the Westchester complex main gate (right fork off of Cathedral Ave.), drive straight to the first traffic circle. As you enter the traffic circle at 6:00, try to find parking around 1:00 or 2:00 (directionally) on the circle. There is a main entrance to the apartments at 3:00 on the circle but her barbershop is located best via a smaller, curvy cement/brick walkway that takes you to a single grey metal door with a window. This door is located more at 1:00 or 2:00 on the traffic circle, just to the left of the main entrance. Simply knock on the door and someone (probably Elisa) will open it for you. You may have a short wait. If so, hang your coat, sit down, read the paper, enjoy the classical music, and maybe eat at candy or two. Then enjoy your haircut and conversation with Elisa and leave a more relaxed person than you arrived! read more

Who knew such a talented stylist was right under my nose at The Westchester? I am now hooked on Elle -- she is indeed very tuned into each client's needs. I'm the opposite of the earlier reviewer with super thick hair as mine is as baby fine as it comes. She really knows how to deal with fine hair and finds the perfect style balance between professional and cool. She's also superb with hair color. She fixed a really bad cut and color job from my last stylist that was practically miraculous. Be prepared to spend more time than you are used to as she takes her time to get things just right. read more

I got what I considered a hack job. She started cutting with scissors but then switched over to clippers to speed things up, which didn't make sense since there was nobody else waiting to get their hair done. The final result was that the haircut was uneven/choppy everywhere. . The haircut took about 10 minutes and should have cost 50 cents rather than $20. read more
