I have gone to this salon for a little over a year. Initially, I thought the service was good, so I continued to go there. My most recent service was disappointing. It was a regular pedicure and I was only in the chair about 30 minutes. The technician usually asks what kind of service I would like, but this time she didn't, and I mistakenly assumed it would be the longer service with a massage and hot towels. That's on me. I should have clarified that at the beginning. After waiting about 20 minutes to let the polish dry, I noticed there was still dirt in the area around my big toe and when I asked the technician to fix it, I had to wait until she could tend to me. She then picked out the dirt out without resoaking my foot. That was a little uncomfortable. She only used a clipper, not the pick. I believe the reason for that was the pick was not in the sealed sanitized pack of utensils, only the clipper was. I saw that when she opened the sealed package at the start of my service. This leads me to believe that the salon is skimping on what utensils they have sanitized. I'm now reluctant to ever go back to this salon. I would give Nail Avenue zero stars, if it was an option. I stopped going to Nail Avenue over two years ago for numerous reasons. all of them relate to Stacy. I was an extremely loyal customer of hers for over 3 years. as time passed, she became more and more "comfortable" and I started to feel she was taking advantage of my loyalty. she would make me wait "for 5 minutes" as she worked on other customers. I didn't mind it every once in a while, but then it turned into every time I was there. I would make an appointment but every time I showed up, I'd have at least a 15 minute wait while she worked on someone else. not only would she make me wait, once she started, she was obviously rushing to finish and the quality of her work quickly turned to crap. if she didn't have anyone else to work on after me, she would take so long and I would end up there for at least 2 hours for a pedicure and gel manicure which is absurd. I wouldn't mind as much but the quality was still very poor because she would waste time talking to Vivian at the station next to her. now onto the quality of her work...I used to ask her to do my waxing. my eyebrows were left shaped differently and with different thickness. and my lip would be burned by the wax. she also didn't know how to file my nails. some would be square. some would have rounded edges. others would be round. it got to the point where she gave me the bail file and I ended up filing them myself... now, I stopped going to her years ago. my mother continued because she didn't seem to have these issues...until today. my mother called me this morning to tell me that she had an appointment at 10a. she arrived before 10 and started with her waxing. Stacy asked her to stay in the waxing room "for 5 minutes" and when my mother walked out over 15 minutes later, she saw Stacy was at her station doing SOMEONE ELSE'S MANICURE. when my mom asked what she was doing, Stacy responded with "if you are going to give me a hard time, you can just leave." what is the purpose of making an appointment if you do not even honor it? and to treat a loyal customer like that is so disrespectful and unprofessional which Stacy has proven time and time again that she is. I wanted to text Stacy and tell her to never speak to my mother like that again but my mother reminded me that someone like that just is not worth it - she is beneath me. I really wanted to like this place since I live right next door. Walking in, this seems like the kind of place where they have their regulars, and god help you if you're not one of them. I gave this place three tries before finally giving up; all three times for a pedicure and because I was too lazy to drive somewhere else--learn from my mistakes. The first time was adequate--nothing special, but I was happy enough, and willing to return. They accept credit cards, but really pressured me to Venmo them for my service (I happened to have my phone out as I was settling up), which.. I wasn't fond of. Fine. Whatever. My second visit was largely the same; adequate service, though, I do have acrylic on my nails (I'm picky about acrylics), and get them done by my office, usually on a lunch break (which is why I was looking for someplace closer to home for a pedi). I kept getting comments from the lady, essentially interrogating me re: where I got them done, saying oh she "just liked them" is all. Weird. My third and final visit, I had the same tech and kept getting the same bizarre interrogation, but mind you, I speak Vietnamese (which, they know--my name is on my credit card, and they'd acknowledged it before); idk if they didn't believe me or something, but in the middle of my pedicure, my tech started going on and on to her friend (in Vietnamese) about how my acrylics were "so long" and "where must I be getting them done that they look like that". Omg!! I was so taken aback I just stared at her, mouth open (they're not even long!!--she acted like I was auditioning for Claws or something!). She then looked at me and said (in English) "oh, I'm just telling her how much I like your nails". I literally looked at her and was like "no you weren't" (met with silence). I was essentially ignored for the rest of my appointment and had to flag someone down (took like ten min) just to be able to GTFO of there. They had the nerve to say "see you next time". First, this was the WORST customer service provided by an attendant named Vivian in my entire adult life. I live in NY and visited my parents here and was unfortunate enough to book an appointment with Vivian. I went for the appointment on time and it was for a man, ped & facial package... A weird thing happened halfway through my manicure...Two ladies came in and Vivian knew them by name...and Vivian told me "you need to come back later, I have another appointment now"!!! Really???? My appointment was at 2:00 pm and Vivian asked me to come back at 7:30 pm AGAIN because she has other customers to attend to... What kind of prejudiced treatment was that??? By looking at their other reviews, I can see that I wasn't the only one getting this prejudiced treatment from Vivian. I will NEVER ever go there. I will NEVER let my mom go there ever again. I have been seeing Vivian for a manicure for 2.5 years. I usually get acrylics and do a red Opi polish but last month I asked for a shiny gold overlay in celebration of fall and those are the photos I am sharing. Vivian does a beautiful job filing and shaping my acrylic nails so that they look natural and work-appropriate every time! She's also funny as hell and kind. The price is fair and Nail Avenue uses quality products. I KNOW because my polish lasts for three weeks without fail. Nursing my broken nail, I went to the nail salon close to my apartment - the one that I told you I was undecided about before, because while the pedicure was fine, I felt that the $28 price felt a bit sly as it induced me to pay a $6 tip rather than a $5 tip without feeling fully comfortable about it. I felt now was a good time to give the place a second chance, as I'm not sure I would have gone there again if it hadn't been an emergency. The lady assigned to me, Kim, stood impatiently as I tried to choose a nail color, so I asked if she had any suggestions for a shade of pink that was light and summery. She actually closed her eyes in the manner that mothers do when they're thoroughly annoyed with their children, and shook her head at me. This intimidated me quite a bit, and I ended up grabbing the first shade of pink that caught my eye. As she's fixing my broken nail, every time something goes slightly wrong (like an apparatus that she was trying to apply on my hand not staying in place or her not being able to find a utensil she's looking for) I can feel her getting increasingly aggravated, and I'm sitting here haunched over and nervous like a child getting punished. Admittedly, I couldn't help glancing over in envy at the other patrons who were leisurely chatting and laughing away with their nail designers. Kim did a test-application of the color I had picked and asked if I wanted to change it. When I told her I did, SHE DID THE EYE-CLOSE THING ON ME AGAIN. It's my fault for letting that throw me off and selecting perhaps the ugliest color on the rack, which I did not DARE switch out again. After she was done applying the color, she mutely took my bag and walked over to the drying station with me shuffling behind her, with not so much as a "follow me" or "come this way." Sitting at the drying station felt more like doing a time-out in the corner, and I spent the time trying to figure out if I had done something wrong, before putting my experience off simply as bad service. But the longer I stared at the unevenly applied sewer-green color on my fingernails, and the exposed edges of the top-coat near the base of my nail where she had failed to cover the underlying nail polish, the angrier and more uncomfortable I got. I ended up just getting up and leaving before my nail fully dried, just to extract myself from the situation. I figured if I got it chipped or scratched, I could do a better replacement job myself anyway. This was the most clinical, unpleasant nail salon experience I've ever had. I don't know if she was having a bad day (or if, as my friend suggested, "maybe you reminded her of the girl her boyfriend ran off with"), but at least I've solidified my position on the place and I won't be going back. This might just be my new favorite nail place on Connecticut - and I've tried a bunch - for two reasons: 1) They were willing to take me in when I walked in a minute or two past the posted closing time (8pm on Friday). The service didn't feel rushed at all, either. [Though I once tried to stop in about half an hour before closing on a Sunday, and they were already booked...so beware of trying to squeeze in on the weekend.] 2) Paulina, who did my manicure, was absolutely fantastic. She gave me quite possibly the best finish of any manicure I've ever had: polish all the way to the sides (a particular pet peeve of mine) and not a tiny bubble in sight. She didn't complain about my super-short nails. And she used OPI Bond Aid as a pre-base coat, which I assume might be responsible for the great, lasting finish - I've never had it applied by another salon, but whatever they're doing here seems to work. To echo others' cautions: the credit card minimum is $20 (so more than just a manicure is required), and tips have to be in cash. I'll definitely be back, and I'll add a pedicure next time. read more

After having experienced other, more expensive salons, I have to say this place still gets the job done and for half the price. No, you're not getting tropical scented lotions, paraffin treatments, or mimosas but depending on who you get to do your nails, you'll leave with pampered feet and neat looking nails. The crowd here is generally older (this is your grandma's nail salon) but the OPI selection stays current and up to date. Their music selection is also very current and up to date without being obnoxiously loud. They do gel, acrylic, and a few other things but I usually get gel so I can only speak to that---the polish stays on and unchipped until I have them remove it. They have a ton of options and will attempt to do designs although it's not really their forte. The salon is an older set up but clean. They use pedi liners which I have never seen anywhere in DC. They're basically like giant shower caps that line the basin of the pedicure stations for easy and sanitary clean up. Without the use of these liners you're supposed to have the station soak for up to 10 min in between customers to properly sanitize the basin. I did not know that and have never seen a shop do that ... Which is a little concerning but I digress. This place has them now so, hooray! Also this place is conveniently located near red line Van Ness metro; about a 7-10 minute walk. I live in the neighborhood so I usually stop by after work. All around, I'm usually satisfied with the service and their leg massages are to die for. read more

I've found myself visiting Nail Avenue a lot lately. It's conveniently located for me, and the people there are a blast to be around. Of course, sometimes I miss the nail salon I go to in Adams Morgan because it's so pretty and posh and has drinks...however, my nails are always amazing when I leave Nail Avenue and I think it's worth the trade-off sometimes. The nail techs here listen to what you ask for and give you exactly that. They also recommend great colors. They don't use cheap polishes and they're speedy, but meticulous at the same time. I had my nails dipped for the first time on May 4 and I thought they looked very good. I didn't realize that the addressing cuticles and hangnails were not part of the $50-plus-tip service. I was charged more for asking her to clean up around the nail. I was told if I had any problem with the nails to just come back, they would fix it. Within two weeks the entire nail on both index fingers had lost all color and varnish. I called and was told I could come in anytime the next morning. When I arrived, the salon was full of customers waiting. After finally getting someone's attention, I was told to come back at 2:30 PM. When I returned at 2:30, not one salon worker looked up. I could not get anyone's attention, nor would anyone who worked there say anything in English! The other customers and I chatted about how odd it was that no one greeted them or told them when they would be taken, despite all of them having appointments. This seems a very unusual way of running a business. I could also point out that during the time they were working on my nails ( the first and only time I was there for service!), the women spent the entire time calling back-and-forth to each other across the room, across customers, in another language. When I had a question about some thing, I had to ask it several times and at increasing volume in order to be acknowledged. Overall, not a satisfying, nor relaxing, nor professional experience. I can't explain how much I love this place, especially Stacy! Stacy is awesome. She clearly cares about the clients and always does an immaculate job with my gel manicures, pedicures, and waxing. She is the sweetest and goes the extra mile for her clients. I got my nails done the day before I left for vacation and left my credit card at the salon! Because I was so busy getting ready for the vacation I couldn't pick up my card, Stacy drove out of her way and dropped off my card that night! How sweet is that?!?! My feet have always been dry. So dry, in fact, that I could probably step on a sharp object and feel nothing. Enter pedicures: my new religion. Nail Avenue was supposed to be my place of worship, especially since it is so close to my apartment that I could run there in flip flops during the winter, but it was not meant to be. In the beginning it was great. The pedicures were cheap, and I could bury myself in articles about "The Best Ways to Satisfy Your Man" without having to make small-talk with the technicians. And then something changed... First, they got massage chairs. Not the massage chairs that you try out at Sharper Image for longer than socially acceptable because you know you can't afford them. These massage chairs are more distracting than relaxing, and sometimes a little painful. They also stopped using the scraper. You know, the blade that takes off dead skin, leaving your heels extra smooth? Instead they use a fancy pumice, which just doesn't have the same effect, and also something I could buy at CVS. The last straw was when I looked down during one of my visits to see my toenails being painted an orange-red color rather than the deep red I had chosen. This wasn't a color I could shrug off and live with for two weeks. It was a color that I have only seen worn by my grandmother's friends in West Palm Beach (it matches their sweatshirts with puffy painted palm trees). When I told the woman painting my nails, instead of apologizing, she yelled at me for not notifying her sooner. I've been here more than a few times as part of my ongoing quest to stop biting my fingernails. I have failed, of course, but Nail Avenue is always there for me when I feel inspired to try again. The service here is prompt -- they want to do your nails and they want to do them quick. The man who serves as sort of a "host" stands guard at the front and he is all business. That's not to say he's unpleasant though -- he's always eager to give me change for my $20 bill so I can tip his workers. In typical nail salon fashion, the tables line a wall with bizarre framed photos hung on it. The interior is pretty bare bones, but the people-watching is good at the table where you wait for your nails to dry. And never fear, they do pedicures here too. This place is alright if you're in a hurry. I visited on a whim, and got a regular mani pedi. When I said I only wanted a regular manicure, the lady said "that won't look as nice as gel." The manicure only lasted a few days. The pedicure chipped as I was walking out the door. When I returned seconds later to get it fixed, the lady laughed at me and yelled for someone else to fix her mistake. I live practically right next door to this place but I've always taken a pass because it looked a little sketchy from the outside. I'm glad I finally went in. I had a mani/pedi with Lisa. She was fast and efficient but did an amazing job. She was obviously a perfectionist and I am too so it was a good fit. I have no complaints about the service other than that they put paper towel between your toes for the pedi rather than a real toe separator. In addition they didn't offer to use a razor on my feet which was different than other places I've been to. They have massage chairs for the pedi but make you go sit at a table for the mani which is also different than some places I've been to- I prefer when they let you stay in the massage chair for the mani. However, it is overall results that really matter to me and they were A++ I also got a brazillian with Cindy. I was really hesitant about the brazillian because I typically hesitate to get them done at 'lower end' places. However, this was quite possibly the most pain free AND the most thorough brazillian I've ever had. I did notice she kept re-dipping the same stick, so for those who really dislike that/think it is a bad thing, you should know that is the case. However, it doesn't bother me and for $45 this is a fantastic deal for DC regardless. I'll probably be back for a mani next week and another mani/pedi and brazillian in about a month. Lisa was my gal and she was excellent-very precise, and gave me a paint job that is still going strong over a week later! One of my favorite parts was the message chairs-they have spa joy chairs there which I love. No square thick french manicure Frito looking nails for me! Growing up, my mother's best friend had long nails & I thought she was the most glamorous lady ever. Now that I am a grownup lady (hahahahaha), I wear my nails long. They aren't cheap and they are time consuming, but I love them. Nail Avenue, thankfully conveniently located, does a great job keeping up with my acrylic habit. They are very meticulous, only stock OPI and Essie, busy (that's always a good sign), but not so busy you can't just walk in on a weekday (I never go on Saturdays) and are friendly. This isn't a spa - it's a nail salon. So it's not fancy, but it is clean. 5 stars seem like a lot, but I can wait a full 2 1/2 weeks between fills with no breaks. If you're an acrylic junkie like me, that means a lot. They make sure those fuckers are ON. Which is helpful when scratching a pimp's eyes out. read more

I didn't come to Nail Avenue to do my nails - I came here to get a quick bikini wax before I left for vacation. Why would I get a wax at a place called Nail Avenue? Well, they provide waxing services, and they are relatively inexpensive. Plus I lived right down the street, and the convenience couldn't be beat. I really should have gone out of my way to go somewhere better. The waxing rooms were tiny and made me slightly claustrophobic. The woman who did my bikini wax was quick, quick, quick but did not really care much about the pain issue and I ended up bleeding in a few places. Overall, it was a pretty awful experience, although I will admit that the finished product was neat and complete. I guess you get what you pay for, at $25 you can't expect too much. I moved into DC about 7 months ago and I was desperate to find a salon that could wax eyebrows with sufficient skill. I stopped by Nail Avenue based on past reviews and was not disappointed. The women here are efficient and friendly, and $10 a wax before tip is a great price for the quality. Also, their customer service is top notch. Yesterday I was in a major bind and was frantically hoping I could catch the salon before it closed at 7pm on Saturday. I couldn't, so I attempted another salon down the street that said they were open till 7:30 when I called. I go there and the front door is locked (though the sign said 'Open') and all of my calls went unanswered. It was around 7:15 when I called Nail Avenue, who did pick up and said they were closed, but told me to come in when I said I just needed a quick wax. I got there ASAP, and walked out 10 minutes later with perfect arches. This place earns every tip they receive, and I am incredibly thankful they are so close and accommodating! After a client recommended this place, I've been going here for years. And even though I now live across town I still make my way there. The service is good and their prices are reasonable. I never have to wait and I appreciate that. I have had a couple of visits that made me question what I was feeling or picking up energetically. It's like a nail salon meat house with everyone on top of everyone so I don't like this particular aspect about it. I am highly sensitive so I'll pick up on others vibrations when I have forgotten to protect myself. I have to remember to remain detached when I go there as a result. Normally I am warm, friendly and interactive by nature. Anyway, I still go there because they are thorough, but I've never developed a relationship with any of the women although I still recognize them after such long intervals of getting a mani & pedi, but they have yet to acknowledge or remember me. They are cash driven more than customer relation driven and perhaps that should be equal. They usually 'kiss up' to the housewives type of the upper NW DC area. One day I went there and at least 3 local anchor women where present. I liked that because I am a former local broadcast journalist myself and was excited about running into my colleagues in the field. It was a journalist party that day!! So I kinda like this place, perhaps it's because its conveniently located and is like a rock steady alternative place for me when I don't feel like giving myself a hand and feet treat! read more

This was my 2nd time here and I think the people are very friendly and attentive. I got an acrylic fill and she made sure I was happy with the shape before she started painting them. My friend got a gel manicure and was very happy. My only complain t was the price. I am from Boston so maybe that is why, but friends gel manicure was $35 and my acrylic fill plus gel French was $50. Ok so, I went in for a gel manicure with a full set of acrylics. I was seen pretty promptly and it was overall a good experience. I had to take one star because when I was asking questions about the length and process, because I rarely ever get gel manicures (it's probably my 2nd time ever), the nail tech was getting slightly irritated but whatever, I let it slide. The other reason I'm deducting a star is because when she finished my nails, even though they looked good, she left a little bit too much of my natural nail showing at the bottom, so it actually looked like I had a little bit of nail growth already, almost like I had them for a week already. So I knew at that point, that they weren't going to last the full 3-4 weeks that I had hoped they would. Finally, yesterday one of the acrylics popped off, so I really have to go in somewhere to get them taken off. All in all, seems like a alright place to get your nails done, and I probably will go back to give it another try. read more
