If I could rate this place zero stars I would. I have visited this salon a 3 times before, but my most recent visit is what concerns me most. I came in on an non busy afternoon for a fill. There was literally one other customer. No one wanted to do my nails. I asked for basic design with white stripes and the nail tech who did come forward stated she did not do designs and then began to speak to another tech to do my nails. There were 5 available techs going back and forth about the design and no one wanted to do it. I understand that every tech has different skills but their customer service was poor and beyond the design when I entered the salon there wasn't initiative to take me as a customer. They made me wait several minutes even after I stated what I wanted. The other times I been here I've never seen Black women customers so maybe they are only used to a certain demographic. It's just really unfortunate to me that every customer is not treated with the same level of care. I've attached a picture of the design I asked for as well. I left as they continued to go back and forth about the design and won't be a patron here again. read more

I went to Tenley nails last week for the first time and was looking forward to it based on the reviews. When I walked in I was greeted and told to sit in a chair while the woman doing my nails brought me different gel manicure options. As I was looking through the options she started to work on my nails so by the time that I was done picking a color, my old nail polish was removed and she was working on cutting my nails and cuticles. While it was great for efficiency purposes, I definitely felt a little bit rushed even though the salon wasn't that busy. The gel manicure itself was great and it looked really nice, but as I left and looked closer, I could see she didn't clear up the sides of my nails very well and there was red stain from the polish. I was able to get it off over the course of the night. What I'm most disappointed in is that by the next morning, I already had a small chip in the polish, and in the week since I have a few more. They do state on their website that they will fix any chipped gel (or dipped) nail(s) within 2 weeks (14 days) from initial service, but I won't be back in the area in time to take them up on that offer. A big pro of the salon is they have TONS and TONS of colors to choose from. read more

I'm only halfway through a pedi and am SO impressed! I had to start this review right away. First, everyone is so warm and welcoming. Second, the massage with hot stone is one of the best I've ever had. My pedicurist is so gentle and careful. What a pleasant experience! I've been to Tenley Nails a total of three times. I have mixed feelings about this place and hopefully I am able to articulate why. The first time I came in for a pedicure. I cannot remember who did my pedicure. I want to say her name is Alice, but that is probably wrong lol. I just know she had long hair and wore glasses. She was attentive to my feet and her massage was EVERYTHINNNGGG. Downside? My toenails were cut extremely short and some nails were crooked/slanted. Very disappointing. The second time I came in for SNS manicure. Let me tell you, they have quite the extensive selection of dipping powders! You may feel overwhelmed with the endless color options, but I was in heaven. And they only charge $40 for SNS so that felt like a steal (I usually pay $55). Betty was my technician and she did an impeccable job. I was in love with my nude color and my nails looked flawless. I have no complaints about this experience. It lasted a little over two weeks and they have a 14-day no chip guarantee... If you have your receipt, you can come back and get your nail fixed if it chips :). The third time, I went back for a SNS manicure and I had Betty again. She did a good job cleaning my nails but there was an issue with my ring finger's nail and she kept going back and forth with Tina in their native language about it. Not once, did she say anything to me. Basically, the nail coating for whatever reason was not shiny and appeared smeared on that nail. She applied an additional coating, but it did not change anything. She did not personally say anything to me about it, but I just kept watching Betty and Tina as they went back and forth about the nail not being right. Talk about terrible customer service. Something should have been said or offered to me (i.e. you can come back and we can fix it). But nope, nothing was said. Again, very disappointing. I think this place is hit or miss. Not sure if I will come back after my last experience because I really did not like how they did not speak to me about an issue with MY nail... read more

I have been a customer of Tenley Nails for years. A few years ago, Nam took over the store and her care for her customers is amazing. Everyone who works at Tenley Nails is dedicated, proud of their work, welcoming, and efficient. Betty, Tina, Amy, Nam and her sister are all wonderful. I feel like family when i go in. The one time I had an issue with a set of nails, I was welcomed back the next day to fully re-do it. Making me happy was the most important thing. Not that much ever goes wrong, but when I wasn't 100% satisfied with something, fixing it and making sure that I felt comfortable coming to them was their main worry. The prices are great, talent and know-how are high, customer service is top notch, availability is amazing, and I love having a regular salon to go to. My recommendation is to make Tenley Nails your regular nail salon too. (They also do waxing, pedicures, hot stone massage and share cat photos!) read more

Don't get a pedicure unless you want your nails literally hacked in half. I wanted to cry. I cancelled the manicure I was supposed to have from the way my nail request were ignored . My toenails were cut below the line even when I asked for them to be filed down. The pedicure itself was decent, I still had some callouses on my feet but was still decent. I don't think I would come back as it'll take at least a month for my nails to grow back out smh. read more

I have been going here for years. Tina does an amazing job with nails and waxing (it is her work pictured). My SNS manicures from Tina often last a whole month. Amie is the best at the pedicures. However, all the ladies (Tina, Nam, Betty & Amie, etc.) are good at either a manicure or pedicure. They have discounts for students. However, their full-service rates are good too and I think their services are worth it! Tina is the former owner and Nam is the current owner, so its a nail technician own business, and not a stretchy place like described in the NYT article. I have also witnessed Nam help girls out who got poor work done in other nail places, so they're very good at solving any nail/foot issue. I highly recommend this place! I do recommend calling ahead for an appointment because they do get very busy, its because they're good and customers keep coming back to them. read more

First off, very warm welcoming and straight to the point (no wait). I asked her to do my feet and the water was warm and it was comfortable. However, I didn't really like the way she cut my nails. I went to Tenley this past weekend and I was very pleased with how my Dip Manicure and Gel Pedicure turned out! I have received compliments on my nails several times since. The parking situation is a bit confusing, but I did manage to find street parking, which was fine. The salon is nice enough. I did have to request a fresh set of clean utensils, but she obliged with no problem. I like to relax in the salon, but I did not feel the salon was very relaxing, mainly due to the fact that they allow patrons to hold phone conversations on speaker and talk loudly in the salon. At first, I thought it was just one call, but then the woman next to me proceeded to take and make several more calls ( all on speaker) and no one asked her to stop! Tenley nails is absolutely, hands down, the BEST nail salon in the DMV. I was struggling to find my new nail place after moving to DC from NY but after finally discovering Tenley nails I have never looked back. The quality and service is unmatched. My nails break so easily and gel at other salons was peeling off after less than 5 days but the ladies of Tenley are so meticulous that it ALWAYS lasts over 2 weeks (something I never thought possible for me). All of the ladies are so welcoming and accommodating, even to my last minute panic appointment requests. Betty and Amy are particularly spectacular. After having my nails done yesterday I managed to scrape my toe in the pool and took a chunk of my polish off so I popped in this morning and they graciously fixed it immediately. I had to go here because my usual girl for SNS at DC nail spa was booked. I've been growing out my nails for almost a year with SNS. Tenley Nails completely wrecked what I've worked so hard to grow. After a week, 2 of them broke horizontally in the middle of my nail. They both hurt like a bitch. They're lumpy, they cut 2 of my cuticles with the buffer (I was bleeding and the tech didn't even notice), and the tech couldn't even shape them right. I told her 3 times that I wanted sharp coffin, as they always have been. She barely needed to cut anything, just file the top until the edges were sharp. She couldn't even do that. Just had the best ever manicure here! Betty was incredible. I have short, weirdly lumpy nails, which she smoothed out and made look amazing. She's very methodical and clean and will really fix your nails up. Also, the price was amazing -- $27 for gel with a student discount, $30 without the student discount. So I pass by this little shop all the time (apparently I learned they've been open for 13yrs now), since it's really close to where I work... finally I decided to go in, figured hey I need my nails done anyways so why not see what they are like. First impression: They were SO courteous and very accommodating. They normally take appointments but they also welcome walk-ins (which is a must for me, cause I am so busy so I need to do it when I can squeeze that time in)! After I was welcomed in (by the new owner) and let them know what service I'd like, as I was walked to the station where I was going to get my service, they offered me a cup of tea, coffee or some water. This was a service I've only experienced from full service SPAs, so the fact that a normal around the way nail shop is doing this is so awesome! It really makes you feel appreciated as a customer. Amy was the tech who worked with me and I am definitely gonna keep her number in my phone; skill-set is amazing & the plus was she dealt/handled me like I was VIP. Oh and the final product (my nails) are beautiful (see pix posted)!! S/N: Don't take these bad reviews as your final decision, the shop is now under new management so they are making changes! I was visiting the area and was in need of some serious work to be done to my nails. My toes weren't that bad but I needed my 9 acrylic nails taken off (because one fell off) and a new set put on and a pedicure. I always get gel everything so I informed them. First of all she tries to yank off my nails even after I told her to be careful. After she ripped my pinky nail up to the flesh under my nail she said "ok, I soak them." She proceeded to my pedicure which she did not use gloves at first.. kind of weird but that's all on her. They have these little pre-packaged pedicure kits that make it look like they use fresh scrubbers but it's questionable because they picked the one they use for me out of the drawer and put it back in there too. I paid nearly 40$ for a gel pedicure they ended up looking horrible and chipping off a couple days after. I don't have a hard job, I'm a stay at home mom. My experience sucked. read more

I was hoping this would be my new found manicure place but I wasn't happy with manicure. I was promised a good experience which I didn't get by the own I didn't my nails some on the edges were not filed smoothly on some fingers. Some were sharp. You said your sister- cousin would do them( I understand she is still learning so it's fine). Got half the manicure service and was still made to a full price. Their mom did well work the pedicure. Some advise next time you injury a person's finger. Please stop and first rinse the person's hand in water. That would be a safe practice. Thank you read more

I really am not one to complain about nail services, but I traveled across dc to come to tenley nails since it was highly recommended to me. I noticed the salon was a little messy but it didn't bother me because it was a small place. I was the only one in there, and they took me right away. I am giving two stars because the woman who appeared to be the manager was super sweet and thanked me a million times for coming in. However, I am really displeased with my gel manicure. It took around an hour and a half, which was a little longer than I was anticipating, and it was done really sloppily. There is a lot of excess polish around my nails, and the texture is really bumpy. My nails are also all different shapes and lengths. Lastly, my nail tech did not put any lotion or oil on my hands until the gel was done, but she left globs of it up and down my arms. I know that Tenley has a 2 week perfection policy, but I didn't really have the time to sit there again just for it to be redone by the same tech. I'm going to try to make some time this weekend to get it fixed. This place is really only slightly cheaper than other salons in DC, so I would say it's definitely not worth the trip. read more

It's close my apartment and on my way home from work so I was hoping for the best. Cheap prices - yes! However, the service was really odd. My girl started off super friendly but then seemed pissed that I only selected the baseline sevices (Sorry, honey! Rent is expensive!) The mani and pedi were alright. The polish at least looked good. She seemed to rush through everything and she kept ordering me to lift my leg, relax, etc. It was just uncomfortable. I get mani/pedis all the time and have never experienced this so I know it's not just me. She then started to tell me about her bf issues. Not interested! The second she was finished with my mani she grabbed all her stuff and ran out the door. I think I'll try Envy Nails next time. read more
