Dr. Weikum has a phenomenal bedside manner. I was very concerned with what I perceived as rapid deterioration in one eye - I was actually seeing him for a second opinion. He spent plenty of time explaining things the first doctor had not. He did a battery of tests which the first doctor had not done. I've used Dr. Weikum since 2004 at his Dallas location and I have never had a complaint about him or his staff. He is very personable and very thorough with his exam. Dr. Weikum is one of the best eye doctors I have ever had the pleasure of seeing (no pun intended). He does way more than act friendly and tell you your new prescription. Under his care my eyes have improved dramatically. He has given me careful instructions as to how to care for my eyes, discussed with me how specific things I do, eat, or drink affect my vision, diagnosed long term issues for which we can prepare now, and explained to me carefully all of my options. I have had many good ODs over my lifetime, but he is by far the best. Be prepared, however, to pay for the best. Purchasing a new set of lenses - not including frames, mind you - and contacts through his office run me approximately $1,000 a year. That's in addition to the consultation. Caveat aside, I have nothing negative to say about the service and skill of Dr. Weikum. You will not be unhappy with your decision to place your eyes in his capable hands. read more

I had been going to First Eye Care on 635 for the last few years, but after starting a job downtown, this location was an obvious choice. How lucky for me that simple convenience brought me to this excellent doctor! He immediately made me feel at ease (new docs always make me nervous). Like others have said, he had a genuine interest in helping improve my vision. He also gave some great advice about a program I can use to adjust my monitors to a warmer temperature. However, as others have cautioned, this was not a cheap visit. I have medical insurance, but no vision. For my new glasses (frames, lenses, and anti glare coating) I paid over $600. ($696 by the time I paid the $60 copay +$15 for the visual fields threshold test. Price aside, this has by far been my best experience with an optometrist! read more

Great experience! Like mechanics, a lot of medical visits leave the customer confused about what they were told, uncertain what their actual problem is, and wondering what they paid for. This, however, was the exact opposite. Dr. Weikum is so knowledgeable and friendly that he had no problem diagnosing/explaining an issue I had been having with my eyes due to lasik surgery in my past. I left feeling confident about the cause and what to do moving forward. My only regret was that I hadn't been to such an adept optometrist before getting lasik who could have helped me avoid these issues. read more

Helpful R.'s review is dead on. Dr. Weikum is an "In Network" doctor in my vision plan, meaning the exam was free and single vision glasses should cost only $20 for the copay. However, my bill was $308 AND I provided the frames. Without asking if I wanted it, they charged me $168 for Trivex lenses and $125 for anti-reflective coating. They also charged me $15 for a test without telling me it wasn't covered by my vision plan (this charge is not a big deal to me but it might be to someone else). His front office staff is not only rude but also disingenuous. When I called to make the appointment, I ask if Dr. Weikum prescribed Latisse and was told yes. I also checked the box on the intake form that I was interested in Latisse but forgot to discuss it before I left. The next day I received a call from the young lady who processed my bill telling me she'd forgotten to return my credit card. I told her I'd come pick up the card and asked if I could also pick up the prescription for Latisse. She said yes but when I arrived at their office, she told me the doctor had to go to his other office and didn't sign the prescription before he left. I told her I'd picked up the prescription when I returned to pick up my glasses. When I called to follow up, I was told that I couldn't get the prescription unless I had another "medical" eye exam. Dr. Weikum may be a good doctor but, under the circumstances, I think I can find a good doctor who doesn't rip off their patients and has a more competent and friendly front office staff. I cannot recommend him. read more

I would not recommend this office under any circumstances. I was charged over $250 over three visits, merely to update my prescription (this does not include the purchase of any contact lenses or glasses). I called the office for a new prescription, and was told it would only cost the amount of my copay, which is $35. I was then charged $180 on my first visit, and told that it was a required "cornea evaluation" for the state of Texas, though this was not mentioned over the phone. I paid it, but was required to come back the next week because I was told that my cornea needed to heal before he could give me a prescription. I came back, and was required to pay another $35 copay. My vision was tested and I was given a pair of contacts to try. I told Dr. Weikum I would not be buying my contacts from him, and he said that he understood, and that this was just to test my vision with the contacts. The contacts were horrible - I could not see at night, and could not read my computer when it was less than three feet away. I called the office, and they said it was not the prescription, but the contact, and that I needed to get another pair. I got another pair; again they did not work. In the meantime, I received a bill for $38 at my home for a "contact fitting," though Dr. Weikum had specifically told me I would not be charged for this. I called the office and demanded an appointment so that I could get the correct prescription. I had to argue with the front desk to even get me in, and argue further in order to get a detailed receipt of the $180 so that I could submit it to my flexible spending plan (when I finally did receive the receipt, there was no mention of a cornea evaluation, only a $180 charge for a "contact eval"). I finally went in, and this time brought in my old contacts, which were better than the two Dr. Weikum had prescribed. I was told that it was my fault for not bringing them in sooner, and that I could not expect him to give me a good pair of contacts without knowing what I was wearing first. He told me my vision was 20/40 with my current contacts, and gave me a prescription for the SAME contacts with a slightly different strength (.25 higher in each eye). I was then told that I MUST pay the $38 since he had fitted me for contacts, even though neither of his contacts had worked. The office was rude, and I was charged over $250 over the course of three visits to get a slightly different prescription in the same contact lens. I will never return to Dr. Weikum's office, and I would certainly not recommend his office to others. read more

I had a problem with my right eye. I called Dr. Weikum's office to see if he could take a look at it for me. They offered to work me in if I could come to his office and wait but unfortunately that couldn't work for me. I asked if they had someone cancel if they would call me and I would come over (only a block from where I work). Sure enough they called about 30 minutes later and I ran over as fast as I could. He took all the time he needed to make an accurate diagnosis (as always). Dr. Weikum and his staff are knowledgable, friendly and a pleasure to deal with. I've used Dr. Weikum for many years but not any more. Its sad that the people who run his office are losing him patients. On my last visit they didn't give me credit for my insurance. When I asked for an itemized bill "the printer was broken" but they promised to e-mail it to me. Never happened. Then when my contacts were unwearable and I had to go back to get that corrected I had to pay another co-pay for something that was Dr. Weikum's fault. I decided to give them another chance because I'd never had a problem before but yesterday I had an appointment that I'd made 6 months ago and they called at the last minute to cancel because the Dr. was running late. I explained that this was a very important appointment for me because 6 months ago he had told me I have macular degeneration and I've been on pins and needles ever since worrying that I'm going to go blind but the woman's response was "Its just a six month follow up. You'll just have to reschedule." Well, I'm done. I've made an appointment with an opthamologist. I told Dr. Weikum's office I'd be there at noon today to pick up my file and guess what! I got there and they said my file is at the Irving office and they don't know when it will be back downtown. I've never been to the Irving office in all the years I've been going there. I think they've lost my records and that's why my appointment was cancelled. Good luck if you decide to use him. I'll never be back. read more
