Ok this sounds silly but I thought this place was a weight loss center for years because of their name. I finally decided to try it to get that idea out of my head. This is my favorite restaurant week lunch restaurant that I visited this year. The service was very nice. The food was amazing with full size portions (not cutting back/sample sizes like other restaurants), and the doughknot dessert was so warm, fresh and delicious. I love their little bakery at the front of the restaurant. The salmon, which I requested medium rare, was cooked perfectly. Definitely on my list to come back for brunch! read more

Note: This review is about the coffee shop attached to the restaurant. I was in the area and was looking for a new coffee shop to try, and Weights + Measures popped up as a suggested new spot to try. With such an esoteric name for a coffee shop I was intrigued and pretty excited to try this spot out. The parking situation outside is quite confusing - the signs designate certain hours are for Weights + Measures parking, but they end at 11am. I asked the barista about this as soon as I walked in, and she assured me that my parking was fine. But that alone pretty good measure of how strange this coffee shop was. Unfortunately this spot just does not have oat milk (which I thought was standard across coffee shops these days), so I opted for an almond milk latte. It was super watery (milky) and was quite frankly, gross. If I had to compare this coffee to somewhere else, it was something like a Dunkin' Donuts latte. To add to this entire experience, I brought some work to do in the space, and was told I could sit within the restaurant seating area since there was no seating within the coffee shop area. Nice of them to do, but little did I know that there were no outlets, and it was pretty awkward trying to work with restaurant customers coming in and ordering their lunches. My brunch experience here was amazing. Was it the screwdriver I ordered, which was 80% vodka, or the delicious fried chicken and cake donuts? I suspect a little of both. I came with a friend I had not seen in a while and service was on point- not too rushed and not slow at all, giving us lots of time to catch up and chat. The menu was a little pricey for Houston brunch but I feel as though what I ordered was well worth it. The cake donuts sandwiching the friend chicken were perfectly fluffy. Being able to choose spinach as a side made me feel less guilty about ordering donuts and fried chicken. Stopped in for HRW lunch today and it was just not good. It took forever for my appetizer to come out, (they just forgot about it), and then forever for my entrée (hanger steak which was very overcooked) and then I had to ask for my dessert, and was actually asked if I was ok with using the fork that I ate my steak with for the key lime torte as well. I really enjoyed dinner here, so I had to return to try their breakfast and bakery goods. I had a request for some bakery reviews, so that will be posted shortly. Breakfast at Weights + Measures is served Monday-Friday 7-11 AM. Josh and I managed to make it out here despite the rain and cold weather. We started off with the blueberry cheese danish per the recommendation of our waitress, Benita. She had a great sense of humor and was extremely helpful. She is applying to nursing school, so we obviously bonded over that. If you make it in for breakfast, ask for her! Pastries The blueberry cheese danish was a great way to start the meal because it wasn't too sweet, and I thought the blueberries were a great addition to help balance out the cheese. They have other varieties of danishes, so I'm sure you would be able to find something that will satisfy your sweet tooth. Before we left, I had to stop by the bakery case and decided on the pecan roll. I found it to be a little too rich for my liking, but I did love the mountain of pecans on top. The bakery offers breads and other pastries from the Slow Dough Bake Shop. Entrees Josh got the eggs with potatoes and toast, and I decided on the avocado toast egg sandwich. It was served like an open face sandwich and came with potatoes as well. Instead of slices of avocado, the ciabatta bread had a layer of delicious guacamole at the base. The layer of guacamole was then followed with hardwood smoked bacon, fried eggs, and green harissa. I should have asked for the green harissa on the side because it was pretty spicy. I found myself picking it off, but again, fair warning to those who have little to no tolerance for spice. Overall, I thought the dish was excellent. Living in Texas, I've had ketchup and salsa with my eggs, but never avocado. I just love the pairing of this fatty fruit with carbs (guac and tortillas of course). Decided to come here for brunch with a couple of my girlfriends to catch up! The restaurant is easy to find but the location is still in the gentrification stage. I really like that this place has a pretty good parking lot and there's plenty of spaces but you can tell the larger vehicles don't really like to park in the designated spots. The food isn't the largest portion for the price you pay, but it's a nice single serving. The taste test: Oaxaca Scramble: Not bad, but nothing special. when picking up the sandwich to eat, it felt very soft and flimsy. The croissant is delicious for the sandwich and I LOVE croissant sandwiches, but I wish the croissant had a bit more body to it to hold it together. Not much flavor in the eggs and there was no texture as a whole. It was just one big, soft bite that just mushed in my mouth. maybe bc i didn't get bacon that there was no crunch, but it needed something crispier (aka croissants). I tasted some of my friend's donut and chicken and it tasted great! The chicken was moist and crispy on the outside and the donut is cripsy and soft on the inside. I would have ordered this if I wasn't trying to watch what I was eating! The service wasn't bad, but I would say unattentive. I appreciate when servers come to check on the food with us shortly after being served. My friend was hoping to request a condiment with the potatoes and ended up having to wait until her meal was almost finished before our waiter checked in. Overall, it was OK/good. But overpriced. First time eating from Weights + Measures and we went big by ordering the Thanksgiving dinner (omnivore version) and a chocolate cardamom cake. The dinner was overall really satisfying. The stuffing was a little over salted but easy to balance out with the mashed potatoes. One star off for not warning us about the chocolate cardamom cake. It was on a baking rack when I picked it up (room temp). There is no description on their menu and I didn't receive any verbal or written heads up about the texture. I brought it out of the fridge on Thanksgiving and let it sit while I heated up dinner. By the time I put a fork in it, it was straight goo. My family wasn't sure if we needed to finish it off in the oven or what. We held off, had a different dessert & I called the next day (today) to ask about the texture. The person who answered said it should be dry, I told her what happened & then she switched & said it should be frozen & more like a pudding texture. My wife and I came here for brunch on her birthday. It's one of Houston's better brunch spots. It's got a pretty casual mid-century vibe. The ambiance is definetly on-point. Another big plus is that even though they are super busy, they take reservations so you won't have to wait if you call in advance. Their brunch menu has a good mix of sweet and savory options. We had their brioche French toast and chicken donut. It was pretty good. I wouldn't way it was anything exceptional, but definitely better than your run of the mill brunch spot. However, I think their prices are a little high for what they sell. Service was good, but it took them awhile to respond to our requests because they were super busy. In summary, Weights and Measures is a good brunch spot and I'd recommend going. There are a few things they could improve on, but overall it is one of the better brunch spots in Houston. read more

We went for brunch on a Saturday morning (around nine) and were very pleased with the restaurant, our food, and our coffee. I tried the house smoked salmon egg sandwich (with dill mascarpone, purple onion, truffle egg, and pumpernickel bread) - it was delicious! My boyfriend tried the Oaxaca scramble (bacon, redneck cheddar, croissant, and salsa) and loved that, too! The breakfast pizzas sound amazing (and the ones we saw when we there looked amazing, too) - I definitely want to try one of those next time! I had a flat white and he had a cappuccino. The coffee was very good! The building is very cool - very industrial light fixtures and exposed concrete beams. It's big and bright. They also have a bakery and coffee bar at the front of the restaurant entrance - so you can get a coffee or baked goods to go! They also have a bar with a separate entrance on the side. All in all, not the most amazing meal I've ever had, but a really good and very cool brunch spot! I have been a loyal patron of weights and measures ever since its opening under the direction of Chef Kaplan, who retired just in time for the pandemic, when Chef Rios took over. The pandemic and the accompanying supply chain problems and issues with lockdowns obviously required changes in ingredients and dishes in order to survive the lockdown, so the menu changes were understandable. Chef Rios kept many of the most popular dishes from the original Kaplan days and added new dishes that clearly showed his personality (for a while, you could absolutely tell what was an original menu item versus a new menu item, because the new menu item was of distinctly better quality and execution). One thing, however, that remained constant was the service. Both chefs Kaplan and Rios took time to get to know their customers, as did their staff. People who were regulars were rewarded for their loyalty through great service and great relationships. Now we have a new chef again (can't tell you his name or her name, because they haven't bothered to introduce themselves to their new customers), and a completely new staff (I believe there's only maybe two people left from chef Rios' staff). My, how the mighty have fallen. I have visited Weights and Measures several times since the latest change, and to quote Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series, the food is now "exceptionally ordinary". Nothing wrong with it, just nothing particularly outstanding about it either. My most recent visit I ordered the truffled egg and salmon on toast dish that has been on the menu since day one. This is a classic example. It used to be that they would actually freshly shaved real truffles into the egg, and the egg was perfectly fluffy nd moist. The pickled onion beautifully complemented the smoked salmon with a little bit of dill on top, served on rye bread atop a layer of ricotta cheese. This was a beautifully composed, and delicious dish. Now, what I got from what I got the last time I ordered that was so far from that. Regular cream cheese instead of ricotta, diced regular onion (a far cry from the lovely pickled onions whose acidity actually complemented the dish rather than just be harsh). Eggs were over cooked and drowned in truffle oil (which makes it greasy and overpowering) and bread under toasted. The bakery is no better in terms of the variety and volume of baked goods compared to before. As I said earlier, my how the mighty have fallen. Ditto with the service. No attempt to try to get to know you as a customer. It's really a shame, because this is a neighborhood restaurant, nestled in the middle of the residential portion of Midtown, and they're missing out on a real opportunity to gain a real crowd of regulars from the neighborhood that will keep their business driving. I'll continue to visit occasionally out of convenience, but at the moment given the quality of the food and the service, it is difficult for me to go out of my way to recommend weights to my friends, as I once enthusiastically did. read more

This place has one of the best happy hours. Not only do they have an amazing drink selection, they also have amazing food options. We were a little skeptical about the carrot pizza but order it anyway along with the margarita. Oh boy, the carrot pizza was out of this world amazing!!! I highly recommend it. For dessert we ordered the carrot cake. It wasn't as sweet as we would've liked but it was still good. I will be back again for sure! Also, our waitress, Kara?, was super sweet and extremely helpful! My fiance and I came here on Friday, March 29th early evening. We rarely get a night out on our own since we've had our child and looking forward to a night out. We got sat quickly and checked out the menus. We already decided on what appetizers and cocktails we wanted, but no one has come to check on us yet. I did notice a couple that were sat after us 2 tables down had a server go to them for their drink orders. My fiance and I just waited patiently for someone to come take our order. I felt like we shouldn't have to get the attention of the staff, they should have already acknowledged us by now. It was over 15 minutes since we've been seated. We didn't want to leave because we wanted to try out the cocktails and get pizza. I did feel irate when I saw the couple who sat after us get their drinks and appetizers before we even got to put in our order for anything (they were a white couple, don't think it matters but it's an observation). Not to mention the table right next to us got their check and paid it, and the server didn't seem to notice us. Around this time, I did get really annoyed and started looking around to see if anybody noticed us. My fiance just had it and wanted to leave, she was pretty hungry. So we left. On the way out, I did mention that no one came to us to take our order to the host and a blonde employee at the host station. They just awkwardly laughed and smiled, that's it. We came to try this restaurant for the first time expecting to be able to use our $25 gift card. Upon payi with our befit card and $25 gift card, we were told the gift card is no longer valid due to "a change in management". We reviewed the gift card and there were NO terms on the card and it said it was valid towards any food and drink purchase with no expiration date. We were still denied the use of the gift card and had to pay the full amount on our bill. How on earth can a company not accept a gift card with their company name on it and no exclusions or expiration date? Additionally, the food was average at best. Her demeanor and attitude was unbecoming of someone who is the first face you see at this establishment. There is no signage advising us that large parties are not able to be accommodated here. My husband and I have been waiting to come to this place for quite a while. The place is really nice. I love the spaciousness and the natural light from the windows and the chairs are beyond comfortable. We ordered from a very narrow and overly priced selection of brunch items. I had the chilaquiles and my husband ordered the avocado toast, and at the end of our meal, we wanted to try the pancake. The chilaquiles ($20) dish had a nice and original presentation, everything was yummy but the beef was under seasoned. I never ever ask for salt and this time I did. The waiter took a long time to bring just salt to the table. My husbands avocado toast look ok. Very simple. The eggs were over cooked and the little avocado was smeared (on the brown side) on the very yummy bread. Bacon was alright, not tasty at all The temperature on the pancake was not as expected. Since this restaurant was not packed as usual, I think they could have put more attention on the temperature of food and coffee. My coffee was super bitter. I really went with high expectations to this place. I will probably won't visit again because of our experience and because the prices don't match the quality of the food and service. read more

HL & I had such a wonderful breakfast here this morning! Christian our waiter was fantastic and gave us simply the "best" service!!! This is such a great way to start your day. I am known for never ordering food like it is listed on a menu. Today I customized my avocado toast my way with Christian's help. Our food order (my avocado toast my way), & HL's Cranberry Orange Granola were served to us fairly quickly and was prepared to our liking. Additionally, Christian checked on us to see if everything was fine, refilled our water glasses and was simply friendly and professional. He also commented on how much he liked that Weights & Measures makes everything from scratch i.e., homemade granola, jams, etc... it's nice to hear his enthusiasm for the food too! Don't believe the hype, but this place does have great bones to use for growth. Idk that I would agree that this place has 2 or 3 locations in one. The room may be a bit separate by seating and colors... My stars concern the food. The menu was interesting and inviting. The Sunday brunch I attended even had a special cocktail that was freshly made that day. I was so very excited to try some dishes that I ordered 2 brunch entrees. Yes, two! The truffle eggs were decided upon based on other pics and reviews and the donut chicken biscuit was for the sake of adventure. Neither disappointed, but I was quite full by the end of my journey. Went here a couple weeks ago for drinks! It was pretty cool. When I went it was right between lunch and dinner time so it was empty but that made it all the better. During this time they only serve burgers and pizza. I waited for the happy hour so I could try a good drink and appetizer. Oaxaca scramble: nothing special. It comes with a thimble of salsa with negative heat. Jalapeno aioli is nonexistent in taste. It needed salt and other things. Best part was the croissant but you can just get that from the bakery. House smoked salmon with truffle scramble: truffle scramble was dry and truffle taste was nonexistent. I did chew on a few small chunks of what I assume to be the truffle? Salmon was ok and the dill spread was barely noticeable unless you eat the 2 sprigs of dill garnish. Best part was the side if spinach. Don't waste time on the flavorless potatoes. Unless you don't like any taste on potatoes other than the potato taste itself. Eggs Benedict with pulled pork: the pulled pork was any other pulled pork but in a larger chunk form. The hollandaise taste that one would expect to accompany a poached egg on a plate with the word Benedict in it, was missing. I think they left it out. The best part of this dish was the poached egg and the side of spinach. Cappuccino: pretty in appearance and great tasting coffee beans. I would come here for coffee and croissant if I want to impress and out of towner. Plates and ambiance: the serving plates are huge. Perfect for an aerial Instagram shot of the food. The ambiance is also very impressive. The restaurant is pretty and decorated in mid century mixed with vintagey vibes like the check came in an old cassette tape case. The fried gnocchi with sage butter had neither sage nor butter and was chewy. The mahi-mahi main course was slightly over cooked and dry while the mashed squash it was served with came out cold. The cocktails were tasty and I enjoyed the crepe brûlée for dessert but I don't think we will be going back. read more
