The squad has been chatting up this place and when they say it is like Tout Suite I die a little inside, because Tout Suite is the worst and I already got #savage on them in their own yelp review. You will be delighted to know W+M is nothing like Tout Suite. W+M food is awwww-wait for it-awesome. To put the two establishments in the same league would be like comparing cholera (not fun, if I remember my García Márquez faithfully) to a long weekend in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando (hecka 2 much fun.)
They do breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, the bake shop, and Uncle's cough syrup so they do a lot of different things. This review is only going to cover a lunch experience on an average Thursday.
Parking: small lot with valet and general Midtown street parking where she may be found. The lot was full so I did not get to lot it up. I watched the signs out on the street and I returned to the Dragon being unscathed - no tickets and not up on cinder blocks, so this area is not as 'in transition' as it still looks like it is a decade after the transition began.
Atmo: It is set up in a 1950s industrial warehouse space that has been completely converted into a bright, happy, and colorful place with lots of windows. Arriving at 11:30 for lunch it is not that busy yet and you can get instantly seated. Noon and beyond there is a wait, the tables are full, and it gets so loud it is hard to hold a conversation. I was a lot happier when I could hold a conversation at regular person volume.
Service: Based on the other yelp reviews I was really looking forward to meeting this super grumpy hostess that yelpers like Bonnie C., Ashley G., and Doris D. have called out. She wasn't particularly nice, but she wasn't nasty to me and my dining companion. She said exactly nothing and led us to our table as if we were horses being led to the glue factory. Our waitress was alright - we got water refilled easily. However one of the dim points of the experience was that we were being 'checked on' an exaggerated amount of times. I am aware that I am totes adorbs so it might be because of that, and it might also have had something to do with my dining companion's face having several broken bones in it. But several waitresses that weren't even our own (plus our own waitress) were swinging by constantly to assess our situation and lives? Our lunch from walking in to walking out took 85 minutes and we were checked on a record 14 times to see if we were alright before the bill came. I guess they really like making sure u r ok here, so much so it is a very firm annoyance punctuating what is otherwise a casual lunch.
Menu: Perusing the online menu on their well-coded biz website I already knew what my order was going to be before I sat down at the table. Boomers? Say no more, fam. The pizza with wood grilled mushrooms + olives + ricotta salata rings up at $13 so it is in roughly the same price point as Tiny Boxwood's (one of my other fave-fave-fave spots), Dolce Vita, and Piola. The pizzas are the most expensive thing on the lunch menu though. Incomprehensibly the margherita is even more expensive than the other pizzas, which is opposite of how things work at Piola and everywhere else I am familiar with from Bertuccis in Harvard Square to CPK. But that's how it is.
Pizza: the mushroom pizza is amazeballs. It is thin crust but with some deliciously soft doughy zones in the pie. It is wood burned and has some scorch marks but it is not burnt to a crisp. The mushrooms are actually well present in proportion to other ingredients and since they are wood grilled, they have the perfect texture and bold taste. The olives are just as good for point/counterpoint aftertaste. It is a huge pizza. I ate all I wanted and still had plenty to take home for a tasty 3am snack-to-be.
Doughknots: Yo Tony, how'd you get these doughknots so fresh? This is one of the best desserts I have found in the city including my coveted cupcakes. They come out warm, rocked with cardamom sugar and honey. It is so soft, sweet, warm, and delicious. You can skip the pizza all day long if that's how you want to live your life, but you should definitely order the doughtknots no matter what you do and thank me later. Some of the more negative reviewers of this place did not order doughknots so there ya go, $5 dessert item can make or break this place.
For a posh dandy's lunch out on the town, this has everything a brother could ask for limited to food and food quality. With 112 reviews for the place I was surprised they are only carrying a 3.5 star rating. This is one of the nicer lunch places inside the loop. The only weak spots are that it is very loud past noon, the hostess is not pleasant at all, and waitstaff will annoy you hardcore as you try to eat your food in peace.
~~~ (that is me awarding them some yelpy star power since emojis are no bueno in yelp reviews and I am going to allow the food to speak for itself more loudly than the service does) read more
