Great spot! These were some dishes I've never really tried before, and they packed a lot of flavor. I'm glad I got this introduction to Malaysian food. Malaysian Spiced Wings - Big juicy wings, with some curry-like sauce, really delicious. Curry Laksa (vegetables) - I've only ever Laksa noodles in store bought ramen packs, and I thought they tasted very similar. EXCEPT, the curry laksa here just had much more depth of flavor. The kind of broth that tastes like its been stewing for hours rather than the ramen kind. Nasi Lemak (chicken) - Tasty dish, but wasn't the fan of the texture. I like a curry where there are different ingredients and textures, but this one was a bit too mushy. I still enjoyed the dish overall and the pickled veggies were a nice addition, but I'd proably try something different next time. Kaya Pandan Jam Toasted Croissant - I can't exactly describe what the kaya pandan jam tasted like, but it's really nice. Creamy, not too sweet, maybe a slightly earthy flavor. Visited this local grocery store around the corner from my hotel, and noticed that there was a Malaysian food pop-up there called Wee's Cozy Kitchen. It piqued my attention enough that I decided to come by several hours later to get my dinner there. Bit of a unique setup as it's literally just a desk at the front with a menu you can order off. You put your order in on Square and wait. And then someone comes to bring your food out all nicely wrapped up! This is probably because the person who would take your order is actually also making the food in the bank/ Ordered the Beef Rendang, since I wanted to try something that was uniquely Malaysian. The beef was very tender and paired well with the sauce. It also had an unexpected spicy kick to it, but it wasn't overwhelming. I'm no stranger to restaurants inside of other businesses, but this one took some getting used to. While there are a few tables inside of Royal Blue, Wee's is definitely better equipped for takeout. There's a separate register toward the front of the store for you to place your order. However, there's a very good chance the proprietor will be in the back making food, so it's really a spot for you to browse the menu and order online. Once you get past the set-up, however, Wee's is very, very good. The menu offers Malaysian curries, noodles, satays, snacks, and drinks. I opted for a beef rendang and a Thai green tea. After about 15-20 minutes, Wee emerged to hand me my order. She gave me a warm greeting and seemed invested in me enjoying my meal. And enjoy it I did! The meat was tender, the sauce rich and creamy, and the coconut flavors paired well with the pickled vegetables. There was also a lot of it: for $18, I felt like I got my money's worth. Love that Wee's has a following, especially bc Malaysian food can be hard to find. The ordering station is right at the front when you enter into Royal Blue Grocery. There wasn't anyone manning the station, so we were told to order online and wait. When we returned, our food was there but no one to thank or say hi to! It's moved. Their current and only location is now inside Royal Blue Grocery at 609 Congress Avenue. The grocery is small but very cool. It's got seating for five inside and additional tables outside. For beverages, Wee's offers an absolutely amazing Thai green tea, and you can also buy any beverage you want from the grocery store, including beer, wine or hard kambucha. There's a parking garage on the backside of the same block. But bring your smallest vehicle. It's tight and most of the spaces are compact spaces. Don't come here for the service, but for the food. The owner, Wee, is so welcoming and nice to all the customers and checks in to make sure all the food is to your liking. I ordered the Chicken Curry Laksa and it was so similar to what I have had in Asia! They are located in downtown so I was able to find street parking pretty easily. I highly recommend grabbing a meal here if you work in downtown or are going to any events in the area. They are really in a convenient location. read more

Serving up delicious Malaysian food, Wee's Cozy Kitchen is the very definition of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Located inside a Shell gas station near the UT campus, this place is one of Austin's best kept secrets. The portions of food here are so generous, the service was friendly and accommodating, and there is seating available. I believe they're only open in the afternoons, but be patient as this is a two-person operation so you're guaranteed your food is made to order. And you won't be disappointed! The beef rendang was tender and flavorful. I would easily order this again. The seafood nasi lemak was filled with different kinds of protein, like shrimp and squid, and each bite carried a wave of satisfaction. Each of these entrees came with a side dish of dried anchovies, which provided a nice contrast, and cucumbers, for freshness. Not pictured is the kaya toast, which was my personal introduction to Malaysian food years ago. The flavor was nostalgic and delicious, although next time I'd probably have it as a toast instead of a croissant as I would much prefer the crunch. Wee, a really sweet person, is the only chef and cooks every dish herself. Be patient. When your order is ready, you'll know it's straight off the stove and piping hot. The char kway teow (fried rice noodles) is tasty. It's not exactly what I'm used to but if you love stir fried noodles, you'll like it. But omg, the beef rendang! Looove the beef rendang. Gonna order nasi lemak with chicken next as I find myself craving a taste of home. Happy to see that Malaysia's national dish is on the menu here. Been here for dinner twice and had a great experience both times! Came on a weekday and weekend evening and didn't experience any wait to order each time. With that said everything is made to order, and there is a super small staff, so I wouldn't come here in a rush. The staff is super friendly and very willing to help if you're unsure on what to order I've tried the Beef Rendang, Chicken Nasi Lemak, and Pandan filled Croissant. Both entrees are super flavorful and have a very different flavor profile from other Asian cuisines I've tried. I'd describe both dishes as rich and nutty, with the rendang leaning more rich and nasi lemak more nutty. Both are absolutely worth trying! They have a couple different filling options for the croissant/toast that I'm sure would also be delicious, but the pandan croissant was good enough that I had it for dessert both times. the filling is super creamy and reminds me a little bit of taro desserts I've had Particularly given its convenient location this has become one of my favorite spots in town. The Char Kway Teow w/ Chicken was good, but the chicken was salty and I would have liked more veges. I don't know if they do a spicy version, but it's quite bland spice wise. Flavor was good. 4/5 The Rendeng w/ Beef was good flavor but the beef was dry and chewy. Requested spicy but it was not spicy at all. I think they just don't do spicy? Wee's Cozy Kitchen has been on my radar for a while -- and I'm happy to report that it lived up to my expectations. :) My dad and I shared the beef rendang: the meat was tender and complex in flavor. It paired nicely with the rice, which tasted similar to the rice served in Hainanese chicken. The pickled vegetables added a refreshing, acidic contrast. And the peanuts, cucumbers, and shrimp chips was the cherry on top. The owner of the place was so sweet. She chatted with us a bit before going back to work. HIDDEN GEM in a gas station very close to UT campus! First, the location means that it conveniently has parking spaces. And despite it being inside the food mart of the Shell, there are tables to sit and eat at!! Convenient x2! This place serves Malaysian food, which is really not easy to find here in Austin. So far I have had curry laksa, nasi lemak, kiew tiew, and Bak kut teh. All are delicious, freshly made to order, and made with so much love. There are probably many dishes that are unfamiliar to most people, but do venture a try instead of sticking with what you can get in many other places. I especially recommend the nasi lemak with seafood -- that seafood sambal is a flavor bomb! The woman who works here is a delight! Passionate about what she does, warm, welcome, and smiling. She works a full-time job at UT and then comes here to run her own little place. It's only her though so please be patient. Don't come here looking for a fast meal or fast food. Seating inside is limited - there's a few tables that seat two. By far the best thing we got was the beef rendang - so tender, flavorful, and the pickled veggies that are served with it are delicious. Even the rice was flavorful! I thought about coming back the next day for this dish - ha! The roti canai was good and had an interesting lentil dipping sauce and the char kway teow was a standard noodle dish. My colleague who ordered when I did received his food 30-ish minutes after reported delivery time. Many customers around me were upset about orders taking too long during lunch. Some said they had been waiting over an hour. It's worth noting that orders cannot be changed from menu. I requested rice noodles (available in other dishes), but the owner said that's why she cancelled the order and that could order a dish with rice noodles. read more

Great Malaysian food find inside a gas station convenience store! The owner, Wee, is hands on and she can cook. A passionate server assisted us with a selection of Wee's best Malaysian dishes. The wok hei on the beef char kway teow was a standout as was the chicken nasi lemak. The tex mex eggroll was recommended because the vegetable rolls were sold out and they were tasty, albeit not traditional Malay. The pandam flavor kaya toast was a nice sweet ending. The adventure of dining in a convenience store adds to the allure and there are plenty of soft drink options as a result but alcohol is not allowed to be consumed inside the restaurant area of the store. read more

I've never had Malaysian food so didn't know what to expect. The place is inside a convenience store gas station. They share a spot with a taco place that operates in the morning and Wee's is in the evening. We went on. Thursday night around 7:30. The wait was about 30 minutes for the food as it was a busy night as the NYT article just came out on Monday. They let us know of the wait before we put in the order though. The food was fabulous. The Beef Rendang is really really spicy. It's flavorful and beef was tender. The spice isn't long lasting but def makes your eyes water. Chicken char kway teaw was the best dish. I think it tastes very similar to Pad See Eaw. The noodles are wide and flat. Theres some veggies. Chicken Nasi Lemak was also very tasty. The rendang and nasi lemak came with rice, fried egg, cucumbers and peanuts and some fish and a shrimp chip. The chef/owner Wee is very nice. She comes and chats. Lovely smile on her face the whole night. She offered us Thai tea on the house. The Thai tea is really good. Definitely would go again maybe earlier in the evening so food doesn't run out. Located in Foodie's AKA the old Wag-a-Bag gas station, this is a hidden Malaysian spot operated by one sole owner/cook it seems. I am a die-hard fan of Laksa, so I am SO glad that the Laksa was delicious and well-made. Even the ingredients in it that I don't normally order still made the bowl delicious. An affordable knock out of the park! Although I hav ea guilty pleasure for the instant laksa by La Mian since it's so similar to khao poon (lao), this one was a mild version that felt very... well, cozy! The char kway teow was also enjoyed by my partner. The ONLY reason why I'm docking one star is because of the process to actually get the food. We order and the wait was estimated to be 10 minutes. Since it's in a gas station, clearly customers might pick up a drink or look for snacks. During that short amount of time, they had given my order to someone that came in after me. Very odd... Is there no system to just ask what they had/their name? They assure that they'll remake it, but during that time they had taken 2-3 people's orders, those same people ate their food and had left! 50 minutes has gone by at this point. The cashier then reassures that it'll just be another minute since it seems like he forgot to pass the laksa ticket. It was a really a sour experience just to order food. Although the food made up for it, I'm not sure if I was just so hungry that ANYTHING would've tasted good. Personally, if Chicken Rice Joe was still around, I would pick that over this. We found this spot cause the owner was outside and handing out flyers the day before. Wee is so kind and so sweet. We ordered the Chicken Nasi Lamak, which came out piping hot and so flavorful. They had outdoor seating and a few indoor spots in the grocery store, so there were different vibes you could choose from. 10/10 recommend Wees!
