Let me first just say that because I had an amazing experience here, I decided to make a Yelp account and tell Chicago about it..
And with that being said, on with the review...
Generally, I am not a fan of anything related to or about optometry. Because my prescription is the equivalent of an 60 yo man with glaucoma, I usually refrain from purchasing eyewear because the lenses always end up being really heavy, even when thinned out and the frames that go with them are not fashionable in the least. And contacts are a no go because they irritate my eyes or I'll forget to take them out. However, thanks to head splitting migraines due to years of eyestrain, I was forced by my doctor to go and get another pair of unflattering coke bottle-esque glasses to help alleviate the pain.
After checking out many, many, many eyewear stores (America's Best, Pearle, LensCrafters, See, d/Vision...even Sears just to name a few) I stumbled onto Wear by sheer accident. I figured it was just going to be yet another bourgeois boutique eyewear store but that was as far from the truth as I could imagine. I walked in and was greeted by a bubbly redhead named Nora. She asked me how my day was and after the usual salesperson to customer banter, I started to peruse the selection of frames. I'm no connoisseur of eyewear, but i must say that they had a wide array of styles and vendors, from Theory to ici Berlin. And unlike some of the other places I had been to, I was given the space and freedom to look around without being constantly asked if I was finding everything ok, or if there was something they could help me with. I found about 4 pairs of glasses I liked and Nora came over and asked if I had tried any on and suggested that I should. She spent an hour with me helping to find the right frame that was appropriate for my face and offering really good suggestions and feedback. She also gave me pricing on alot the frames, which was actually less than I was expecting and also told me about some of the ways glasses could be thinned out. I told her about previous experience with glasses and she told me that since I hadn't been using glasses for some time, that my vision probably wasn't as bad as it had been. I ended up selecting this GORGEOUS light weight Chrome Hearts frame in the end, and she offered to schedule an appointment with me to meet with their in house optometrist, which, lucky for me, was that same Thursday. Admittedly I was becoming price conscious and told this to Nora and she was nice enough to give me an estimated quote for the services, when taken into account that my insurance covered a decent amount, wasn't bad at all. I went ahead and scheduled the appointment with their optometrist.
Dr. Jordan was absolute amazing. Not only was my exam quick and relatively hassle free, but he also was really patient, and answered any questions that I had or didn't even think of asking. Once we were done, he told me that my frames and prescription would be sent out and that in about 10 days they should be back in. I went back to the front, where Nora offered upgrades to my lenses (such as having them thinned, reflective coating) I paid my bill and was given their business card and was told to call if I had any questions. I bid him and Nora farewell and went home, eager to actually get a pair of glasses
So 8 days went by and I got a call from Nora, telling me that my frames were in. I went in picked up my frames and tried them on. Nora noticed they were a bit wide around the temples, so she adjusted them for me on the spot. After trying them on again the only thing I could utter was the word perfect...not just because of the fit, but because the style was right and the lens weight was light. Perfect
I definitely recommend going to Wear Eyewear for frames and lenses. The quality of service, to me, was exceptional. Because of them I now have my first pair of glasses that I love. And I'm also looking forward to next years eye exam, which is something that I'm no longer dreading.
Big thank you to the Wear Eyewear staff!
