Great neighborhood brunch spot in Baltimore! I visited on a Sunday morning and we were able to call ahead and put our name on the list. When we arrived 15-20 minutes later, we only had to wait a few minutes for a table. This restaurant is very small and popular, so expect a wait if you go at prime time on a weekend. We were lucky to get an outdoor table because it was a beautiful day and the inside looked a little cramped. My table of 4 ordered 4 coffees and 4 separate brunch dishes. Our choices were: the stuffed omelette, the sweet potato polenta, the risotto fritters, and the hangover special. First of all, all of the dishes were HUGE! We definitely shouldn't have gotten 4 dishes because we weren't able to finish all of the food. The sweet potato polenta was my favorite dish. It was served with eggs, grilled veggies, goat cheese, and balsamic vinegar. Wow was it delicious! The sweetness of the sweet potato worked perfectly with the creaminess of the goat cheese, the egg, and the veggies. The stuffed omelette - comes stuffed with veggies and meat. I chose to get the meat on the side, which was good because I didn't end up liking their turkey sausage very much. I really enjoyed this dish as well! The omelette was FULL of delicious grilled vegetables and came with a side of potatoes and jalapeno cornbread. I really really liked the cornbread! The risotto fritters - I didn't think that this dish had much flavor but my dining companions really enjoyed it. I liked the side salad that came with it a lot. The hangover special - I only tried the goat cheese mac and cheese which was good! My friend really enjoyed this dish and it was HUGE. She couldn't even finish half of it! Overall I really enjoyed my meal! The food all tasted very fresh and the portions were huge. The owner was very friendly and made us feel welcome. The one thing I found a little weird about the restaurant was that you had to walk through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. Not just next to a prepping station but I walked next to women cutting up and cooking huge pieces of meat. Seemed a little strange to me. My friend and I went on a spontaneous brunch date on a weekday and boy was our world rocked. We ordered the jerk duck confit with waffles and chicken livers with goat Mac and cheese. Both were served over 2 poached eggs. I can't fully articulate how masterfully the meats were prepared and how the waffles and Mac and cheese complemented the meal perfectly. I've never had such scrumptious chicken livers and would be interested to know how they're prepared. Good Lord this food is amazing. The cornbread is a must try (each serving has 2 pieces so it's definitely shareable). The Dope Juice is a yummy red sangria. I had the crab quesadilla, and WOW--the sweet potato confit gives a subtle sweetness that balances well with the savory of the crabmeat and corn. It doesn't take that long to prepare an omelette and an eggs benedict. It turned out our dishes were already prepared, but the waiters had failed to bring them to our table in a timely manner. By the time our food came, it was barely warm and bordering cold. We were willing to overlook the poor service but when we started eating, we both agreed that the food also was not deserving of its price and high Yelp reviews. My friend and I waited around 35 mins for a table, but took a walk in the neighborhood to pass the time, which was lovely. The food was outstanding! Great portions, fresh and flavorful. I ordered the stuffed omelette, which came with potatoes and jalapeño cornbread. I don't eat meat, so mine contained just vegetables and cheese, but you can add meat to it if you'd like. The cornbread was UNREAL! Amazing texture, and a nice flavor without being too hot or spicy. Potatoes were also cooked perfectly and the omelette was quite full! My friend got the fried risotto cakes with egg and bacon, which she raved about. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Baltimore! Check this place out :) UPDATE - I went back the next day with a different friend because I wanted her to experience the wonder that is this restaurant! We arrived a little later than the previous day - maybe more like 12:30pm? and they sat us right away! I got the breakfast burrito, she had a few sides (cornbread, parmesan grits & sautéed veggies), and we split a carafe of mimosas. For the amount of food you get, the prices are reasonable, and if you're interested in getting a bit of a buzz, the mimosa carafe can be easily shared between two people. This place is a neighborhood gem but there were a few things that I was not impressed about. There is limited seating inside (seats about 18 people) but in general, the food and prices are ideal. I ordered the stuffed omelette with jalapeno cornbread and potatoes, and my boyfriend got the BBQ shrimp and grits. He loved his dish and scraped his plate clean. I was disappointed that the stuffed omelette didn't blow me away; it felt a bit dry and under-seasoned. My boyfriend also ordered a iced coffee, but he got a Coke instead. Luckily he didn't immediately add milk to that drink, otherwise that would have tasted funky. He didn't really care enough to tell the waiter about the mistake though. Overall, I really wish they had more waiters. Service was slow and we waited a while before I could get a to-go box and pay for our meal. I think I can compare their grits to NOLA, which is also of high praise. Their BBQ shrimp and grits was a great first option for me (I say first, because I know I'll be back). I wish my jalapeno cornbread had been warm, but I have no other complaints. Water for Chocolates is a no frills type of place. This was an excellent hole in the wall brunch spot in Baltimore. I can see why they generally have long wait lines. We showed up around 10:30 am on a Saturday and were lucky enough to snag a table for four people but soon after, I saw a long wait outside of the restaurant. I could see the passion that Chef Sean Guy has for his work and he was extremely attentive and patient with us. From my latte in a mason jar to the sweet potato polenta, I loved it all. The sweet potato polenta was so unique in flavor and I've never had anything like it. The vegetables were grilled perfectly to enjoy with the over easy eggs. The portions were huge and I definitely had trouble finishing my food. There are so many other great versatile options to choose from depending on your level of appetite and craving. I tried some of my friend's raison bread french toast (again never had any type of french toast on raisin bread) and enjoyed all the fresh fruit and chocolate combination. Overall the food was not "overdone" so I left feeling refreshed and satisfied. The other great part was how easy it was to split the bill and add the tip according to what we ordered through a tablet. I think most restaurants should use this idea. The only regret I have is not ordering the side of jalapeno corn bread. I was told it's fantastic and these days I find myself dreaming about what it could have potentially tasted like. W4C is operated out of a rowhouse; it's a tiny place and seats about a dozen in the foyer. I always love the smells wafting from their kitchen as I walk to school. It's a true neighborhood joint and local artists' photos decorate the walls. There's some outdoor seating that wraps along the Wolfe Street side of the restaurant, which is usually bustling with brunchers on sunny weekends. Their food is hearty and wholesome. Ingredients are fresh -- I've never received any dry or wilted veg suck into my meals. Their various sides run ~$5 and sandwiches are ~$9. W4C does have some fancier entrees, including fish fillets and steaks (~$18), but I haven't been for any of their larger meals. If I'm ever in need of a warm, no-frills sandwich and a bowl of mac, W4C is my front runner. My favourite item is, no contest, the goat cheese mac. It's a $5 side, which I've sometimes just ordered on its own or in a double portion. The mac is creamy and mellow, but the goat cheese adds a note of tartness. I don't think I've had a meal at W4C where I haven't either ordered the mac as a side or for take-out. Due to the restaurant's size, seating can be a bit of a hassle; weekend mornings and workday lunches can be a jam (Hopkins Hospital folks sometimes run down here for a bite). I normally find grits too cheesy, but these were perfect. The shrimp were really delicious too - I think I had around six or seven? Cornbread was moist and dense. Everybody else at my table had the raisin french toast which they all thoroughly enjoyed. It was covered in fruit and, like all other reviews said, sweet but not too sweet. We also had the sangria pitcher which was so good. No bitter taste, hints of cinnamon and berries. Fruits were strawberry and blueberry, some blackberry. Service - We were an odd table of five, and waited approximately ten minutes for a table at 10:30AM on a Saturday. Pleasantly surprised! The employees were all very friendly and welcoming. Atmosphere - I got a strong home-y vibe to this place. Fresh flowers on the table, open kitchen concept, and everybody happily conversing over good food.
