Pecan Crusted Steelhead
James M.

The Washington Avenue Grill, or WAG, is an antiquated looking, yet very unique restaurant that is off the corner of the White Rock business district. I was immediately captivated by its old-fashioned decor. The restaurant is also very spacious and has three dining areas, two of which have great views outside while the one is really clean and elegant looking. I ordered the Pecan Crusted Steelhead with a Bubbly Sangria Mocktail. The sangria I had was testament that you can have a great drink without alcohol. The entree was fantastic. The steelhead tasted good and very meaty. The tarragon sauce was flavourful, and it complimented everything on the dish. Even the vegetables tasted great from how they were seasoned. I liked the staff that were taking care of me, and they looked like they enjoy their work there. If I came back to White Rock, I would make sure to come eat at Washington Avenue again because there are a lot of distinct menu choices that I would like to try.

We dined at Washington Avenue Grill on a Friday night and were glad we made a reservation because it was fairly busy. The entrance to the restaurant is quite nice and stylish, but the further you go back into the dining room(s) the less cared for the decor seems to be. It was by no means run down or bad looking, just significantly more plain than the entrance would lead you to expect. The menu is quite diverse and offers many choices for carnivores and fish eaters alike. I noticed one vegan option on the menu that sounded rather good. Our table ordered a variety of main courses and we all had salads to start. Overall, the food was very adequate. It was flavourful, but didn't quite meet the expectations set by the menu descriptions. My caesar salad and pasta was slightly more bland than I'd have preferred. I don't want to give the impression that it was a negative experience because it wasn't. The service was friendly and helpful and I'd recommend the restaurant to diners in the area. I'd just caution them to use care in making their selections.

First time visit was highly recommended by my neighbor. Visibly it is a quite interesting place lobby, especially. First thing to notice is that you will need to claim a set of stairs to get to the restaurant, once there you can sit inside, or on the outside patio, which has an enclosed section with an semi open roof, which we sat in. Ordered a cup of their crab bisque soup which was very tasty. A couple of slices of bread would've been nice to of been added. I ordered the seafood Penny pasta, which again was very tasty and generous with the seafood, kudos that it was served nice and hot. My partner ordered the seafood salad and he was pleased with it both and taste and quantity of seafood. I had a glass of their house Cabernet and that was OK with a meal. All, in all quite enjoyable, I'll come back again and try other items on the menu. Incidentally, they also advertise live music sometimes.

This is magnificent, what a view. Modern but eclectic, they have snapped it up! Of you haven't, been it is a must go... A must go for a dinner after a romantic stroll on the beach. We had the beef short rib which was fantastic. Our vegetarian friend love the Brussels sprouts and tofu. Cream brûlée is fantastic! Happy birthday to our friend!

Stuffed chicken

Stuffed chicken was delicious with white wine. We didn't get the spot with the nice view on Saturday, but we picked the right food. Not everything here is delicious. The lobster didn't get high ratings, but Stuffed was surprisingly delicious. I would come back for the happy hours

We haven't been to the WAG in a long time so thought we would give it a try as the menu looked good. They take reservations and it gets busy at dinner time, I would reserve if you can. My expectations were on the higher side as I know this restaurant is well known, it's also in a great location and has been around for many years. However, I was disappointed on a few things. The ambience is so pretty on the deck and the enclosed deck area, very bright, cute chandeliers and a great vibe overall. But, it was so hot . No AC, just a few ceiling fans, floor fans and open windows with you praying for a breeze to come through. I found it uncomfortable. Service, our waiter was prompt to greet us and our food came out quickly but then he disappeared and got busy. Our table and the one beside us were waiting for him to come by after our meals were done. We had to do the wave to get his attention. I hate having to do that. For the food, we ordered a caesar salad to split. It has a mix of romaine and kale, with crispy capers and croutons. It tasted ok but the lettuce was not fresh. The center part of the romaine leaf that should be white was more opaque and had a slight pink to it....not fresh. it was throughout the salad. I ordered the Lobster ravioli and my husband ordered The seafood hot pot. I will start with the ravioli. It was described on the menu as a roasted garlic cream sauce, basil pesto and sundried tomatoes as the base. I've attached a picture. they put a scoop of the pesto and sundried tomatoes on top, not mixed in with the sauce. I had no idea how to eat this dish with those just thrown on top like an afterthought. The ravioli itself was bland, cream sauce lacked flavour (needed a flavourful/strong cheese or?). I didn't like it. I tried some of the hot pot, again the description is a spicy red curry cream. It was not spicy, tasted watered down and flavour was just not there. What I will say is it had a good amount of prawns, mussels and salmon. I am not sure if I would try the WAG again. Our bill was just under $100 and there was only 1 glass of $8.50 wine.

Had a fantastic lunch experience nearly by accident. Over the weekend, the boyfriend and I had planned to have a nice lunch and outing in White Rock but our original picks didn't pan out because no reservations allowed/long lineups/COVID etc. Driving East along the White Rock beachfront and slowly becoming discouraged at the sight of the long lineup of cars and foot traffic, I remembered Washington Avenue Grill, a restaurant I had visited with my parents a few years prior. We were headed in that general direction already, so it was worth a shot. The WAG (I'm going to presume that's its nickname) was as I remembered it. The limited number of parking stalls were all filled, I suspect because of the great weather and the Cannibas store nearby. No matter, as we found and paid for street parking a short walk away. A converted house, the restaurant portion is located on the second floor and signs directed us to take the stairs one group at a time. After a moment of trepidation (what if the restaurant was full?) I was pleased to discover tables available and spaced apart, and we could choose where to sit. We finally settled on a table in the sunroom/covered patio and I noted they had opened all available windows for maximum ventilation. Whether it was later in the lunch hour, increased table spaces, or the restaurant being on the outskirts of the touristy White Rock beaches, the place was calm and quiet. Staff wore masks, we set up cutlery ourselves, and signs assured patrons that washrooms were cleaned every 30 minutes. Boyfriend and I ordered the Steamed Mussels: a huge hit! Bathed in light tomato basil, white wine broth and spices, we inhaled the appetizer, broth and all. Chosen entrees included the Grilled Steelhead Burger and WAG Burger. I thought my burger was delicious with real greens tucked in to the juicy fish (though I can't identify Steelhead on taste). I had a bite of the boyfriend's WAG burger and thought that was an solid burger, with the beef patty looking handpressed (to me that is the mark of a high quality burger patty). I did think we got jibbed a bit on the amount of fries, but after finishing the appetizer and the burgers, I couldn't really complain. For starting the afternoon in fear I would end up hangry because we couldn't find a place to eat, this turned into a big win. Highly recommend this restaurant if you have your own mode of transportation and choose to venture out to the "outskirts" of the touristy area of the beach.

Seafood platter

The food was mediocre. Our group had the lobster ravioli, butternut squash ravioli, short rib poutine, dry ribs, fish and chips, seafood platter and the lamb dish. We came because the restaurant looked interesting and the menu had a good variety of food . But it was just meh. The service was decent and the servers were friendly. Unfortunately we were not seated in the more desirable part of the restaurant. I took the chance to walk around to check out the other parts of the restaurant and it was really beautiful. Make sure to get the "good seats" if you ever go.

Elderflower cocktail

My boyfriend and I came here last week for dinner. It looks like a haunted house but weirdly cozy at the same time..! We went on a Thursday night at around 6pm and it started filling up at around 6:30pm. Beautiful views where we were sitting, I wish we were sat by the window but it's just another excuse to go again! We shared a few appies and split an entree: Carpaccio: 4/5 really great flavours and would 100% order again! The only note is that there was A LOT of cheese on top so the beef flavour fell a bit flat for me. However, it was still good. Calamari: 5/5 really flavourful and cooked perfectly. Mussels in tomato broth: 5/5 amazing! The both was really good and came with a few pieces of bread to soak up the leftover broth afterwards. Bisque soup: 5/5 I was a bit hesitant to get this soup but really glad we did! It was a very friendly portion and delicious! Lobster ravioli: 3/5 I was a bit disappointed with this dish.. the sauce was a bit bland for me and the ravioli pieces were almost awkwardly too big where you had to cut it into 4 sections and it was a bit undercooked. I had an elderflower cocktail which was not great.. very underwhelming as it almost tasted like a highball but, I ordered a glass of wine after which made up for it (had the Pinot noir). Overall, I would come again but order just appies to share and a glass of wine and enjoy the beautiful view! Very cute date night spot and worth visiting!

Love the location. Dinning room is on the second floor so wonderful views of the water. Would be a great place for sunset watching. I had the beef short ribs with a Korean BBQ sauce. They serve it with rice but I would of preferred mashed potatoes so I had fries instead of rice. I'd give my dish a 3/5 as it was good but not completely fall apart. The fish and chips very nice. Lightly batter that wasn't greasy and nice and crisp. The fries had a garlic rosemary seasoning that was very subtle but yummy. Look forward to going back and trying the stuffed chicken breast or the Lobster stuffed ravioli that our server recommended. She was lovely and so helpful with the menu.

Lobster stuffed ravioli

I'm from Vancouver but an errand brought us into White Rock so we came here at the suggestion of a friend who had been years ago. The decor is really cute, with a lovely covered patio. the food was amazing. I had the lobster stuffed ravioli which really was truly stuffed- they did not skimp on the amount of lobster. Pasta was cooked to perfection, served with a few prawns and asparagus in a velvety creamy sauce. My boyfriend ordered the chicken linguine which was also really creamy and full of flavour. Service wasn't the best but decent enough to not affect my rating. Very reasonably priced as well. I would return next time I'm in White Rock.

I ordered the platter that came with a whole bunch of stuff including fried oysters, scallops and shrimp. A small place that can get pretty busy but worth the wait.

Moby Dick's is obviously a busy place in the summer, being right across from the waterfront -- but…read morein January, it's a sleepy area and the restaurant is active, but not too busy. We found the food unremarkable - standard fish, standard chips, standard coleslaw, standard tartar sauce. All fried food is pretty standard, pretty greasy, but not any better or worse than many fish & chips shops. So why a 3-star rating rather than 4-stars? First, there is there menu and pricing: What is called a 1-piece fish & chips comes with 2 pieces - all identified fish comes with one extra piece. It's a gimmick, and mostly just annoying. 2nd, there is a charge for everything -- Want tartar sauce? There are three sizes, three prices. Want to substitute onion rings for the fries? Can't do it, even with an up-charge, though you can order fish and you can order onion rings, each separately, each with its own price. Coleslaw? Yes, but not instead of fries. And the coleslaw is pricey - a good sized portion, but a substantial price none-the-less. The portion sizes are reasonably large, but the incessant a-la-carte with each item with a price - one feels nickled and dimed to death. The atmosphere - ok, 1950s-ish, nothing special. The staff, friendly and attentive, but young and inexperienced. And then there was the problem with the cooking -- we got 5 pieces of fish (ordered 2 and 1, which is really 2+1 and 1+1 = 5). Four of them were pretty standard. One was undercooked - cooked on the outer edges (under the fried batter), and raw and translucent on the inside. Yes, they took that off the ticket, so I didn't have to pay for it, but biting into a piece of raw fish with the outside so hot it almost burned my mouth and the inside uncooked - not so pleasant. Moby Dick's gets good ratings from many Yelpers, but in my view, it's not worth going out of your way for.
