I'm shocked how I've never been here before. I believe this place has been around for years, which is even more shocking since I've never been here. The place has plenty of tables to dine in at, and from the looks of it, no reservations need to be made. There's definitely no frills here. However, there's great service. The restaurant serves an array or food here. I, of course, tried something different off the menu that I normally wouldn't order. I got the beef momos, which, with sauces it tasted good. There's a lot of liquid inside, so be careful. I got the chicken Then-Thuk, which is a traditional Tibetan flat hand pulled noodle soup. We were the only customer in this restaurant on a rainy cold Sunday for lunch. The service was great. I had read through the reviews and knew what I wanted to try before going to the restaurant. For three people, we got the - cheesy chicken soup, a side of ting mo, chili ribs, and an order of beef momos. The Bhutanese chicken cheesy soup $11 was spicy and so so good. The flavor was reminiscent of cheesy broccoli soup with lots of boneless thigh meat and green chili's. The ting mo ($2) were sliced and was very much like Chinese steamed buns. Fluffy and fought and great for dipping into the cheesy soup. The ribs $11 were made to be mild and it was fine for everyone. The ginger, scallion, garlic was great to go with the ting mo. The momos $9 are like soup dumplings but with thicker skin. It was fine but I liked the other two a bit more as they were more unique. Total was $34 and we were stuffed. Oh they also gave us a complimentary order of stirred fried garlicky bokchoy and broccoli! Delicious! I can foresee myself craving some of that cheesy chicken soup in the future. read more

I've never had HImalayan/Tibetan/Bhutanese food before and Wasabi Point was a great start! Ordered beef momos, Tibetan cabbage salad, house salad, thukpa with veggies, and sha datse, with a mango lassi, of course. The mango lassi and both salads were delicious and made a good starter. I felt like the ratio of dough to beef in the momos were too much so I wasn't a fan of those, but the Thukpa (basically thick noodles and veggies in soup with choice of meat/veggie) was yummy and the sha datse (chicken with peppers in a light cheese broth) blew me away. I want to eat datse every day, soooo good! It wasn't spicy for me at all so I added some hot sauce, but it was great without too. The broth was flavorful and tasted slightly similar to broccoli cheese soup, but for sure less thick and fattening. A few days later I ordered from their lunch menu and got the phing sha (clear noodle with beef and spinach), chicken and veggie, and veggie spring rolls with a choice of ting-mos. The phing sha and chicken/veggie dish were ok, but the spring rolls were good, made up of potatoes, carrot, and beansprouts. The tingmos were light and fluffy, like bread should be. He then took notice that on their menu there was TIBETAN food, fascinated with their "spicy beef", he ordered it. Ordered what the other Yelpers recommended and the food did not disappoint! :) Spare ribs (appetizer): I thought they would be American-style (not sure why) but it's more like the spare ribs you get at a Chinese place. Spicy but not too spicy (I almost wish they were more spicy). No matter, they were tasty! Sha datse: You normally don't see cheese in Asian soups so this was interesting and, again, tasty. I liked the little kick the peppers gave the soup. I gave the leftovers to my lil and she liked it as well! Mango lassi: Freaking addictive... I joked with the bf that we should add some soju in it and get him crunk. Ting mo: They reminded me of montaus (Cantonese for this kind of plain steamed bread), which I like. The bf, not so much. I just used it to dip into the sauce that the spare ribs had. Really glad this meal worked out because it was bit of a bolder move for us. The total was about $27 without tip. I really enjoyed the Ema Datsi (thick cheese broth with beef and peppers) with rice. I've never had Tibetan food before but this place seemed very authentic. The Japanese food seemed a bit random so we stuck with the Tibetan menu. For appetizers, we ordered the Beef Momos which were pretty much beef dumplings, and a chicken soup. The beef dumplings weren't anything crazy but not bad. The chicken soup tasted like egg drop soup. For entrees we ordered the chow mein noodles and mutton curry. The chow mein noodles weren't anything special, just lo mein but the mutton curry was very delicious and full of flavor. It was hands down the best dish that we ordered. I think we would definitely come back to try some of the other dishes. There were things that other tables ordered that looked very delicious. This place has some of the best Himalayan food! They have two menus that look almost identical from the outside, make sure to check out the Tibetan/Himalayan menu over the Japanese menu, because its where they really shine. They have quite a few vegetarian dishes on their menu too, which I really appreciate! Omygosh the Ema Datsi here is sooooooo good!! If you don't know what that is (I didn't until earlier this year) it is a Bhutanese dish that has a creamy cheesy broth with potatoes and chilis (similar to poblano peppers). You can order it with just potatos, veggies or a variety of different meats. Here they served it with simple white rice. I just got the potato one. The closest thing I can relate it to is a super flavorful thick chunky spicy potato soup! My bf Brian C. got his with beef. It has more meat than he is used to eating, but he absolutely loved it! The flavor of the cheese broth and peppers is ridiculously good! The Ting Mo (basically steamed buns) were a little dry compared to usual but VERY good dipped in the Ema Datsi broth. yum yum yum! I could eat this every day! As other reviews have mentioned the mango lassi is good, but definitely very tart/yogurt-y so avoid it if you prefer sweeter ones. read more

The ting mo on its own is plain, but it is extreme soft; and when dipped in the broth, really tasted good...although after the second taste of the datse, I loss all my taste buds. We ordered the beef version and I loved the tenderness of the beef. If the owner is reading this....PLEASE offer a milder version of this dish. PLEASE!!! Since I first uncovered what was really cooking inside Wasabi Point, I racked my brains trying to understand their choice of name; was it an elaborate ruse, or a wayward (or demented) marketing faux pas by the restaurateur equivalent of Terry Gillian? It was none of that; my digressions were beside the point. The word "Wasabi" had not been joined with a proper localization word like "Place", "Joint" or "Abode", but with an ambiguous word that can also be used to ascribe a myriad of meanings. Indeed, the Wasabi-like menu constituents inside of non-Japanese origin WERE the point. Wasabi Point, then, was a cunningly crafted metaphor meant for you to try one of the rarest, choicest, ethnic meals you will ever experience: Bhutanese food. Before I unriddled this Pan-Asian prankster, I had bypassed, ignored, and sauntered by in contempt at their seemingly uninspired admixture of name, food and decor, in the otherwise rich and exuberant ethnic food fauna to be found in the environs. The clear open windows and gigantic green lit logo "Wasabi Point" seemed more proper for a Chinese takeout place than for a respectable Japanese establishment. In my mind of minds, I (and not just me) regarded Wasabi Point as a predictable ringer. But one memorable day, undecided and hungry, we were in one of those I-want-Ramen moods that care not for authenticity, because even ringers can't screw up Ramen. Much. So imagine our surprise when the totality of the menu was carefully dedicated to Tibetan and Bhutanese food; the Japanese options allotted to a tiny section in the back, meant for unrepentant forbearance. We did just that. Having had Tibetan before many times, I decided to go with the unknown; Bhutanese cuisine; a string of soups all of which ended with the word "datse". I went with Sha-Datse which was described as a cheese soup with meat, chilies and potatoes. This was to become one of the best soups that I've ever had in my young life. I now fondly refer to it as "The Devil's Casserole" The cheese is melted in just the perfect way; not too thick, not to thin, laden with the floating potatoes, the meat, and the green chilies in the flesh and in spirit, as much of the flavor was embedded in the soup; a liquefied cheese concoction of such spicy might that it must provide a much needed succor to the Bhutanese inhabitants in the freezing alpine Himalayan parts of the country. After that first taste and tears (it'll make you cry of spice, I promise) two years ago, I've become an unremitting customer, and I've since come to know the Chef, the staff and the menu; their Tibetan menu being one of the bests in town, and I suggest you order a portion of Ting-momo to take with your Datse; to dip the fresh steamed bun on the cheese soup, then adding the red chili sauce available on the side, for a delightfully infernal palate experience. I've since tried Sha-Datse in another unnamed Tibetan establishment in Jackson Heights and it doesn't hold a candle to the one to be found at Wasabi Point. If you live in New York and enjoy trying new food experiences, you owe it to yourself to try Bhutanese food at least once in your life. As far as metaphors go, I once asked the good people at Wasabi what on Earth were they thinking when they decided to name it as they did; surely they hadn't intended to lure Japanese food aficionados into a Tibetan/Bhutanese surprise? Sadly, it was the fact that people are more commonly prone to go with what they know (instead of what they don't) what led them to bank on one of the most ubiquitous of Asian cuisines in the West. They were, though, thinking about changing the name, thanks in no small part to the large contingent of fans that cherish their excellent Tibetan/Bhutanese fare. Until then, I refuse to believe that we live among throngs of unadventurous simpletons that would rather stay within their conditioned ramparts instead of reaching out to the glorious diversity that titillates in this wonderful world of ours. I choose to see Wasabi Point as an ingenious metaphor; meant to pique the interest of Wasabi aficionados only to lure them into far greater levels of spicy bliss. An assessment which I've come to make due to my own undeniably dantesque experiences with the spicy datses. So I leave you with the old and wise literary adage, relearned and reworked for food joints everywhere: "Don't judge a food spot by it's cover" read more

This place took me right back to my middle school days in Kalimpong, India. The decor, the tables and chairs, the smell and yes the food. Despite the japanese reference in the name - this place has one of the best street style tibetan dish. Don't get me wrong - I love Japanese cuisine, the sushi roll... sashimi.. tempura but nothing beats the taste of some tibetan thukpa and momo. For my fellow yelpers, Momo is a tibetan/nepali style dumpling made from either meat or vegetables. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. Apparently, they also cater and unknowingly I already had tasted some of their delicious cuisine at a party I attended the night before. The place it self isn't the ideal "date" spot but if you're on a budget and hungry for some tibetan delicacies then this is the place to go. read more

I actually really like this place and wish I could give it a 4, but I have a couple of small, easily fixable (hint hint wasabi staff!) problems that prevent me from upping that score. 1. The momos taste like nothing. I can't say they're BAD but they're just not good. They taste like beef and salt - but really boring beef and salt. 2. Everything else tastes really good...but also really salty! Like really salty. 3. The ema dhatse used to taste really good, but in the past year or more it tastes very mild and bland. The cheese tastes different and the texture and taste have completely changed. It also used to be almost too spicy, which I understand changing, but I preferred that to boring. 4. One of the waiters cleared our table without asking us. We were done so it was okay, but he proceeded to pile pieces of the remaining food onto a couple of our plates for us to finish. This was extremely unprofessional and rude, never ever do that. BUT on the plus side! Everything is consistent and the service is fast enough. (But yes that means the momo is consistently boring and the food is consistently salty) I still really like this place!! That's why I gave it a 3. Stopped by here one day when I got a day off from work to spend as a lone wolf. I ordered from the Tibetan side of the menu and got the Phing Sha (beef stew) with Ting Mo (dumpling) $8 lunch special. A generous lunch for the price arrived several minutes later while I was still enjoying my Bocha (salted butter tea, everyone should order this with their Tibetan meals IMO) piping hot and quite likely made to order. The big appeal of Tibetan cuisine for me has been the home style comfort food aspect of it. I still haven't figured out whether it's *supposed* to be spicy but true to the promise of the name, the mung bean "glass noodles" with beef chunks and seaweed in flavorful broth were decidedly picante and went great with the dumplings. And as a place that also served Japanese I like the way ingredients were small and uniformly cut (not the case in tibetan places I've tried, which are usually more rustic style) so maybe even with the segregated menu you could call it "fusion." Indeed, even the optional spicy condiments (hot pepper in vinegar and red hot sauce) come to the tabled all pretty and chilled. I was a little disappointed they didn't have the sweetened wheat dessert I some places do. Usually my dining companion is like "is that a dessert?" and I know where they're coming from but I do like it as, to repeat the phrase, comfort food. It would be interesting to see how this place might refine it a little. One lunch visit isn't enough to a rate a place on but I wrote my notes while eating and then inadvertently pressed "post review" so here we are. One of my favorite joints in the area for some good Tibetan and Japanese food. Definitely get a plate of Shapley. It's one is the best in queens. I'm also a big fan of the Emma Datse, Bhutanese potato and cheese dish with chili. The double fried pork is another one of my favorites. The dragon roll is surprisingly better than some other authentic Japanese joints I've been to. The chef here was previously a five star hotel chef in India so u know ur getting a five star restaurant food for a great bargain. The restaurant is also very clear, nicely decorated and can accommodate large groups. Took my entire team from work here to taste Tibetan for their first time and they all fell on love. Enjoy guys. I came to eat here with my family. We ordered sushi, it was terrible. The eel was over cooked, the avocado was bitter, it wasn't ripe and the rice was mushy. This is just not the place to order sushi. We ordered a seaweed Salad and it was freezing cold. It obviously wasn't fresh, it must have been in the refrigerator for who knows how long.
