Came here for a very late dinner since it's open until 11:00pm on Saturdays. Spicy Shallot's been mentioned a lot in my Queens FB Foodie Group, but maybe it was an off night or we ordered items that aren't their most spectacular. Had the $30 Branzino (didn't realize that it's fried. And that we had a choice between sweet chili sauce, mango salad, cashew cream sauce). The waitress didn't ask which one we wanted. Also had the $18 Crispy Watercress Kung Fu Salad. We were thinking of a duck dish (& I didn't see the Khao Soi - one either softshell crab that I've seen previously), but the couple next to us who's been there twice within the past 2 weeks recommended these two dishes. The salad was lightly battered vegetable, they used Water Spinach instead (big tuber fritters stuck together). The bowl of Seafood Salad (shrimp & calamari, kind of Thai ceviche-style) was OK but didn't have nuances in flavor (spicy sour sweet). The Liquid was deep at the bottom and it was hard spooning things on top of the vegetable. The presentation of the fish was gorgeous - came out on a fish-shaped platter on top of an little flame. The server poured the sauce over the fish and everything bubbled. There was cauliflower and string beans underneath the fish. Didn't realize that it was fried instead of broiled or grilled. We didn't know what sauce we were getting and at first I thought it was tiny bit sour, as I continued eating, it became like a one-note tamarind. Same - there wasn't any sweet sour spicy fishy. We asked for medium-spice when we ordered. It's a little awkard deboning and serving a fried crispy fish on top of a metal platter at a 2-seat table, but my Auntie-skills kicked in and it's no problem for me since I'm familiar with where the bones are. Friend ordered a Thai Coffee also (it might only come iced). The restaurant is beautiful and has a sleek but tropical Asian decor & about 75% full even up to closing. Has a cute outdoor seating area too - a very different vacation feel on a block of Woodside/Elmhurst Queens. Later I come to find out my Queens - born Thai friend said he stopped going to this restaurant after it's renovation and adding sushi to the menu. The ownership changed and he doesn't think it's Thai-owned anymore. Either way, I kind of wish the food met up to the standards of this "Little Thailand" area of NYC. 5 stars based on the duck curry alone! This place put me on to the magical wonders of a Thai duck curry as this was the first place I discovered how magical this item is. I've since tried a multitude of different duck curries and can say ive tried my fair share of them at this point and can easily state this is,hands down, the best duck curry ive tried, and probably the best duck curry in nyc. The duck was incredibly crispy and still tender, the curry itself was rich, but not overbearing and still contained a nice sharp hit of flavors and spices only a Thai red curry could encompass. Came here one night with my family and some extended family and we were seated right away. The restaurant had a dim settling which I think was just because we came pretty late in the day which I enjoyed and it was decorated very nicely. The staff were very accommodating to our large party and the food was delicious! Seriously one of the best Japanese Thai places that I have ever been to! I usually love Thai food and I love Japanese food so when I heard that there was a fusion in woodside, I had to check it out. Everything we got was amazing! I cannot even point out what the highlights are because I believe that everything was sooo good. Everyone on the table enjoyed every dish that we had and we finished almost everything leaving only part of a dish to take to go. Finally got a chance to try spicy shallot despite growing up nearby. My party of 5 arrived at 1pm on a snowy Saturday and there weren't any diners. The restaurant was decorated beautifully with flowers all around. We ordered a Som Tum Tard appetizer along with a Keang Som (crispy whole branzino), duck curry and drunken noodle with tofu. The appetizer was a nice sampler plate with papaya salad, egg, chicken wings, ham, and crispy pork. I enjoyed the variety and the papaya salad the best. The highlight of the meal was definitely the duck curry, which had perfectly crispy skin with a creamy and flavorful curry sauce. The branzino was a bit disappointing since the curry sauce wasn't very spicy and mostly just sour. It was also too watery to be a curry imo. The drunken noodles had good flavors and was very satisfying. We also ordered a pitcher or red sangria that was also great for sharing. I haven't eat here for years and they have some renovation and the restaurant now look nice and more modern. Service is great with very friendly servers and food is pretty quick. - BBQ Beef which is delicious and juicy, love it! - Yum Salmon is good in Thai style of sauce, if you love spicy you should try. - Japanese modern set: It just a regular rolls with nothing special but can feel you up if you are hungry. - Scallops Carpaccio: this menu here I have no idea what went wrong with it. They put too much salt and the sauce is weird. Not crazy at all. I believe most of dishes are delicious from what I ate with a big group of friends last time and I got to try more authentic food. Every dish was delicious and service was so prompt! For a group of 8, we got 3 starters and 4 mains which was more than enough and left with full and very satisfied stomachs. After enjoying the starters, like the fresh and crunchy Papaya Salad, flavorful and chewy Pork Jerky, and soft but crunchy Chive Cakes, we knew the entrees would be good. Of the entrees, I think the Green Curry was my favorite - it had a slight heat that helped balance out the creaminess and often heaviness of the coconut curry base. But I also enjoyed the Drunken Noodles which definitely had a kick but the tofu soaked up all that sauce. We had also gotten Pad Thai which is a sweet and sour classic and the Pineapple Fried Rice. They also have sushi on their menu that we did not try. It seemed most people came for the Thai as well but I'd like to try more things on their menu the next time I come - like the Pork Hock, Calamari, or Fried Branzino. What a treat! read more

My boyfriend talked about this place and wanted to take me during a light snow day. Coming in I was admiring the cute floral decor and the cozy design of the restaurant. We started off with apps which were chicken wings, curry puffs and my boyfriend has some shrimp tempura rolls. The restaurant is clean (including the bathroom) and family friendly. It has a lot of tables and seats to welcome guest, eliminating waiting on line. The staff are professional, helpful, and friendly. They also serve Japanese sushi, sashimi, rolls, and rice bowls. We tried their Drunken Noodle, Thai Fried Rice (with Beef), Coconut Rice Chicken, and Khao Mok Nuea (which reminded me of a Filipino Dish - Beef Pares). Everything was great from plating to taste. Most dishes on the dinner menu is above average, but you won't be disappointed with how much they serve in portions. Also try their drinks/cocktails - very refreshing. Ordered: Lettuce Wrap Ground chicken is very juicy and well seasoned. Toppings on the side can be added as desired. Thai chilis, red onions, lime slices, ginger chunks, and cashews. A personal favorite. I get it nearly every time I come. Thai Iced Tea (jumbo) Perfectly made in my opinion. Not too sweet and a generous portion (approx. 32oz) Lychee Thai Iced Tea (small) Very refreshing. Could get a little sweet after a while if you don't prefer sweet things. Duck Salad (summer dish) Has apples, pineapples, cherry tomatoes, red onions, fried duck, and fish sauce mixture. Fish sauce flavor can be a little overwhelming to those who aren't familiar/don't prefer it. It does have chili powder so it can be a little spicy to those who can't handle spice but for the average consumer should just feel a mild kick. The duck is deep fried so it's a little on the dry side and texturally a little overdone but the sauce helps with that a bit. I would get it again if I were really in the mood for duck. Curry Puff Very soft, flaky, puff pastry shell. Filling is a chicken, potato, curry paste. Flavor isn't as strong as I would have liked but still good. Has the familiar Malaysian red curry flavor. Comes with a celery, apple, fish sauce mixture that's maybe meant to offer a refreshing note to the fried flavors but I personally prefer the curry puff plain. Beef Pad See Ew (no Chinese broccoli) Flavor is fantastic. Perfect amount of salt with just a hint of sweetness. Has the sautéed flame flavor from the wok. Not overly salty or greasy. Beef was thin sliced and flavorful but a little chewy. Didn't get as much egg as I have in the past but still delicious. It usually comes with Chinese broccoli too but I wasn't in the mood today. Crab Meat Fried Rice (no onions) Delicious fried rice. Has the same wok flame flavor that's characteristic of Asian fried rice. Good flavor balance. Not too salty. Very generous portion of crab. Nearly a 1:1 ratio of rice to crab. Comes with a lime wedge and some cucumber slices that I didn't really bother with because it was delicious on its own. Staff is very polite, friendly, and fast. Doing a bit of construction outside so it may be a little confusing to approach and go inside but you can hear the construction while you eat. Natural light during the day provides very nice lighting but it's a little on the darker side indoors otherwise. read more

Whole fried snapper fish with seafood salad and Duck mango apple salad. The fried snapper fish could have some sauce on side, the seafood that came with it was not enough. The Duck dish with mango apple salad, the Duck did not taste fresh, the topping was good. We had Shrimp Mango salad, Crispy Kung fu watercress salad with seafood topping, Som Tum Thai-Papaya salad, Pad See Ew beef, Pad Thai chicken. It's so good, I can't believe it's in my neighborhood. I liked the interior, they have some flower walls for pictures, cute bar, nice vibes. The food was Thai and Japanese fusion, so it was pretty unique. Their reservation system was confusing. All Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were not available for booking, so we called instead and showed up to find them pretty empty. If you're trying to book a reservation, call instead. You might not need it. The service was great, and the waiters were very attentive. First time dining here for a Sunday afternoon lunch/dinner meal with friends who live in the neighborhood. Really nice place. Clean, comfortable, excellent service, delicious food. I started off with the Spicy Señorita, which tasted great and had just the right balance of spice, flavor, and kick. The Crispy Calamari is excellent (better than most restaurants where I've tried it recently); the Curry Puffs OK. Servings were large and filling. I had the Crispy Duck Basil--not as crispy as I prefer but still good, and an order of pahk boong (sautéed Chinese morninglory, which I first ate years ago in Bangkok and love...not always easy to find in NYC). We did not originally plan to come here for dinner but we lost our reservation due to an unexpected situation. Since this neighborhood has so many Thai restaurants, it wasn't hard to find another place. Spicy Shallot has modern decor and a cute sun room/covered patio. It was still chilly at the end of April and they have the heat turned up. The first thing that caught my eye was the cocktails. I forgot to take a picture but I had the Chef's Recommended Spicy Mango Margarita $9 (minus the spicy). It was refreshing and delicious. The second thing was they served Thai and Japanese food. Interesting combination! They have a pretty big menu, but not overwhelming and I appreciate pictures for the popular dishes. We shared the Hors d'oeuvres platter which had a a little bit of everything (chicken wings, fried pork skin, marinated egg, spicy pork, some sort of ham, etc.) and we also shared the Crispy Kung Fu Watercress Salad - the deep fried watercress was very different and really crispy. The calamari was okay in a chili lime sauce with a kick. I really enjoyed my entree, Tamarind Duck - crispy half duck, steamed vegetables, crispy shallots in tamarind reduction sauce. 5 stars for this dish! The sauce was perfection and duck was not fatty. My friends all enjoyed their dishes and I didn't even have a chance to take a picture before they dug in...lol If I find myself in Elmhurst again, I wouldn't mind dining here once more and try other Thai cuisines. read more

I used to order takeout from here a few years ago when one of my friends was living in Queens. I decided it was time to end my dry spell and brought my parents! We came here for their Thai food only and dinner here was good. It's definitely a local neighborhood style restaurant and they have inside seating's as well as outside. The dishes were good but I can't say it was outstanding. The taste was average and the flavor was on point but it didn't pop out like wow. The best dish that night were their drunken noodle. Btw, if you're curious like me with the name of this dish, let e give you a little background. Drunken noodles has no alcohol in it but was named drunken because people use to test their spicy level by getting drunk first before trying these noodles to figure out their spice tolerant. My friends threw me a surprise birthday party here. I found it super popular especially with a reservation. The restaurant doesn't allow you to sit until you have your full party. It was pretty inside. Check out the Instagrammable neon signage. I liked the food. My favorite was the kimchi french fries and the pineapple fried rice. I found this to be a delicious spot! It was a crazy busy night so I loved how they brought out the drinks first and then took appetizers and then came back for the entrees and then desserts. It was so much fun inside. I had a great time chatting and listening to the pop music. The hostess was kind and informed us of our wait. She was able to get us a table of 6. Came back and tried some other dishes. All were delicious! - Salmon Clay Pot Rice: A lot more flavorful than the menu description made it out to be. The teriyaki sauce was very rich, but there was just the right amount of it for the portion of rice and salmon. The rice overall was really oily though, especially the rice sitting at the bottom of the clay pot / pan because of the oil from the salmon fat probably. It wasn't like a stone clay pot, so there were no crispy rice pieces. - Crab meat fried rice: Delicious and relatively light. The crab meat to rice ratio was great. Would recommend and reorder! - Duck Roll: Wouldn't reorder this because didn't think it was worth it. Thought putting the duck pieces on a sushi roll was unnecessary. But I was drawn here when I saw that they had 3 different duck dishes! 10 of us went exploring and we were pleasantly surprised! We can't wait to go back! This is our menu that 5 people shared (see my photos): ~ Crispy Kung Fu Watercress Salad: Excellent!! This is a Must-Have dish! The proteins are served in a separate dish than the crispy watercress, to keep it from getting soggy. When you're ready to eat it, pour the proteins/sauce over the salad, mix and enjoy! ~ Ground Pork in Basil Sauce: tasty but ordinary; still a good dish though. ~ Chicken w.Green Curry: great! Green curry is always my fave. ~ Duck w.Penang Curry: of the 3 duck dishes we tried, this was my fave. The duck was moist, with crispy skin, and the penang curry was fantastic. ~ Duck w.Basil Sauce: 2nd fave duck dish; great flavors. ~ Duck wTamarind Sauce: this duck dish was very disappointing. The duck was dried out & tough, and hardly had any meat on it. Sauce was tasty though. ~ Jasmine Rice: went well with all our dishes; great with the sauces. Service and atmosphere were wonderful! Absolutely satisfied with the takeout orders I have recently placed at Spicy Shallot. The Pad Se Ew and drunken noodle with chicken were absolutely delectable and exceeded my expectations. I appreciate the authentic flavors that the dishes offer, although I must say they are quite spicy so it's something to be mindful of for those with a low tolerance for heat. I had to have my Thai Iced Coffee ($8), which was a staple in college. The Crispy Calamari was delicious although it was a bit chewy. The batter was decent but could have used a bit more seasoning. Overall, an 8/10. The Curry Puff was savory and tasty and I enjoyed it. It was a 9/10. The Basil Belly Pork was yummy but it wasn't as flavorful as other ones I've had. I wish it had more flavor and was a tad bit spicier. It was an 8/10. The Drunken Noodle was also tasty and had good flavor. It was delicious and a 9/10.
