One of my absolute favorite bars. Convenient location on 31st Ave in Astoria. One of the Astoria places that has a surprise large backyard space that you can't see from the street. Great cocktails and bartenders, can bring in outside food (and there is PLENTY of great food walking distance). Someone recently called this a gay bar for straight people, and I have no better way to describe the vibe than that. Diamond Dogs has been a staple since I moved here over a decade ago. A true neighborhood gem that makes Astoria feel like its own special place, because it is. The ultimate combination in my opinion is starting here for drinks, then going next door to Milkflower for a few pies (or ordering to go and eating them at Diamond Dogs). On nice days the backyard is open for additional seating if you're dining al fresco. They do have a happy hour during the week where cocktails are a few bucks cheaper than they normally are, but for what you're getting I feel like these cocktails are decently priced. The bartenders here are true mixologists, Pat makes the best Times of Grace in my opinion. If you're not big into cocktails they also have a solid beer offering here, so something for everyone. This place does get packed on the weekends, so be aware of that if you're going here wanting to definitely have a seat or some breathing room. read more

Good beer, good happy hour, nice backyard. Would be 5 stars if not for all the smokers in the backyard. In theory there were smoking and non-smoking sections, in practice there were people chain smoking at both ends of the yard and it was hard to escape. I suppose the smokers need their spots too, so if that's your jam this is for you, but if I had known I would have gone elsewhere. If I went back it would only be at a quieter time to avoid this. read more

You may have difficulty finding Diamond Dogs, as there's no signage and it's got black curtains by the front, but just look for the block number and head in! Inside, you'll find such a chill little bar with the greatest outdoor patio farther back. I hung out there with a group of about ten and we got there around 5pm to lock down a table for a few hours. It gets busy, so if you're a big group, plan accordingly! And if the forecast predicts rain, head for the table with the umbrella! Bar atmosphere, but kid-friendly! The bartenders are super friendly and chill. John kept coming out to clean up our table and even share some of our snacks! Of course, the big benefit is BYOF. The bar doesn't have food itself. So get some food for the gang and relax, because if you can't do that here, you can't do that anywhere! read more

I'm not sure you can find a place like diamond dogs in manhattan. My friend hosted a bday party here on a Friday night and it was perfect. The indoor bar area was spacious, and it was crowded but not packed. The back patio had a relaxed vibe with multiple tables, benches, and chairs. There was great lighting too. There were 2 kind bartenders serving drinks and oddly all the bar staff were wearing fernet shirts so naturally I had a fernet sour. Favorite drink of the night! All cocktails and were $12, and the bar served PBR which is a classic. When i closed my tab at the end of the night, the bartender told me comped one of my drinks! It was a great night. read more

I've always been curious about the unmarked, dimly-lit bar that is Diamond Dogs. We came here last night and it was quite packed. They had an outdoor space but it was just a little bit too cold to sit outside last night. Thankfully the tables were turning over fast enough. They have happy hour until 8 which we just made! They have a speakeasy vibe but they're a little too easy to find. They're also a bit more affordable. I'd classify them more as a "subtle dive bar." They don't serve food but they allow you bring it in. Since we were on a hot apple cider theme last night, we ordered the spiced one that they offered. It was delicious, and very spicy! I'm not sick but I'm sure I knocked out whatever preliminary germs I may have had. They offer an array of cocktails and draft brews. I would definitely like to return when it's a little more quiet so I can absorb the dark ambiance a bit better. I'm glad I can finally remove Diamond Dogs from my bookmarks now. read more

Cool bar in Queens with a great selection of local beers on tap / and in bottles. Open late so you can wet your whistle well into the night. Dark, woody environment with a decent amount of sitting/ standing area even for NYC standards. Service here is excellent - don't recall having to ask for my glass to be refilled. read more

I'm a huge Bowie fan and I have been going to Diamond Dogs ever since they opened. I love the bartenders here and the inventive cocktails. I particularly enjoy the silk kimono but they also have fun seasonal drinks, like the frozen "peni-chillin". You can bring your own food as well, and I highly recommend grabbing a pie from Milkflower next door and enjoy with a stiff mixed drink. They have a well-stocked bar with fine whiskey, gin, and more exotic spirits so you can always ask for something custom and they are more than happy to oblige. They just want people to come and enjoy hanging out at a local spot sipping on whatever they like, no judgment. Plus, for Dry January, they always have a warm crock pot of non-alcoholic apple cider. While the name Diamond Dogs will always remind me first of David Bowie, it is also the name of an unassuming bar on 31st ave of almost 3 years young. This place makes great cocktails, has a nice beer selection, including the local brewery SingleCut and is BYOF. Yes, you read it right: Great booze and Bring Your Own Food! Without much signage, Diamond Dogs is a dim, low key bar with casual seating and backyard access. One of the bartenders was actually the owner himself, Nick, who was amicable and welcomed us being first timers at the bar. We tried a few of their cocktails and they are solid and well crafted, which were nicely priced around $10-13 each. Holy Mountain, made with rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, walnut bitters and becherovka (a herbal bitter/liquor) reminded me of an Old Fashion. The Neighborhood Threat, a mescal cocktail with lemon, pineapple, cardamon bitter and demerara syrup (turbinado sugar) was very interesting. The cardamon bitter was quite memorable since it made the drink herbal and a kick of spices for me. There are very few excuses to not check this place out if you are in the neighborhood. 4.25 stars read more

However, after telling my friend visiting from Chicago that I'd never seen this place before and the sign out front that said BYO-Food ("BYO-Food, hahaha. Let's check this place out.") We walked into a pretty nice new bar. The place had that 'newly opened' smell and you could tell with a bar that wasn't even broken in yet. The beer list is a good size and pretty well organized so we all got beers-which during happy hour made it pretty affordable. We sat outside in their huge back space and drank and then went inside and drank; both of the experiences were great and it was nice to be in a just a nice laid back, hole in the wall, neighborhood type place. Diamond Dogs is a quality cocktail bar with a neighborhood feel and a charming back patio space that is painted all white and replete with strands of lights. Perfect for those fleeting few months in which New Yorkers can actually enjoy outdoor spaces (I am already mourning you, summer). We visited on a Saturday night, and the vibe was pretty lively with an eclectic crowd. I tried three cocktails, which were super reasonably priced at $10-11: -Serious Moonlight: (pisco, Green Chartreuse, lemon, honey, egg white, Bitterman's Burlesque bitters): The Chartreuse and Burlesque bitters add a floral touch to a pisco sour. It wasn't my favorite drink of the night, but it was balanced and understated, and who doesn't like a pisco sour-type beverage? -Boulevardier (bourbon, Campari, sweet vermouth): I had heard of this classic cocktail but had shied away from it because my tastebuds are sensitive to the extremely bitter Campari. I'm really glad that I finally tried it, because although it was quite bitter for me, the excellent bourbon and the sweetness of the vermouth tempered that bitterness. All of the ingredients were obviously top-notch and it was overall an enjoyable, bad-ass sort of cocktail. -Sister Nancy (rum, all spice liqueur, amaro, lime, pineapple, passion fruit syrup): I don't know Sister Nancy, but she seems delicious. This is a go-to type of cocktail for all spice liqueur, but I thought this version was particularly good and well-rounded. There is such a depth of sumptuous flavors here that is hard to describe; the closest thing I can think of is like a sweet version of umami. "Sweet umami", maybe. The guys behind the bar are really nice. I had a quick discussion about the bitterness of the Boulevardier with one of them and he offered to make me something else if I didn't like it. While that ultimately wasn't necessary, it was a nice gesture. read more

Nice spot! The interior is cute and comfortable with some nice mood lighting, patio area is basic. Just tables over a bunch of rocks nothing too amazing. They had the cider I wanted, and their cocktails were delicious as well. I've gone twice and had the same bartender, he seemed kind of miserable to be there and wasn't the most friendly guy, but at least he wasn't an asshole I guess. I'd probably come back. read more

Every time I come here, it's too loud and crowded. Brick walls don't generally make for great acoustics, but Diamond Dogs worsens the experience by blaring music at full volume. I live really close to this speakeasy-ish bar and my first visit was during their first week of being open. I really love their interior look and feel. Their wallpaper has a classy vintage pattern, they have some neat artwork on the walls adorning the actual bar and their light fixtures...GOD, I AM OBSESSED WITH THEIR LIGHT FIXTURES. Other things that make Diamond Dogs a sweet, sweet neighborhood bar is their awesome outdoor space. Their backyard is well maintained, cleaned and stocked with tables and seats for small-medium sized groups and coupley couples alike. The beer list here is pretty good...but not stellar. I think their menu rotates, but my last couple of trips I've seen the same beers. I look forward to the fall though...it IS after all the season of craft beer lovin' champions. They're also BYOF (Bring your own food) which is awesome considering that they are nestled in a mecca of really fantastic food options. I've even called for delivery from their bar counter. The bartenders here also all super friendly, efficient and fun to chat with (shout out to Dustin!). My boyfriend and I have had several conversations with the owner here as well and they've spoken about some creative/filmmaking projects n' stuff. They also don't blast crazy music but more mature tunes at a volume that actually promotes communication amongst adults and not bro-ey bros. Neato. Prices here are decent. Their cocktails are $10 and beers are $7-8...but again, they have a pretty good craft beer selection and their cocktails are fantastic. I REALLY should have taken a photo of the cocktail menu last night because I don't remember any of them today (damn you forty year old brain!). I do remember loving all of them though and for $11 per drink, they have some really good cocktails. My first drink was their one and only mezcal drink with cardamom bitters and a bunch of other stuff. I THINK it was called "The Neighborhood Boy". Loved it. I also tried both their tequila cocktails. They are one of the very few tequila cocktails I have had where I didn't actually taste the agave - which is not as easy task to pull off, and they did it without making the drink weak. One of the tequila cocktails (the one with Campari in it) would make for an excellent summer time drink. Neither my wife nor I like Campari but it was subtle in this drink because the Citrus took center stage. I also had a sip of my friend's rye cocktail which was very similar to an old fashioned and mixed very well. The diversity of their bitters was very impressive. We loved the low key set up and best of all, it was BYOF. Yep - bring your own food. So there we were having our cocktails while wolfing down some shrimp mei fun that we got from a nearby Chinese joint. Could not have worked out better. read more
