Great local neighborhood bar. There's a lot of space inside but it can still get crowded in the bar area. The drink prices are very reasonable and they have a good liquor selection variety. Never had a bad time here. It's a solid Irish bar with your classic extra large wooden bar, plus a few tables in back and games like darts. No food at this place, but you can bring in whatever you want, and they have snacks for purchase if you just want a little something to snack on. The bartenders here are always friendly and prompt. Prices are on par with what you can expect in the neighborhood. I came here for trivia on Halloween, and it was one of the most fun trivia nights I've been to in Astoria. You have to pay to play ($10 per team), but it keeps things interesting that you could win actual money if you're smarter than everyone in the room. The night I was there I believe the pot was just under $200. The team that comes in second to last gets free shots, which my team won! Weird to say this but this is probably one of the best bars to come drink alone at. You won't be really alone. read more

Pleasantly surprised with the Irish Rover. I've passed this place a bunch of times and it always struck me as a dive to not go into. I think my buddy told me that this was like the first place he ever had a drink when he was way younger. But same person I was cat sitting at him and his wife's place down the block the other weekend. I wanted to watch the Lions on Sunday. Usually this becomes a huge ordeal for me in New York. I thought about the Local because I like their beer menu but I don't think they have too many tvs. Decided to give this a shot. Asked the bartender that was Irish if he could turn on the game and he asked which tv! Oh happy day. Typically the reaction I get is either 'get out of my bar'. Or if it's a female she will scrunch up her face and ask who the Lions are and 'ohhhh . . . . good heavens no we can't do that'. They have a bunch of tvs though and are pretty great with distributing whatever and saving the big screen for your precious giants or jets. Beers were cheap-ish and around $4-5. A few craft beers in addition to your typical finds. Everyone here was super friendly and laid back enough that random strangers would share your table with you. It was never at any point too crowded which is a miracle and godsend. You can also bring in outside food since they don't have a kitchen. read more

The BEST bar, PERIOD. Maria, our bartender, was amazing, attentive, and fun. I went there with a character of a coworker (who looks and acts exactly like Samuel L. Jackson). He had never had a Guinness in his life. Needlesstosay, we had 18 pints of Guinness that afternoon. I felt bad for him, every pint of Guinness from here on out would be a letdown because this is as good as it gets. We would be around halfway done with our current pint when she would start pouring our next one. No one in the entire bar was ever waiting on a drink. Samuel started ragging on Maria about her "watered-down drinks." Baaaaad move for our livers and overall well-being. This provoked her to give us 3 free rounds of Jamison shots, claiming, "if you don't leave here drunk, I'm not doing my job," in a cute Irish accent. Ugh, I fell in love with another foreign bartender. Cheap, cheap, cheap. I highly recommend ordering out to Rizzo's pizza, which was an perfect complement to the drinks. This is the kind of place I would travel well out of my way for. Heck, I would make all my friends hike here too. This is the kind of place that makes me consider living in this neighborhood. Maybe I just had a particularly bad experience but... I shan't be coming back. The beer selection is entirely negligent, the guy who was their bartender-announced regular spent my entire time there drunkenly "conversing" with my 3 female friends and I (and by "conversing" I mean drunkenly spitting and mumbling in our faces, and touching us in ways we'd not granted permission to, and repeatedly asking why if we were single, etc.). I was even told by multiple patrons (who are regulars themselves) that this guy is there most nights in that condition, and they are humored by it. Again, maybe I chose a bad night, but I felt pretty uncomfortable the whole time. I didn't appreciate the vibe of the place even with this guy out of the equation. It's a place to go if you want to drink standard pilsner and watch a football game. If you want to have good beer with friends, good conversation, and not be hit on by self-entitled strangers, try another spot. read more

Fantastic! We were just here and I have to say...this now is on my list as well. We stumbled into this place by "Luck" My friend J parked his car around my house ( which is about 10 blocks away)..and we both had some time to kill between. We wanted to have a couple of beer and couldn't find convenient parking spots for other bar we go to. ....so ..we .simply went to the bar that is closest from where we park. . As I always say..it is the "BARTENDER" who makes all the differences in the world for bar.......and Mike is just that bartender. I had my usual Guinness .....and had to order "whatever shot you make" from him....... ...and ta da.... Mike made perfect drinks...for both of us. We luuuuuuuuuuufffed it ! If we didn't have to leave for our next engagement....we would have stayed there for the rest of night for sure. We will definitely be back....! Cheap drinks, 3rd round buybacks, chill crowd, and friendly bartenders who remember your drink order even on a packed Saturday night = one of my favorite places to go out in Astoria. I prefer a good, small Irish pub over a trendy, hip, overpriced place any day. The only thing keeping me from it 5 stars is how crowded it's become. When I first started coming in last summer, it was super busy Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, as expected, but now it's packed every night after about 9 or 10. I'm an 80 year-old man and would like to actually sit down and have a conversation over drinks, but it's gotten very loud and crowded here. Still, I come in whenever it's not too busy because I love the atmosphere so much! P.S. They accept credit cards, but there's a $15 minimum. So if you're using a card, prepare to get sloshed, because that's four drinks. read more

For some reason, I keep reading this place as Irish Rogue. Why? I don't have a clue. But that's not important. What is important is that this is a good, solid bar. Although the Guinness I tasted couldn't match the ones from my favorite neighborhood joint, the cleanliness, efficiency, and warm atmosphere of the bartenders made this place a good find. The drinks weren't expensive (avg. $5/beer) and they made decent cocktails too. For a Thursday evening, it wasn't very busy which was good because we were able to play a few rounds of darts and Buck Hunter (both of which I am awful at). So bottom line...if you're in the area, this is a good drinking joint. Especially if you live nearby because this was good find. read more

Well I couldn't believe my luck when I moved to Astoria. This place is around 1 block from my apartment and is everything an Irish pub should be. Bartenders are friendly (and actually Irish), buy backs on the 3rd drink, plenty TVs and a decent jukebox. They always seems to have the temperature just right as well. I'm Scottish so was delighted to see a good selection of whiskys and well as beer on tap. Everyone is friendly and they show the soccer on weekends as well as baseball, football etc! Honestly, I'm not over impressed by this place: sure, it's nice and all, clean, whatever. Not filled with douches like a lot of bars are, so that's nice. But I go to a bar to drink, and I'm not overly impressed with their selection of drinks. Admittedly, I didn't take inventory of their liquors, but I only saw 2-3 of each kind of liquor, and maybe 5-7 standard beers on tap--maybe more, I don't remember. But, it does have some nice things going for it: its got a fairly relaxing atmosphere, a TV or two, clean bathrooms, blah blah blah. But then you meet and talk to the bartenders, and you're like "oh hell to the yeah!" Then you get your third drink on the house and you're like "oh fuck yes!!" Then you're walking out with a buzz and a small bar bill and you're like "I'm getting my ass back here more often." Definitely a case of people over pints here, and sometimes, particularly in a bar with no gimmick, that's exactly what you need. read more

Great neighborhood bar. Love this place. The bartenders are always fun and they're pretty funny also. One of the few bars that give buybacks. I never say no when someone asks me to join then at the Rover. The place is small inside, has a dart board and few televisions along with a projector screen that usually shows the hot sporting event for the night. I come here for the atmosphere and the Bartenders really are the best. I can't remember their names but I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. It's a local bar and the drinks are cheap. One bartender in particular always stands out. He's tall and slim. That's all I can remember but he's an awesome guy. read more

Irish Rover is a pretty chill irish pub. Dart boards, several tvs tuned to sports. Its a little loud (suck it up, its a pub) and there is no food served here (grab some cart or tacos a few blocks down). The crowd was actually rather diverse. I feel like the youngsters moving into astoria now know of the place but people across all age groups were having a good time and intermingling. But it is still a pretty nice place. They have a pretty great buy back policy (if you know about the policy), but 2 get the 3rd free. For $6 for a black and tan (mixed by the bartender) I'm pretty happy about the pricing. So come, grab your drinks in threes and have a nice brew while watching the knicks, nets and mets suck. read more

I'm not a regular here by any means but I hit it a few times a year. It's a good Irish bar that's no frills and makes no apologies. The bartenders, once you get to know them a bit, are friendly and always have some good conversation there. Drinks are basic and good and reasonably priced. They'll buy you back too which is nice since that seems to be an unheard of practice in Manhattan. They play lots of sports here that you may not get in other bars like soccer, rugby, and hurling. If you like this stuff you will like this bar. I've never seen any trouble in there and the crowd is pretty even keel. This is not by any means a scene of "the beautiful people" you may find in other bars however you are not there for that and you certainly aren't paying for it. I was visiting some friends in New York who wanted to hit up the Astoria Skate Park over the weekend. Not being much of a skater myself I decided to wander the neighborhood and see if I could find a bar to catch some football. The Irish Rover was highly recommended on Yelp!, and I can see why. It had a bunch of TVs for watching sports, a good selection of beer and liquor, and what seemed to be a dedicated group of neighborhood folks hanging out watching the Jets (among others). It definitely seems like it's got a comfortable - even cozy - neighborhood vibe. A little small compared to a normal suburban sports bar, but about the same size or even larger than hipster bars in Manhattan or Williamsburg. I only had one beer and then left, so I'm not sure about the availability or quality of any food. While I'm not sure if I'll ever find myself in Astoria again, I know if I do at least there's a good place for me to go watch sporting events. (oh yeah, and Yankees Suck!) read more

The only downside of this bar is it's distance from the subway. It's easy to get to by bus by the Q18 but a little bit of a hike or very one else. The Sam Adams summer was bad, probably because it's close to Oktoberfest season, I won't fault them for that. The ATM has a $3 surcharge and try dot accept Amex. They have a lot of huge TVs and an AMI jukebox. The bathrooms are clean and they have a dart board. read more
