Had a good time here. They have darts in the back and the prices are great. They have two separate bathrooms. You can tell there is a lot of locations at this spot. I completely forgot how to play darts! It was fun to throw sharp items at a wall I won't lie about that. I appreciate how the noise level is chill. Free darts is always fun. They have karokee at this location which looks like one. Its a good spot to come with a group. I definitely recommend this place to you if youre around. Was looking for a nice cozy bar while visiting Astoria and The Local was perfect for a relaxing hang out with delicious beer. Got there when it opened and it was quiet, sat at the bar and had a couple of half pours of beer. The bartender was really helpful and kind, and we liked it so much that after dinner with friends and family, we all came back to have another drink! I held off writing a review for this place for so long because I almost wanted to keep this place for my husband and myself, but I'd like to support this place by giving a great review. My husband and I found this place nearby when we moved to Astoria a few years ago, intrigued by the one front sign you can see from the side (so you just read "BAR" and nothing else). From day one, this has been our local go-to bar. Bartenders are always so nice and friendly. I love that while they do understandably play a lot of sports on tv, they will also play things like the Oscars - with the sound on too! Nice little outdoor sitting area. Good variety of beers. We had the VFW in Astoria booked for a celebration of life for my mom and brother. We waited and waited and no one showed up to let us in. A crowd began to gather and still no word from the VFW. My wife and sister searched the area and stumbled up The Local. They explained our situation and the bartender was more than accommodating. We were able to use the outside area which was quite spacious and bring our own food!!! All they asked was that we bought some drinks(which were amazing!!!) Cool little local bar in Astoria. Venue is kind of L-shaped. Discovered this because they had Karaoke and you couldn't see the performers because they were around the corner. Very long bar with plenty of seating and lots of draft options to choose from, including local brews and favorites. Full bar with any mixed drink option you can concoct. Kind of loud but typical of a local bar doing sing alongs and Karaoke. Staff was friendly and on top of drinks. read more

Found this bar through Yelp. Don't really live in this part of Astoria but figured I was bored with the ones I always go to so wanted to try some place new. Conveniently located on 31st Ave and 41st Street (one block off Steinway). Right when you walk in there's a chalk board on the left to show you all the beers on tap. It's a long bar with 3 large TVs. At the back there's a few dart boards. Jason was our bartender for the night. He is an awesome bartender. Some customers weren't sure about some of the local beers offered and he was glad to give them samples to try it out before committing to the whole glass. Whenever the bar didn't offer the drink that the customer was requesting, he would think outside the box and try to make or give you something in similar taste. My boyfriend wanted an old fashioned and Jason told us he didn't have 2 of the ingredients (sugar cubes and bitters, I think it was). But he said he could make something else close to it. My boyfriend tried it and he loved it. He let us know that they have late night karaoke on Friday nights (10:30pm starting time) and Thursday nights they have a live band that sets up in the back. I went on a Wednesday night and was surprised to see how many people came in throughout the night. Not packed but all the bar stools taken and a few of the side tables taken as well. read more

So years ago I walked into this bar with my beau and asked the bartender what were some of the best beers they had on tap...her response was Blue Moon was their craft beer. I felt a knot form in my stomach and instead of correcting her I simply nodded and said we would each take one. It was late and we wanted a nightcap. It was also skunked. It was a skunked Blue Moon and being toted as a craft beer. My beer loving soul was sad - we consumed what we could and left. I vowed to not return. About 2 years later my friend Ingrid S. and I were walking by during this 2016's really bad January snow storm. My face was literally in a state of hurt - as if 872 needles were being inserted into my numb face at one. Snow is powerful like that man. I turned to her and in a high-pitched tone said I needed to enter a place with a roof to warm up before we continued our journey to a friend's house where I was throwing a surprise birthday party. I walked in here expecting to hopefully drink something decent. My eyes glazed over their (BRAND SPANKING NEW!!!) craft beer list and tears pooled in my eyes (which later turned into ice, lol) because it was such a beautiful list. IPAs, Milk Stouts, Porters, Cream Ales - it was beautiful, all reasonably priced and I vowed I would be back again (and again, and again, and again!). I've now been back a handful of times since this fateful snowy afternoon when I learned that they were now under new management, serving a very nicely curated list of craft beers (both local and a little less local), free popcorn and FREE KARAOKE on Fridays which I stumbled onto by mistake and have now enjoyed on multiple occasions. There is also a nice, small-ish outdoor patio in the back and lots of ample seating in the back (indoors) for larger groups who want to have their own little area by the darts board. This bar is the epitome of fun, quality beers and fun clientele! Shout out to Devon, the karaoke guy and one of the owners who is a musician and who my friends and I broke day with awhile back for a friend's birthday. I love this bar so, so, so much. read more

This is totally unassuming to be a fantastic craft beer bar. . . . . but it exceeds all expectations! For awhile now this had been known as the crap dive sports bar across the street from DiWine. My friend and partner in crime Steph P. insisted that the only beers they had on tap were Guinness and Blue Moon and she had stumbled in there with her man one day. They were nice people but not a place she would seek to come back to. Which is why we avoided bothering to go inside until as of late. Insert epic blizzard of 2016 back in January. We were trying to get to both a grocery store and someone's apartment for a surprise party and couldn't see in front of us or feel our faces. Mascara was running down my face to a clown show extent and we both decided you know. . . . . that blue moon or guinness doesn't sound all too bad right about now. We popped inside and our jaws dropped when we looked at their chalkboard menu. So many porters, stouts, ipas, saisons, sours, browns, ales of different and notable breweries. Some beers I had never heard of before. . . . . . what happened?! When its not happy hour everything is $6-7 which is a pretty fair price. When it is happy hour, don't quote me on this, but I think everything is $5. They have karaoke late on friday night. We accidentally recently stumbled upon this and did not sing Ricky Martin like dying cats. They have darts in the back. Also free popcorn. ALSO, they have a byob on sunday. No, not beer. Get your head out of the gutter. This is a bar. It's bring your own brunch! Bring in your food and imbibe in $4 brunch cocktails or you know, just drink some more craft beer. This was a first from our Queens Beer book. Even though the place was dead on Sunday and employees order food to be delivered into the establishment. At that point we just finished our free beers and moved on to a next location that would offer food. Good choices of beers and being that they were free it couldn't get better. Came in on a bustling Friday night and was looking for a neighborhood bar as I heard Astoria friendly places to drink. Being from Los Angeles I was expecting a local crowd with a friendly vibe however to my surprise I found that the place had maybe one or two people in it with karaoke going on in the background and was totally caught off guard because the reviews were so great. Service was fast. The bar itself was pretty spacious and I feel that there could have been a lot more potential for a good time at a place like this. Bought ourselves two rounds of vodka and redbull however no one was trickling in and the hopes of an awesome Friday night at a high rated bar kind of went down the drain a little bit disappointed but great service nonetheless. read more

Why give it more than 2 stars. Watering hole yes, cheap prices yes, dark an outdated yes. The bartender gossips like a church lady, Washington DC political conversations in Astoria, WOW!!!!!! The patrons are corny, had a guy buy them shots and when he left they called him an asshole. You get a buffet of food, burnt popcorn!!!! This place left a bad taste in my mouth. Like most watering holes in Astoria it is dependent on the bar tender. A great one can grow and evolve the establishment while a bad one sucks it dry. You know it is a good time when the bartender can not keep up with the demand due to their popularity. Personality is what we pay for at a bar, otherwise we could drink at home like true alcoholics. A bad bar tender can ruin the mood and empty the seats, my last experience felt like I was in a desolate far away human-less apocalypse. This is definitely a hole in the wall kind of bar. I like my share of hole in the wall bars, but was not that impressed with this one. I was excited about the craft beer selection, but not so excited when it took me ten minutes to get my beer when it was not really that busy. Well it took me like five minutes to get my beer and then another five to get my change. We then took a seat on the outside deck which I thought was nice. That is until a number of people walked out back and started smoking. The no smoking sign posted on the wall didn't seem to stop them. Nor did the staff who obviously knew they were smoking. I then noticed the large stand up ash tray by the door. hmmm. so there is a no smoking sign, but they will provide you with an ash tray for those cigarettes that you can't smoke. Where do I start?... I had the pleasure of being introduced to the Local by my girlfriend's roomie when looking for a location to throw a surprise birthday party. The bar is located slightly off of the beaten path, but I like that. The name is fitting as it does appeal to people who live in the area, but don't want to deal w Steinway/Broadway/30th ave. The space - since they've recently opened just about 2 months ago, the place is super clean and fresh. The stools, paint, and bar itself are clear indicators. This is what actually sold me on throwing the party there. Service - one of the owners, Stacey, was VERY accomodating to my needs allowing us to have a dj, bring in catered food (there's no kitchen), decorate, and hold the ice cream cake in their fridge. She was eager to please the customers needs and did so without a speed bump. Thank you Stacey. The bartenders were wonderful as well. The girl who was there for the first shift (sorry forgot your name) lent a hand in decorating, and was very welcoming. The bartender serving the party shift was quick, friendly, and really went the extra mile for her customers. I gave her a tray of food, and she gave some to her regular customers which was a very nice gesture. Even the bar back did what he could to help everyone out. Solid. Overall, the Local won me over. I absolutely love this place! Jason, Chris, and Devon are all awesome bartenders and very attentive. The drinks are good and cheap what more could you ask for ?! The local does karaoke on Friday nights and they literally have any and every song you would want to sing. The backyard area is so cute and cozy, and they even have a TV out there so you won't miss the game. If you are nice about it and request to put a specific game on they will do it for you ! This place was a surprisingly awesome find. I've walked past it coming from the subway for weeks and decided to give it a shot with my husband and a couple friends. I have to say it's our new favorite. The music is great and kept at a reasonable volume - you can still have a conversation without shouting, there are 2 dart boards if you're like me and like to be active while tying one on, and there is an outdoor space in the back with tables. No food served but they let you bring food in and they serve popcorn and bar snacks if you're just munchy. I even met the owner who was bartending and he's a fantastic guy. I like this spot, never too busy and it definitely feels like the local watering hole. The variety on draft is pretty good, but almost every time I've been there they've been out of something I wanted to order plus their online menu isn't frequently updated anymore, which is a bummer. The bartenders are also all very friendly, but often can't hear what you say because of the volume of the music. The nights they have live bands are even worse with not so great music playing obscenely loud. I like their prices and drink specials, which is why I keep going back, but not really a bar I would go out of my way to visit. read more

The local is a great bar! Excellent craft beer selection, lots of large TV's, complimentary popcorn, outdoor seating, and the bartenders are all very friendly! The beers are always changing which is nice, and the bartenders will let you try samples of any of the draft beers. No kitchen, so the complimentary popcorn is a nice option!
