The only downside of this bar is it's distance from the subway. It's easy to get to by bus by the Q18 but a little bit of a hike or very one else. The Sam Adams summer was bad, probably because it's close to Oktoberfest season, I won't fault them for that. The ATM has a $3 surcharge and try dot accept Amex. Best place to grab a drink in Astoria! We stumbled on is place while on vacation last year and knew we had to make a return trip. What can I say about this place that hasn't already been said. Stopped by here one night to catch an NBA playoffs game, seems like an alright place with average priced beers, maybe a little expensive for its location even. They have two dart boards, though only one of them seemed to be operational at the time I went. They also have the newest Golden Tee Live there, which is a huge plus in my book (without that and the darts this bar would kinda suck). Problem is we wanted to play a game of darts after we drank our first beer. Were about to play when a rowdy group of three obviously tanked guys decided to play, fine whatever, will play after them. However after asking if we could get the next game they continued to not play, eat chips, guzzle beers, arm wrestle and annoy everyone in the bar. My problem is these guys were out of controla and unruly to the point they would want to fight someone if you said that they should give up the dart board. The bar had plenty of staff including guys there that could have dispatched of this problem, however, it seemed like they decided to ignore it which was disappointing. We ended up staying to watch nearly the end of the game and these guys were STILL on the dartboard, I'm talking like three hours later, it was ridiculous. I love playing darts and this place has two steel tip boards. One of them, however has no ochey, and the other one was taken. That is minus 1 star. The first and only time I went there the beer was flat. I ordered something different thinking it might just be that beer, and it was still flat. This is why I took off another star. Once, when I went here, there was a rugby team celebrating a win. Another time when I went here, I poured $5 into the jukebox and went to town. This other time, there was a one-man band who was INCREDIBLE (still trying to figure out what his name was.) And once? This place is solid. Here's why: 1. It's an "old man" bar, but really nice, like where your classy grandpa would have a pint and kill some time. 2. Friendly bartenders. I called to ask if they were showing a particular game one afternoon and I was told they were. This place is pretty solid. And I like that they have Anchor Steam on tap, but I've never had an amazing time here. I think there are several reasons why this place is just OK. The bartenders are generally attentive, there is a dart board in the back, and it's just a nice place to chill out in a decently lively bar. But it's like a neighborhood bar. And I live in the neighborhood, but I don't think about coming to this place for a drink unfortunately. The last time I was there I was put off by the accusation I ordered something else over my actual order and was given a pretty unfriendly stare for it. A casual, local place with a laid back crowd. I think as long as you don't go into the Rover with expectations of a having a hundred luxury, imported beers to choose from, you'll be fine. It's really your typical Irish pub, which is nice to have in an area that's gentrifying pretty rapidly. I couldn't think of anything wrong with the experiences I've had there, though it can get crowded on weekend nights. And of course, you're at the mercy of the crowd when it comes to what's playing on the juke box! I really wanted to give the Rover a 3.5, for atmosphere, beer selection, crowd, etc...but the last time I was there, full after a huge dinner, I asked the bartender for a straw to drink my beer with, and he actually gave me one. My brother and I used to go to this place and get our 2 beers and then the buyback. I thought it was the best bar in town...including Manhattan and the other Burroughs. I spent tons of money in other bars but never did they do a buyback. We would put 20 bucks in the jukebox and have music for hours. I don't live in NYC, anymore, and I miss the hell out of it and this place. My daughter came to visit for NY and she and her friends went to Times Square. No offense to the people who are into this place but there is absolutely nothing special about it. I live around the corner from an Irish pub that is almost identical to this one, and you don't see me raving about it and giving it 5 stars just because it exists and you're too lazy to go to Manhattan. I ended up at the Irish Rover over the weekend because the beer garden was having some kind of event with a $10 cover. I used my Yelp iPhone App and this place got such crazy good reviews that I figured it'd be worth a try. It is just a regular bar on a street with absolutely nothing on it. Beers are reasonable at $4.50 or $5 a pint but I wouldn't go on and on about how cheap it is. There were plenty of tables, the bathroom was clean, and the bartender was nice. Darts and huge TV screens. But really only worth it for people who live in a 3 block vicinity and not at all worth a schlep from another borough. I was embarrassed (though able to blame it on Yelpers!!) because I had friends coming to Astoria from Manhattan and Brooklyn and this was not anything special. Great sports bar on 28th av, might be packed on most nights when there are big games going on. Good selection of beers, haven't tried their food. I have to thank my fair Yelpers for helping me find this place. I had no idea it existed until I searched "cheap bars in Astoria". Irish Rover popped up and after reading the fabulous reviews, I knew I had to make the trek over there. I went on a Thursday night with two of my girlfriends, expecting a diverse crowd and cheap drinks. I was pleasantly surprised by the inside of the bar...it was warm, inviting, and "airy". The juke box was humming in the back and small groups were huddle together at their respective tables. It was pretty empty so we found seats quite easily. The bartender was incredibly nice and the drinks were suppperrrrr cheap. The buy-back every third drink? Absolutely amazing. I've never even heard of that, especially in an NYC bar. Way to go, Irish Rover! I hope to go on a Friday or Saturday night next time so I can see a bigger crowd. This bar is the perfect place for a 'chill' night with your friends...or a perfect place to get really drunk, really cheaply. Whatever suits your fancy. read more

Friendly bartenders, stage for live band, Cheap prices I'm really glad to have found Yelp.com, because I would have never found this bar by myself. Its not on the main streets (31st St, 30th Ave, Steinway, or Ditmars Ave), but that's what makes it such a gem. I went there with my friends for 2007 New Years Eve celebrations and we had a lot of fun. The bartender was really friendly, I had no problem getting his attention every time I was by the bar to get drinks (and I did that at least 5 times), and he had no problem understanding my orders even over the loud music. The place wasn't too pack when we got there at around 10 pm. But it became pretty packed within the hour. I was really surprised that they had a live band, which wasn't mentioned here, but that really made it even better. The band played a variety of music from Elvis to 3 Doors Down. They were quite good, getting the audience in to it and even had a girl get on the stage to dance. Meanwhile, a bar staff was handing out a bunch of different party favors (hats, whistles, noisemakers) to get everybody really into a holiday mood. We wanted to stay til 1 PM but end up leaving closer to 2 PM because we had so much fun. I closed out my tab and it came out only to $76 for like 10 guiness (not sure about guiness, we ordered a lot), 2 smithwicks, 1 blue moon, 2 mix drinks, and 6 Jameson shots. I would be lucky to get 1/2 of that order in a Manhattan bar for that price. read more

i finally made my way the irish rover pub as its my cuz local hangout to watch the games and drink a few beers but its only outdoor seating due to covid 19 and i must say rover and staff have set up a safe social d . outdoor seating space that many folks can enjoy on another hot astoria evening . full bar offerings and good variety of bottle beers , food menu is simple , pizza, pretzels , chips /salsa and one of each please with a coors light which the kind lady server brought over in a snap. looking foward when we can go in as interior is old school with wooden bar , a few side tables , dart board and plenty of tvs overhead for sports viewing . the crowd is civil and on sound level 3 which is totally the opposite of the steinway which is semi civil and on sound level 8. a good place to grab a drink and chill for a while and i look foward when indoor seating is available as the place look fun to hang out at. read more

How can I say a bad thing about quite possibly the coolest neighborhood bar I've ever been to in my short 21 year old life? This is the kind of place I want to stick in my pocket and take with me everywhere I go for the rest of my life. There might not be that many attractive women who frequent the Rover, but whatever. Televisions are everywhere so it's pretty easy to catch a score. You can bring in outside food and domestic pitchers are $10 while imports are $13. This place has changed a lot in the last year or so. It still has it's aged regulars and crazies (I'm fairly certain the quarter lady is harmless...) but a lot more 20 somethings have started coming here as well. On a weekday you can still enjoy a quieter atmosphere and you can't beat the prices. They just need to get food, but they don't mind if you bring in your own street meat or whatever. read more

I been noticing this place when I was walking home on 28th Ave and it was sooo close to my apartment that I wanted to check it out. It was a nice Irish Pub and it is alot bigger inside then it look from the outside. The bartender were nice and friendly. They have a buyback program where after you buying 2 drinks, you get 1 free after that. The guinness was good. They don't serve food but welcome bring other types of food around. I think it will be my 2nd home when I am bored or just like hanging out. It remind me of the Irish Pub near my house back in California(patsy). I will be coming back here soon. read more
