Jack's fire dept still feels like it could use some bar rescuing even after being featured on the show. The biggest issue during our visit was that there were ants roaming around our table the entire time. Maybe it was because the side door was left open. But it was pretty distracting and gross. They should figure out some way to keep ants from getting inside. I also ordered wings, and they came out looking a bit pinkish in the inside. Overall the food experience wasn't that great. Overall, the atmosphere was fun. Especially during the Knicks game, and the drink prices was affordable. If you're looking for a lively spot to grab cheap drinks and watch a game, it might work for you. I'd probably choose somewhere else next time. read more

I live in Sunnyside, and I truly believe this bar is a hidden gem that only locals seem to appreciate. We've spent many wonderful evenings here watching the Knicks play, and every visit reminds us of how much we adore the atmosphere. Visited the other night and was pleasantly surprised. I had the fried chicken wrap which was a nice size and tasty. Also had the dumpling beforehand and they were really good and crispy. The bartender, even though we sat at a table was really attentive and friendly. (No waitress, so the bartender took care of us). They seem like they had just finished a Halloween party for adults and kids, which was really cool and have off a really community/neighborhood feel. Really cool. They have a nice amount of TV's for sports viewing. I didn't realize they had a nice big backyard area and side area, definitely want to come back when it's warm to enjoy that. The decor is really cool with the front of a fire truck behind the bar and other fire themed items around. I did know the theme as I did see the Bar Rescue episode on this place several years ago. Finally got to try this spot after living in the neighborhood for over 10 years. It's a little out of the way from other bars and restaurants in the neighborhood. I wanted to love it but it was overall OK. I may try it again if I'm in that area but I wouldn't go out of my way. Fried pickles - Paid $9 for a sad 11 pieces! It was also too salty. Big Jack's Burger - Def a solid burger in the neighborhood and very flavorful. I didn't really taste the spicy kick from the ghost pepper cheese though. The bar is made very shinny , and parts are from fire trucks all around the place ! As you say by the Taps . You can see there's a fire truck windshield in front . I saw this place on a show called Bar Rescue! I didn't see anyone from the show when I was there . I wanted to see Bruce .. but maybe next time I'm here . I wanted to shoot a game of darts ! I saw this place on an episode of Bar Rescue and was really excited to visit a Makeover spot that was in the area and still open! We dropped by on a Friday afternoon so the place was not busy at all. The food was great, although they didn't have my first choice of dish. The high point of the experience was definitely the server who was friendly and made great substitutions. So here's the deal... Sunnyside is a pretty liberal, progressive place. Organic avocados, fair-trade beer, sunscreen for babies, and all that... Jack's ain't this. Jack's is blue collar, old school, (mostly) big brewery beer, classic rock, fried everything, bartenders too old for their tight tank tops (except Amy... oh my Amy!) You will stumble into a Let's Go Brandon convo here. It's cheap, laid back, and it's covid street-seating is nice and sunny on good days. It's covered back porch is good to hang with a group. I totally recommend Jack's Fire Dept if you're looking for a big patio to hang out in the afternoon, plus they do offer $9 for $20 Groupon deal which is a steal. We stopped by for some lunch and drinks on a hot afternoon. Beer selection wasn't the best out there, but good enough to quench your thirst. We were going to do the challenge, but since we had Thai food the day before, I guess our both ends are ready for anything spicy yet. We proceeded with two appetizers which were Burnt Brussels Sprout Chips (yum!) and Fried Calamari. As for entrées, we shared Ghost Pepper Grilled Cheese and Big Jack's Burger. Both items got some good kick of ghost pepper in them. Anyway, smoking is not allowed in the backyard, but you can smoke in the small patio on the side of the restaurant. Considering all the things this place has been through, there is a lot to appreciate about Jack's. They have gone from a subpar dive bar to one of the best themed bars in perhaps the entire borough. Sunnyside has plenty of Irish pubs around the corner and I'm actually stoked Jack's isn't one of them. They've managed to transform the space into a viable drinking hole, one that is interesting and most certainly unique. The color red dominates the exterior and interior but just enough to not be a total eye sore. They have ramped up the outdoor seating and feature a really solid backyard that is perfect for all sorts of events. To top it off, they brought in an actual face of a firetruck to be the backdrop of their bar. If that's not dedication, I don't know what is. At some point drinks are the same drinks everywhere but I appreciate the bartenders and the heavier pours here. The ambiance really does make this place more fun and the friendly regulars do add quite a bit to the socializing. They also have TVs for big time sporting events and even when they're busy, there always seems to be enough space for people to move around with plenty of breathing room. On the food front, they've really turned things around. They offer a really solid burger, maybe one of the better versions that any nightlife venue can offer in the hood. I'm a big fan of the "Irish potato skins", which are semi-hollowed out actual potato halves that are fully loaded with cheese, ham bits, and a house sauce. Even their wedges for fries are super tasty, crispy and well seasoned. It's a simple bar menu, but done very well. The parking situation is tougher here than other areas in the hood just because is knee deep on the residential side. It's way easier getting to the 40th stop via the subway on the 7 than testing the luck of finding parking within a block of this place. read more

We still come here pretty often for dinner or a drink, especially when it's nice out. Just recently brought some friends from out-of-town in and they loved it so much, they can't wait to come back. Beer/shot special is now $7 instead of $5, but it's still a great value. The Big Jack's Burger is still one of the best burgers i've ever had, no doubt that it's the best one in Sunnyside. I been craving for the best burgers near sunnyside so I went through Google type in as "best burger restaurants" in sunnyside. I clicked on the best 10 restaurants that had burgers. Some of the restaurant got me interested and Jack's fire Dept restaurant got me more interested in their burgers. I was greeted by a nice lady that worked behind the bar. She gave us the menu and gave us few minutes to choose what we wanted on the menu. I ordered the Jack's burger because on yelp I have seen great reviews on that burger. Also ordered nachos, and fries. The burger dish you could either get a salad or fries but I chose the salad. The burger was phenomenal! It had a little kick to it which I really loved about the burger. The fries were crispy and hot! Freshly made? It didnt felt like it was one of those frozen bags of fries. The nachos were okay nothing to complain about. The lady was very attentive asking how the foods were. I would definitely recommend to my friends and family. My fiancé and I have been wanting to eat here since we saw the business on bar rescue. It's sad to say they may need bar rescue to return. The grilled cheese challenge was nothing more than a cold cheese sandwich with hot sauce on it and a ghost pepper at the end. As mentioned in other reviews, they don't have the free t-shirt promised to customers who eat the cold cheese sandwich. The bartender told us to write our name and number on a piece of paper so they can contact us "in case they order more shirts". I won't be holding my breathe. Service was poor but it wasn't the bartenders fault. She was the only person working on a Saturday. Read that again. She was the only person working. She was the bartender, the waitress, and the busboy. That being said, the bartender was very sweet and helpful. Let's back track to the food. The food was cold. Can't say I was terribly impressed with this bar. Jack's is an old time bar in a back area of Long Island City, now frequented by Generation Xers and a few old timers. The beer garden at the rear though okay is a little dank in atmosphere. I was always a little concerned that I could trip on a stone somewhere. So I was never really comfortable outside. Inside the tight spaces and long saloon/bar was cramped and I was almost knocked off my stool next to an overweight and rather intoxicated old lady, who seemed to use the place as a hangout. She tried to mix in with the young professionals, but her appearance and demeanor made her standout, and she was politely ignored by the crowd. Still, I grabbed a cider and headed back to mix with a group of professionals, that were organizing a fundraiser. This was the only good part of my experience. There was plenty of traditional bar fare and finger food and the conversation about politics and life in Long Island City was congenial. I would not recommend anyone, particularly single women going by themselves to the bar at night, as getting to the there from the 40th street Queens Blvd 7 train means walking down a long dark street. All-in-all it was an okay experience at this bar, but I am not sure if I would really frequent this place. read more

This place has one of those "challenges"... See picture. Basically eat a spicy grilled cheese with ghost pepper and get a free shirt if you don't succumb to the cup of milk before you finish. Sounds fun, right? So, we did this. And after finishing the sandwich the bartender says "oh yeah, actually, we are out of shirts." That's it. No sorry, no consolation free beer, nothing to suggest that this was something she probably should have mentioned before we ordered, no estimate of when to expect more shirts... We just left our contact information this past wknd so when they do get more they will supposedly be in contact. Bf and I were in NY on vacation. Came on a Sunday afternoon Around 1230 and they actually had a good amount of people. We are obsessed with bar rescue and googled one in our area this came up on the list. Looks like a "bar rescued" bar from the outside and inside. Which isn't a bad thing. The fire dept theme is cute and consistent. By far the BEST FRIES. Fresh, thick, and crunchy. I tried the jack BBQ burger and wow! It's huge! Could barely bite it. Lots of flavor. Also tried the loaded fries would recommend them. Btw another Plus side they don't tax and the prices are amazing! Extremely inexpensive for the good quality food! Adorable backyard and great beer. Menu is very affordable and I really enjoyed the burnt brussell sprouts. The "Ghost Pepper Challenge" is no joke. When I was there, some silly out of towners (Bostonites!) thought it would be funny to do "shots" of the hot sauce. They then blamed management when they couldn't take the heat. It's ghost pepper, what did people think is going to happen? Management seemed to handle it professionally.
