Love this place; I totally love hardware stores. (Hardware stores: they're not just for lesbians anymore!) These guys aren't my local hardware store, but they're on my list for being knowledgeable and trustworthy. And--bonus points--it's a longtime family-owned business. And as another reviewer pointed out, they love dogs--always a plus. They have an amazing selection of products, and also the encyclopedic knowledge of the guy with the beard--a.k.a. I consider myself pretty savvy when it comes to home repairs, but my ancient apartment's fuse box had me completely stumped after I replaced a hardwired light fixture myself and couldn't get the power back on. The guys at Warshaw were incredibly helpful - they tested my fuses, looked at pictures of my setup, and offered plenty of advice (and sympathy) over at least four separate trips to the store in the course of an hour. I still had to call an electrician to get behind the actual fuse box, but the Warshaw guys helped me understand this ancient wiring where even Google had failed! I moved in around the corner about a year ago and have been here about a dozen times, and it's rare they don't have what I need - don't let the small space fool you! And if you live in the area, Ed and the crew work with a lot of the building supers and often know the quirks of your building (locks, metric plumbing, cloth wiring etc.) and are happy to share their knowledge if you ask. read more

I saw better prices on a few things at another store and I don't know if that's across the board. Firstly, may I say this is the first review I have every posted! I am so lucky to have this amazing hardware store in my neighborhood. A few days ago I was having trouble with my vacuum cleaner and figured I might need a new one. I called and one of the owners said bring it in and let me take a look. Amazingly enough it was a simple fix and he didn't even want to be paid, who does this? About 6 months ago I was having trouble with my door key getting stuck. I went in and one of the owners, who is a a locksmith said "you know I don't think you need a new lock, use this product for a week and then flood with WD40". He saved me $300 plus new medico locks. A few years ago I had a mid century broken lamp and they repaired it for $25. These two owners are amazingly helpful, very ethical and informative and have a sense of humor. Why would anyone want to go anywhere else. Let us support this great local hardware store! read more

I recently moved from Kips Bay to Gramercy and found this store to be far superior to 'Nuthouse' on 29th street. Is it spotless and orderly? Hell no. But the fourth-generation owners know where everything is, and they're always ready to help. They always have what I'm looking for, and the plumbers, contractors, and handymen know that they have what they're looking for, too. At the start of the pandemic, Warshaw was the only store I knew of that sold n95 masks, and they didn't jack up the prices. This place has soul. Warshaw rocks. First off - if you need keys made, this is the place. They cut Medecos for me all the time and they always come out perfect. But most of all I like this place because you can walk in and just ask for what you need and get it (and often you are asked before you get a chance to ask for help). Need a missing screw for under a chair? They'll have it. And you won't be walking around aisles and aisles of stuff looking for an orange-smocked helper. Here's the best story: I had a knob break on my air conditioner. Such a pain to use pliers instead. Finally I stabbed and asked the guy at Warshaw if he might have one, and he came out with a bag of old air conditioner knobs! For $4 my pain was over. For that reason and the keys, I go out of my way to visit Warshaw, rather than the 24-hour place that is closer to me. read more

I came in this morning in need of drywall anchors and screws. I hate to admit it, but I am not so savvy about these things (though I sure hope to be soon!). The staff member who helped me asked all the right questions to make sure I got the most appropriate type of anchor (no idea there was more than 1 kind!) and the best screws to go with them for my needs. He was both kind and of course helpful, and didn't make me feel silly about my very novice level understanding of what I needed. Best hardware store in NYC and the best staff. Bearded man has a fantastic attitude (even with persnickety clients, watched him in action) and is a solid customer service human, a real NYC character. When they can't do something i.e. they can copy keys but not mailbox keys, they know where to send you. They have so much in such a tiny space and are very helpful- I've never gone for an item and left empty handed. They even fix and rewire old lamps. I cannot say enough good things about this hardware store and the people who work here - I am so happy to have found it. I just moved into the neighborhood and have needed a few items to help settle into my new apartment. Warshaw Hardware has been a godsend. It must be immensely difficult to run a small business in NYC, but the kindness, knowledge, and decency with which this hardware store is run puts it lightyears beyond any big box competitor. My smoke alarm was beeping and it sounded like it needed new batteries but when I replaced the batteries it continued to beep. This indicated that it was at the end of its useful life. Furthermore, it is a hardwired unit which means that it connects into the electricity of the apartment and has a battery backup. I brought the unit into the store and a picture of the mounting plate with me. Spoke with one of the owners and he accessed just the right thing in a matter of moments. Even though the price of the replacement smoke detector is a couple bucks higher than the big box store which is a short walk away, I will always choose this hardware store against that one. As many other reviewers have noted, these two brothers are incredibly helpful and more often than not often very funny in a typically New York City way, which is to say helpful with warm, sarcastic humor. I have bought many things here in the past as they are my neighborhood hardware store and they are customer service-oriented in a way that commonly existed 50 years ago but not today. If you want to know what shopping was truly like before the Internet step into their time machine. They are certainly worth a few dollars extra on certain items and are quite competitive on the rest. There have been times I've walked in there just to be around the good humor and classic New York City experience that these two brothers, and their employees provide. Customer for life! P.S. It's refreshing to walk into a family owned establishment that cares about their customers and knows every item in every nook of their store. I've gone in for simple requests and odd ones. Recently I needed help with a repair on a vintage style fan, they spent 30mins helping me put it back together and when all was said and done, they charged me $1 for the screw and smiled. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat: So my day started out well today. Up early, walk the dogs, head to play cards. Then the phone rings - and my phone never rings during bridge so I know it's something big, perhaps a telemarketing call or someone asking if I want to donate to a political campaign. But noooooooooo - it's my cleaning lady who is locked out of my apartment because my sister and niece, who are staying with me, had locked a lock that the cleaning lady had no key for. Worse yet, I also have no key for that lock. And my sister and niece are now 2 hours west of my apartment visiting another sister. (Yes, there are lots of sisters, but that is not what we're talking about here. Stay focused, guys). I realize that I now have 3 dogs (1 a visitor) in my furry, dirty apartment, who will be locked IN until 7pm or later. Even worser (I know that's not grammatically correct but I'm making a point here so let it go), I am locked OUT until 7pm or later tonight. So I do what any normal red-blooded dog owner would do, I eat lunch. Then I take the bus home. The bus drops me off right in front of Warshaw Hardware, my local hardware store, whose storefront includes a neon sign (or a sign from God) saying "Locksmith". I enter, confidently marching past all the contractors haggling over PCP piping, and I tell the clerk "I need a locksmith immediately because I have three dogs locked in my apartment who will tear the place apart if they don't get walked". The clerk smiles and says "The Locksmith is out to lunch". I think about food. Then a miracle occurs. A young man, with magic in his big blue eyes, says "I think I can save you some money". After ascertaining that he actually works at the hardware store, I say "Tell me more". "Do you think you can get me some pictures of the key you need", he says. Rest assured I do just that, instructing my sister to text me pictures of the key. And from those pictures, this genius makes me a key and says "Try this. If it doesn't get you into your apartment we'll deduct its $10 cost from the $350 it will cost you to get a whole new lock". I am dubious. I walk the few blocks home and put the key in the lock. I'm sure after all this you're expecting the key to work. I can fully understand that would be the conclusion you would draw. Well, guess what. It does work! I am met with the wiggliest, waggliest dogs who I am sure felt they would never again see the light of day. My cleaning lady agrees to come clean after she finishes my neighbor's apartment. I am out of pocket $10 instead of $350. And all is good with the world. This is what customer service looks like. And Warshaw Hardware has been providing this type of service for the 35 years I've been living in this neighborhood. Bravo! read more

Someone recommended them to me and I do like to support local businesses, as we all try, so I went. They fixed my antique lamp in a day and it's so nice they took a day, but I took a year to bring it. Next time. Anywho, everyone's super nice there and the customers seem to know the owner. Great hardware with a solid inventory and awesome staff!

3.5 stars. I randomly entered this hardware store upon passing with hope that there would be a solution for my clogged sink. The store is small and appears somewhat disorganized. However, the owner of this longtime family business was very friendly and helpful. He had good advice and sold me an effective, non-costly instrument. I was ready to give a raving review afterwards because I was so ecstatic that my sink could finally drain and that it has remained unclogged since then. However, I have settled on 3.5 stars after finding out that Home Depot sells the same instrument for half the price. In conclusion, if you want to support a local business and don't mind paying more for individualized attention and helpful advice, Warshaw Hardware is a good place for you to head to when seeking a solution for household and hardware issues. read more

I went in today looking for a particular product in a particular size that a couple of other hardware stores didn't have in stock. They figured out what I was looking to purchase and were able to find it in their very cluttered shop. You know what though? I'll take the super cluttered, disorganized shop with product in stock over the gleaming and clean shop with empty shelves any day. I didn't need to look for anything, the employees there already know where everything is. Personnel were engaging and helpful. And funny. This place isn't cheap though. For a quick pickup of something you need, and to support a local small business, the extra markup is worth it. read more

I can spend hours looking at the different nuts-bolts-miscellaneous hardware. They have everythiiiiiing. Blue booties, Bona floor cleaning stuff, plant soil and vitamins, a beautiful life size organized nuts and bolts - nails aisles (it's like a nut library!), blue tape, escutcheons, brackets, tools, plumbing supplies, etc etc... you get what I mean. If I was into the robot building I would geek out here. I am happy that there in construction in the area to (hopefully) keep them busy! This store is a gem and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Even if u try to explain what piece broke or what's busted at home....they will help as much as they can. To say that I'm frighteningly inexperienced in the home/building materials department would be a real understatement... naturally, I was a little intimidated by the idea of visiting the shop.
