Gosh! everything everyone says of this place is absolutely true! What amazes me is the size of this place. Tiny little space with a great atmosphere. Every patron is so friendly. The drinks are innovative to say the least. You could go to the extent and ask for a special drink and they will try their best to make it for you. Their happy hour is 2pm to 8pm @ $3.50 a drink. What a deal for Waikiki. This was my first visit to Wang Chungs and didn't quite know where it was. I ended up walking an extra 2 blocks to get there but it was definitely worth the walk. The have 2 flat screen monitors and if no one's singing karaoke, Dan has a rolling slide show of all the patrons, parties and ... I feel special as he put my pic up there with the rest of them after only 1 visit to the place. I am guessing they get busy after 8 pm so if you're looking to have a couple before or after dinner stop in at Wang Chung's. This is the best bar that I went to during my stay in Waikiki. My peoples and I were bar hopping and found this place through yelp. We were a bit apprehensive about going in because the establishment is SUPER TINY. But a patron of this bar convince us to just all shove in and give it a try. We're so happy that we took the chance! The main attraction was the public karaoke they had there. You go onto their website using your phone, choose your song, and then wait for your turn! It's free! A bit of warning: EVERYONE WHO SANG SOUNDED PROFESSIONAL. I don't know if it just happened to be that night, but everyone I heard sounded like they were competing for American Idol. So even though everyone was nice and supportive, it would be very intimidating to actually sing there. But we were quite happy sitting there listening to everyone else belt out their tunes. My girlfriends and I loved the cocktails here so much that every cocktail we had after our night here pales in comparison. We all wanted to come back here! Such a fun little bar! Wang Chung's is located down a small alley in near King's Court. Right next door to Iyasume Musubi! My friend wanted to sing karaoke so we ended up here! Happy Hour is from 5-8 so make sure you come during that time. Less people, cheaper drinks, and free karaoke. The drinks are $1 cheaper and the songs are free, after 8pm the songs are $1 each. When we got there around 6:15pm on a Saturday night, there were only about 5-6 other people with us. Nobody was singing karaoke yet so it was very quiet. After people got some drinks in them and the bartender himself sang a song, the fun started! The songs are online, so use their free wifi and your smartphone to search for any song that you want to sing. There are 2 mikes so you don't have to sing alone. Since it was a small atmosphere it doesn't seem as nerve-wracking as the solo stage kind of karaoke. We just kept choosing songs and passing the mikes around the bar. We sang all types of songs from Wonderwall, Womanizer, Tik Tok, Kiss Me, and Tequila! Our bartender was Grayson and he was super nice and made sure to ask everyone their name, unless he knew them already. The drinks are DELICIOUS! You have to try the Lychee Co-tini, which uses their lychee infused vodka but my favorite was the mangotini. It tasted like a mango was just sqeezed into my mouth. Amaze-balls. Order songs from their website, just write down the number in front of the song on their list, then, the microphones are yours. Two large televisions displaying lyrics. What hasn't already been said about Wang Chung's? If you're scared of: a) the gays; b) my-nuts-are-in-your-crack crowds (I'm not exaggerating); and c) boisterous patrons who have mastered the art of yelling-that-can-sometimes-pass-as-singing then I'd say you should probably stay the frack away from Wang Chung's. This place is smaller than most master-bedrooms -- believe me, I've been in a lot of master-bedrooms. If I can remember correctly, this place is way smaller than my pre-Revolutionary War Alexander Hall dorm room (I lied about the Revolutionary War part). I would say guessing that the dimension of the room is 20x20 is pushing it ... meh, you get my drift, this place is hella small. The drinks are stiff and moderately priced (the back-lit fluorescent sign has all the bar's specials/signature cocktails -- try the lychee infused vodka). There's Kirin Ichiban on tap. There are two huge flat screen TV's in opposing corners of the room for KARAOKE. So, this is pretty much the best bar in Waikiki, possibly even in all the Hawaiian islands. Yes, it's a gay bar, so there will probably be gay people present. Every time I've been here, everyone has been super friendly and likes to give massages. I went twice at night and once around opening. Every time has been a different experience. I liked coming around opening because there will be only a few people, it's easy to have a conversation, and most importantly get as many karaoke songs in as you'd like. At night, anything goes--there might be lots of heterosexual bros hogging the mic or a lot of quiet Asian guys. You really just have to go check it out and be open minded. The drinks are good and decently priced. If you forget to close out your tab, you will be charged 15% tip. Dan (the owner) is a really nice dude and it's easy to see why his bar is so successful after interacting with him for a little bit. I really like the karaoke system they have. You have to go to their website and look for song that way. Then you just write the song on a piece of paper and the bartender uses a phone to input your song into the system--really clean system without huge controllers or bulky book. I was determined to go to Wang Chung's for my B-Day weekend...and so I did. We called ahead of time to ask whether or not we could reserve seats since I knew the place got pretty crowded. They told us people can usually reserve the room for $200 an hour, we didn't want to do that so we decided to just arrive early... Around 6:30pm on Friday night my gf and I arrived at Wang Chung's and since they don't sell pupus we were able to bring our own food, which came in handy later that night. There was hardly anyone there so while we waited for everyone to get there, we got to know Cory the bartender and Dan the owner, who quickly found out we were there to celebrate my birthday and next thing you know, I got leid...first surprise of the night. So I started to get comfortable and took advantage of their HAPPY HOUR: 5-8 daily: $3 domestics and $4 imports&wines. Later that night I also tried their $9 Keylime Pie drink, which was delicious, like dessert in a drink! As the night progressed, more of my peeps started coming in, Wang's started getting crowded and most all 11 of us had a place to sit! So there we were laughing, eating, singing, and mingling and then another surprise...they pulled out a cupcake and sang Happy Birthday! I felt so special and just couldn't believe they did that! This place is definitely small. Like smaller than my living room small. But when you enter, a cute young Asian guy greets you with a smile and a hug. I had just assumed that this guy was friends with someone I was with but he was actually the owner, Dan. I spent a solid minute looking for a song booklet but Wang Chung's has done away with that innovating instead to be able to search for songs on its website. Songs are a dollar each, which you can put on your tab. Drinks are also ridiculously cheap - just stay away from the jalapeno vodka, it made a bunch of our group gag in regret. The crowd was amazing. Aside from the usual sorority girl group singing Gaga or Taylor Swift, I got the impression that a lot of locals and regulars come here and damn, they were amazing. I told one girl she needed to audition for American Idol, X-Factor or The Voice. She was good enough for any of them. It's like renting a room in one of those Karaoke places with strangers and your very own bartender serving drinks. The place is small but cozy. If you are visiting for the first time, you need to locate it first since it's on the first floor of a building with the entrance on the side of the bldg and last door. I missed it the first time and had to keep looking for the address on my Yelp map. Finally found it and the first night was more of an observing the natives at their habitat. It was not crowded but it seem to have some regulars so I basically drank while others sang (some better than others). However this is not an American Idol contest but rather a typical Karaoke bar which is often plentiful in Honolulu/Waikiki because of the influence of Asian culture of Hawaiians and tourists. The number one word when going to a place like Wang Chung's is FUN as Everybody have fun tonight, let's Wang Chung Tonight. I did run into some friends on the 2nd night I visited, they were there for the same wedding I attended (Congrats Joanne & Glen - fellow Yelpees!). Just a heads up, this is a Gay Bar, in case you didn't realize it. We went here during our trip to Oahu and were celebrating Halloween. We decided to go bar hopping and this was our first stop. This place is amazing. From the great mix of drinks, friendly patron, and the lively crowd, what is there not to like about this place. On the weekend, they offer karaoke, which is really fun if you are into that. It ends up being a group karaoke after everyone had enough to drink and knows the song. We met the owner, Dan, one of the most down to earth people I've met. He is very knowledgeable about his drinks and carefully mixes everything perfectly. As guests were leaving, he was personally handing out water bottle for people to sober up. How thoughtful is that?!?!?! For anyone looking for a good drink, the watermelon vodka martini is BOMB! They also had Lychee vodka, which is fresh lychee soaking in a big container of vodka. You cannot miss it when you come in. Only downside to this place is that it is a bit small, but that makes it more fun! Also, food is not served here. However, they always welcomed us to bring food if we are hungry. I recommend this place to anyone and cannot wait for our next trip to Oahu. 5 star all the way. 3 things you must do when you get here... 1. Look for our picture on the big TV. 2. My advice for someone visiting coming here. Remember, you are drunk the song request was a dollar you don't have to stay there, just suck it up and move on. Hawai'i has some of the best hospitality I've ever received. Seeing the great reviews I really thought this was going to be the place to get a homie queer setting amongst locals, as a gay man of color... I was not impressed The only mediocre service I received during my stay in Waikiki was from some of the staff. (On a regular weekend) they only seem to know where the mics are when it's their time to sing or when they feel the need to say something aggressive. Your song will get bumped several times. They get super overwhelmed with big queues at the bar whenever one of them wants to sing. Yet you will catch them doing duets... I assumed that the setting was going to be a lot more welcoming but you know what they say about assuming... Sometimes it's nice to get to know your bartender...or get a drink instead of having your "sassy" (rude) bartender decide to entertain you with a slow song at 10:00 on a Saturday night. Wang Chung's is a gay karaoke bar that happens to be Waikiki's highest-rated bar on Yelp. My brother and his girlfriend had been once a few years ago, and suggested going on the Friday night of our family weekend in Honolulu. They remembered it being tiny and ridiculously fun, and as it was walking distance from our hotel, we decided to check it out. It had apparently expanded since their initial visit, but I can confirm that it was ridiculously fun. Five of us--me, husband, brothers, and brother's girlfriend--walked in at around 9:00, and the place was lively but not at all crowded. We were able to grab a small table and park there for four hours. The bar got busier as the night went on, but was never overwhelming. The crowd was super friendly. We were a group of straight tourists, but felt quite welcome. We weren't the only straight people there, but I don't think there were so many of us that we ruined the place. Every last patron seemed to be having a great time--a pretty rare distinction for a bar, I would think. The space was charming and vibrant, with like neon anime decor and plenty of room for people to roam around belting out karaoke. Service was excellent. The bartenders were busy but impressively quick and friendly (and also all had crazy abs, displayed under cut-off T-shirts). They also made downright decent cocktails at reasonable prices. I had a great Old Fashioned, complete with fancy cocktail bar spherical ice cube, as well as a delicious Moscow Mule made with house ginger beer. Even the typically gross bar drinks were pretty good--my brother had an Adios Mother Fucker and an Electric Lemonade, both boozy and blue, and they were surprisingly not disgusting. We also availed ourselves of several $2 champagne jello shots. Not strong, but fun to eat. Somewhere in there, we had some draft beer, too. We drank steadily for four hours and some of us may have slept through the famous emergency alert the next morning because we had a lot to sleep off. The karaoke was a blast. We heard some stellar performances--my favorites were Poor Unfortunate Souls from The Little Mermaid and a Cher song belted by a dude with tons of heart and talent. I was also partial to the Tenacious D duet one of my brothers ended up doing with a guy in a full hair metal get-up. We got to sing a handful of songs for a dollar apiece, and I got the sense that the system worked to ensure fairness and civilized behavior, so that no one group hogged the mic or clogged the queue. The song selection was extensive and easy to search on the Wang Chung's website. My husband doesn't sing and generally dislikes karaoke bars, but even he couldn't help but have a good time here. I'm not a karaoke singer, but I definitely had fun watching and listening to others sing. Even though the place is small, they have a stocked bar so you can pretty much order anything. I had the Melon Calpico and my usual Grey Goose Cran. The karaoke music selection seems to be pretty extensive too. Seems they update it every couple months with the latest songs. This is a gay friendly bar, but there was a good mix of people when we went. Some were locals and others were tourists. There was a group of husbands with their drunk wives from Texas that came in. Since the ladies were drunk, it was really fun to watch them sing and dance. I was also impressed how well most of the guys sing. One guy was singing to his boyfriend and I must say I was jealous because his man was singing to him with such a great voice. It made my husband look bad. Hahaha! The bartender was busy so he personally mixed the drinks for us himself. Wow, the Mangotini is amazing! Sweet with a lot of mango flavor, you cannot taste the alcohol. Dangerous, very dangerous. Some of the other drinks were good too but the Mangotini was by far our favorite. There were about 10-15 other people in the room and all of them were good singers. A amazing bar and restaurant. The food is created with Aloha and the drinks with sass. The bartenders are always fun and energetic. In the middle of the shift you might find them singing and I have seen them sing and create a hand crafted cocktail. That takes skill. It is the best karaoke bar in Waikiki. The owner is there a lot and loves to see new and old faces. They have brunch every SundayFunday and once a month there is a Drag Brunch. Normally after the brunch there is a catamaran hosted by Tre who is awesome. It is BYOB and I'm ok with that. They do a lot for the LGBTQ community and hold fundraisers often. The beer is primarily local and the signature drinks are created and specially prepped. The food is well... amazing. I love the lemon pepper popcorn chicken. My favorite drink the jalapeño margarita. The song list is online and you can search for it on your phone. It cost 1$ to submit your song and can sing as much as you want. FYI, this is not a restaurant, it's a fun gay Karaoke bar lounge; reminded me of my young days w/friends in high school partying in WeHo. Hotel clerk kept insisting the restaurant is located in the left side when you go in, Other people kept walking in going left and walking right out. I almost walked into the bathroom, until a nice kind gentleman pointed out to me, it's just a bar, but that I should ask the hunky bartender if their are still serving food and that the food was DIVINE, as he stated. Well he did not lie, it was pretty darn good!!!! It's got the 80s theme (Yes, we all know the song, if your old like me or a fan of the decade)... All others looking for typical bourgeois places by the shops on the strip.....please proceed to go there, this place is not for you, unless you are fun spirited. All & All, if you up for some good vittles, fun crowd & singing your heart out, come on in, after all, it's within steps of stumbling back drunk to your hotel room. We brought the party with 4 of our friends and Corey made us feel right at home! One of the best times we had in Oahu. Gay bar or not you're guaranteed a great time. It could have been 500 sq. ft. or 5,000 sq. ft. and you will have an amazing time. Delicious drinks and great people. Such great memories were made here. Felt like home.
