Wow. What started to be a great time went down hill fast. We came into Waikīkī again. Seems the locals are definitely in charge here. A small group of older regulars and bartenders kept the mic. I stopped into In Between Karaoke Bar to grab a drink and escape the rain, and I'm really glad I did. It's a tiny spot tucked away in a small alley--if you're having trouble finding it, the entrance is through the alley next to Prada. The bar has a great local dive feel. The bartender was super friendly and also an excellent singer. We ended up meeting a mix of other visitors and locals, and it definitely felt like one of those places people casually pop into--welcoming, unpretentious, and fun. One thing that really surprised me was the sound system. For such a small place, the audio quality was phenomenal and made singing feel way more legit than expected. With the purest of intentions (ahem), Jamie W. and I have patronized at least a half-dozen gay bars in Honolulu, and hands down, this was our favorite. It has to be the smallest as well. Hidden away in a narrow walkway between Lau'ula Street and Kalakaua Avenue, it definitely doesn't provide the space offered by spots like Hula's Bar & Lei Stand and Chiko's Tavern. However, we felt genuine personal warmth from the staff and not the nasty kind your dirty mind presumed. I think they recognize the value of a personal connection when quarters are a bit tight. They offer karaoke at a $1 per song with an extensive set list. I was ready to cover "I'm Every Woman", but unfortunately I forgot to invite my backup singers. Ahem. Quite possibly the friendliest bar I've ever visited. It's always a little unnerving dropping in on an unknown place while traveling, but I wanted to get my karaoke fix, and they came highly recommended, so I decided to take my chances and stop in. The bartender, Jabriel, was super friendly and couldn't have made me feel more welcome. He's a great singer too. Excellent karaoke vibe; everyone claps for everyone, and the turnaround was fairly quick because it's a small place. Had a great time at In Between, in a tourist town, any night can be like a Friday night at home and this place didn't disappoint. Sure it's small, it probably only fits 20 people, and sure, you can fit a couple more who spill out into the alley walkway, but everyone was singing along and imbibing on $9 drinks, which honestly, for the area $9 was a steal. I've never seen a pay to play karaoke, but it worked. Look up their song list on the website, pick your song, hand it to the staff, they'll add you to the list and $1 to your bar tab. Sabrina at the bar was amazing!! Drinks were so good! If you see a middle aged bartender be careful he asked me to shut up as I tried to help a patron find the rhythm to a song she chose. They didn't even ask for the mic before her song came on. I can't believe a staff member would feel he's entitled to speak to anyone at the bar this way especially after a few round of drinks and shots. Huge thanks to Cedric for trying to make up for the horrible bartender, he apologized on the bar's behalf and took time to say hello to the entire group I brought in. Small hole in the wall dive karaoke bar and when I mean dive and small I mean divey and tiny! And the name means exactly what it says: it's in the middle of an alley! Their website indicates that they are the friendliest gay bar in Waikiki and so far they are but we haven't been anywhere else yet. Daily happy hour from 12 to 8 with 5.00 well specials and 3.00 beers. The only downside is it is very small and very loud so to have a conversation and socialize this isn't the place. If you're coming to have a couple cocktails and sing or people watch then this is your place! read more

A solid 10/10 - the song choices were as questionable as my decisions after two rounds of whatever they poured me. But what really stole the show was the unexpected... entertainment. Imagine three grown men miming things you'd usually pay a website for, and then one guy thought, "Why not?" and casually aired out his *ahem* personal equipment through the bottom of his shorts. All this unfolded like some bizarre, X-rated performance art. You come for the karaoke, but you stay because you're trying to figure out if you've wandered into a surreal reality show. Atmosphere is great however the bartenders only like gay men. I thought I would feel accepted here but instead the bartender ignored me and when I finally got his attention he yelled at me and told me not to interrupt him. He ended up kicking me out and then chased me out yelling aggressively because I didn't leave a tip. So unprofessional.
