I should've read the reviews first! We went in for Sunday lunch for my adult son's birthday. I was surprised the restaurant was so empty compared to the busy Claremont atmosphere. We tried to get in elsewhere, but there was a super long wait. The initial ambience of the restaurant looked very classy, though looking around at their outside and patio seating it seemed like it was put together haphazardly. The waitress said their specialty was the lamb so we ordered four different lamb dishes. Spinach lamb omelette, lamb burger, lamb burrito and lamb fajitas. The lamb itself was OK but the food was very dull and mediocre. I won't go into detail about each plate because the meal was just so uneventful. It's like the chef was sleepwalking when they created the dishes. I'm in the Claremont once a month for the Sundays farmers market and we will definitely skip this restaurant next time we're in town. read more

Thank you to the lovely staff at Walter's for giving my husband, myself, & our pup, the perfect evening out. From the courtesy I experienced over the phone when I called, to the ambiance, drinks, music, and food, we enjoyed the most perfect evening out. Thank you for your hospitality & look forward to next time. read more

A friend introduced me to Walter's and I'm glad they did. It's a fairly large place, with various seating options and ability to go in for just drinks, dinner, or simply a place to hangout. The ambience is nice inside and the service is good. Drinks felt fair in price, and they even have a rewards system that can get you money off after enough visits. Would surely recommend Walter's to others! read more

Food & service was great. Ambiance was lovely. So much so that I forgot to take pictures of our food *wah* Our server, Jesse, was really friendly and attentive. He regularly checked up on my group. Food was awesome. They have a great variety of dishes. I was trying to stay away from meat this particular night and felt adventurous, so I ordered a vegetarian dish I'd never even heard of; the BADENJAN BORANIE. It was great! Essentially, it's four big slices of eggplants served with a slice of grilled tomato and a dollop of this really savory yogurt (tasted almost garlicky) all on top of basmati rice! There were carrots and raisins mixed in there, too. No pictures so just take my word for it; Delicious! read more

I made reservations 2 days prior to attending for my moms birthday. The restaurant looked very appealing, hence my choice to dine here. We got seated (table for 7) as soon as the place opened, it wasn't busy, only a few tables taken. Our waiter too our drink orders, a little while later we all got our drinks. It was then that I began getting upset. No one checked on us to see if we were ready to order, it was about 20mins in, I got up and had to walk inside the restaurant to ask for someone. Waiter finally came took our order, by the time the food came my guests were more than halfway done with their drinks. I was drinking water and a mimosa so I didn't run out of drinks (water). My son to my left finished his food and I noticed no one had came for refills. I looks at my other son and brother, they were also done witht heir soft drinks. I look over too see if anyone is coming to check on us, nothing. I get up and walk into the restaurant once again to ask for refills. By then my guests are all done with their food.. I was SO upset and embarrassed at the place I had chosen. Here I thought this "fancy" place w those prices would have better service. WRONG. Don't waste you money, your better off at Dennys or IHOP for half the price. The food is blah too, my aunts coffee mug was dirty when they gave it to her. Anyway the reason they get 2 stars is because the coffee lady was on it w the coffee. Besides that there's nothing positive I can say. I also thumbs down the credit card payment machine they give you. I nor my guests will ever return. I was also surprised that after I wrote celebrating a birthday, they made no comment whatsoever, no desert offered to sing.. nothing. This place is all show, so disappointing. read more

I've walked by Walter's quite a few times when spending time in Claremont village and finally tried this restaurant on Friday for my birthday! We called ahead and made reservations for their outdoor area. Their outdoor dining area is nice but also does feel a little closed in if you are not sitting out on the airy patio overlooking the street. We were kind of sat in a back corner which didn't feel too outdoorsy. Just a note if you're looking for more of an open air patio feel. The menu is super diverse and truly offers something for everyone. I got the ribeye steak which was delicious! The mashed potatoes it came with really enhanced the steak as well. Everyone I was with was also super happy with their food. The staff was very attentive and helpful as well. I'd definitely come back to Walter's for a nice meal- but would opt for the open patio next time! read more

We chose Walter's to host my Father's 75th birthday. Charly, my event planner/contact was amazing. She made every effort to ensure our event was a success! Communication was timely and thorough. The event space was perfect. Due to our party size we were able to enjoy the outdoor patio along with the inside banquet room. The adjoining patio created a nice flow for the party. The patio has a fire pit which created a nice ambiance, great for socializing, as well as convenient access to the outdoor bar. Austin, the bartender was superb! Even with attending to regular patrons he was quick, efficient and great drinks. The manager and service staff were great and very accommodating. I received many compliments throughout the evening. We were very pleased we chose Walter's for our special occasion. read more

I've eaten at Walter's quite a few times over the years and been reasonably satisfied with the food. I ate there a few evenings ago and was not happy at all with my order - vegetarian chili and cornbread. I'm a vegan, so there are few things on the menu that I can eat, in this case, the cornbread may not have been vegan, oh well. The menu indicated that the vegetarian chili had beans, which was not evident in my serving. The food was also tremendously salty - fortunately for me, my blood pressure was okay, so no emergency room visit, but still tremendously salty. Overall, the food was marginal and I probably will not be returning. So, I got a canned response from someone at Walter's apologizing for the poor service, which was not the topic of my review. It's nice to know that they care enough to completely ignore customer complaints. The service was okay, nothing to crow about, but okay. It's just the quality of the food that needed a great deal of help. I decided to update my review to reflect the apparent disregard the staff has towards the opinions of their customers. read more

Highly disappointed in how we were treated today at Walter's. Went to see The Dogs play. Didn't know we had to check in at the front so we made our way to the lounge for a party of 6. After a few minutes of sitting down we were confronted by a manager and two hostesses. The manager made them aware that we didn't check in and said we needed to do so at the front. Nice way to treat your potential customers, Ace. Yeah, let's embarrass our guests in front of other patrons. What a jerk! Maybe he is rude to compensate for his own shortcomings . See, I can make you look small too! Oh wait... Getting mixed signals the hostess said we could remain where we were while she went to get menus and to find us a table. What's wrong with the one we were at I was thinking. Nope, not available. We were taken to a seat inside the restaurant. She then took us inside and away from the band. She said when we were done eating we could move to the lounge. I told her we weren't eating other than appetizers. She said, "Yeah, when you're done you are welcome to find a seat in the lounge." Why can't we sit where we were, I asked. "Because that's reserved for large parties" she said. Six people aren't considered a large enough party? Yeah, we're not staying. Peace out! What kind of establishment do they think they are? This isn't 90210! For our next high school reunion I'll be darn sure we won't be returning to Walter's. Peace out Walter's - That's not how I want my classmates treated! read more

This pace is a hidden gem! I celebrated my birthday and it was not what i expected. The menu has so many choices, the server was very attentive and they even had music playing in the background. It was Hip music at that! We were a party of 12 with no reservations and yet they still managed to accommodate us. Little did we know they have a hidden back room where live (hip music) is played and you can dance. Also where we dined was considered a patio (closed) as well as the back room. If you are in the area or need a little brea for some good food and stiff drinks , go and check out Walters, you will not be disappointed. read more

Definitely try this place when visiting Claremont! Came here this week with girlfriends for a late lunch. Love the outside courted sitting area - cute relaxing ambiance. Our service was good! Cocktails are amazing they all looked so good I tried three different ones lol. Egg rolls and hummus for appetizer, but my main course was beyond.. I had the Ashraf Kabob, the flavor of the meat was so bold and tasty and I love that it came on a pizza type pita bread. Dessert was okay but I'll try something different next time.. yes next time, I will be back! Ordered: * Lunch: Ashraf Kabob * Cocktail: Berry Fields, raspberry mule & sangria * Dessert: Mixed Berry Tarlet read more

Service was EXCELLENT! Food was ok. They quickly remade the tandoori fries when they were delivered cold but they were never hot. Lamb kabob was flavorles. Grilled onions on the plate were good. Ambiance was excellent. I really wanted to like this place. Maybe sandwiches and burgers are better. Try it and see yourself. read more

TERRIBLE. I wouldn't step foot in this restaurant again. Horrible service. Drinks were too strong and not enjoyable. And food was meh. Definitely not worth going to. There's so many other options in downtown Claremont and I wish we would've chose literally anywhere else to eat. Super disappointed. read more

We had an anniversary party, having reserved their "Afghan Room," so this is a review of their "private event" service. The room is beautifully decorated. The food was wonderful. The pre-printed menu for our large group was adhered to. Everyone got what they ordered, from steak and lamb chops to salmon and vegetarian pasta. The house wines, which many guests ordered, are very good. Our servers were attentive but not intrusive, and dealt promptly with requests. We chose Walter's for this event because we have been coming there to eat for many years, and had a previous anniversary party there. We like the variety, as well as the quality, of their food. If you want Afghan, if you want American comfort food, if you want pasta, French-inspired desserts, salads, standard breakfast fare, they have it all. One caution: it's not cheap. But it's worth what they charge. Thanks to the owners and the staff for making our special day truly special. read more

Absolutely my number one spot in Claremont for any time of the day or occasion! The atmosphere is always on point, and I've had many client meetings here, gone to happy hour or brunch with the girls on a weekly (and sometimes daily basis), dinner dates, etc. Dogs are welcome and they'll bring you water for them. Best happy hour in town! Daytime and late night. $9 goat cheese pizza is a fave, they also offer Gluten Free pasta, pizza, and selection of desserts. Speaking of their Late Night hours, I've been here nearly every weekend over the summer and now fall, when they're open until 2am. Feels great to be out! This is the first place I visited after outdoor dining was first reinstated. They have a really great service and staff. Well-trained, friendly, and they are all on it with health and safety protocols. There is so much room and space to actually be socially distanced from other parties with the huge outdoor dining options they have. Courtyard and patio. Masks are required when not at your table and there are barriers everywhere to separate parties. They have a huge selection of dishes, world cuisine really, and there's truly something for everyone. Some of of my favorite dishes: Tandoori Salmon, the kabobs, ceviche, omelettes, lamb dishes, any of the Afghan dishes actually, bolawnies, and the chutney! Omg the chutney! The owners immigrated from Afghanistan over 50 years ago, and we've all been able to enjoy their family recipes at Walter's ever since. I recommend making reservations for weekend days and nights especially. Recently there's been a bit of a wait during dinner and brunch hours, which makes me happy for them and the industry! Thank you Walter's! read more

I just want to share my last years' experience at the Easter Brunch at the Walter's. But first I like to mention that I have been there many times and with exception of a very spicy Lule kebab, food and service has always been good. I had enjoyed the brunch several times before, but can't recall if I paid for it. Thus, I had invited five family members for the brunch for the total of six at the table. After we sat, the waiter told us where the food was and informed us that it was "self-service" including the beverage. The busboy brought us water and when we were done collected the dirty dishes. That was the extent of the service provided, which was ok. However, when the bill arrived---there was a service charge of $100.00 for the party of six. $100.00 for the waiter for just telling us where the food and drinks were. Frankly the food was not worth the $65.00 plus tax per person either. Just letting customers know and be aware of what to expect. read more

The service is absolutely terrible. The food was fine, but got fries instead of mashed potatoes with the steak I ordered. Trying to get refills on drinks was nearly impossible. I would not have given 1 star , but they made me. Our friends band was playing tonight 4-21-24, so I made a reservation for 3:30p to get a good seat to enjoy the band. We were not seated until 4p. NOT outside where the band was playing in the courtyard, but next to the courtyard inside. They seated others before our group in the courtyard. The only reason I would come back to Walter's is if my friend's band was playing again. But I would insist they honor my reservation time and seat us in the courtyard. read more

Went there because a it was a friend's birthday-wish to go back (pre-COVID). Vegan chili came in a chipped bowl. Yes, chipped but what is worse is, it was an old worn down chip so the kitchen knew it the bowl was chipped but did not care to replace the dish. Right there I knew it was not going to be good night . Tasted like a bowl of salt. Friends burger was, he said 'over cooked' and like 'cardboard'. His wife said it was bad. She had the burger as well. My wife had the tandoori salmon- smelled like dead fish when it arrived. Yummy! There was a party happening across the room and most of the attention was on that large group. We just wanted to get out of there. $200 later. Sorry Walter but we're not going back nor can I get those 2 hours back. read more

Came here for my honey Love because he was craving a delicious kabob and it was date night. Service was friendly and prompt, our food was delicious and the ambiance was nice and quiet and romantic. We sat in the outside patio, it was covered and there was a fire and some heat lamps which gave it a tropical effect. He ordered shish kabob and I got the sampler plate and the ash soup. Also the house red wine which was on happy hour special was actually delicious too! The waiter even remembered it was my honeys birthday (which I mentioned when we were ordering). He brought a candle and a yummy dessert for me to sing happy birthday. I have never had a bad experience here and I been a customer since I first came here in 2001, I will continue to come back. Thankyou again for a great evening. read more

Yikes this place has gone downhill! We were sat outside & right away we could see things that this meal was going to be long. The table was very wobbly & tile pieces were missing. The salt & pepper shakers were dirty as well. When the grains are sticking to the inside of the glass shakers, that means the shakers haven't been cleaned in a long time. We asked for new ones & they were "cleaner". We also noticed it was extreme dirty outside. When was the last time someone cleaned the windows or dusted the place? Very, very dirty. Now on to the food: Mediocre. I ordered the chicken kebabs which sounded great but they fell flat. The rice was tasteless. They put some mushroom marinade on it as well and that was very distasteful. My dad ordered the turkey vegetable soup & a wedge salad. Both were okay. They only have 3 salad dressings: ranch, bleu cheese & their vinaigrette. My mom had the salmon with potatoes & veggies & she was the only one that had a good meal! Our server was great but the people who help him get the drinks/orders out made him look bad. Drinks were awful. We had water & it tasted dirty. My mom ordered a coca-cola & it was flat. We also ordered 2 sprites & they accidentally gave me club soda. Nothing special about this place. It just seems like one of those restaurants that are on their last legs still charging a lot of money to stay afloat. There are definitely better places to go & eat & I rather spend my money somewhere else. read more

I had the breakfast burrito and the huevos rancheros , i did not like them at all. My girlfriend and i did not enjoy the food. Great place! Delicious food and atmosphere! Quick service and pleasant experience! Definitely worth to try and come back for some more!

Came here for Sunday brunch. Enjoyed their bottomless mimosas. Started our meal with crab tacos. They were deli and light. Just needed a little salt but overall very tasty. Gandana bolawnies were amazing. My favorite. I ate most of them the chicken and waffles were very good and you get a lot for your $$. Last but not least the chicken piccata was more than I could handle but very good. Kudos to the bartender for making the best raspberry lemon drop I've ever had Good vibes and outdoor dining made my Sunday brunch a good time. I'll definitely be back. read more

Came here for the first time and I enjoyed everything about this place. David was a fantastic bartender and all his drinks were top of the line! He made us a Feliz Davidad and it was indeed a happy drink. Rudy also recommended some great entrees and it was overall great experience. I would definitely come here again! read more

Oof, so torn on the rating after today. Our server was very checked out, and provided incorrect information to us. Service was very slow (took 15+ minutes for the first two drinks to come out after we ordered them), and we had to request bread after our entrees were out on the table. Hummus and naan came with stale naan...the hummus was good though. Goat cheese and sun dried tomato pizza was very good. Highlight of the meal. Happy hour prices weren't quite honored, and when they corrected some (but not all of the items we ordered) they acted like they were doing us a big favor. Doesn't really make you feel like a welcome guest, but more like an inconvenience. It's all about how you make the guests feel and today was a bit of a miss. We've been other times when service was also slow, but the food and pricing was correct and we had no issues. Transparency, server training, and customer service need to be worked on. We will likely come back, and if the experience improves I'll update my rating. read more

Celebration brunch for our college graduate ‍. First time here and I liked it immediately. Comfortable classic airy building built in the 40s with lots of patio and courtyard seating. The menu is extensive and has American and Afghan cuisine. I was thrilled so see so many lamb dishes. As well as the weekend brunch menu, there are lamb and steak options and many sandwiches and salads offered. I had a hard time choosing and settled on the lamb chops with spinach and potatoes with a side of mint jelly. Lamb was cooked perfectly and juicy and tender. My daughter had the lamb burrito and her fiancé has the lamb burger. Sweet potato and regular shoe string fries were the sides. All were delicious and the fresh bread and butter was great too. They brought a brownie with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce for the graduate, which was a nice touch. Service was excellent despite it being a popular restaurant on graduation day for many colleges. A special place for a celebration! read more

The outdoor dining is romantic and well lit. The space heaters keep it nice and toasty. The menu is extensive and has options for the meat eaters, vegetarians, and low carbers. I had the shush kabobs which were mildly spicy, authentic, and flavorful. The side dish of afghan potatoes deep Fried in a special coating were delicious. The Mrs. loved the vegetarian chili and said it was perfect. The sangrias were wonderfully presented and our waitress suggested really good options. I will come again. read more

Disappointed. Took my husband here for his birthday. We did not enjoy anything we ordered. The service was okay. Our first appetizer had a long hair in it. We sent it back. I noticed there was also some short hair in the salad we ordered. So I'm not sure hair nets are being used. We ordered some plates with lamb that tasted okay--the lamb was tender. But nothing blew our mind. The drinks ordered were both not good...he didn't finish either of them. So it put a damper on the birthday experience. Won't be returning here. read more

Really enjoyed my evening here. We came on a Friday night to hear my friend Alfa's set (yay for live music!). They have all-day happy hour, and on Friday, their combination burgers are only $5. Yes, $5, with Afghan fries (which are basically "beer battered potato slices," according to my friend). And they are delicious. Beers are all $4, and cocktails are $5. I got the Walter's honey blonde, and it's delicious. We also got a coconut stout which was amazing - slightly sweet with a lot of coconut flavor. Street parking - had to park about a block away, but coming from LA this was not an issue. Looking forward to coming back here again! read more

It's been too long since I visited this place. We ordered the lamb sandwich with turkey vegetable soup to go. It was so delicious. The lamb was so soft and tender, very flavorful. The soup was exactly as it was the last time I had it 30 years ago. It IS homemade and the flavors taste like only a homemade soup could have. They did such a good job dividing off the tables for this time in our lives. They respect masks and social distancing the costumers. I wish we could have sat and enjoyed our food with the pleasant music playing on the lush outside patio, but we will now have that to look forward to on our next visit. Andrew made our Tuesday morning breakfast delightful with attentive service and timely interactions. The food was "old school," in that more care was given to taste than presentation.
