Went to this cute little place today in Claremont because we were specifically looking for a woodfired pizza. They've got indoor and outdoor seating and they seemed a touch understaffed for being a beautiful day. It was also a Tuesday lunchtime so maybe they weren't expecting it to be as busy as it was. We were able to prove the menu before we got seated. And our super friendly server came out and we were able to order right away. They've got a lunch special. That is a small personal pizza with a salad and we each got that. Salads came out first and I had the arugula salad, which was absolutely phenomenal. 10 of 10 would eat this every single day. The arugula was peppery and it was well dressed in a lemon vinaigrette type sauce. I am a fan of just plain lemon on mine, but this was delicious. My husband got a union salad, which is their specialty I guess. It's got colored carrots and some beets and some shallots. I thought the dressing was bland and it certainly needed salt and pepper. We asked for both and didn't get either. Our pieces came out and they were nice and woodfired. I feel like they could've been done just a little bit longer maybe a minute or two. The sauce was a lovely fresh type crushed tomato sauce. The cheese was nice and gooey and did not feel or taste like a package of processed cheese. Pepperonis were greasy, but in a real meat kind of way. I had to dab mine, but my husband just went to town on his. The pickled peppers is a pickled jalapeño. Big chunks of them. They certainly didn't skimp on any of the toppings. They were a little sweet and a little hot. Some of the big chunks were a little too sweet for my liking but overall, it was a nice flavor mix Also from a size standpoint, I thought the salad and pizza were very adequate for lunch at around $20 price point I asked for salt and pepper again as well as a side of ranch. This time we did get the salt and pepper as well as cheese and crushed red pepper. But we didn't get the ranch until we were leaving. The server did apologize and said he thought someone else was bringing it out but I pretty much deducted a star because we asked for a couple different things that never came. We decided to try brunch on a Saturday morning. Long story short, I ordered the steak and eggs breakfast. At $38ish, I expected a great meal. It was so underwhelming. 2 eggs cooked differently, one over hard, one over easy, 5-6 potato pieces and the steak was thin, overcooked, and appeared to be a cheap cut of meat. A New York cut would have been great. Wife mentioned norms has better steak and eggs. Called and spoke with a manager Stephanie, not looking for anything, but to express disappointment in the meal for the high price. She offered to mail a gift card for us and invited us back. We finally decided to try Union on Yale after my wife had been wanting to check it out for a while. However, things went downhill a bit when we asked for water--it took much longer than expected, which isn't the best first impression. For food, I ordered the French omelette and added sourdough toast (since it doesn't come with it), while my wife went with the chicken sandwich and steak fries. One odd thing was that the toast came out first with extra plates, almost like it was meant to be an appetizer, which felt a bit off. When the main dishes arrived, the portions were underwhelming--especially the omelette, which felt quite small for the price. The arugula salad portion was actually larger than the omelette itself. The sourdough toast was also unusually hard, making it difficult to enjoy. Overall, the experience was just okay. The setting is nice, but the service was inconsistent and the food didn't quite justify the price. Not sure if this is a spot we'll be returning to anytime soon. read more

I visited Union on Yale for brunch and had a very disappointing experience. When I arrived, I waited about 15 minutes at the front with no staff greeting us. The restaurant was almost empty, so I wasn't sure if I should seat myself. Eventually, I had to look for a staff member to ask. After that, we waited another 10 minutes before finally being seated. I ordered the Standard Burger $22 and my friend ordered the Prosciutto Sandwich $18 . The burger was extremely plain, no vegetables, no sauce, nothing at all, just a burnt hamburger patty. The patty was very dry and rubbery, and I'm not exaggerating. The Prosciutto Sandwich was also not worth the price. Both dishes were very disappointing and felt overpriced for such mediocre food. I've been on a bit of a brunch binge lately (third week in a row lol) and stopped by here yesterday for a late-ish brunch and it was a great experience! Naturally my friend and I had to sit outside because come on, it's brunch and we live in California. Doing brunch indoors is okay, but it's just so much more enjoyable having brunch outside. Clearly the rest of the restaurant felt the same way since the inside was empty. Plus, their outdoor seating area is very spacious and nice! I ordered their Supremo omelette sans 'shrooms and my friend ordered the biscuits and gravy. For an app to share we ordered the "Cauliflower ceviche" which I thought was a little... interesting, but hey! I'm open to new things. The omelette was good for sure! Nothing that'll blow your socks off, but still good. The ingredients inside were all flavorful and cooked nicely. The menu did not mention anything about an arugula salad being included with it and unfortunately I don't really like arugula. The dressing they used was nice and light and a bit tangy. More importantly, the arugula was dressed perfectly which made eating the freshly-mowed-lawn tasting vegetable less difficult to eat since there was flavor to mask the taste. Plus, I didn't want to be wasteful and why not eat some greens for health's sake? Anyway, the cauliflower ceviche. It was interesting like I said, but honestly? It was actually really good. I could do without the tortilla chips to be honest. Just give me a big heaping pile of this "ceviche" and I'd gladly inhale the whole thing. I tried a few bites of the biscuits and gravy and it was delicious! You can really taste the aromatics from the sausage. The biscuits were dense and moist. No complaints here! And what is a brunch without a little booze? We ordered a couple espresso martinis and let me tell you. TomTom in WeHo has unfortunately set the bar at unrealistic levels. I have yet to discover a place that can make it anywhere near as good as TomTom's, but with that being said, the espresso martinis here are probably one of the better ones I've had! If you're a fan of espresso martinis, definitely get you one (or 3). Service was amazing! Our server was so nice and one of the guys who dropped off the food had a really nice tattoo piece on his arm. Turns out him and I went to the same tattoo artist! If you're looking for a brunch spot, you definitely cannot go wrong here! It was first time being here and we felt overwhelmed by the options and wanted to know the staples but kind of left deflated. I have heard about this place and heard only good things, but might not try it again. The purple moon cheese is delicious and we found some in store to buy because we loved it so much. Suggestion: you guys should try to do a mix of the two non-alcoholic beverages because we spilt them and then pour them half and half into each other and it made a perfect combo! Too much Parmesan on the flatbread and the bread for the for the charcuterie has no structure so your accoutrements would just fall off. We've tried a few different items at The Union on Yale and overall it's been a really solid spot. They have both indoor and outdoor seating--indoor space is a bit limited, but since the place is pretty big overall, we've never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes. Service can vary--sometimes it's excellent, other times a bit spotty, especially when it gets busy. Food-wise, we've been happy! The spinach and artichoke dip is a favorite--we couldn't stop eating it. I had the roasted salmon with risotto once and now it's my go-to; absolutely delicious. Our toddler had the chicken fingers and fries and even those were great quality--crispy and juicy. My husband tried the steak frites and wasn't a fan; the cut was fatty and too chewy. We were invited to a pre-wedding welcome dinner here last month. The outside patio was the perfect venue for a large group, service was excellent from beginning to end. We had cocktails/ beers before sitting down. The pre-ordered appetizers were mostly pretty good from two kids of pizzas to spinach dip, spicy cauliflower and brussel sprouts which was my favorite. Each person then ordered the individual main course, choices included salmon, Burger, pork chop, vegetarian, sausage pasta and chicken arugula salad. Bonus: the service is still as stellar as ever. Robin started with the Arugula Salad, a crisp and refreshing plate layered with crispy parmesan chips, freshly grated Grana Padano, and a bright lemon vinaigrette. Then came the showstopper: the Forest Floor pizza--a wood-fired masterpiece loaded with Hen of the Woods, Cremini, and Beech mushrooms, plus mozzarella, fontina, and black truffle cheese, with a savory sausage upgrade. Eggs Benny came with HOUSEMADE English muffin (so soft) and Hollandaise sauce. YUM. A little handful of arugula on the side to feel healthy. The chick club came with grilled chicken breast, thick cut fries, and a little salad. Nicely seasoned and the chicken wasn't dry at all. (I think my home cooked one is a ton better ) One complaint we had- share the eggs Benedict traditional style. The plate came out dry as a bone.. typically Union on Yale is top notch food and flavor.. but the waitress didn't even realize what it was missing. When we asked if it comes with hollandaise sauce, she stated she wasn't sure and she could take it back. The plate came back with some poured on top, very little, but pretty cold at that point. There's a huge pizza oven in the corner where you can watch the chef making your pizza. Also a large bar in the center of the restaurant where you can sit and enjoy a cocktail. I ordered the cauliflower ceviche and the wedge. My friends ordered a pizza (forest floor) & side salad, Jammin' Burger & Frites, and one of the sandwich plates (I forgot which one she ordered). Up until the food arrived we have been chatting away, catching up with one another. Once the food arrived, the conversation slowed down. We were all too busy eating and enjoying our food. For the most part. We each ate our own meal so I can only give specific feedback on what I ordered. The cauliflower ceviche was very tasty. Technically it's a vegan dish, but by the size and taste you wouldn't know it. It's served as an appetizer and definitely shareable. It comes with crisp tortilla chips. The ceviche has a mild flavor. I would order again the wedge salad was good and had blue cheese crumbles and chopped bacon bits. They're serving size was reasonable. The only negative is that it didn't have enough dressing on it. I could've asked for more, but didn't, so no complaints. Lastly, we all enjoyed a coffee themed cocktail. They were so good that we had to have seconds. Our server Sarah was super friendly, super attentive, and all around awesome. Thanks, Sarah! To start with, we ordered a gin martini, a Death and Rodeo cocktail, and a Shirley Temple, along with btussel sprouts. For our entrees, we ordered pesto linguine with blackened salmon, yellow curry (comes with tofu), and a steak frites. We went for Valentine's Day dinner. This is our second time here. Last time was exactly one year ago. I thought the owner might have been changed. Location is great. As far as the food, I tried the fries, which were okay. The Mason Jar was pretty good. The Smoked Pork Belly was perfect!! The burgers were okay, nothing to rave about. One of my party stated there was a rock in his burger and that was alarming. The pizza we had was good. The food was amazing! Woah you can definitely share a pizza with your special someone or grab two styles with a group of 4. Got the Forest Floor and Margherita and it was so good.
