******PLEASE READ!!!!!****** Theyre food is pretty good and as a pretty loyal customer I was VERY shocked and appalled at what I found out. Not too long ago, I went to walnut tree and ordered 3 items. I've known for a while now that they've raised the prices and decreased portion sizes which is to be expected with the price of everything skyrocketing - no big deal, everyone does it right? Wrong! I called my order in and went to pick it up. When I arrived I waited to pay for my order. I noticed the girl write 3 prices down on a blank notepad. She then entered the 3 amounts onto their handheld calculator and the total into the register to generate the receipt, like usual (its always done this way at walnut tree as their register is a bit outdated) - no problem. Right before I handed her my card, I noticed the 3 amounts she wrote down on the pad. I asked why she charged me $14.15 for an item that was $12.95; her response was that this was the price with tax. This response made me think. She swiped my card and gave me the receipt to sign. I took my card, receipt, picked up a menu and went to sit down. It was bothering me so I calculated the amounts of the 3 items I ordered plus the 9% tax that is required for LA county. My total came to about $3 less than the total she charged me. Then, because I'm a math major/detective [;)], I calculated the tax per individual item and added each of those totals together. The answer was the amount I was charged. Think about it.... If you order 1 item each visit and only visit a few times it wouldn't really make that much of a difference. But for those who order more than 1 item and visit quite often, you're paying about $2-3 extra each time you go. $3 x 3 visits per week x 52 weeks per year is $468 per year you could have saved by not getting ripped off. This may not seem like a lot but its almost $500 that could go to something else like a new iPad or phone or something that will last a long time and not "exit the building" on your next trip to the restroom. Okay so I must have been having a really bad day or something the first time I reviewed this place. I am literally OBSESSED with this place... I brought my boyfriend here not too long ago, because we wanted a lazy night in, with movies and Chinese take out... We got a little carried away and ordered about $45 worth of food.. just for us two! Hey.. we wanted variety okay.. and plus we ate more for breakfast haha But I love the food here, it's delicious and authentic. I don't know what the other ones who say is isn't are talking about.. But you be the judge? But this place and another place in China Town are my favorite! So that says a lot.. One thing I will absolutely recommend from here is their WONTON SOUP!!!! SOOOO BOMB!!! People say menudo is the hangover cure? Try this wonton soup with a little but of sirracha and you're set! But don't judge this place by it's cover... You honestly can't even notice it just by driving by, it' so hidden and does not stand out what so ever. Even walking in, its small, a little out dated, but it's about the quality and taste of the food, and that my fellow yelpers, does not let down... Disgusting... I should of known better. Still wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, BIG MISTAKE. Called and asked if they had Shrimp Won Ton Soup and the lady said yes. Ordered to go. Came to work opened my soup, looked decent... took a spoonful of soup and SODIUM galore!!! The actual wonton was not shrimp, tasted like uncooked dough, and they put shrimp in the soup separately. The shrimp was old and overcooked, looked funny. Waitresses there looked miserable and never once smiled. -5 Stars! Didn't even know this place was so close to our house...good option for Chinese food when you want some quick and don't wanna deal with a crowd at Capital or one of those spots. The food is decent, and you can call for pickup too. You wouldn't really notice this place if you just drove by, but I'm glad it's around :) read more

A small little mom and pop chinese american restaurant with old plain 60's 70's decors. Closed on Sundays. Heard their chicken salad is highly recommended. I didn't like it at all. Don't like the dressing. Seems like they just use mayonnaise sauce added some sasame oil. Very plain. They also served special luncheon. Price seems reasonable. Maybe will try their special lunchon next time. Give them another try. read more

Took my family here to celebrate my moms birthday. The food was excellent and the staff was wonderful. Our waitress Lisa provided outstanding service and was very courteous. My favorite dishes were the honey walnut shrimp, sizzling beef, and crispy pork chops to name a few. strangest chinese I've had. ordered a large beef and broccoli and a beef combo with vegetables with $1 extra "noodles". the beef was so soggy and undercooked and it tasted like fish. the noodles tasted like what I could only think charred mothballs could. rice was forgotten on the large dish as well as the soup on the combo. chopsticks request and if they had packets of duck sauce were ignored. I already had an upset stomach and was hoping to have something a little more firm to hold me down but wtf is this? I opened the boxes and felt the weight thinking I scored the best place I'd return to but now I just feel so sad for all this wasted meat. bleh. read more

I'm pretty upset after just ordering food to go from here. I've been here once before and everything was great! Food portions are huge and service was nice. Today I ordered their lunch special to go and got the Sweet and Sour chicken with the $1 upgrade for noodles and another $1 for Hot and Sour Soup. This review isn't for the food because the food tasted good. I received my order and got in my car and went back to work. I opened my bag to see the food was correct, but they gave me egg drop soup instead by accident. And then I noticed I never got my eggroll or wontons or anything else basically included in the lunch special. I've ordered this before so I know it's all included. My work it's too far of a drive to go back, but I'm only given 30 minutes and didn't want to waste more time and gas to fix this mistake. I'm not sure if I will be coming here again anytime soon, but be sure to check your order to make sure you get everything right and aren't jipped on anything. read more

I've been here sooooo many times in the last few months that they know me and most of my fam and friends already. I take everyone there to show them this diamond in the rough. They told me it has been there 40years... low key and small but the food is amazing and priced within my small budget. The service is always welcoming and friendly only draw back is there's maybe one or two servers and when it's busy there (not often which is a blessing) it's a bit longer of a wait for them to get to the table. You can definitely tell that they truly care about their customers. They really are worth being a little more Patient for. I grew up in walnut, and Walnut Tree has been the go to restaurant for Chinese food in my family for years. My Mom went here when she was in high school, I went here when I was in high school, and now in my ripe age of 24 I still frequent this place. My favorite here is the wor wonton soup. I have not tried wonton soup that compares anywhere else. The previous cook "Frank" used to make wonderful dishes. After he retired, the food wasn't the same, but still a great place! This is definitely one of those hole-in-wall type food places, but those are usually the best! read more

I come to this restaurant when I am in the mood for chinese food. Going to other restaurants are expensive, going to fast food like Panda Express is just sad... so instead I come here. Walnut Tree is a family owned restaurant. The service is very friendly, portions are large, the price is decent. The food is amazing... just like home. Do not let the appearance of the restaurant fool you. It may be a little hidden, unseen from the main road, the restaurant may look a little dirty, but the food is worth it. I tried this place years ago and wasn't impressed but I have to say that the food has really improved! I especially liked the Peking style pork chops and the spicy salt pork chops. Maybe I have a thing for pork chops? Service was fast and the lunch specials are very reasonably priced. The hot and sour soup was nicely seasoned. I plan to go back and try other things soon! I've been coming here for almost 30 years now. And i think i might be done. :/ What used to be a place with the best egg rolls & chow mein in the area. It's continually on a steady decline of quality. The chow mein is overly greasy & resembles what you would find at most fast food chinese food spots that sell food by the combo. Same goes for the egg rolls :( Maybe i'm being too harsh on this place. But i have memories of Walnut Tree being a solid & consistent spot for quality chinese food in the area. This place is begging for an update & a renewed dedication to being a real restaurant with a focus on quality. The service is polite & quick. The portions are generous. And the pricing is very fair . We live less than a mile from this place and it's really great! Definitely a hole in the wall, but the fact that it's not fast food and the people are super friendly, it makes it all the better... The portions are generous and prices more than fair. I recommend the pot stickers - they are fabulous!! Orange chicken says its spicy but definitely tolerable. I've lived in walnut almost my entire life and just recently found this place a couple years back...its kind of hidden. They have great prices for big portions and I think the food is great! They owners are always really friendly. I've never been disappointed. Just a word of advice, if you order to go...just make sure you get all your food. There have been a couple occasions where something was missing. But either way for the price that you pay...the amount of food is totally worth it read more
