We called Kaiser for medication for our son. They had the prescription sent to the nearest pharmacy since we were out of town so we picked Walgreens. We went to pick it up once it was ready. The pharmacist said it was $71 and they don't take Kaiser insurance. I told my husband that's too much and we'd wait until we get home. The pharmacist said we could look online for a coupon. She told us about goodrx. I found a coupon for $50 for the medication we needed. I thought it was nice of her to tell us about the coupon/discount site. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars. It's still pricey since it would only be $5 with our insurance. read more

Conveniently located in downtown Monterey, this is a good stop for us when we're on a Monterey trip and need to get some staple items, like water or toiletries. It's never that crowded here and we're able to easily find what we need. Con is that there are usually homeless people on the street right outside which can be a little off putting, especially when you have young children with you. read more

Went here a few months ago to buy socks, realized when I got to the car that the package had been opened since it was missing a pair. Came here again today to pick up a prescription of a common medicine and they don't have it in stock. Aisles are consistently messy, front is dirty and it's a bit run down. Overall a pour experience, and would not recommend this location if you can avoid it. read more

Well. In under a year this location seems to have lost its way. Prescription deliveries that were once free (I just paid the driver's tip) now cost me money AND they don't arrive quickly. What used to arrive in under an hour now often takes several days for the exact same DoorDash delivery. I thought they had found the way to do things right but now it seems that's not how they do things anymore. So disappointing. read more

They do take tricare now but the pharmacist will begrudgingly let you know how he annoyed he is that tricare is your insurance. My bill was still $70. I will not be returning to fill anything here. I can't help that we use tricare with the military, and a pharmacist should leave his opinion and attitude out of filling prescriptions. read more

This is a typical Walgreens with the standard merchandise consisting of what you would expect to find in drugs, cosmetics, sundries, cold drinks, snacks, seasonal items, etc., and if you are lucky, some great bargains. Leave it to Walgreens to establish themselves conveniently in downtown Monterey, and right next door to the Monterey Hotel. Since my boyfriend and I were staying at said hotel, it was nice to stop in as needed for some Arizona ice teas that happened to be on sale for 2 for a dollar! These are the large sized cans! Also, I was glad they were close enough for me to pick up a few things that I neglected to pack. Even though this store is a little smaller than some of the Walgreens I've been to, they still carried a little bit of everything that is important for a woman's survival! read more

I used to like this Walgreens. But the place is totally out of control now. Shelves are less than organized, they don't have enough cashiers, you have walk through a gauntlet of local "characters" to get in and out of the store, and late on Saturday afternoon, I counted at least five customers walking around with no masks for preventing the spread of COVID-19. I don't go into a pharmacy to get sick. Unlike area CVS stores, which have guards at the entrances, Walgreens has no deterrent to selfish people who think it's a joke that a contagion has 115,000 American lives (and counting). This store is a gold mine, with constant customers coming in from Monterey's main drag. They can afford to hire a guard. I'll do my shopping elsewhere, where they consider my life worth living. read more

I've done business with pharmacies all over the Monterey peninsula. I have to say, Peter is the absolute reason I shop at this Walgreens. He is always really helpful. He has stayed late for me before so I could pick up important prescriptions. He has done a lot of extra leg work to help me get prior authorizations approved. Peter is really an excellent pharmacist. If you're looking for a pharmacy, I highly recommend Walgreens on Alvarado St. Ask for Peter when you arrive. He's the best pharmacist I have met. read more

Disappointed. I'm a disabled patient. Long term customer. They have a new Pharmacist that works on Monday...he decided after a year to tell me he didn't think I needed my anti seizure medication. In addition he told me that since I was seeing multiple doctors (my former specialist referred me to my current one a month ago, same freakin medication) he thought I was a danger to myself. Beware patients with any medications that are controlled or may be judged by the Pharmacist as "questionable" Walgreens has a policy called Good Neighbor Dispensing. They can refuse to fill a script, ask you personal medical questions and harass you in front of other customers. Nothing like being sick and being treated like a criminal. The cashier told me the door was open when I went to the back the employee told me that the pharmacy was closed so therefore the bathroom was closed. With the word Green in the name I expected something more floral however I was pleased when I got inside and saw the gorgeous floor, lighting and shelves. Unlike Pharmmaca with its pretentious name and inflated prices Walgreen's is the real deal. Try finding a proper poultice or Jimmy Rub and you will see what I mean. Plus the parking is tied to Trader Joe's and Peet's. Terrible situation. After a day of lost wanderings in Monterey I found myself at the portal of this fine establishment. In I strolled like the cock of the walk only to find out there is no longer a soda fountain at the Walgreen's, any Walgreen's! When did that happen? No matter, I was able to browse the shelves and wile away the hours looking various geegaws and oddities. It's like a freaking Ripple's museum in that place, and now I speak of the customers. I was totally transfixed on a Sham Wow, have you heard of it? I was struck dumb by the thing. When did they start letting lazy eyed felons pose for product shots? I almost bought one. But any-whoo I was transfixed when I was bumped by a youth in a rush to heavens knows where. The moment was gone. I tossed the Sham Wow and made tracks for the door. I needed ear plugs to sleep because the walls at our hotel are so thin that was kept awake most of the night before. The staff pointed me to the back wall where I found 2 rows of a variety of ear plugs - foamy type, waxy type and the water proof type for swimming. I got a box of 10, that should last me for a while. It's a fairly large Walgreen's right in the middle of Downtown Monterey. You should be able to find most everything you need from a drugstore here. read more

No parking. You have to hoof it. Not totally their fault, but when my husband suddenly came down with a cold and needed meds on our mini vacation...yeah, it wasn't good. So we hoofed it, in the rain, with a stroller and two kids under 3. I came down with a stomach bug suddenly. I asked to use the restroom and was rudely told there isn't one. So we quickly walked to the cold meds section...they're out of stock on non-drowsy Coricidin. GREAT! Even after I called ahead and was told it would be "at the register for you!" Service here is average. I have been witness to a few rude cashiers but their candy wall is AWESOME!!!! If you love HARIBO candies like us! We picked up: Mini Rainbow Frogs, Tropifrutti, and Fruity-Frutti. The last mentioned is definitely my new favorite candy! Seriously! I've never seen these elsewhere and this is why Walgreens gets a shot out. We never found our rainbow frogs anywhere except Cost Plus World Market. We are so stoked! read more

Totally sketch... The neighbourhood seemed run down and scary. Drunks everywhere, there is a pub nearby. Yelling and stumbling were common. Inside the store it reminded me of a small run down corner gas station store. Not dirty, but that sort of old you just can't get clean no matter how hard you try. The selection is maybe a quarter that of a real Walgreen's, or at least the kind we're used to in the Rockies. The staff were very friendly. read more

I've never seen such contempt for customers. They advertise sales and rebates but don't have the products in stock or don't offer the advertised price. I am over 50 years past the legal age to buy cigarettes, so when I was carded at first I thought it was a joke, but I was refused as I did not show my I'D. I told the cashier and older woman with badly dyed red hair that this was one of those times when "common sense" should prevail, but to no avail. After waiting forever for the clerks to stop chatting with customers and take care of those of us in line, the cashier I went to asked if I had a club card. I said that I didn't. So...I am a big fan of places that are aesthetically pleasing. Walgreens with their vinyl flooring, harsh florescent lighting, rickety shelves, processed food stuffs, insulting greeting card selection, has just never fit the bill for me. I prefer to hoof it over to Pharmaca frankly. However, I need something in an asap emergency. So I ran from my office down to Walgreens. I walk in and as per usual am confronted with the usual selection of nonsensical crap at prices I am sure few can resist . Who can say no to a two for one pedi - egg or helium balloons on a stick. Anyways, so it is a holiday rush in there - it is a beautiful summer day and the store is packed. One lone ranger behind the cash register, typical. I needed my wares and I needed to pay stat. I go up to the pharmacy portion and I asked the super nice lady (Mina) if I could please pay there - she was so nice and helpful. I just wasn't expecting friendly and kind. Pleasantly surprised. Love it! Always has lots of sales, last time I was there I got 7 notebooks for 70 cents! Its got a little bit of everything from cosmetics to grocery staples (aka: bread, milk, eggs & ice cream, hehe). Its fairly large and the staff has been helpful whenever I've needed them. read more

This is the old school Walgreens that has everything in it accept a diner.

Our group walked in looking for some beer and wine. We opted for this place instead of the other corner grocery store that was closer to our hotel. There was a homeless lady with a dog in front of the store. The beer and wine are immediately to the right (which is probably easy for beer thieves). There's not a wide selection, but we got some Coronas and moscato. We also got some chips, candy, and trail mix. I'm usually not a big fan of Walgreens in general and actually prefer CVS. Pricing is okay/fair. Service was standard. read more
