The Waldhaus is a little cabin the woods accessible via a short walk or shuttle ride from the Banff Springs Hotel. We had made a reservation ahead of time and requested a table by the fireplace. There is nothing like the sound of a crackling fire while you eat fondue and drink beer. We started with an appetizer traditional cheese fondue. It was perfect and not overly greasy or heavy. Great for dipping the mound of baguette we received plus the apples and pickled veggies. You can upgrade to some other options to dip charcuterie, but my husband wanted to try the schnitzel so we were trying not to fill up. I, on the other hand, felt extremely full from all of the unhealthy food I'd been eating for the past 3 days and decided to get the kale salad. Schnitzel: delicious and not as rich as expected. The breading was crunchy and the chicken was tender inside. Kale salad: exactly what I needed. It was light and refreshing and had a great variety of texture and flavor to brighten up my meal. Our server, Julie, was friendly and very attentive throughout the meal. This was my favorite meal of the trip. Would definitely recommend! read more

WALDHAUS - Beer in front of the fireplace. Doesn't get any better! - Pubs Near Me - Banff, Alberta

View is absolutely gorgeous. The meal was nice for someone who loves german food. We got 2 plates to share for 2 adults and 2 children and it seemed to be enough. They seem to be following all Covid regulations. Beware that a drink is about 15 dollars for a double or 19 for a scooner of beer, a plate being an average of 25 dollars, which is not cheap. Service was very average. Our server Gary seemed to be busy even though the place looked slow and there were about 5 servers around. Only came to our table twice or three times and we had to go to the bar to ask for refills and extra ketchup. Didn't really try to talk to us or stay at the table during payment. For a server who usually tips 25%, we left 15% and still felt it was a bit mucI'd recommend going in for a drink and maybe an appetizer and enjoy the view, but I don't know if for a full meal. read more

Great location and view. Food and beer were very good. Service was fine, but our server was not very knowledgeable of the menu, perhaps she was new. She confirmed, when I asked, that the side of spaetzle was prepared the same as the entree, but it was not, as we ordered both at our table. Side spaetzle was nothing special. I would come back if in the area. read more

We were told we could not get seated right away because the restaurant was so busy and too full, even though half of the tables were empty. No one else even came in after us. The food was okay but definitely not worth the price. We tried a few other restaurants at the Fairmont Banff and had great experiences, but were really disappointed in this one. read more

We came to Banff to ski so we stayed at the Banff Springs Hotel and systematically tried the restaurants associated with the hotel. This was by far the worst restaurant. We started with the Haus Salad, which was quite nice. I ordered the Scweinschnitzel with mushroom sauce, which is their signature dish and got roesti substituted for the potato salad. My husband got the "kaese spaetzli" (a German pasta in a cheese sauce that tasted like Swiss fondue). The schnitzel was over- cooked and so tough I couldn't cut it with the regular knife so I had to ask for a steak knife. The sauce was thick and lumpy although it had a nice flavor. My husband's soaetzli tasted very nice but it was a massive amount with no sides such as pickles. He is a big guy but only managed to eat half of it because it was extremely heavy. Sadly, we couldn't take the remainder in an away box because if you stay at the hotel, there is a small fridge but no microwave to reheat leftovers. We were here 4 years ago and our memories of the food back then were much more positive! So sad! read more

An absolutely fantastic food experience. I was staying in the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel and needed a shuttle to get to the Waldhaus ( even though it's part of the hotel complex, it's a good 10 minute walk down the famed 96 steps on the cliff side). The shuttle driver warned me that it was so good I would end up in a food coma and that was no lie. I ordered the ribs dish which came out so soft and perfectly cooked, it was divine. My husband ordered the trout with German potato salad and loved it. The kids' portions are quite generous so one person's order could be split by my two toddlers. Picky as kids can be about food, they still enjoyed their chicken and fries. I especially appreciate the fact that despite being a fancy restaurant, they kept the kids menu simple enough for kids to enjoy. The wine selection was on point and the service friendly and impeccable. Despite the fact that my kids' food was free and we both skipped the appetizer and dessert menus, our tab still crossed the 3-figure line so this is a pricy restaurant as is almost everything in Banff. read more

Great restaurant, but more on that a bit later. First, most of the bad reviews are for the Waldhaus Pub, not the Waldhaus Restaurant. While the pub and restaurant share the same building, the menu and especially service are different and they have different Yelp pages. We sat in front of the huge fire place on a cold, snowy October evening. And it was a real log burning fire, not a fake gas one. Gotta have the fondue. We had the truffle fondue-heaven. Very good beat salad. Followed it up with Black Forest Tort. Food was very good. Ordered a bottle of Canadian white wine which was surprisingly good. Service was excellent. We had reservations and I'm glad we did. By 6:30p.m the restaurant was crowded. read more

This place was off the beaten path, down the hill from the Fairmont Banff. We didn't realize it wasn't part of the hotel until we found ourselves there. It was worth the hike, though. We went for lunch and had lovely service, taking our time over our food. The poutine was fabulous, and we had some everywhere. It comes with pasta, but our server suggested we have it with potatoes, which was delicious. We shared a cheese fondue. On the menu it says "for 2", so we selected two orders for the four of us eating, but we didn't need it. With one of the fondues we added the charcuterie. It was a delicious addition. read more

An absolutely amazing dining experience. Came here during the winter so the winter menu is a little different than the summer one that is on now. Note I was upstairs in the restaurant, not the pub. We had an amazing server, who was super nice, friendly, and offered some great wine selections to go with our food. I really enjoyed the Red, a Masi Campofiorin. She was just so professional and friendly - You can tell she was proud to work there. Simply one of the best service I've ever received. My party shared the fondue appetizer with charcuterie board - Awesome. I had the wagyu shortrib which was one of the best short ribs I've ever had - flavorful, fall off the bone!! When it was time for dessert I asked if they had Affagato and they didn't - But our server went ahead and asked the kitchen to make it for me anyway! She's awesome. I forgot to review this but this dining experience definitely set a new bar for me. read more

After being turned to the curb at the Grizzly House in Banff, and a burning fondue desire we were lucky enough to book a table at the Waldhous. Yum Enjoyed The Waldhous Experience for two with the accompanying wine pairing. This consisted of a Lingonberry vinagrette spritzed fresh salad, black truffled emmenthal swiss chese course, followed by the beef broth fondue with various vegetables, concluded by a toblerone chocolate fondue experience. Delicious and zero complaints. Wine pairings included a German Riesling with the cheese, an Okanagan favorite blended red Kettle Valley Brakeman's Select, and a Fortified Black Sage 2008 with the chocolate. The Fortified Black Sage is a must miss - high alcohol content overrides the grape, which taste very young. It's a 2008 which is very young for a fortified. Service... 5 by 5. Food... 5 by 5. Came here on our first night staying at Fairmont Banff Springs. We checked the menu first and love German style food so we decided to give it a try. No reservations were required which was nice (I think the restaurant upstairs The Waldhaus? needs reservations). The restaurant is down stairs from the main restaurant and was seat yourself. My husband and I grabbed an open table with a beautiful view right against the balcony overlooking the mountains. It was about 8pm and as I'm sure many have figured out... it gets pretty chilly at night here! I asked for a blanket and they kindly brought me one... it did help but I'm a baby when it comes to being cold so we ended up going inside. I ordered the chicken schnitzel sandwich with French fries. This was SOOO SOOO GOOD! Portion was huge (sandwich had two big pieces of white meat chicken schnitzel... I actually prefer white meat so I was pleasantly surprised!). Fried were slightly over salted, but that did not stop me from eating them lol! My husband ordered the pork schnitzel plate "jaeger" style (mushroom cream sauce on the side) with onion rings. His meal was equally delicious. Needless to say, we are basically everything served to us . Husband had a beer (big rock golden ale) which he enjoyed! Service was rather slow and it didn't appear super busy, which is the only reason why I took 1 star off of the review. Despite the "slowness", our waiter and the other waitress who also helped us were very friendly. Otherwise, 5 stars for food! read more

Love the pub! Solid, albeit small, beer selection. Good food and atmosphere. Had the kettle chips with cheese sauce and sausage, which was excellent as well as the schnitzel sandwich which was delicious and huge. Complemented by sweet potato fries that were also excellent. Service was also very good. Hat tip to the manager who sat us quickly despite a 45 minute wait as we were a family of three. read more

WALDHAUS - Holy schnitzel sandwich! And that's just half! - Pubs Near Me - Banff, Alberta

Yummy German food! We enjoy coming here when we stay at the hotel. It is located slightly out of the way... it's a nice walk or if it's too cold, they do run shuttles. I love the atmosphere of this place... it's very cozy. The food is always good. I wasn't the greatest fan of the warm potato salad I had last time with a steak, but I have been here several times and that's my only complaint. I think this restaurant's strength is the schnitzels. They used to have this really yummy creamy veal dish on the menu, but unfortunately it wasn't there last time we went. I wish they would bring it back. read more

The atmosphere is wonderful whether you sit inside or outside though I prefer the fresh air & waterfall sounds outside. The service, food & beer were all outstanding. Is in a bit of a hike downhill from the hotel but beautiful. And to go back to the hotel - don't worry - ask for a shuttle ride back uphill. :-) read more

Came here with friends to discover a friendly pub at the bottom of the hill from the Fairmont Banff Springs. It was the perfect place to get away from it all, having seen the pictures in summer time it is equally as beautiful. We all ordered the Weiner Schnitzel and spaetzel which is as authentic as you'd get in Germany...perfection! The service was equally stellar and of course the weissebier. I am looking forward to my next visit to Banff Springs so I can go back to the Waldhaus Pub. read more

This is the best spot in town for a drink and light supper. The patio has an unparalleled view and is perfectly situated over the 15th tee of the golf course. The nachos are to die for, and a bargain as three or four people can easily make a meal out of them. The wings were small but perfectly crispy. Still, my favorite part of visiting the Waldhaus Pub is drinking a delicious German dunkel and toasting the gorgeous view. Go. You will not be disappointed. read more

What can I say except wow. This German comfort food is prepared and presented like was being made for the kaiser himself. We enjoyed our meal here so much we ate here two nights in a row. We were fortunate to have the personable touch of Angela as our server two nights in a row. Now let's go over the menu. The beet salad we split both nights. Lightly dressed with two varieties of beets, sliced radishes and sprinkled with small cubed cheese. We added the House pickled onions to it. Was a perfect balance of ingredients and size to split. The truffle fondue with sausage side add on. The appetizer size was 40. It was my main and certainly large enough to quell any hunger pains. The side of sausage was small house made items. It consisted of 3 types of sausage and some pickled items. It is certainly the most expensive item on the menu, I garuntee you that the cheese will be all gone and you will not regret having this dish. The schnitzel is paper thin. Served with a small portion of red cabbage and spatzle. It was large enough for me to be full and not overwhelming if my wife ordered it. It was light and hit the spot. The trout dish was ordered two days in a row. They nailed it. Never over cooked, the skin crispy and tasty. The lentils and greens worked well. We did it without the creme fresh. This was done with precision. I really do not think Escoffie himself could not serve this better. Waldhaus has a fair selection of German beers on tap. I went with a Maß of Hacker-Pschorr. We never did make it to the deserts so I can not help there. The dinner is served with warm pretzel rolls. I would like to point out the extremely friendly staff. Angela was our server both evenings. She was Extremely attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. It was a joy to have her both days Alexandre the sous chef came out and greeted us. This Quebec chef has some pedigree when it comes to food. He should be proud of what he is serving. For me to return two nights in a row. For me to decide that I want this to be my last meal speaks accolades on chef/staff/food & ambience . So thanks for making it a memorable. read more

Served with Strawberries, Bananas, Rice Crispy Treats, SpongeCake, Ginger Cookies, Marshmallow, Etc. read more

Wow I've never seen this side of Banff! A small Swiss pub/restaurant right on the banks of the Bow river with 240 degree of mountain views! Apparently it was a private club at some point of its existence and I can definitely picture it that way. Upstairs they have dining room with a wood burning fire place at one end. The downstairs is a pub with TVs and a fully stocked bar. The old swiss theme starts with the exterior of the building and continues inside. We had a classic cheese fondue (emmenthal & gruyere) with cubed stale bread (needs to be stale to be able to skewer) and a selection of pickled veggies (gurkens, pearl onions, cauliflower, and mushrooms). Some sausage and apples rounded out the dipping options provided on the platter. I really want to come back and try the rest of their menu because what I did try was amazing so I expect the same or better! read more

Lovely and Relaxing - Yummy Food Wow- after a long day of driving, what a pleasure to sit out here, take in a stunning view and enjoy the warm sun with delicious food and great service. The Waldhaus Restaurant is large yet cozy place that specializes in chicken wings, fondue and serving you big ol' drinks. So clearly, it's one of my favourite places in Banff. Much like every other place in the park, the view is terrible. Hideous. It'll hurt your eyes... JK, JK. I'm hilarious. The views from the patio at The Waldhaus are breathtaking, the little back hike to get into it is fun and makes you feel outdoorsy, and the overall ambiance is Alps Party Haus. If you're looking for something casual, delicious and adorable, don't delay! Try this place! read more

This restaurant is so delicious!! We enjoyed the jäger veal schnitzel and the sausage plate and everyone loved their meals.

Absolutely top notch German food with the associated top notch pricing. Bring your wallet, because this place is very expensive but well worth it. Like everything Fairmont, it's just that little bit better than the best place you've been, but is unfortunately a lot more expensive than the "little bit" that it is better. Frankly, the sky-high pricing is all that keeps this place from being a 5 star. Now to be fair, the entrees are very generously portioned and are actually fairly reasonably priced. If you can avoid the alcohol and desserts, you might just get out of there with a fairly manageable bill. Now, all that being said.... Black truffle cheese fondue. People, you must have this. It is stunning. Very rich. They recommend it for two, but it will easily be an appropriate appetizer for four. We were very full and didn't even finish all the bread. Interestingly, it came with effectively an entire loaf of bread, and only a very small portion of green apples and mushrooms. I am told that the chef is still experimenting with portions. Either way, this is one spendy fondue but I must recommend it. The jagerschnitzel was also fantastic--a proper schnitzel with a veal cutlet butterflied and pounded flat with light, airy breaded coating. Delicious and rich mushroom sauce on top with some nicely authentic spatzle and cabbage. While I do not recommend drinks if you want to keep your tab low, they have a great selection of surprisingly fresh German brews including Hacker-Pschorr--one of my favourite schnitzel accompaniments. Service was fantastic, our waiter had a great sense of humor and dispensed with some of the stuffyness found elsewhere in the Banff Springs. Great guy, very accommodating. read more

A short stroll down the hill from the Banff Springs Hotel, this little gem is well worth seeking out. We enjoyed the fondue special (salads, cheese and then chocolate) which filled us up (though not a great idea if you are planning on hiking the next day - quite a heavy meal) and I partook on their oversized beers. Luckily, after my wife rolled me out the door after the meal and beverages, they had a shuttle to take us back up the hill to the hotel. read more

So delicious! A good environment and great customer service. The haus sauce wings are a must!!

The food was decent, but not too "German" in general. The portions are a bit small considering German portions tend to be large. It was filling regardless and the sausages were very tasty. The beer selection and finding Hacker on tap were impressive, it was hard to find Hacker on tap even after spending a full week all around Germany earlier this year. I would possibly come back for the Fondue tasting which looked very tasty! The staff was great, and you can't beat the view, the place is somewhat hard to find, you are better off parking at the Bow Fall s(free) and walking up! read more

So tucked way into the Fairmont Banff Springs Resort is this pub and restaurant. It's not easy to find, you have to actually go towards bow falls and the golf course till you find this little German style house. It is worth the little walk (granted, if you have mobility issues, this might not be place for you because there are a lot of stairs and if you take the road, it's a pretty steep hill). We ate in the pub area which is on the backside of the building and it's very reminiscent of an old English pub. There are a few beers on tap including some local, some domestic and some international. I have the French onion soup which on the mention indicated there was alcohol in it and man does it ever have alcohol in it. It's really good though, with a rich flavor and lots of cheese. My friend had the German make and cheese made with spaetzle instead of macaroni. That was very rich and cheesy and a definite treat. The prices were decent considering most food at the hotel is quite expensive. The service was great as well. Would definitely go back. read more

Review for the outdoor patio / pub only. Magical afternoon. Literally, we had nothing short of a magical experience at the Waldhaus. We stumbled into the entrance at the end of the Bow River / Waterfall hike. After the short walk / hike down to the base of the Falls, we spotted a sign saying "Waldhaus" with a foamy beer stein logo. After reading the menu, we made the climb up the stairs to the restaurant. We are so glad that we did. There's something about dining al fresco on a sunny hot day that can result in an incredible experience. On a weeklong trip to Glacier National Park / Lake Louise / Banff - this was our best meal. Our waiter, Seth, was super attentive and charming. We had the pretzel appetizer and for our mains, we had wings, schnitzel, and wurst on a bun. For beers, we had the small (20oz) and medium (30oz) beers - we regretted not ordering the 60oz "Boot" for the true Waldhaus experience. Next time! We didn't want our afternoon in the sun to end, so we indulged in the chocolate fondue as well. Just incredible. Don't miss this restaurant on a sunny day in Banff! read more

I wasn't impressed. The restaurant was beautiful and the elk grazing outside were awesome. We chose to eat in the pub whose menu looked better and I still think that was the better plan but most things were disappointing. The pretzel itself wasn't bad but the $8 cheese sauce was nasty. The cheeseburger was just eh, neither of us finished it. The spaetzle dish was definitely the best out of everything we tried, but nothing was truly a stand out. Maybe the fondue would've been a better choice. read more

Long ago, my parents both worked at the Banff Springs. My mom told me that the Waldhaus used to be the destination at which the staff would celebrate "half-Christmas," which was just an excuse to dress up all fly and drink plenty. Now, it's home to a restaurant side and a pub basement just a walk away from the hotel itself towards the river. You must descend several outdoor stairs to find yourself at the restaurant and pub. While in Banff for a relaxing spa day with my mom, we made our way to the pub half of Waldhaus, to drink some beer and grab some dinner. I challenged her to a game of darts after downing a pint and a portobello burger with a side of onion rings. The dude at a nearby table had ordered a "boot" of beer, which was no joke, served in a massively large cowboy boot-shaped glass. I believe this boot equated to sixty ounces of beer, so high five to him. There are screens to catch a game (though hockey is not happening thus far this season) and the waiters/waitresses work for the hotel meaning quality friendly service. Until next time I'm at the Fairmont, which isn't often by any means, I will look back fondly at my meal and the dart competition. read more

A beautiful cottage in the mountains right above Bow Falls. This restaurant is beautiful and cozy all at the same time. We started with an appetizer cheese fondue with black truffle shavings. The appetizer was a huge portion that cane with a basket of bread, mushrooms , and apples to dunk in the delicious cheese. After waiting awhile for more room in our stomachs we ordered schnitzel. It came with cabbage, spatzle, and vegetables as well. The schnitzel was perfectly flattened and the breading was tasty and crisp. For dessert, we shared an apple strudel and blueberry tea. The experience here was very enjoyable, service was superb, and food delicious. The prices are pretty insane but that comes with the Banff Springs territory. read more

We ate here and while the food was good, our server outright lied to us. At the start of our meal we ordered the Cheese & Charcuterie for Two (off the appetizer section of the menu). Neither of us were overly hungry, so I asked our waiter how large the appetizer is. He said it was not that large. About 15 minutes later the waiter brings over a fondue base - both of us were perplexed by this, so we asked our waiter to come over and then asked about the fondue. We reminded him we had ordered the cheese and charcuterie plate and had not recalled anything about fondue - I made the statement that I said I thought it came with international cheeses. Our waiter assured us what we ordered came with fondue. Okay... so off we go. About 20 minutes later the fondue and meats come, and we eat. Another hour later our entrees show up. We eat and after a mere 2 hours we get our bill. Unfortunately I am the type that just signs and goes on, but luckily I find myself with a wonderful partner who insists on checking things, and she notices that our bill lists cheese fondue - $47 and charcuterie - $16. We ask our waiter over and point out that we had ordered the cheese and charcuterie for two but seem to have received something else. His response is not apologetic but to tell us that we what we got was a "better deal." We assumed that this meant that what we got was ultimately less expensive than what we had actually ordered, but our server's response left a bad taste in both our mouths. Upon arriving back to our room at the Fairmont we looked online and noticed the item we ordered is $24, but what we were served and charged was $63. After stewing on this I called the restaurant and the manager on duty, Mark, agreed to change the charge to $24. While this is reasonable there are a few items with regard to the meal I have issue with, which are as follows: - Our waiter made a mistake and then proceeded to lie to us. - A field mouse came in while we were eating dinner - yes I know this is nature, but not really something I want to see run around on the floor at any restaurant (especially one as expensive). The table next to the door told the hostess, who walked by at the time, but nothing was done. Even the people sitting next to the door were shocked. Makes me wonder if mice could be elsewhere in the restaurant. - During our meal the manager (not sure if this was Mark) came around and asked each table near us how their meal was, but never came over to us. While our food was good, it made me feel a bit undervalued as a customer. In short I doubt I would eat here again if returning to the Fairmont. read more
