After visiting this spot, my boyfriend and I had a post-review discussion in the car and without hesitation, we both agreed that this is one of the best restaurants that we've ever been to. This was our last restaurant that we had the pleasure of visiting in Canmore, and we definitely ended up saving the best for last. I chose this restaurant as the spot to celebrate my boyfriend's 30th birthday because I wanted it to be special and it definitely delivered! First off, the service at this spot is impeccable. They truly hire professional, genuine, skilled, and crafty people here who really care about food and the experience. It was very telling and we wanted to highlight that observation. Secondly, the cocktails. During our trip, we were lucky to have Josh as our bartender and not only did he truly know the ins and outs of the liquor and the ingredients that he used, you can tell that he has really perfected the craft at creating a beautifully presented cocktail, and this was already noticed by the way he cuts an orange. The cocktails here were basically like an art piece and had some of the most creative presentations I've ever seen. My cantaloupe island cocktail even had an herb popsicle in it and the after noon cocktail had mint sorbet incorporated into the presentation too, which was none like I've had before. Food-wise, they start you with a complimentary palette cleanser, which was a mini donut topped with fennel and caviar, which was exquisite and enhanced the experience. We then chose the foie gras, root salad, and mackerel as our smaller dishes and the duck and cod as our main course dishes. I swear to you.. each dish that we tried, we looked at each other in awe because we were baffled that something could taste that wonderful and look so aesthetically pleasing at the same time. Our favorite was the cod main course, which happened to be the newest menu item at the time. We also got the baked alaska for dessert since we wanted to complete the entire course, and that was beautifully presented and flavorful as well. The main chef/owner, Danny Beaulieu, and his team absolutely killed everything on this menu, and we were even able to meet with the owner and to speak with him during our visit here. It was a truly lovely experience and we are big time rooting for the restaurant's success. Decided to check out Änkôr for a fancy dinner. We did same day reservations for a Thursday evening. Service was excellent and they were extremely accommodating with diet restrictions. Several extra touches (folding napkins when you left your seat, getting the door for when your party departed) that you don't normally see these days. There's a 6 course tasting menu ($115.00) but we went a la carte. Entrees are in the $36.00 to $49.00 price range. Cool that you can see the ducks being dry aged. - Celeriac ($18.00) - shrimp tartare with celery root and grapes were refreshing. - Duck ($43.00) - dry aged breast was excellent. Beets were delicious. - Seafood ($47.00) - halibut was perfectly cooked. Didn't love the mushy, mashed zucchini texture. - Pork & scallop ($43.00) - pork belly was next level. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Canada. I have been lucky enough to visit it a couple times in the past couple years when I have returned home to Calgary. I had the tasting menu when I recently visited in the end of August. Each course is so different and well prepared. I loved every course! I was trying to decide between the halibut and duck for my main before going all in. If I was to return, I would get the fish if it was in the summer or duck in the fall/winter. Both desserts were tasty but I if had to order one, I would order the sorbet. Lastly, service.... Extremely friendly and attentive. read more

We just had to go back to Ankör for the 3rd time in a week for dinner tonight. We had the foie gras, celeriac with shrimp tartare and the veal tartare again. It's just that good. One of the best meals I've had in a long time. We got the tasting menu (CAD 118), which was a steal in my opinion. It was a ton of food and every course (5 savory, 1 sweet) was delicious. It was a great way to sample their menu. We started with three appetizers - foie gras, lamb tartare, and shrimp with celeriac. My favorite was the celeriac dish - it had so many textures and very crunchy components that paired very well with the creamy shrimp, and a little bit of spice really brought out the flavors. The two entrees were incredible. The sous vide and then deep fried pork belly was both crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside - amazing. I also really liked the scallop and the carrots that came with the dish. The duck was also so good. The breast was cooked perfectly with a layer of crispy skin, and the confit was so flavorful. It paired perfectly with the beets. Finally, the dessert was a coffee cream on a graham cracker crust. Overall I felt like this and the lamb tartare were slightly weaker but overall the food was just incredible. Service was also very good and attentive. Delicious. Their vegetable purees make every dish awesome, only wish they gave more puree! Every dish was very well balanced with sweet and savory elements and good texture contrast. Portions are on the small side in the prix fixe, which is great if you want to try everything but might leave bigger appetites a bit hungry. They adjust their menu as needed which is lovely. The only other flaw was that they won't cook duck more than medium. It's never a good sign when a restaurant refuses to cook meat through to preferences claiming that it will "ruin the texture" or "make it tough," because I've had cooked through duck and beef that was tender many times (and I've had it be tough too, but it depends on the cut and skill of the chef). We were up in Banff enjoying the beautiful outdoors and decided to celebrate our two year anniversary at Änkôr. Let me start by saying the food was incredible. We both agreed it beats any restaurant in Denver. We highly recommend everything that we ate. Starting with the scallop crudo (we actually ordered two after having it, it was that good) and ending with the lemon curd mousse. The dry aged duck was cooked to perfection. The rendered fat on the breast was so crisp and full of intense flavor. Barbara did an amazing job and we really appreciate the whole staff for being so welcoming, and knowledgeable. Wow. SO not what they think or market themselves to be. Yes, interesting combinations of ingredients - but they don't belong together! Not good. I had to brush my teeth as soon as I got home. And obviously over-priced. And their pretentious "seating" times? They don't even make sure 1st seating is out in time for the second seating. We had to wait 30 minutes. Cheeses good. I don't remember what they added to the tiny shrimp tartare - but not good. The oat flavored salmon? Yuk. The bread was good. Cauliflower dish, I ate because I was starving, but a bad combination of ingredients and the cauliflower must have been in the mush inside a cabbage dumpling, but you'd never know by tasting it that it was a cauliflower dish. Yuck. At least the Bordeaux was good. Don't waste your money. read more

This Ankor team went completely over and beyond for our group of eight! We had one in our group who has quite a few allergies, and wasn't able to do the tasting menu, and they accommodated her fully! I was pregnant, and so couldn't participate in a couple of the courses and they did a great job of swapping those courses for ones that I could tolerate. Paisley was very attentive!! Our waters and beverages were never empty. The chef was a delight! Everything was on point including the ambience, the food, the staff, and everything in between! This was the food highlight of our 12 day trip to Banff and Calgary. I am a foodie and ate at many great restaurants in the area, but this one was the most memorable. The service and cocktails were top-notch, but the food was the star of the show. Ankor has a case where they display their dry aged duck. Didn't even know this was possible for duck. We started with the Foie Gras and Charcuterie both great. The Foie Gras was prepared differently than I have had before and was so delicious I would go back again just for this dish. Other restaurants will surely be using this method too. My picky 14 year old even ate it and loved it. I ordered the Duck, 14 year old the steak and wife fish. All perfect and what was unexpected is the plating reminded me of French Laundry. I seldom take pictures of food but fortunately my wife did. Open kitchen so you can watch how much work goes into plating. This was our son's first time eating duck and he kept wanting more off my plate. Grrrrrrrrr! Don't usually eat desert but when it looks this great why not. The prices for a meal of this caliber are also more then reasonable especially with the US/CAN exchange rate. Pauline was our server, she knew so much and was so kind! Portions are small, (typical of most fine dining) but absolutely packed with flavor! Every touch on the plate was precise and intentional and SO DELICIOUS. My favorites were the foie and duck entree. This place deserves 6 stars! Coming here on vacation I read good things about this place and I really wanted to try it, especially the duck got rav reviews. When we came we learned they had a tasting menu, that came with the duck, the couple next to us whispered " Get the tasting, you won't regret it". So we got the tasting, 6 courses, starting with the amuse-bouche, a truffle, mushroom with quail egg. Second course was a foie gras with rhubarb and other yummy elements. At this point the first two were so amazing we were getting really excited what was coming next! The next 2 apps were a veal, mushroom concoction that was as beautiful as it was delicious and last but not least was a scallop crudo. Now the 2 mains were on the way, first was the Halibut, I think this was my favorite of the night, had a corn sauce and tiny hush puppies, one of the most delicious fish dishes I have ever had. Then came the infamous duck, cooked perfectly with scrumptious crunchy skin and the parsnip side was great too. Last course was the coffee dessert also amazing and was a gorgeous ending to our meal. At first the dishes were all small and I was afraid I would still be hungry, but I was wrong, pleasantly full by the end of the meal. The waitress was really nice and offered her expertise for a really delicious wine pairing. Ankor is a must stop in the Canadian Rockies. Phenomenal. Every bite. Every sip of every cocktail. Every aspect of the service. Phenomenal. We were giggling out loud at how delicious and perfectly curated the experience was from start (literally making the reservation was a good experience) to finish (helping us with our coats and opening the door out). The layers of flavor and textures, even with the drinks, were outstanding. The atmosphere was inviting and comfortable and we were right at home in casual dress. The authenticity and friendly nature of the whole staff rounded out the experience. I cannot say enough good things about this beautiful place and the talent involved in curating the whole experience. Hands down one of the most delectable places I've had the pleasure of dining at. Hand picked, freshly made, the complexity of flavors in each dish is mouthwatering. Not to mention outstanding service with an attention to detail, from sparkling water to diet/allergy friendly options to a macaron treat at the end of the meal. A sommelier for your wine selection and recommendation, a perfect macchiato to finish the night, and conversation for recommendations at other local eateries and cafes. Awesome! We were told by a very reliable friend that this was the best place in Canmore to eat, and we were thrilled to have gotten a reservation for New Year's Eve. The experience exceeded all our hopes and expectations, for sure! Every bite was perfect; the food presentation was lovely, the service was impeccable, the ambiance was peaceful. We were lucky to have had the best table in the house: next to the chef and his kitchen staff, who were very focused, but not frenetic. It was a pleasure to see this little kitchen in motion, turning out incredibly delicious and artistic dishes. There was thought and creativity in every moment of this dining experience. This is the best restaurant I've been to in Canada, and certainly the best between Banff and Canmore . It's definitely fine dining, but not stuffy at all. The menu is incredible and is what first attracted us . My wife and I are without our kids for a few days so we went wild and tried a lot of different things on the menu . The beets and the tartare were both some of the best I've ever had . The foie gras was delicious as well - very refined. As an entree we got the duck and it was mind blowing - the best duck we'd ever had . If you're near Canmore, you should not miss this place .
