I brought my dog here twice, once for daycare and once for overnight boarding. My dog is outgoing, very sweet, very well behaved, and LOVES other dogs, so it seemed like he would be a perfect candidate for doggy daycare.
I asked to see the small dog playroom on his first day of daycare, and I was told if I wanted to see the playroom, I had to call in advance (S-K-E-T-C-H-Y). I wasn't allowed to go up to the playroom to drop him off or pick him up myself. When I picked him up, I had to wait downstairs for 20 mins while they located him. I could hear him barking, and when I finally saw him, he was shaking with terror and BEYOND ecstatic to see me. Obviously, he's normally happy to see me, but this was like "OH THANK GOD YOU'RE HERE!" type happiness--other customers even commented on it.
I received a first time "follow up" email from Wagtime saying my dog "fit right in" and "had a great time" with no details. So I emailed Wagtime back and explained that I could hear my dog barking, and asked if he seemed anxious around other dogs or Wagtime employees (because he certainly seemed anxious when I picked him up.) Wagtime responded simply, "he was fine," which made it clear to me that this person probably couldn't pick my dog out of a line up and had no clue what he was talking about.
I was really hoping to find a place I could reliably use for daycare and boarding, though, and I didn't want to be an overprotective crazy dog lady, so I put my dog's fear down to first day jitters and tried again. I called in advance, as instructed, and asked to see the playroom. When I dropped my dog off the second time, I asked if a Wagtime employee could call me if my dog seemed super anxious or upset. I was told that they wouldn't call me, but I could call them. Red flags were now going up all over the place, so I very firmly asked to see the playroom. They made me wait while they CALLED UP to the playroom to inform the person up there that "a customer" was coming up. By "inform" I mean "warn," because to me that seems like they clearly have something to hide. I was escorted upstairs and when they opened the playroom door, WAY too many dogs rushed up to the door, barking hysterically. Wagtime separates small and large dogs, but half of these dogs were twice as big as my 12lb mutt. There was only ONE employee in the room with all of these dogs, and she was clearly just sitting there, not playing with the dogs or keeping an eye on them. They were just running around manically with nothing to do except work themselves into a frenzy. My dog immediately started shaking with fear--as a reminder, he is usually awesome with other dogs and very playful and outgoing.
I'm ashamed to say, I had a wedding to go to, so I left my poor dog there. In my defense, I was trying really hard not to be overprotective. I kept thinking, "All of these other dogs go here...and Wagtime has such great reviews..."
However, I did call later that night to see how my dog was doing. The employee said, "Which dog?" and then, literally 5 second later, said, "He's fine." Oh really? How can you tell he's fine from the front desk?! Do you even know which dog I'm asking about?!
When I picked my dog up the next day, as soon as he saw me he acted in the same "Oh thank God you're here!" way, then wiggled out of the employee's arms and peed on the floor. Supposedly the dogs can go to the bathroom at any point in the playroom--they're supposed to be out of crates all the time except when eating--but my poor dog was absolutely desperate to go. The second we got outside, he dragged me to a patch of grass to go number two, as well. At this point I was already fuming, but the last straw was when we got home and he was absolutely out-of-character ravenous, even though, according to Wagtime, he was fed that morning. I can't say for sure, obviously, but it seemed to me he was kept in a crate and not fed. He was desperate to go to the bathroom and starving. It's making me angry just thinking about it.
Between the uncaring employees who don't know your dog from Adam, the insane small dog playroom with dogs of completely different sizes and temperaments all together, and the seemingly neglectful care, I won't be coming back here. read more
