My boyfriend is a huge fan of Japanese food so I knew this spot would be my first suggestion if we ended up in Canmore. We made the drive over from Banff and dropped in for breakfast. There were little reserved placards on all of the tables even though we showed up less than half an hour after they opened so we were nervous about being able to get a table without a wait, but our server simply removed one of the placards and offered us that table. My boyfriend got the bacon and tomato two eggs benedict and I got the omurice. He got the matcha latte and I got the matcha milk tea with boba. Portions were generous for breakfast. The omurice was very much a thoroughly cooked omelette over rice and not the runny type that first popularized the dish on social media, but it was tasty nonetheless. The matcha had a healthy green color to it and a very pleasant taste, and even though it was one of the pricier breakfast experiences we had on our trip it was very much a unique one that we didn't expect to find on our visit to Canada. Our server was very attentive with refilling our waters and knowledgable about the menu when we asked for recommendations. Wagashi tea house was such a cute little restaurant that my bf and I went to with his family when we were visiting Banff. Located inside of a green house the restaurant is off to the right side of the green house. The greenhouse itself has tons of plants hanging from every corner and pots as well as seeds and pants for sale which are adorable and artsy. The tea house has a little corner where you can check in for your reservation and be seated amongst a few wooden tables. The staff was incredibly friendly and had reserved the table for us and also were able to accommodate my sesame allergy and make all of the Japanese breakfast items sesame free for mine. My bf and I decided to share one Japanese breakfast which comes with rice, fish and fresh veggies as well as a miso soup, and we also got one of their strawberry mochi desserts to share. Everything from the fish to the veggies were incredibly fresh and flavorful but my absolute favorite was the strawberry mochi dessert and the oat milk matcha latte with soy bean powder atop. When I was in Canmore, one of the restaurants near us was a Japanese tea house in a greenhouse and so we were definitely intrigued in checking it out. The interior is pretty unique, as it's essentially in one section of a large store but it is quite aesthetic. I would recommend making reservations since this place can get booked up; luckily we were able to get one the day before. My family decided to try out the Japanese Breakfast, which is one of the main recommended items. The food was very fresh, and I think the portion size is good if you don't want a heavy lunch. Because the party was so big, They were able to accommodate us with us preordering ahead on their app which I thought was great. The drinks was served as soon as we sat down and the food soon after. I went with the Japanese breakfast, which came in a bento box with grilled salmon, rice, salad, pickles, Japanese egg omelete, and miso soup. I also had the matcha latte. Both matcha latte and the bento breakfast were delicious. The bento was pretty light, healthy, and not overly greasy. They also have eggs benedict, croque monseur, omurice, and waffles. Japanese food in Banff area? I know, not the type of food I think of when I think of Canada either. But Wagashi Tea House is well worth a visit. Or two. Or even three (which some in my group did during our 3.5 day trip!). Wagashi surpassed all our expectations in terms of presentation and taste. Every single item I ordered tasted amazing. I had the matcha with espresso shot affogato, mochaccino, genmaicha, croissant, and omurice and loved all of it. The croissant was super fresh, buttery, and flaky. The mochaccino was the perfect amount of sweetness aka not very sweet at all so the chocolate shines through. The teas were of high quality. Price point is reasonable for the Banff/Canmore area. I love unique and off the beaten path places. I thought I found such a place since this place is in a garden shop. I also recently discovered the lovely Japanese breakfast when I had it for the first time in New York that I posted a review about. So I was sooo excited to try this place. Ordered matcha, iced, no milk just water, extra ice. An older white man was taking the order and he said there were 2 kinds of matcha and asked if which one I wanted. I was thinking wow that's legit to have 2 kinds of matcha. I then ordered the Japanese breakfast and he said "takeaway"? I said no for here and he asked "do you have reservation"? I said no and he said they are booked out until 300pm. So I said oh understand and just ordered the matcha to go. Waiting for my matcha, I looked online and saw they had opening for a table at 1200pm. So I asked my friend and he said no let's go. Waited few more minutes for my matcha. They called it and I asked if it was my order because it was in a hot to go cup. She said yes matcha no milk and something about ceremonial? I said mine was supposed to be iced then she said ceremonial again. I didn't know what that meant. I asked the white old man that I ordered iced and he said ceremonial. It was just a tall cup with an inch of matcha. I have no idea what ceremonial matcha is. By this time everyone is just staring at me like I'm the one who did something wrong and not trying to fix my order. I was so tired of this I just grab the cup and said fine and just left. Last time I came during winter, the menu was more limited. Returning after three years, they now have a more extensive menu and more supporting staff at the restaurant. You can make reservations online or wait onsite for a table. When the weather is nice, they offer outdoor seating with beautiful mountain views. I ordered the cold beef tataki bento box, soba set, matcha latte, amazake, matcha cheesecake, and mochi. Everything in the bento box was delicious. I liked the refreshing salad dressing. The beef tataki had great flavor. Their rice was seasoned well and had a great texture. The soba set is simple but good. The dashi broth was flavorful, and they provide hot water to dilute it into a soup after you're done with your soba. Their wasabi tasted freshly grated. In addition, I also got their rock crab cheese melt and shrimp onigiri, both of which were delicious. I also enjoyed their unique take on the matcha cheesecake. As I was searching for local restaurants to try around the Canmore area, I stumbled upon Wagashi Tea House and was beyond excited because it already looked incredible in the photos. However, when we visited in person, it exceeded our expectations and more! Located in a cute greenhouse, this spot has such an earthy and cozy aura about it. I love the natural light that peeks in and on the day that we visited, it happened to be sunny out, so we sat at the outside patio, which was beautifully surrounded by greenery from the garden. During our visit, we got the maple soy salmon and yakitori chicken bento box, as well as the katsu sando and the plum and chicken onigiri. We LOVED the bento boxes and the quality of all the food that was included. The salmon bento box was our favorite and the sauce they made for the salad portion was amazing. The katsu sando is good too, but keep in mind that it is not the traditional katsu sando with the soft white bread and instead, has more of a burger type of bun. The onigiri were also great post hike snacks in Banff National Park! We also tried the Shin cha and the Sen cha green teas, which had amazing flavor and were presented in really cute ceramics that look like they were created in Japan. In the restaurant, I also noticed that they have Kinto ceramics as well as other Japanese ceramics, which I loved. Without a doubt, this was one of my favorite restaurants around the Canmore/Banff area. It's such a gem and has a lot of charm to it. One of my favorite spots in Canmore! I wish I made time to come more often during my trip. Their food is spot on, top notch, delicious. I recommend making reservations ahead of time because there aren't many tables available. The restaurant is family-run and the vibe is so cozy! I ordered a poke bowl and it was one of the best poke bowls I've had - the vegetables and fish were so fresh and the amount was perfectly filling. if this isn't the best spot in Canmore, I don't know what is. we came here after a nice morning hike at Yoho & we were starving. this is such a small cafe that they only had 3 employees working with a small kitchen off to the side of their front counter. we had to wait over 10 minutes before they could seat us (we even made reservations - which is highly recommended). it was worth the extra wait & we got to check out the fresh seafood in their case. a man in front of us in the line, bought like 4 pieces of vacuum sealed salmon. the girl in front of us waited just to purchase a matcha cone. as we waited & waited, we checked out the dessert case which has all their lovely, delicious desserts available. and as we waited some more, we checked out the items that were coming out of the kitchen and delivered to the tables. we made a mental note as to what we wanted & what piqued our interest. when the table was finally ready for us, we were seated outside in their garden area. there is a small "bath bomb" on the table that is meant to keep the wasps away (we overheard the chef other patrons not to touch it or lick it lol). the chef was the one who took our orders and made sure our waters were always filled. my brother ended up ordering the: tuna takaki and shiso yakitori chicken bento box passion fruit and white chocolate creme brulee matcha and vanilla soft serve green tea sen cha I ordered the: unagi onigiri yakitori chicken sando with miso soup taro and coconut bubble tea the onigiri's came out first. we ended up devouring them from hunger. it was so good. rice was well seasoned & held up great in the rice ball. the unagi was so soft and the sauce was perfection! then our entrees came out, a little right after we finished our onigiris. my brother said his bento was delicious. my chicken sando was huge! I thought it would be made with the Japanese milk bread, but it came out with a brioche bun. I had a massive headache at this point, so I ended up taking a few bites and drank all my miso soup. our drinks finally came out after we started eating our entrees. the taro coconut bubble tea is made with fresh taro and was silky smooth. the bubbles were....not cooked all the way though. such a shame, but the drink itself was freaking delicious. this truly is a great shop. everyone here is so welcoming, even though they were so busy! reservations are a must & the food is just perfect. I found this place nearby our airbnb and decided to try it. Since we have a big group of 7, they didn't have any available table for us until later, we decided to togo our food. On the first day, we missed the breakfast, so I decided to get the maple soy salmon bento and my boyfriend got the yakitori chicken bento. Let me tell you, the maple soy salmon bento is to die for!!! You must try it if you like salmon. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the maple soy glaze was sooooo delicious. We enjoyed our food so much that we came back ghetto second day. This time we tried their breakfast menu. We placed a pretty big order and I think they were also serving a big sit down party. I feel like my salmon for the japanese breakfast was overcooked. I definitely would prefer the maple soy salmon if you have to pick one. We also ordered onigiris and they were all very good. I tried both of their hojicha and matcha, and they're both amazing! I am so glad I found and tried Wagashi Tea House during my trip to Canmore. I came here with a pretty large group of friends (9 people) which I wouldn't advise since the restaurant is in a greenhouse and doesn't have many tables. We were lucky they weren't packed and the owners were so nice though to put some tables together so our group could sit together. I got the Japanese Breakfast set which came with rice, salad, salmon, some veggies, and tamago. Everything was delicious and I loved how healthy and balanced my meal was. My husband got the Eggs Benedict (1 House Smoked Salmon and 1 Veggie, which turned out to be Truffled Portabello) - both were delicious, especially the portabello. I also had the matcha latte which I loved because it had a strong matcha flavor and had the perfect amount of sweetness. This is a very unique cafe and restaurant located in a plant store. One of the places You'll never think will have a restaurant. It is a Japanese inspired restaurant with many famous Japanese dishes. You could get a traditional Japanese breakfast. However, I opted for the eggs benedict. The eggs benedict was warm delicious and I also enjoyed their matcha lattes. There is also a good selection of desserts if you have a sweet tooth. I had a red bean mochi soup and also a housemate mochi. Unless you have a reservation, don't expect to be treated welcomingly by the staff. My family and I walked in for a take-out order for six people, and after placing our order and upon paying at the register, the chef yelled sternly from the kitchen to the register attendant, "No more take-out orders for today!" Mind you, it was barely 9:30, since we got there a little after their opening time of 9am. Also, don't bother asking for any substitutions to your meal, as I was met with a stoic and blunt "No." when I had asked if I could remove a item from a dish and swap it with extra of another item from that dish. As far as food, I'm sure that the traditional Japanese menu items (onigiri, sushi, teas, etc.) are authentically prepared and probably worth the visit, but the eggs benedict that I took back to our place was as basic as any smoked salmon benedict could be. The one positive thing that I will say is that the establishment is a cute idea in itself, because it's set inside a legitimate greenhouse-type setting with plants and random artwork for sale. So, if you're into quaint and unique vibes, then this place is worth the visit. Maybe even the food would be worth another try, provided that I have a reservation set beforehand. I was so excited to come to Wagashi Tea House! It's in a cute nursery, which made me love it even more. We went in a big group so I got to sample everyone's dishes. My niece got the strawberry waffles, they were one of the best waffles I've had and the whip cream tasted like it was made in house, which I really appreciate! We got a a few different onigiris and they all were delicious. The Japanese breakfast bento box was also so good. Let me not forget their Miso Soup, it was fantastic. My parents got the Omurice and that was also so tasty. One of my favorite parts of the experience was getting the tea flights and the host taking her time to explain each tea. Simply beyond expectations -- and we're used to Vancouver's quality Japanese food scene. After 3 days of heavy post-ski dinners in Banff, we thought it would be interesting to pass through this low-key place on our way back to Calgary. Pre-ordered online the night before -- the menu is perfect, simple and not too lengthy. Ordering is straightforward, no payment until arrival for dine-in or takeout. When we arrived, we thought Google had mis-directed us -- until we realized Wagashi is located *inside* the Garden Centre. This actually makes for a really nice ambience, matching the Japanese authenticity perfectly. We were the only ones there at 11am on a Thursday, making for a beautifully serene early lunch with an obstructed view of the mountains (the best view of any meal our whole trip). We were served alternately by a Japanese lady and a Caucasian man, both of whom seemed to also staff the kitchen. Their service was lovely and very prompt (owing obviously in part to the fact that there was no other party). A major advantage of ordering in advance is not having to wait for our orders to arrive -- we sat down pretty much immediately to our bento boxes. Both my maple soy salmon and hubby's yakibuta pork were AMAZING (albeit not huge in portion -- don't expect a heavy meal), and the rest of the bentos were super well made & presented. Our drinks were on point as well. My matcha kinako bubble milk was just the right amount of flavour, barely sweet. Hubby's hot matcha latte came in a beautiful pottery mug and was delicious as well. Our desserts were definitely the best part though. (NOTE: these are preorder-only). The passionfruit & white chocolate crème brûlée might literally be THE best crème brûlée in the world -- not overly sweet like your regular, with a heavenly tanginess from the passionfruit. The salted caramel chocolate tart was very well made, with a thick layer of chocolate. Definitely on the sweeter side in comparison to the crème brûlée. Before we left, we had to try the soft serve -- got a swirl in a cone to share. Rich & creamy as soft serves should be. On the sweeter side -- I would definitely go for the full matcha next time. Also preordered a couple of sweets to go, which weren't as out-of-this-world (at least to my taste): daifuku mochi & nerikiri. Might be out-of-this-world to red bean lovers out there though. We came to this cafe on a Monday morning, and were able to get a table for 4 with no problem. The cafe is located inside of a greenhouse/plant shop, which was nice to explore and gave the cafe a nice ambiance! A great spot for breakfast/brunch. For food, we ordered the Japanese breakfast set, onigiri, and the Wagashi waffle. The wagashi waffle really stood out and had the perfect balance of taste between the matcha ice cream, red bean, and strawberries. The texture of the waffle itself was also really great and crispy, and overall not too sweet. If you like something more simple to start the morning, the Japanese breakfast set is a great option that is very light yet satisfying. Our only note was that the tamago could've used more sweetness/flavor, but the pairing of miso soup and vegetables were delicious. Finally, we ordered their matcha latte, hojicha latte with soybean powder, and the sen ceremonial grade matcha. You could really taste the quality and natural flavors of each drink. We all ordered the drinks with no sugar so the drinks were more on the bitter side which I liked, but I would suggest ordering with a little sugar if you like yours like a more typical matcha latte. What a beautiful place to eat! A tea shop located inside of Bow Valley Garden Centre makes for a surreal and peaceful dining experience. It is a glass (greenhouse style) building and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The food and drink served here is equally beautiful. Maple salmon bento box comes with rice, salad, lightly cooked veggies, and the delicate salmon. The curry bowl is a nice portion and comes with rice as well. It is very delicate tasting and would benefit from a little bit more seasoning. The star of Wagashi is their high quality Japanese tea! I ordered the Kyoto Wakei which is a ceremonial grade matcha. The matcha on its own is very creamy and light. Also, the Hojicha is roasty and clean tasting. In order to guarantee you get to eat here when you come, I highly recommend having a reservation. They have a small amount of tables and do not usually have walk in availability. It may seem a little pricey here but it is worth it! It's a unique location as it's inside of a garden center, but there are nice seats and seats outside (with a tent overhead). We got the salmon bento split into two and it was a great portion for a nice light lunch. They were gracious enough to do it for us and it was plated so beautifully in the bento box. Like I said, this salmon is drool and craving worthy. Perfectly cooked, fatty & the sauce is so full of flavour. Everything in the bento is fantastic, no misses at all. The salmon is a standout though - definitely get it if you can. The matcha ice cream was also fantastic! Great way to finish a lunch on a hot day. It was creamy and great matcha flavour. Since it's a tea house, GET THE TEA! It was in the heat of summer so they had cold brewed teas (Kuchi cha and hojicha). We got the hojicha and loved it so much that we tried the kuki cha too. This is the rare place that truly deserves 5 stars. The food is excellent and has a level of authenticity to it that is very hard to find in Canada or the USA. Everything from the quality of the teas, the desserts (mochi and matcha soft serve), the pickled vegetables, the salmon, and the rolled egg was excellent. Like many others, when we saw how highly this place was rated and then saw it was in a literal garden center, we were skeptical. However, because it's small, it's clear the owners pay a lot of attention to detail with every dish. We got the shin cha green tea, which was subtle and delicate and comes out in these beautiful tea cups. For lunch, we got the maple soy salmon bento box and tuna poke bowl. The salmon was incredible. The sauce was so good and it was cooked perfectly--it basically melts in your mouth. We've never had salmon cooked as tenderly as this. The shiitake mushrooms were super plump and delicious, with a sprinkling of spicy seasoning. The bento box was the perfect amount of food. The tuna in the poke bowl was tossed in their house made yuzu sauce, which had a good amount of ginger flavor--if you aren't a fan of ginger it might not be for you--and there was a lot more food compared to the bento box. The fried won ton strips were super crispy and tasty too. However, if I were to come back, I would do another bento box; the poke hits the spot if you're craving sushi, but I thought the maple soy salmon was so incredible. Sadly, we were too full to try the desserts, but they all looked great. read more

Terrific experience at Wagashi Tea House for an early lunch on a Thursday. We walked in the garden center (no reservation) and nobody was there at the time but every table was filled when we left. Our tea was yummy and I'd highly recommend the Unagi bowl, if you like eel. Spicy tuna poke bowl was tasty and filling, but not spicy. read more

This tea house is located in the garden shop, so just park and walk right in, follow the signs! The staff here are all super friendly, welcoming, and attentive. My water was never empty! The layout of this tea house is so cute and welcoming. Everything is placed so neatly and open. We did get the mocha chino and macha latte but no pics as we drank them up! My friend said the miso soup was amazing and there were lots of tofu and green onion which she loves. I did the soup of the day which was the cheese broccoli and it just warmed up my soul!!! I also got the one onigiri, but I love ume. It's a pickled plum but sour and salty. The lunch bento I got was very filling and the salmon was moist and very tasty! So happy we found this place! What an unexpected and absolutely delightful find in a "garden variety" garden store in Canmore! I spent a year living in rural Japan, and this place absolutely made me natsukashii (nostalgic)! This is authentic Japanese katei ryori (home cooking). From the handmade oishii onigiri to the Japanese grocery items they sell, it was like stepping into mom and pop family restaurant. We missed the breakfast, which we are absolutely going to try when we are back in Canmore. Oh, and just because it is in a garden store doesn't mean it isn't a cute and delightful place to have a meal. Lots of windows and natural light, and the store isn't the noisy kind. Who would've though that there is a tiny cafe tucked away inside a garden centre?! If anything it adds to the serene atmosphere which is quite lovely. There are a few tables, but we were the only ones there when we popped in on a Friday afternoon. The chef came out and introduced himself and walked us thru the entire menu, it was small so it didn't take long. The menu itself is simple, but you can tell they put care into each dish. The highlight of the menu are their lunch-style bento boxes. The bentos all include rice, salad, vegetables, pickles, and a protein of your choice. I got the maple soy salmon. It was the perfect size, wasn't heavy, and absolutely delicious. My boyfriend opted for the seafood chowder and said it was very tasty. He loved the baguette that was made in-house as well. I noticed that they also do brunch on the weekend as well. They have a small freezer and participate in a weekly market selling meat, seafood, frozen and sashimi grade fish, amongst other items (check out their website for their big selection!). They also offer "picnic for 2" kits which include 2 bento boxes, a treat and I think even some hand sanitizer? I think this would be a tasty and different option then your typical sandwiches if you are planning on enjoying the outside. Everything can be pre-ordered online for convenience as well.
