Breakfast/Lunch Stop Worth the Detour I'm a pretty picky eater. Not because I want to be, but because I have to be. I try to eat vegetarian in the morning, and I'm allergic to wheat, which makes dining out a little more complicated than it should be. My boyfriend found this little café outside Banff, and honestly, it turned out to be one of the better food surprises of the trip. We both ordered the Pad Thai -- one loaded with extra protein, one without. I had low expectations. I've eaten enough Thai food to know that about 7 or 8 out of 10 places overcook the noodles. They become soft, mushy, and fall apart the moment you touch them. Not here. The noodles were cooked perfectly -- still chewy with a nice bite. The peanut sauce was another pleasant surprise. It wasn't overly sweet or heavy like many North American versions. The balance was just right. The spice level was mild, which I appreciated because the dish actually tasted like Pad Thai instead of being buried under a mountain of chili. The vegetables were generous, fresh, and plentiful. My boyfriend's chicken portion wasn't huge, but there was plenty of tofu, which made sense since the dish is originally designed as a vegetarian option. The chef seemed to add the chicken as an extra rather than making it the star of the plate. The portion looked manageable when it arrived. It was not. I couldn't finish mine, and my boyfriend had to rescue the remaining noodles. Pad Thai: 4/5 The Vegan Berry Scone was light, not greasy, and not overly sweet. The strawberries and blueberries added little bursts of tartness, and there was a nice oat flavor throughout. My only complaint? It might have been too healthy. A tiny bit more sweetness could have taken it from "good" to "wow." Vegan Berry Scone: 3/5 The Vegan Chocolate Cake was exactly what a chocolate lover would want. Rich dark chocolate flavor without being sugary or overwhelming. It was a little dense and heavy, but in a comforting way that made me keep reaching for another bite. If the cake itself were slightly more moist, it would be nearly perfect. That said, making something both vegan and gluten-free that tastes this good deserves credit. Vegan Chocolate Cake: 4/5 What really impressed me was the overall value. Since the café is outside the main Banff tourist zone, prices are much more reasonable, parking is easy, and they offer a surprisingly large selection of gluten-free and vegan options. For someone like me, who usually spends half the meal interrogating the menu, that alone is worth celebrating. Final Rating: 4/5 Good food, fair prices, easy parking, and plenty of options for people with dietary restrictions. I'd absolutely come back. Holy smokes, you guys. I loved Communitea so much that it was the only place we ate in town for the two days we were here. Granted, we came in for a wedding so were fed outside of Canmore's dining establishments, but still. I think I could happily eat all of my meals here every damn day. They're super vegetarian friendly but also very accommodating to meat eaters and pretty much anyone with dietary considerations. I recommend starting your morning with a maple latte. It's delicious with the perfect level of sweetness to it. I brought a falafel wrap back to my hotel room to have for lunch, and to say I was pleasantly surprised to find it served on a bed of popcorn is an understatement. If you know me you know that my favorite food group is popcorn, and this one is incredible. I asked the next day what sort of crack they add to it, and they said none -- it's rosemary garlic salt and curry powder. I doubt I'll be able to replicate this same magic at home, by you know I'll try. They sell small bags of it by the counter, fyi. The wrap was humungous. The menu suggests it would be great with tofu scramble or chicken added to it, and I suggest enjoying it as is because it's already perfect. And frankly, I don't know where anything else would fit inside that wrap. We returned the second morning for breakfast with my cousin who had never been before but was equally impressed. My huevo burrito (scrambled eggs, cheddar, spiced black beans, creamy chipotle sauce, roasted yams, brown rice, red peppers, & cilantro) was great and very filling. How did I eat it all? Was that advisable? Who cares! I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. Definitely recommend coming in here. Can't wait to return. read more

I ate everything... it was a big bowl too and very filling. But I didn't feel bloated or too full after eating it. I felt SATISFIED! Plus with all the veg in it, I felt good because we have been traveling a bit and not eating as much veg as we do at home. Hubs had the Pad Thai bowl with Tofu and Shirmp. I got a little bite... it was Very good too. Now... is it just like the Pad Thai from the Thai family restaurant at home... No. But it's really tasting... and surprisingly light and filling. This is a great cafe and I wish I had discovered it sooner while in Canmore. I came on a rainy Tuesday for some coffee and food and to do some reading before heading out for more hiking. Came here for lunch with my family - portions were a bit small, especially the quesadilla (only 3 pieces). The prices were a bit high, but the staff was super friendly. It is clear that they are environmentally conscious (and compost!) and market themselves as a healthy eatery. From best to worst: The best thing we ordered was the Chipotle Chicken and Avocado Quesadilla. The cheese was sharp and yummy, and the quesadilla came with red pepper hummus and a side of chips. Overall very flavorful. Avocado Side Up: there was not enough avocado in the slightest, but still tasty. The bread was a bit thick but had a nice crust on the bottom. We also enjoyed the popcorn, which was cumin flavored. Buddha Bowl: this was a little plain, and there was not enough tofu. There was a great variety of greens in there though, and the sunflower seeds gave a nice crunch Satay Noodle Bowl: DO NOT get this one--the noodles were too soft and broken, and the flavor was overpowered by coconut and not enough peanut. Very nice laidback and unpretentious place. I first came for breakfast and tried the avocado toast. It comes with hummus, avocado and tomato. I thought the avocado and hummus pairing was unusual but it worked well. It's served on ciabatta bread. We also stop by to get one of their bowls to go so we could eat it on our flight back home. We got the yoga bowl and it was so delicious. I really loved the tahini dressing and the masala chickpeas. I definitely think this is a good option for virtually anything, breakfast, lunch, light dinner and everything in between. I am going to try to make that yoga bowl at home. A review that's long overdue! Communitea Cafe is SO my cuppa tea! This is precisely the type of place that my hubby and I seek out wherever we travel and even back at home. A welcoming cafe that offers delicious, healthy food in a bright and cheerful atmosphere! We ordered a few things to share and fuel up for a full day of exploring Canmore and Banff: *Matcha Latte *Maple Latte (I mean, Canada = the best maple, right?) *Protein Power Bowl *Avocado Side Up Not a drop or morsel was left on our plates or cups! Staff was not as engaging as usual but the offerings of desserts and other gift and condiment offerings has improved. The atmosphere is not as casual. The ambience and atmosphere seems more touristy. If it wasn't for the food I probably wouldn't come back here unless it was not so busy. Lot better when the atmosphere is casual and relaxed. The brewed coffee is OK but nothing outstanding. I felt positive energy and vibes as we walked into Communitea. The aroma of freshly ground coffee and brewed tea was the first thing that stood out. The second was the great menu. There are some incredible restaurants in Canmore, but this might be our favorite. With a full day of hiking ahead we were looking for something light to get our day going. Thanks to Yelp for directing us to Communitea Cafe! We ordered the Yoga Bowl which came with masala spiced organic chickpeas, broccoli, roasted sweet potato, kale & spinach, organic brown rice, pumpkin & sunflower seeds, and a side of maple tahini dressing. The bowl was definitely big enough to split! The chickpeas had a nice, mild Indian flavor to them and were slightly crunchy, the sweet potatoes were soft and added a nice texture to the crunchy chickpeas and broccoli, the brown rice made the bowl filling for two, and that maple tahini dressing brought everything together. This was a delicious bowl that I would definitely recommend and order again. We also ordered two of their hot teas and enjoyed them so much that we bought a container for us to bring home and as a gift for our dog sitter. The teas were so good that we didn't have to add honey, milk, or any type of sweetener! They have a large, diverse selection of teas and at a good price. The store itself was immaculately clean and modern looking. Huge windows brightened this establishment and the free wifi helped us plan our day of exploring. Canmore overall wins over Banff, which is a transient town built for tourism. Canmore feels like a real town that caters towards some tourists but still has a good base of locals who live here year round. I like that. It means quality is higher and prices are lower. I loved Communitea Cafe's food and space. I didn't love the service by the barista who came over and dropped our drinks off with a little bit of attitude (my husband left them at the register by accident). I get it; it's mostly self service, but we still tipped when standing at the register as if it were a full-service restaurant. Anyway on to the positive!! Great food and big, open, airy space. We snagged seats by the window. There were a bunch of flies trying to escape. Poor things. We had the yoga bowl and buddha burrito as well as a coffee, a blueberry iced tea and some.assorted desserts. The macarons were solid and the cookie decent. Communities started as a chance encounter when we were craving coffee last year, and has quickly become a staple of every visit to the Canmore area. The coffee is delicious, and as a tea fiend, my little heart is happy with 80+ teas to choose from! Our shared favourite by far is the maple latte which is always meticulously prepared, and though we haven't tried the food yet (next time for sure), it smells absolutely incredible. AMazing tea selections, and fun soups and wraps. From rice bowls, to hand rolls, salads, and soups this had something for everyone. Super super cool cozy atmosphere. Came here on a Saturday Morning. Hadn't been before and the group I was with are tourists to Canmore just like me. Arrived and the place was jumpin' There were a few open tables and the 4 of us grabbed a spot right up against the windows. Placed our order for our drinks and we were given a number stand to place at the table (ie: not making me stand around waiting for my drink to be made - I like it). Took our seats along the windows. It's a bench style seating with a nice faux lambskin seating pad to sit on with throw pillows to use as well (very thoughtful). In no time our drinks were delivered to the table by again a very pleasant staff member. I ordered a simple latte, and it was delish ! Nice little leaf design on the top and everything. The place had a number of small children in it as it seems to be very family oriented. Overall, This is a great coffee shop. I would love to have Communitea in my neighborhood.
