Go See The Dog..... Our family of 5 was staying for a week in the Stoneridge condominiums in Canmore while visiting the area around Banff. The Black Dog Cafe is near the entrance to the building. - Overall: 5 (mainly for the drinks...pastries and the dog) - Location: 4 - Exterior: 2 - Ambiance: 3 - Menu: 4 - Food: 5 - Service: 5 - Price and Value: 5 - Bathroom: 3 - Parking: 3 - The Dog: 5+ Pros: - Location: Convenient to most of Canmore...especially to people who live or stay in lodging along southern part of Bow Valley Trail. - Exterior: Nothing much. You could easily drive by unless you were on the lookout for it. - Ambiance: Functional...not fancy. The big draw is the food and their very friendly big black dog. - Menu: If you remember it's basically a coffee shop, you'll be fine. - Food: Excellent. We went for drinks and pastries (and to see the dog) on 3 different days. The drinks we ordered (coffee...chai and chocolate) were fine. The homemade pastries were great - big and tasty! - Service: With a smile. At least one of the owners, a women, was there and she had a great rapport with customers. - Price and Value: Reasonable Cons: - Bathroom: I'm not sure they have one. - Parking: Creative. Most of the people I saw seemed to be staying at Stoneridge. Drivers need to park on the small street by Stoneridge or by the curb along Bow Valley Trail. The Black Dog Cafe was great for us because we didn't need to go outside to get there...the drinks/pastries were great and their dog is a sweetheart. read more

Barista was quick and efficient and got all of the various orders correct. Cute paw print on the top of drinks. Yes, there is a big black dog for you to pet and take photos with. Black dog cafe's HOMEMADE CARROT CAKE is delicious! The barista was also kind enough to sell us an unfrosted carrot cake with cream cheese frosting on the side because some of the people in my family are lactose intolerant. The blueberry muffin is also excellent. The chocolate chip cookie was meh and not worth my calories. At least the cookie was nice and soft. read more

Not a bad coffee shop but also not my favorite in the area. Workers were friendly but I just didn't like this coffee spot that much in comparison to other coffee shops I checked out during my stay in Canmore. I do love that it's dog friendly though!!! read more

This cafe was conveniently located in the resort we were staying in. Tried the tomato basil chicken sandwich, which was actually really good! I really liked the thick cuts of tender chicken and loved that it wasn't salty. The chips that the sandwich came with tasted a bit stale. Didn't really have a choice of chips - just got whatever was given to us. As far as coffee goes, just ordered an iced Americano. Tasted like.. an iced Americano. Overall place is small, but clean. Love this little cafe connected to a lodge close to the heart of the town of Canmore. The shop is run by local dog-lovers and fellow black dog owners (hence the name), and the coffee shop is generously strewn with many framed photos of various black dogs the owner and staff have owned or currently own. The breakfast and pastry options are all pretty standard, if anything, the breakfast sandwiches were quite hardy and perfect to eat before a long day out in the wild, hiking. The apple strudel was incredibly filling, it took me a solid hour to finish along with sips of my London Fog Latte. They also have milk alternatives for an added buck or so. Everyone was very welcoming of my senior dog and she enjoyed saying hi to the staff's dogs here as well. The overall vibe felt very cozy and family-oriented, all we were missing were Christmas lights and a fresh layer of snow outside to make this experience even more perfect! read more

Super cute breakfast spot below a hotel. Parking could be better or else I didn't see it. We parked on the street. But the lox bagel I got was delicious and they had lots of customers come in and out while we were there! My daughter liked her banana smoothie and blueberry muffin which had lots of berries. My hazelnut latte was yummy too and since we dined in they served it in a real mug but since I didn't finish it while there they gladly gave me a to go cup. Beautiful view of the Canadian Rockies out the front window and cute tables out front as well. They also serve wine if that's your jam as well. read more

We wanted to try black dog cafe based on the reviews. I have to say breakfast burrito was pretty good but it was pricey for $18, it was kinda small. Typically if a restaurant has oatmeal on the menu it's cooked fresh in the kitchen on stove top. That was not the case here, oatmeal served was 1 minute microwave oatmeal for every customer. It seemed a rip off receiving microwave oatmeal for $10, i can do that myself in my hotel? read more

Spoiler alert, there are black dogs to greet you at the door! That was such a great surprise. They are very chill, but are happy to see people who greet them. Same as the staff inside. Chill, but super helpful & accommodating. They take pride in what they serve & want to ensure each customer has a great overall experience. It's a small place with a great vibe. They serve Eclipse coffee, which is a local roaster that has some great light & medium brews. At Black Dog Cafe, you can choose if you want light, medium, or dark roast. I enjoyed a spinach & feta frittata that I was informed was made this morning. It was fantastic & the portion size was perfect. I'll definitely be back. Parking is a bit tricky to find, but it just makes me wish I'd come here more when I lived nearby. read more

Decided to check this place out due to the raving reviews on Yelp. I don't care about the price so long the food is good. I very seldom write bad reviews this one will be. To start - They are all liars!!! From over priced food to the most absolute poor unorganized service! Ordered BLT bagel $12.00, Huevous Rancheros $10.00 with 2 small Latte $10.50. The cashier asking us 5 times what our order is after giving her our order. Right then and there I knew we were in trouble. For the price we were expecting the best breakfast sandwiches we have ever tasted. Well I must say failed on all points!! We had to bring out our magnifying glasses to find it, well maybe not, but very close! Latte's was made within 5 to 10 minutes. It gets better, no it doesn't. By the time the little breakfast sandwiches finally made our Lattes were cold! Total bill came to $35.70 for below par food and service total let down. We were better off going down the street to Tim Hortons for the same tasting food for half the price, and our Latte would still be hot! Also wouldn't be waiting a half hour for a breakfast sandwich. Note: there was a young man waiting for his sandwich way before we got there and ordered ours. They refunded his money because he waiting so long for his sandwich that he never received after waiting more then half hour. There was 4 to 5 staff behind the counter not knowing what to do. They were literally walking around in circles not doing nothing. Then having the gall to say loudly they are overwhelmed! It was slow what's it like when it does get busy! The one star is for the cleanliness of the interior. Everything else was a total fail! -Street parking or Resort guest access -Staff friendly I'm all about supporting local in this case I can't. We are here for a week and never will be returning. We are better off going to the deli across the street for better food and price. Better yet, go to Tim Hortons half the price for the same tasting food! There is no wow factor here for over priced food. read more

This beautiful gem of a coffee shop is your one stop shop for all your brunch needs! Their coffee selection is very extensive as well as their Breakfast & Lunch selections. My recommendation is to get a Caramel Hot Chocolate & a Smoked Salmon bagel sandwich! Outstanding! The owners were so welcoming, warm, & just good people who love dogs! My kind of people! The first Black Dog that started it all was named Sadie & their current black dog Shadow is carrying on the legacy! Both beautiful dogs! Sadie would be so proud! Staff is friendly and helpful. Casual and comfortable atmosphere. The coffee is good and so are the egg sandwiches. The banana bread was delicious! The only saving grace here was the friendly service. The staff were all pretty clueless though. They forgot numerous customers' orders and delivered our food to another table. I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. It was small and expensive. It also had an odd and unpleasant taste. My partner ordered a lox and cream cheese bagel. My husband and I love this place! They have some great grab and go options and breakfast/lunch menu items for sit down. Cute sit down vibe with nice art everywhere. The coffee is excellent also. The staff are so lovely here and this place has been around for a long time now. We had a quick little stop in Canmore and popped in for lunch at Black Dog Cafe. We ordered 2 turkey sandwiches, a BLT bagel and 2 smoothies and the total came to just over $85!! I thought, these must be amazing sandwiches and expected at least fancy, fresh made bread, but nope, just regular brown sprouted bread. I guess the addition of amazing veggie straws made it exceptional?? (Although my daughter who had the bagel did not get any veggie straws). Smoothies were also disappointing. read more

Ordered a coffee. Red pepper and squash soup and Thai chicken wrap. The owner and staff member were helpful in describing the soup and Thai order. The Cafe is cozy and clean. The atmosphere is very relaxing and background music is also relaxing. The soup was very tasty . The only thing I found it was a bit pricey for what you got. They were out of medium and dark roast coffee so would had to have the light which was nothing special. The Thai chicken wrap wrap was delicious.
