Yesterday morning we decided to go have a nice breakfast/brunch before heading out to a Mother's Day cookout at my parents'. We decided to try a place with good reviews that was specifically for breakfast or brunch. When we got there and as we were parking, I remembered that not only was it Sunday and there is a church crowd, but people are taking their mothers out. We assumed there was going to be a wait we weren't willing to go through. Our assumptions were correct (assuming doesn't always make an ass out of you and me, MOM!) We noped right the hell out of there. We'll try you later.
Waffle House is not a place you go if you want a great breakfast experience under normal circumstances. It's always been one of those "holy hell, am I hungover" or "wow, I am seriously, desperately hungry. Anything will do...because it's the only place around open or without a wait" places. We were in the second category.
I have never seen a Waffle House so packed. It was chaos. People who clearly don't love their mothers that much actually brought their mothers! Luckily when we got there, there were two stools at the counter, because after that there was actually a wait. People were seriously waiting, with the mothers, to eat at Waffle House.
I will commend our waitress. She was helpful. I know that the steak and eggs breakfast is small and not good. I know that. I ordered it anyway because I didn't want to be too full later. When I ordered it, she showed me on the menu that there was a t-bone that was five ounces larger and in her words, "a much better cut" for not much more money. I really did appreciate that, but I told her that I really did just want the pitiful steak. The look on her face clearly said she thought I may be touched in the head. That made me giggle inside.
I'm sure that t-bone was better, because the little steak I got tasted no more than like some hamburger meat made to kind of look like a steak. I really don't know why I chose to get this when there was perfectly good bacon to be had. I blame the episode of "Chopped" we watched the night before where some TV sitcom moms were making minute steak. Even though I knew I'd be disappointed.
As I said before, this place was packed and chaotic, and therefore very loud. We could barely hear each other talking. So why in the name of everything did one of the employees named Desiree decide to slam things around so much? Dishes, the dishwasher door, anything that could be slammed around, she did. Thanks for the headache, Desiree. You hear that it's already noisy in here, must you contribute? Get your life together.
One thing I did enjoy was watching the cook. He had mad skills at breaking eggs with one hand and not getting any shells in the yolk (jealous) and flipping them in their skillets. I've never really sat at a counter of a Waffle House, so I'm not sure if this is standard, though I'm willing to bet it is not.
My GI system has been all fucked up since yesterday. I blame you, Waffle House. read more
