I hesitated to bother to write this, but I will never go back.....unfortunately i did not go on the right day where the nice man who is always helpful was working, but instead the arrogant and most unhelpful guy at the register with a major attitude...or maybe just with women......described what I wanted...."downstairs aisle....._____" I looked for at least 10 min...no help....was going to get several gallons of paint....so I did get the 3 samples I needed, but will be going right to the BM store.....left and not a word was said to me.... read more

We buy all of our cleaning supplies here, as well as most tools and gardening supplies (except plants). The store is actually two levels as the basement level is as fully stocked as the ground level. I am amazed at how often they have exactly what I am looking for, even something fairly obscure. For example, I used to save my bagel shop twist-ties for putting up Halloween decorations. We decreased our bagel consumption - and so I went to Waban hardware in a panic on Halloween and found that they sold whole rolls of twist-tie material (who knew?) It's a well equipped store but the younger guy doesn't really want to be very helpful. I was in looking for a specialty bulb recently and from about 20 feet away he said, "right there in front of you, just look" not the best attitude. That was the second time. You're 0-2 Waban and your help needs to improve. read more

Schwartz's in Nonantum was closed so I went out of my way to come here instead of a giant hardware store. Nobody inside when I arrived. Found a guy & asked him about battery operated lanterns. He seemed confused & indicated a desk lamp. I found one myself without a price & asked him how much it was and followed him to the cash register, where he without a word he stopped waiting on me and instead rang up a man who'd come in after me and was standing at the counter with a few items. Great addition to Waban center. Surprisingly comprehensive inventory for a relatively small store and it conveniently serves as a UPS drop-off facility. The employees are always attentive without being over bearing and the prices are reasonable given the convenience factor. Does it completely replace those big box hardware stores? No, but it has saved me a number of trips to Watertown, Waltham or Natick on my home project days. Hope to see it last longer than Waban Kitchen! read more

So glad this store has reopened...and better than ever with two levels of the store, and non pushy but helpful and friendly staff. They had the switch I needed without having to wait and then go to a separate window to pay like the electrical supply place...or wandering through endless aisles at the mega orange or blue chains. Their paint is made by Benjamin Moore but I think they can get the Moore label in a day...any color. This really helps Waban be a village! read more

This is a good local store with pretty good inventory. However, there is a fellow that works there that could not possibly be more rude and abrupt with the customers. I thought it was me he didn't like but I saw him pulling the same act with an elderly woman this AM and I am done with this place. If yelp were to invent the six star rating, Waban Hardware would earn it. This is the neighborhood hardware store that Normal Rockwell would have painted--the neighborhood hardware store that makes your neighborhood better. Drill bits and anchors, grass seed and yard waste bags, BBQ spatulas and charcoal, they have everything. But they also know how to use everything. Need to attach a towel bar to a bathroom wall and not sure there's a stud? Need to drill into concrete and wondering if a bit will work? Need an outdoor extension cord that can power a leaf blower? Everyone who works here knows how to get it done, or at least where to look for information. Have I mentioned how helpful everyone here is? A question about parts upstairs is quickly answered with the aisle downstairs (try getting someone at Home Depot to tell you where something is). Most memorably, a mad dash to the door right as they closed while hunting for a specific nut was met with the person happily getting me that little nut so I could finish my project. I sure hope this plays stays around for years and years. read more

Was so happy to hear that this store is under new ownership and are going to have longer more regular hours. The store is clean and organized and the staff was so helpful. The old owner was so nice and helpful but with varying opening and closing times it was hard to know when he'd be there. The new store is great and they promise to be open until 6 on weekdays and both days of the weekend. I will keep coming back! read more

I missed having a hardware store in the neighborhood, and the last owner was a tough act to follow. I was pleasantly surprised - the re-opened Waban Hardware store is great. Staff is very well trained, and incredibly helpful. They've expanded into the basement - so their inventory is more extensive than before. read more

Wonderful wonderful owner, Drake. Very polite and helpful. I am in a wheelchair and needed to install some hooks under my arm rest. Drake spent much time figuring out the size of the hooks that I needed, which turned out to be in metric and not available in the store. So I had to order them off of Amazon. Drake told me that once I receive them I could bring it to him to install them. I did so and he spent adequate time to cut and polish and install three hooks on my wheelchair. At the end he did not want to charge me at all and only after my insistence charged me $5. read more

I agree that everyone needs a vacation, but being one of the very few hardware stores in Newton, maybe someone can be staffed there during vacation. It's October 20th and the sign on the door reads that they'll be back open on November 3rd. Back into the truck I go, driving around looking for another hardware store. I was very happy to see this was re opened as another hardware store. The new owners are amazing and did wonders for this gem location. The entire store was remodeled with two levels and friendly, helpful staff that know exactly where everything is located. The outside of the store was cleaned up and dressed up to bring new life to a dying, dull section that just says 'welcome'. It's is possible to get so many household and yard tools and necessities right here on Beacon St., at an heirloom independent hardware store.! Avoid searching in aisles at a hundred versions of what you are looking for, endlessly deliberating, with lots of time on the checkout line to keep on deliberating. They probably have it here and you'll be in and out in a pleasant way with free on the street parking. read more
