They carry some paint brands and specialty paint that you won't find at big box stores, similarly with some other items, which makes it worthwhile to check them out the next time you're doing some painting or a DIY project. I live within walking distance, it's easy to walk over and get what I need (or ask a dozen questions about things I THINK I need). Stopped in a few days ago to buy one of those "Zip It" plastic drain things, and my description of "I'm looking for one of those plastic things that goes down the drain and has little spiky things" had the nice guy at the counter (initials on receipt are JS) leading me right over to where they were hanging. My friend's dog was with me, the nice guy offered him a Milk Bone and I received great service for my $3.59 item. read more

During our recent ice storm, many stores in my area were out of ice melt. Schwartz hardware had a few bags. I went to get a bag and noticed the store was charging $44 for a 50 lb bag. (Normally, $20). I always regarded Schwartz as the knowledgable friendly neighborhood store and would shop there even though it was a little more expensive than the 'big box' stores, but seriously, price gouging on ice melt during an ice storm? Do some work around the house and end to the "Big Box Store" to get all the tolls, materials, etc. that I thought I would need (of course you never get everything you need because somewhere mid project, when you are knee deep in **** you realize you need something else. This Ace is Awesome because (A) They make it so I don't have to drive all the way back to the big box store, and more often then not, they always have great a dive to offer you if you let them know what you are doing. (B) They seem to have tools that the big box store does not carry all the time. I was doing so work that required a lot of pip cutting and wanted to get a portable band saw. The big box store did not have the name brand that I wanted (because I don't want to buy a new brand and have to purchase a crap ton of different batteries to support a new platform). Lucky for me I stopped here and they had the very exact one I wanted. Despite the prices being a little more than the big box store, doesn't bother me, as they save me so much time from having to drive further into town. Watch out-BIG RIPOFF!! Went in there to exchange 2 Sodastream CO2 cannisters. The way it is supposed to work is you give them your old CO@ tank and they give you a new one. The new tanks cost $29.99, but the refill is only supposed to be $14.99. In the store you can tell them apart because the new ones are in boxes but the refills are not. What Swartz ripoff hardware did was take all the new CO2 tanks out of their boxes and put them on the shelf next to the refill tanks and they are selling them all for $29.99. When I told them that another Ace hardware only charged $14.99 they lied and said that the other store had it wrong! How many people have been ripped off in this manner? read more

I've gone here for years and always appreciated the depth of knowledge and extensive stock. The people who work here know all about patching walls and grout. Until I tried to buy paint. A long time on hold, a different department picking up, more time on hold. A guy on the phone not bothering to pay attention when I mentioned the exact paint number I needed. The thing about paint is you can be exact--if you need an exact number from an exact manufacturer you can just say it. This isn't some plumbing problem that I may be describing incorrectly. If the guy on the phone just bothers to listen to the number it will be correct. Maybe they don't have it? Maybe they have to mix it? You can actually convey that information right there on the phone. Instead the guy just yeah-yeah-yeahed me to get me off the phone. My poor wife ran the errand on a busy day. And lo and behold the paint was wrong. Really wrong. Different manufacturer. Different number. Not even close. At this point it's just wasting my time. They insisted on us running a second errand to return it. I hate my time being wasted. And all due to somebody on the phone not bothering to just listen. It pains me to leave anything but a glowing review of this store that's been great for years. read more

Well, after being a loyal customer for several years, even paying more than I had to vs Amazon and Home Depot, I can't say I'm be going back. Took in a $15 hose nozzle I bought at the beginning of last year that broke during normal use. I just wanted to swap it out based on the promise on the back of the package, but the employee informed me that was only good for 30 days per their return policy. That's not what it says to me, but if the $15 is more important to them when I just want a product that works that came with an "ACE promise", and I wasted a drive and felt foolish, I'll just take my business online. read more

Bad service, bad policy, just not good. I bought a sink pipe-high inlet J bend. When I got home, opened the package, I realized it was not the correct part because it didn't fit the extension tube. I went to return the part and buy the correct one. Manager informs me that he cannot take the return because he cannot sell it with the packaging opened (It was shrink wrapped, there was not an easy way to see the difference in the parts). So I have to eat the $13. He says that it is the policy. It says nothing about the policy that near the cash register (see photo). He says it is a green dot item. I don't even see a green dot, much less know what that means. I want to support local stores but it is hard when the manager says "we don't take stuff back, these are the times we live in..." Home Depot does, Amazon does, as do most stores in this country. read more

I start to water my flowers preparing for an epic day in the gahden, when my hose disintegrated in my hands. Not even sure how that happens.... i thought about a big box store, but knew they're would be so many people. I raced to Ace bc, pandemic or not I needed a damn hose. Holy... how have I never been in here.... it was a good thing I didn't have a ton of time on my hands bc I could have come home with all kinds of stuff. Fairly priced quality hose, and a small splurge on a Yeti mug. (Seriously if you don't have one, you're doing it wrong). Was able to get in and out within 20 minutes. Parking is street, but they also have a lot out back. Will definitely be back! read more

Usually for hardware shopping I use "The Home Depot", but today I've stoped here just for a couple items. I was very surprised that everyone was so friendly. Each person in store asked me about any help. I didn't need it but it was cool. There are a lot of different stuff, including everything from "first need". Unfortunately, they couldn't make me a copy of a key, but its not thei problem - it is a stupid key from Isuzu Trucks and its very difficult find a place where you could make a copy. Inside were very clean, smells very tasty. All shelfs were clean and everything were on the right place. What I can not say about "The Home Depot". And one more thing - there are a lot of outdoor stuff like coals, grill tools and etc. which you always looking for in the last moment. read more

Been going to Swartz Hardware since I was a kid. Yup they generally have what I need. Convenient. A+ keep it up.

This is not the same place it was 10 years ago, when Mr Schwartz sold it to Senneth Berrier. Near as I can tell she buys up area True Values/Ace Hardwares. She may be a lovely person, but on her watch the customer service at Schwartz's has deteriorated dramatically. "The Customer is Always Bothering Me" should be their motto. I've overheard them giving customers misinformation or saying they didn't carry something when, if you knew where to look, it was right on the shelf. And they can be really condescending to women -- although I suppose they may just be condescending to everyone. But that's nothing compared to two experiences I've had there in the past 18 months. In both cases one of the younger guys tried to sell me the wrong part or accessory--in the first it would have damaged the tool and in the second could have caused an electrical fire. In neither case did the clerk seem to particularly care about their mistake/lack of knowledge In the second case the young clerk kept doubling down and insisting he was right. The idea that he was going to keep making the mistake and putting other people at risk concerned me enough that I sought out the manager before I left. I thought maybe he could turn it into a learning experience for the kid -- after all all those all hardware store guys who know everything have to learn somehow, don't they? Instead the guy ( an older guy, he neither confirmed or denied he was the manager when I asked) climbed up one side of me and down the other. How was it any of my business? Why did I care? Well because your clerk insisted on a recommendation to me that, if I didn't know better, could have caused an electrical fire. And if he did it to me he might do it to someone who didn't know better. The Pandemic has been tough on business I know. But at Schwartz's it has only accelerated the deterioration that began well ahead of the virus. There's an unhappy, unhelpful vibe that permeates the place. Schwartz's is my neighborhood hardware store. But at this point I'd rather drive to the big box store than set foot in there. And I never thought I would say something like that. read more

I have never been treated in such a demeaning manner in any store, and I am a very patient and polite customer (been told this multiple times by merchants and customer service specialists). I ordered two hose sprayers from Ace. One sprayer arrived at the store defective, and they offered to reorder it for me. It has taken weeks, several requests for me to explain the same problem over and over again, their inability to find my order on their computer, and an arrogant and rude manager for me to decide a refund for an $18.05 hose sprayer is not worth spending one more minute dealing with this store. The manager actually asked with whom I had spoken about the problem and was surprised I didn't remember the names of the multiple people with whom I had spoken on the phone and in person. Swartz Hardware amazingly has it all. Every single team member here is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They do a bunch of stuff that is unheard of in other hardware stores. Things like fix window screens in two days, make keys that work every time, carry heavy stuff out to your car, provide home delivery, assemble a grill on no notice, and they all do it with a smile. In the paint department Marshall, Mike and the tall guy are really super uber knowledgeable about all the choices of finishes. The difference between California Paint and Ben Moore for porches and horizontal outdoor surfaces. They have a third eye for seasonal stuff. They also seem to stock stuff like ice melt before the storm hits. And oh yes they are able to order one of a kind stuff and actually call you when it comes in. I recently learned that Mike Swartz is an institution in Newton. I think he is the oldest living business person in Newton who is an original owner of a retail business. His father stated Swartz Hardware some time around 1890. All kudos to Swartz Hardware ! read more

OK This review is based on past experience but I realized I should have reviewed Swartz before, and now that I've moved I MISS them so much. This hardware store is the old school crowded, multi-roomed, small old school hardware store that has mostly dissipated because of the giant box stores. You walk in and almost right away someone offers to help. This usually begins the conversation of "I was thinking of doing X". The bright, knowledgeable friendly hardware store guy starts asking questions about your project. Do you want it to come out like this or this..is it wood or plastic...do you need to strip that first....What gauge is it.... etc etc. The talking goes on as he leads you to the right area and begins suggesting products...and gives tips and when you leave you have everything you need to do the job. And if you run out, they are around the block so no big deal. The only thing I would suggest is more evening hours (for us after work fixers) and Sundays since that's the day I get most stuff done. read more

I have been a customer at Swartz's hardware store for many years. The individual and personal attention that is given to you is the Best!! It all start's with the wonderful owner Michael, who, on many occassions, has looked in his cache of old brass screws etc, to help me complete an Antique frame for re-sale. He believes in old-fashioned service, which is carried through to all who work in this wonderful hardware store. It has been a mainstay in Nonantum , in the same family for 50 + years .They are definitley doing something right. Forget the big hardware stores, Swartz's gives you something that you can't find and that is wonderful individual help, even it's for a 10 cent nail. read more

Wouldve been a 5 of 5 before this morning... but probably at a 4.5, not 4. I really like this place and loved them until this morning where my feelings of them were changed just a little bit because of someone in the paint department named Marshall. I was in a few times for mistakes made by another person who mixed our paint and he basically told me I would have to come back when the person who helped me was working to correct the issues... this is not a customer service answer... I didn't make the mistake and it was the person who was working, so the answer should not be that I would need to come back... BUT, LeAnn was absolutely amazing when I came back a little later with another issue and she did change out the order so I could finish what was needed. :) Pretty nice selection here, though, and everyone else I have dealt with here has been great and helpful. I was in and out in about 8 minutes with everything I needed. Specifically, I needed to have copies of some keys made. I tried to get the keys done at Home Depot, but the did not work. I took to Yelp to find a place where the employees were said to be experienced and knowledgeable. Turns out Yelp was right. A nice young man was able to cut the keys for me and they worked perfectly! I will definitely go back next time I need a hardware store! There is plenty of street parking and a lot nearby. read more

Seriously, these guys are great, so helpful! Not at all like Home Depot where you'll walk around for 20 minutes trying to find someone to just direct you, much less actually provide a consultation, only to get some surly overworked person who's covering approximately a half acre of store sections and has a line of customers waiting for help. The guy working the cash register at Swartz helped me carry my paint out to the car, and at one point I was talking to three very helpful guys about the merits of tacks or adhesive for applying stair treads. I'm home-improvement challenged, so the help I get at the store goes a long way. Swartz doesn't have everything, but what they have is carefully selected to cover pretty much anything you need from a hardware store. I've found things here I couldn't find at Home Depot -- and not just the Benjamin Moore paint, which is way better than Behr. Maybe it just feels like I find what I'm looking for more often because you don't have to search over a half-mile radius to locate what you came for! Good selection of stuff, super-helpful and knowledgeable staff, reasonable prices -- try this place out and you won't go to HD again except to fill in the gaps with those few things that Swartz doesn't stock. read more

How to make Lowe's look good: Today I drove to Swartz (40 minute round trip), gave the clerk a blown fuse, and asked if they had a replacement. She found me the packet of two, I paid and took it home. But oops: She gave me the wrong thread size. Took it back (another 40-minute round trip plus parking meter) and when I walked in and put down the opened packet she knew what was wrong. She asked another clerk to get me the correct ones, which he did. But they cost a dollar more -- and she MADE ME PAY IT. If I were that staffer I'd put my own buck in the till, but a breezy "Sorry about that" was the extent of the apology. So much for the friendly neighborhood hardware store. Is the best hardware store I've ever been to, simply because the staff are so helpful. When you come in with a difficult or unusual request, they will go out of their way to help you, and their prices are as reasonable as any local hardware store would be. Brendan was especially helpful to me, offering to do some grinding on a Fastener that was too big, making it fit while simultaneously eliminating the need to purchase new hardware which they didn't stock. This is a great local Neighborhood Place with honest, hardworking decent country folks running it, and I'm glad it's near me. read more

I recently moved and discovered that I lost the nuts holding on the wheels of my folding shopping cart. Thinking it shouldn't be a hard thing to find, I went to the local big box store, but although they found the right diameter, the thread size was wrong, which I didn't realize until I got home. I tried a different chain, but had the same problem. Tried a car parts store at the suggestion of someone at the last place. Nope. They had an idea which size I needed, but didn't have any in stock. Tried Amazon. Nope. As a last ditch effort, tried Swartz. Within 10 minutes or less, they had found the right nuts (metric) and this time it fit! They also suggested stainless steel because shopping carts can get wet and non-stainless would rust (hey, at only .33 each, I certainly wasn't going to argue!). Everyone was pleasant, helpful, and masked. They were easy to find and I found free street parking on a side street. Next time I need something, I'll go to them first, even though it's a longer drive. They made my day. read more

I am a diehard Ace & True Value Customer... and I have spent thousands restoring a car and doing hobbies and self repairs. I will drive and extra 20 minutes to not use Home Depot or Lowes. I just moved to Newton and my first experience here. This is the worst store ever. I ask for help getting a flex line for my toilet, I get a grunt and finger point. When I bring what I found the guy doesnt even respond. I ask if this would work for what I was replacing, no answer. So I paid and gambled. I get home and the line is too long to fit and cant flex to get to the connections. So I knew they didnt have any shorter so i went to Home Depot. Got a guy that helped me match it and get the right one. Grade A service from HD! On my way home I stopped to return, never installed and not even a scratch. As I am waiting in line the woman at the register is complaining about customers going on and on and how they are understaffed. I get my turn and before I can say anything, NO RETURNS ON PLUMBING! ITS POSTED ALL OVER THE PLACE! I tried to explain that could not get help earlier and more complaining! Here excuse was understaffed, I said "Not my problem" She responds with not mine either. Grade A douchebag! This place needs to close and she needs to find a job that does not involve people! $15.26 cost them a loyal customer.... I suggest Depot in Watertown, they seem to care. read more

This store is diagonally across from Newton Jazzercise, so most Saturday mornings I consider stopping in. Almost always, I find what I need. This Saturday it was a battery tester, previously cleaning supplies, a carpet knife and garden tools. They pull all the gardening stuff out on the sidewalk in front of the store (which is why I bought a rake this year). I love to shop locally, and agree with all the reviewers who have described the helpful staff in this store. read more
