Great service. I moved into a house about a mile away from Washington Square, over the hill, and realized pretty quickly that a) I need to own an extension ladder, b) my car would in no way be able to help me move it, c) I probably needed a couple big central air filters at the same time, and d) my wife knows that if she implies I can't do something I will definitely do it. It's a real nice day, and she gently suggests I ask about delivery, so I strike out on foot. Fifteen minutes later the fella at Connelly's is showing me right to everything, takes me downstairs to look over the gutter downspouts because that's coming due soon too, makes incredulous small talk about my plan to walk a mile home with twelve foot of extension ladder and ten square foot of air filter, and then gets super pumped when he realizes that he and some masking tape can make my life easier by turning the big air filters into a big fashionable tote for my other shoulder. He helps me out the door, and long story short I got everything home, didn't wipe out any bikes, avoided that one Bugatti, and only embarrassed myself when there was no-one around. Connelly is now my hardware store for life, and god-willing I'm never going to buy another extension ladder from them again. read more

I was glad to have a nearby hardware place and stopped by to pick up a few items today. There was a nice selection and the store was well organized. The clerk had some trouble ringing up an item and punched in a price manually. Looking at my receipt, I saw I was overcharged for that item and I showed the clerk the marked price. Rather than being refunded, the clerk mumbled, "oh sorry, we'll have to change that sign" and walked away. It seems pretty clear that he misremembered the price while punching it in and didn't want to admit his mistake. If not, the store just doesn't care about overcharging customers. Not a place I want to go again. read more

Jamie is a paint wizard at Connolly's hardware i Washington square in Brookline. I needed to duplicate a color and all I had was a picture of the can with some hieroglyphics written on the top. He studied it for few minutes and went into his shelves. He then said he could do it and I should come back tomorrow. He had me schlep in the mailbox I was fixing up so he could look at it before making a final recommendation. So that's what I did. I sat in the little chair where people sit and look at paint colors. I told him I could wait, and he should help the other people that came in since he was the only person on. It was fascinating listening to his breadth of knowledge and patient kindness to old and young and canine. One grateful customer was worried about local hardware stores close and he reassured him that Connolly's was not. I was grateful as well and expressed my thanks for his expertise and care. he had brightened mine. Win -win. Now I have to my job with the beautiful paint. read more

What the hell do I know about hardware and hardware stores?? Only that the Home Depot is a clusterfuck, and if possible, I like to avoid it. So, who's dumb enough to entrust me with an errand involving several purchases at the hardware store? Apparently, some people are... So, I walk in: the place is a bit dilapidated, has the feel of a country general store. A high school kid at the counter, probably, son Connelly, asks if I need help. Like a gradeschooler reciting a memorized passage, I reply, "3 inch roller, quart of primer, quart of semi-gloss finish white paint..." Not really sure what any of that means, and completely unaware that I must also mention what "nap" roller I need... 5 minutes later, I'm being rung up by, I'm assuming, Mr. Dad Connelly, and bagged by Mrs. Mom Connelly. Very efficient and helpful. When I get home, turns out, I did good. Yay to many more trips to the hardware store... read more

WONDERFUL SERVICE!!! I am a first time home buyer and even though I am not completely oblivious with hardware stores/home improvements, there is a lot to take in. Connelly Hardware was VERY pleasant, and extremely knowledgeable. I purchased 3 gallons of Benjamin Moore paint, all different colors. The gentleman greeted me right when I walked in and offered his assistance. It took less than 10 minutes, and I was in and out quickly, but left beyond satisfied. He educated me on the different paint sheens and recommended what was best for each room they would be going to, and how they would look. He also answered other questions that I had very nicely. My paints were then packaged in a box neatly, and walked and placed into my car!!!! NOW THIS IS SERVICE!!! I recommend this place HIGHLY, and will definitely be coming back for any future purchases. read more

In relationships in life, it is necessary to establish your bondaries and to have certain 'deal brakers' thanings that you will just put up with. One thing with a hardware store is that the owners must realize that they CAN NOT expect to keep bankers' hours. Unless you are a housewife, there is no way most working folks will be able to get here by 5:30 PM on weekdays. Being completely closed on Sundays is an absolute deal beaker. Do yourself a favor and take a short walk to Cleveland Circle Hardware, they will most likely be open while Conelly is closed. read more

I really wanted Connelly to be my hardware/housewares/odds and ends go-to since it's a few feet from my apartment and it dons an exterior that (to it's advantage) hasn't been updated since Mom and Pop Connelly probably opened the doors for business back in the sixties. It's laid out a bit haphazardly and it's on the disorganized side... finding what you need may be difficult, but if you have some time on your hands and can spare the extra time to seek your things out, it's likely that you will eventually find what you are looking for. Maybe. Though I respect that their limited store hours are more akin to how things used to be years ago (the store is not open when I come home from work on weekdays - around 6pm, and I think Sunday hours are a no-no, leaving my chances for an all around hardware store shopping spree fiesta to be condensed to a Saturday), given all of the above, I'd just as soon go down the block any which way and find a True Value and get what I need there. read more

Eh. Consistently lets me down with their selection in all areas. But they're closer than Aborn, so I almost always try them. It's the difference between a quick walk and a quick drive. But I almost always wind up going to Aborn, which has a better selection and more knowledgeable staff. However, Connolly is a Benjamin Moore supplier, which is handy if you're doing any painting. read more

I recently moved and Connelly Hardware is my new local hardware store. Every time I've gone in here the staff has been super helpful and patient and friendly. I know less than nothing about home repair / hardware stuff (you can tell by the way I just typed the phrase "hardware stuff") and they've never made me feel bad about my significant absence of knowledge. And they don't make me feel like I'm getting ripped off: when I've had questions they've explained things clearly. Quick and nice service and I'm sure I'll be back whenever I need to be (which hopefully isn't too too often!). read more

This place is a gift! I needed advice on stain for a planter made out of pressure treated wood and patching peeling stucco on my foundation. While Home Depot used to an excellent source for advice - staffed with retired contractors and skilled tradesmen - they are now worthless, staffed with either the village idiot or clueless millennial that never picked up a hammer. Completely the opposite experience at Connolly Hardware yesterday. Holly was incredibly knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Will now make it a point to shop there first and do everything I can to keep them in business and in our neighborhood! read more

Terrible customer service! Went to buy white paint to paint the inside of a closet. I needed a quart to touch up some spots. No price on the can. At the register was told it would be $22. I told them this was for the inside of a closet and would like the cheapest. They had another can for $18. I told them I was sorry but it was too much for a quart of basic white for the inside of a closet and I would go to Home Depot. As I walked out the door one of them called me "cheapskate". Just moved to the neighborhood and have been to the store several times. Each time an attitude from the clerks. I'm assuming the owner's sons. Great service! I walked in to find a particular nail that I needed and the person at the counter spent the time it took to help me find it. We also talked about the project I was working on and he gave me a few tips to help make it easier. So helpful and nice - fantastic neighborhood shop that I will go back to again and again. Getting the hardware for your home improvement project should not be harder than the home improvement project itself, which is why it's wonderful having a go-to hardware store just around the block. Sure things are cheaper and more abundant at the mega hardware stores, but it's so much easier to run across the street instead of wasting half a day wandering the aisles of Home Depot in order to change a light bulb or take care of more significant home repair projects. Great customer service and attention to detail! I had my keys made here, and they encouraged me to bring them back, if they weren't a perfect fit. They were, but I appreciated that they stand by their products! The only downside is you have to buy $10 worth of stuff to use a credit card. read more

If you are used to stores like Lowe's, this store will feel a bit clutter and cramped when you first walk in; however, you shouldn't let that deter you, as the people are very knowledgeable and helpful. ...and I needed the help. To put it bluntly, if plumbing or fixtures don't t work and I start fiddling with them to try to figure out why, I'm more likely to turn it into a space ship than I am to diagnosis the problem. That's where the people at Connelly have helped me out on more than one occasion. I walk in and say, "X stopped working. It looks like a dinosaur took a bite out of it. I think I need to replace the thing the looks like Captain Hook's hand. What is that and do you think I can do it myself?" They haven't steered me wrong yet and nothing they've recommended has been very expensive, so I trust their judgment. read more

This was my third or fourth visit spaced out over a year. Always super helpful. Takes the time to figure out exactly what you need and then take you to the item even when it only costs a few dollars. I am not handy at all so I ask questions that I know are beyond dumb, but they act like the questions are perfectly reasonable. Also you might assume that going to an independent small hardware store like this means paying a huge premium over a chain (which would still be worth it for the help), but it doesn't. Their prices are in line with others. FYI, their snow shovels are cheaper than the ones at the supermarket and far better quality. I was in a super bad mood (see the review I created this account to leave) when I realized I was near them and should stop in for something and left happy. read more

I like this place a lot... They've always had what I needed from painting supplies to lawn care products - even a turkey baster. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and has typically been pretty informative. Unfortunately, their hours are not the greatest, but I would much rather put in the effort to catch Connelly's when it's open than go to Home Depot. read more

This is the place to go if you need a few nails or washers, and not a box of 10,000. I've had paint mixed and glass cut, and have gotten good directions on how to fix assorted odd things that go wrong in an old house. I've been coming here since I moved to Brookline 9 years ago and the Connelly's are some of the best people I've ever dealt with in a retail setting. Not only do they have an amazing amount of stuff for a small store, but they will special order things for you as well. Also they've been around for so long they know where you can get almost anything in and around Brookline. Family owned for over 50 years and you can tell, it seems like they know almost everyone who walks in the door. I use this hardware, for household and lawn maintenance when I can. The service is always expert and friendly. I needed a wrench to loosen a stalled garbage dispenser and the helpful guy there just sold me a simple large hex wrench for $1.20. And it worked perfectly. I had a great experience with Connelly, I had bought a granny cart from Target that was, um, poorly made (to be polite)... so first I called Connelly to see if they had a better granny cart, and the guy was very helpful, took the time to go see if they had some, check the price, etc. I didn't feel rushed as I usually do when I call a business. I would like to give no stars to this longstanding fixture in Brookline with the rude heavy set older blonde lady that has been there as along as I can remember. When I walked in I heard her rude and completely unhelpful response to the 2 people ahead of me and I knew she would be of no help to me either. Literally, she had no time to spin my can of paint and came up with ridiculous excuses like the lid wasn't on right--it absolutely was on right. I do this at Home depot all the time without problems. I will just get my Manhattan Tan, Ben Moore paint copied at Home Depot and all Ben Moore colors from here on. Connelly's must not be making the money they need and should wise up and provide customer service we expect from a local store. Otherwise, close up! read more

Its so great to have a competent, helpful hardware store in the area. The people who work in the store are completely invested in helping their customers and it makes the shopping experience so much easier than most hardware giants. Its true they don't have as much as the large players and I suppose thats a drawback, but I am usually surprised at how much they do have. We've used Connelly for dozens of projects over the past 16 years, from minor repairs to major renovations. The staff are consistently friendly and helpful and they almost always have what we are looking for at very reasonable prices. We hope this independent hareware store will remain in Brookline for a long, long time! My only complaint: they are closed on Sundays. OK if you need help with paint this is the place to go. They are incredibly helpful if you ask, they can match colors with a computer, or if like me the paint chip isn't big enough, they may be able to do it by eye (perfect match for my paint chip). You'd be silly to do anywhere else for paint. read more

Very good local store. They're able to match your paint 99%. They also make the best keys while other places always make you take a trip back to get them adjusted. The staff is mixed, some employees are friendlier than others, but they get the job done. I have never ever been compelled to write a review online, although I use multiple review sites on a daily basis, but I feel compelled to write about Connelly Hardware, where the service is excellent and if you ask, the friendly and knwledgeable staff can find you just about anything, even if they have to move a display and climb a ladder to get to it. Where else can you have someone find you the exact size bolt or glass cover to fit your ancient lighting fixture, and you only have to buy one screw if you need it? I have lived in Brookline for over 20 years. I started going there because it was around the corner and our landlord had an account. He travelled a lot and directed us to go there if we need anything and to ask for things we did not see. Being young newlyweds, we decided to fix the place up and got his blessing for a reasonable budget to paint and do some other things. I have been a homeowner for 18 years and a landlord for 10 and we always go to Connelly's first. Because they are small, they occassionally don't have the odd item, but they can alsways tell you which of the other neighborhood stores does. In the late 1980s, a highlight of my handy dad's visit from out of state would be our 8 am trip to Connelly's to prepare for a home improvement project. Dad, who lives in a suburb populated by big boxes, but grew up in a city, loved buying exactly the number of screws and nuts we needed for pennies a piece and chatting with Mr. Connelly, who ran the place with his daughter. When Mr. Connelly passed, Cathy took over running the place with her friendly and helpful long-time employees. They helped me pick wallpaper for the nursery and pick the right paint when we moved into a 'new' old house, introduced us to various tradesmen and advised on rental, versus homeowner quality products. Cathy and her then young employees cooed over my new baby and now wave at him on his way to high school. We now share pictures of Cathy's grandchildren and those young employees' babies, toddlers and school children of their own. as other's have said, Connelly's is a little worn, but it is a step back in time in terms of service and finding the right items to fix or supply the older homes in the area. read more

Just for sarters: they have doctored up paint I bought at another hardware store so it was the shade I actually wanted, offered me the tel. number of a plumber when I went in to buy a toilet-unplugging product. I said 'don't you want to sell me something?' and an employee said 'don't you want what's going to work?'. They are always cheerful and happy to help. Creative at trying to find solutions to tough problems. You always get helped right away, so you don't have to wander around trying to find something on your own. I wish they were open a little later in the day and on Sundays, but it is worth waiting for the hours they are open for the service, friendliness and honesty. Very knowledgeable staff. Sometimes flexible about the credit/debit limit - but you can always use another roll of painters tape or a cleaning product to get to the minimum charge. Connelly Hardware is a national treasure. It harkens back to the day when the most important thing was the customer, helping her find what she needs, great advise and they are not about the money. They are about people. I love their selection and that I don't have to walk miles inside a store to get a screw or a garden hose. I live an hour away and wish I were closer. I go there every time I can. I'm going to be repainting my bedroom and I am told by many professional painters that Benjamin Moore is the best so I'll be visiting the Connelly's again soon. The store has been there almost 100 years....amazing when so many chains have put the Mom and Pop businesses out of business! I read some of the other reviews about the hours. I'm glad they value their own families enough to have Sunday dinner with them. We've become to materialistic in this society. I will always give them any business I can. P.S.
