Neither side of the store is particularly big, but I've usually been able to find what I need (tools, random sized screws, laundry bag, canning supplies, cooking implements, you name it) although choices are limited. I'm willing to choose from a limited selection to support a neighborhood business, and the convenience is worth a lot. HOWEVER, as a small neighborhood business, service should be better. Service isn't rude, but it isn't friendly either. The owner or an employee is usually available to show you where to find what you are looking for, but don't expect much in the way of project or product advice (which you usually can get at hardware stores and even at the big box stores). As an example, on a recent weekend I called to ask if they could cut down a couple of wooden boards for a project I was working on. I was told sure, just make sure everything is measured because they don't help with that. No problem. Except that the employee who was sent to do the cutting spoke didn't seem to understand when we asked him to position the wood so the saw blade would be to the outside of our line, which resulted in too much being cut. On top of that the blade was super dull, and splintered my wood pretty badly, and the employee also didn't understand when I asked him to flip the wood for the remaining cuts so at least the splintering would be on the back. In the end my pieces were cut roughly to size, so I figured I couldn't complain too much - until I was charged $10 for the service! Home Depot does it free, with much better equipment, and they'll even help out with measuring. The neighborhood hardware stores understandably can't compete against the big guys on selection or price, but they should be able to provide superior service, and Aborn falls short.

I bought the item, and had asked the young (new) associate to kindly show me how to use it / set it up. He was in the process of doing so, when the owner gruffly took it out of his hands and said 'we don't do that'.. I asked the owner to kindly show me how it works, and he refused. He was a) totally unhelpful and b) very rude to both me, and the poor associate who has unfortunately chosen to work in this terrible work environment. I came out of the store shaken and feeling like i would never return to this store if it was the last hardware store on the planet.

I…read moremoved into a house about a mile away from Washington Square, over the hill, and realized pretty quickly that a) I need to own an extension ladder, b) my car would in no way be able to help me move it, c) I probably needed a couple big central air filters at the same time, and d) my wife knows that if she implies I can't do something I will definitely do it. It's a real nice day, and she gently suggests I ask about delivery, so I strike out on foot. Fifteen minutes later the fella at Connelly's is showing me right to everything, takes me downstairs to look over the gutter downspouts because that's coming due soon too, makes incredulous small talk about my plan to walk a mile home with twelve foot of extension ladder and ten square foot of air filter, and then gets super pumped when he realizes that he and some masking tape can make my life easier by turning the big air filters into a big fashionable tote for my other shoulder. He helps me out the door, and long story short I got everything home, didn't wipe out any bikes, avoided that one Bugatti, and only embarrassed myself when there was no-one around. Connelly is now my hardware store for life, and god-willing I'm never going to buy another extension ladder from them again.

The person who answered the Hardware phone line checked the shelves in person, since I was driving in from a distance. "Yes, it was on the shelves", he said. Once in the store, a young employee asked me what I was looking for. When I told him, he said "the store did not carry that product." Fortunately I knew better, and told him that I already had verified that it was on the shelves somewhere. He walked away, leaving me to find it on my own, which I eventually did. If I had not verified it's presense, I would have driven home empty handed. Maybe this employee could use a little more training?

I highly recommend using their order online for in store pickup for the best pricing since the store will follow the online pricing vs the shelf sticker price. Online orders come with a paper bag that has a handle which makes it nice and easy to carry out. There are two floors to the store, with the majority of home improvement things being on the lower level.
