This is a local gem which I try to check periodically. I bought some cute measuring spoons here, as well as a French press coffee pot. The layout is a bit tight, but they use the small space very efficiently, and have a well-curated selection of quirky, classic and practical goods. Definitely worth a look if you're in the market for cooking or baking items, but prefer the small business experience to wandering Bed Bath and Beyond for plain stuff you can buy anywhere. read more

I love this little store! They somehow manage to have everything I've ever needed from Tupperware to rice cookers to oven mitts, even though the place is quite small. The selection of kid's cookware is awesome! I try to get a goofy salt and pepper set for my clumsy spouse every year and they always a few fun new ones to choose from. The teapot on my stove, the cheese knives in my drawer, the coffee press on my kitchen table and the Dutch oven above my cabinets are all from Kitchenwitch. As are the Green Street and Forest Hills Orange Line magnets on my fridge. Kitchenwitch and its previous incarnation, Gadgets, have been invaluable during my time in JP. Their magnetic measurement conversions have been a godsend and their staff has always been super friendly regardless of whether I'm holiday shopping or just picking up a small item while waiting for a chair at Sal's to open. A four-star establishment on most days, largely due to size issues out of its control, I'm bumping it up to five for a staff that's unafraid to do what its customers won't. I'm sorry, but when you allow your child to run rampant in a store filled with breakables, sharps and other various not-for-kids items, your child's newfound playthings are just waiting to become lost inventory or, worse, a liability suit. The staff is well within its rights to protect both the merchandise and its customers. "Oh no, you can't touch that. You're not allowed to travel in here. Stand over there." That's not rude language. That's guidance and direction, something the child in question clearly lacked. "JP, aka the land of babies and toddlers, maybe you should consider finding a way to be courteous and civil to the children of your customers.: Oh, SO many things wrong with that statement. First off, civility and courtesy goes both ways. When you're not courteous or civil enough to keep your child's hands off the fragile merchandise or to keep him or her from being underfoot, the store's representatives have every right to tell the child the things you won't. That's called raising a kid, and it's something a village has to do every so often. Although, in this case, maybe that village should be Roslindale Village. Seriously? You're going to come into JP from Roslindale and tell people how to run their businesses around your kid? Take it walking. In some cases, this may be "the land of babies and toddlers (not at my pub, but I digress)," but even the diverse or imperfect parents of JP teach their kids how to act in public and not to grab or push over every breakable on Centre Street. Your kid needs a tactile fix? Take it to Boing. Kitchenwitch is a handy, friendly, well-stocked little lifesaver of a home store. I'm glad it's in my neighborhood and I'll continue to frequent it as often as possible. It may not have a name suited to Roslindale's tastes, but then again there are some folks out there who think Sarah is a bit too biblical a name for a child and something you only name a kid when you want them to be a mediocre singer/songwriter who'll be playing the opening slot at Club Passim until she's a senior citizen. read more

I had a lovely afternoon free to wander the streets of JP, and I made it my mission to visit the tiny shops down Centre that I've never had the chance to duck into; it was a fortuitous coincidence that I've been charged with buying some fun gifts for a chef friend's bridal shower. Kitchenwitch is perfect for straight-up necessary items like knives, kettles, pans and pots, and slightly less necessary things like moose-shaped cookie cutters, lip-shaped chip clips, a cherry pitter that looks like a robot and those retro pinup napkins ("she was one cocktail away from proving his mother right"). While I was perusing the tightly packed aisles, the cashier helped a dancer and her boyfriend find a proper under-$20 Secret Santa gift ("all I know is that she gardens?"). I had such a fun time looking around that I didn't feel bad leaving empty-handed; next time I'll make a decision between the owl salt and pepper shakers and the heart-shaped ice cube trays. read more

How bewitching... I like it every witch way... Blech aghh corny witch puns... This shop is completely charming-- crammed full of all things kitchen, you can't turn around without bumping into some adorable kitchen gadget you didn't know you need. Cow shaped ice cream scoop? Where have you been all my life!! If you buy your basics here you'll go broke. I'd suggest coming in to browse- the quirky offerings work best when you have a chance to peruse the many shelves and discover what might be missing in your culinary life. Their selection is surprisingly large for such a little storefront, packed with cook books, speciality items, kitchen utensils, gadgets and more. The staff was cheerful and totally willing to offer suggestions or chit chat about which recipe to try or whether to make your own syrups for your Sodastream. I walked out with plenty of gifts (for myself and others), plus a renewed desire to go home and get creative in the kitchen. Oh and with a cow-shaped ice cream scoop. read more

I liked the old store, but I love the new take, especially since I no longer have the urge to compulsively tidy everything. The store is small, but it is packed with wonderful kitchen things. Sure, there are some attention-grabbing pricey unitaskers, but there are many more practical and reasonably priced kitchen essentials. It's a great place to pick up extra ramekins, tart shells, baking pans, pastry tools... The owners/employees are really nice. If you're looking for something specific they'll lead you right to it but they also give you space to browse. This is a lovely store to have in the neighborhood. read more

I love this place. Full of items for the kitchen. The owner (Rose) is very sweet and will chat anyone up. Ive been in 2x and both times she chatted me up casually but clearly knew the regulars on a first name, personal basis. (gotta love jp!) A little pricier than bigger stores but that should not surprise anyone. Some items average prices, however they also sell upscale brands such as bodum tea kettles, le crueset cookware....Plus, rent in jp is probably through the roof.... read more

The cool, the unusual, the everything you need for your kitchen place. Small store with big fun. You name it, they have it. You don't need it, but it's too cool of a gadget to pass up, they've got it. My husband went for the super sleek onion chopping goggles...yes, they do work. I went for the cake tester to make sure my pink lemonade cupcakes are done. Allow yourself lots of time to browse and be prepared to get a little cozy with other shoppers. You will not leave empty handed or as wealthy as when you arrived, but it's so worth it. A true gem. read more

While this store has a wide array of nice kitchenware, it's really nothing to write home about. The employees rarely move from their location behind the front desk and the store is so tiny that everything is just jammed onto their many shelves. I contrast this to the local kitchenware store that we used to go to when we lived in Brooklyn where employees spoke passionately about whatever kitchen-related question you might have and would order anything for you that they didn't already carry. My main complaint, however, is their store hours. As it is, since I have fairly standard working hours, the only time I can go is on a Saturday (or maybe Sunday if I happen to catch the 5 hour window that they are open) as during the week the store closes by 6 PM. If they only opened one hour later in the morning and stayed open one hour later in the evening this place would be significantly more accessible. read more

In three words: small, unique, pricey. With no big box or retail chains in sight in JP (which is refreshing), it's really nice to have a store like this available. They offer everything (even accessories for the kitchen sink!) you could need for your kitchen, cabinet, fridge and curio. It's great fun to come in here and punch around when you've got some time to kill - the [old] name really suits - there are so many "gadgets" to play with. You'll find things you never knew existed - or better yet - you never knew you needed! The space is cramped and loaded with product, so I wouldn't recommend bringing children, pets, or clumsy shoppers in tow. No room for a stroller - absolutely not. The service has been welcoming and friendly for the most part. On occasion, I do get that "holier than thou attitude" that seems to grace most store fronts on Center Street. Still not sure what it is...maybe I need to wear more funky hats from Salmagundi? Needless to say, I've been a few times both for myself and shopping for gifts. It's a good experience every time. A little pricey, but these aren't things you're going to find at Wal-Mart or Crate and Barrel. read more

Always prefer to shop in small local stores. Paying a little more is well worth supporting local businesses, supporting my community and keeping money in the state. But one thing I expect is customer service better than what is provide at big box stores. Unfortunately customer service is not holding up. When customer service is defined as a customer providing a service to the store it's time to move on. Seems that JP local businesses have evolved into local monopolies. Knowing that there customers are local and prefer to shop locally they act with indifference. Sorry folks but local doesn't excuse indifferent customer service. read more

I could spend millions of dollars and twice as long in this store. I want everything in it. The coolest kitchen stuff around. It's tiny and has a ton of stuff, so give yourself some time to explore. The staff won't mind and will help you if you need it. If you wondered if it exists, it does. And Kitchenwitch has it. I think they do drop-off knife sharpening there as well. Win!! And I know they aren't open all hours, but they're just a little store. Everyone needs time to not be at work. Be gentle. Go on the weekend if you can't make it during the week. I really enjoyed my visit to this unique little kitchen shop. It is rather small, so I would not go here if you're looking to outfit your entire kitchen. It's more of a place to come in and find a few items. They also have a great selection of items that would make excellent host/hostess gifts such as wine bottle openers, quirky napkins, tea towels and aprons. The staff was a bit stand-offish, but in such a small space, that's not really a bad thing. You're certainly able to find someone when you need them. read more

I love kitchenwitch. As an avid cook, there is always something that I need here. The people are friendly and they also have a knife sharpening service with 24-hour turnaround. Wonderful selection, competitive pricing and the joy of supporting a truly local business. The reorganization of the space has worked wonders -- I can actually find what I came in for! Clearly the owner(s) have thought carefully about every item they carry and I'm happy with and use often everything I've purchased here. Maybe it's my age (middle) -- I sometimes notice a lack of welcome when I come in. If the person/people at the front are on the phone, writing or typing, or talking with one another, I am not acknowledged and that's a BIG thing for me. Don't get me wrong -- I don't want the "How are you today?" that drives me mad, just a hello, and perhaps "Let me know if there's anything I can help you with." Even a smile and a wave will do when they're tied up with other people and media. Personal interaction is one huge reason I shop local. As another reviewer states, Rose can "chat up" anybody -- perhaps not the best choice of words as it connotes insincerity to me and that's never the feeling I have gotten from her. I appreciate any shopkeeper's commitment to personalize the customer's experience and hope that she will share her ethos with her staff. read more

This store is fine- not the best selection I've ever seen, and often they are out of or don't carry items I am looking for. My main issue, however, is the manner with which one of the people working in the store addressed my son. He is almost three, and was standing calmly near me while I looked at the potholders. He was holding one of the salt shakers. The person came over and said to him, "Oh no, you can't touch that. You're not allowed to travel in here. Stand over there". She took the salt shaker out of his hand, used a jerky tone, and implied that he wasn't allowed... I'm not sure- in the store? Or once he was in the store, he shouldn't be able to move from one spot? I was taken aback by the tone- shocked, in fact, that anyone in a position of customer service would talk this way TO A CHILD, let alone a child who was being completely well behaved and being watched carefully by his parent. I wouldn't be writing this review if she had used a nice tone and said something like, "Please don't touch anything". Instead, she chose to be ridiculous, cause my child to cry and loudly proclaim multiple times, "She was being mean to me! I don't want her to be mean to me!" etc. By the by, the name Kitchenwitch sucks. That is the stupidest f-ing name I've ever heard of. Maybe they should consider changing it to KitchenA**hole, as that's a little more fitting. Maybe the Kitchena**hole people are jaded, maybe they've seen kids break their stuff before- but my kid wasn't doing that, and if he did break something, I would have happily paid for it. If you're going to run a store in JP, aka the land of babies and toddlers, maybe you should consider finding a way to be courteous and civil to the children of your customers. I might be back, but only because it's more convenient for me than going somewhere else- no one would be such a jerk to my son at Crate and Barrel, plus they'd probably have what I was looking for. I dig Kitchenwitch. I even like saying the name fast. But what I really love about it is that, when I got the summer itch to make popsicles and needed popsicle molds RIGHT THEN AND THERE, I went to Kitchenwitch, asked if they had any, and then had about 4 different shapes of cleverly designed BPA-free (shush, I'm paranoid!) molds to choose from. I've bought so many useful gadgets/staples here at different times, and have always had a nice little chatty interaction with whoever is manning the register. Kitchenwitch : specifically designed to steal your attention, your affection and your $$$. Who ever curates the inventory gets a gold star: the store is always interesting to meander through and I consistently find unique items that I absolutely need. There are like 197 different types of pepper grinders, 47 different aprons, 25 types of miniature teaspoons, and an entire section of yuppy hipster child tupperware and eating accessories, which kind of freaks me out and has me questioning the type of person who buys that crap. Anyhoosies, I love this place, because I love cooking, can stomach a little bit of baking, and really like having nice quality, cute stuff to work with. This store is packed full of useful home goods. It can be a little hard to find items but the staff is very helpful and knows where everything is located. It's conveniently located on centre street and even allows you to bring your dog in with you whole you shop. They also trade in old soda stream cartridges which is very helpful! read more

I love Kitchenwitch! They carry awesome stuff I used to have to order online or hit Newbury Street for. I have always found the staff to be really helpful and sweet, always willing to order something or make a suggestion- they have even helped me not purchase the wrong thing even though it kept them from making money. I really never felt compelled to jump into the Yelp discussion but then I saw the angry review about the kid and I think giving a business such a low rating over such a petty gripe is insanely unfair so now I'm jumping in as a rational consumer. You can not like their wares (take off a star or two) or dislike the name (but frankly we live in a neighborhood where a respected restaurant called it's bar addition TT bar and no one batted an eyelash- say it out loud people, it's not good!) But that review was just vindictive. Frankly I find that most JP businesses get treated like playgrounds by moms who see no reason to control their little ones and have a tantrum (as evidenced by the irrational fit about the store's name- grow up "mom") when the world doesn't roll out the playmat for tummy time with their child. I've adjusted to this annoying aspect of the neighborhood I love- one wrong move and someone is gasping about what has been done to "my child!" but this is ridiculous. It's a store full of breakables, yeah, they didn't want your kid manhandling stuff- hell I'm frequently afraid I'll break something in there and I guarantee I'm more careful than your kid. Don't trash a good local business because they aren't kissing your kid's diapered tush. These are good people running a good shop and they are doing a damn good job of it. I will go on record as saying that I am a fitness professional working in downtown boston, I am in no way affiliated with Kitchenwitch, just a bit disgusted when Yelp is abused by folks with a petty axe to grind. read more

This is a shop that runs wide, not deep--a large collection of kitchen items, gadgets, utensils, but not the biggest choice within each category. This said, you can usually find something you can't live without--bamboo bag clips, juicers in the shape of a flying saucer, oversized mugs. You'll have to find it on your own, though, as you squeeze down the narrow aisles. Unless you're a local J.P. resident who pops in frequently, you won't get help. The owners prefer to kibbitz with friends rather than be interrupted to give attention to business. read more
