After lunch, we decided to go on a stroll and explore the stores around. We're always in the area looking for new restaurants to try but never really realized there were so many cool stores in the neighborhood! We stumbled upon Boston General Store & it's literally awesome! This store is a great place to go to get unique gifts for others, or for yourself, who don't really need anything but nice to have. I loved the stationary goods section and was ecstatic to find they had mechanical pencils with 2.0 mm lead! This was my favorite lead to write with growing up but I was never able to find them in the U.S. (I would bring these pencils back from Asia). So, it was very nostalgic for me when I saw them & wrote on the notepad with it! I didn't end up purchasing it because I found $12 to be quite steep for one singular pencil that I have no use for currently BUT I do see myself coming back for it haha. They also had a bunch of different home essentials like soaps, honey, & jams here, which I found to be pretty cool & unique. I would definitely come back again to grab some pens & to find gifts! On our way back from breakfast we happened upon this place. I immediately saw that they carried Forestbound canvas tote bags!! You know the ones that have New England or Escape on them? Anyhoo I went in to see what their pricing was... it was comparable if not better than purchasing it directly from the website. Hint - they offer free shipping in case you want to order it later after your trip. I've been on a stationery kick of late and it began when I went home so there I was basking in this cute as-hell shop that spoke to me on so many different levels: bath products, tea, books, candles etc. If you need to purchase a gift for someone or Heck just treat yourself come check this place out. Boston General Store is a pretty good spot for purchasing gifts for that friend or family member that has everything. They have a big variety of home products - kitchen, cleaning, coffee, etc. I picked up some bee's wax wraps, something I've been meaning to get, but haven't made the jump. It's roughly a handful of dollars more expensive than Amazon prices, but support your local businesses! Staff were very nice and friendly. They are asking that only 8 people be in the shop at a time, so you never feel crowded inside. read more

I personally liked their bags, such as the TM 1985 Hansen Tote, with the luscious-smelling leather and belt straps for handles, and their vintage clothing collection (loved the vintage Boy Scouts of America coat and the old school league shirts!). The amount of hard to find items in one place was a dream and the service and knowledge of the two ladies on staff made my experience in there even better. Looked like a cool shop but I didn't feel comfortable staying there longer than a couple of minutes. Someone was checking out when I walked in and as soon as they left the store staff absolutely ridiculed him. Literally picked apart everything this poor patron of their store did from what he bought to the way he stood to his tone of voice. I didn't feel comfortable sticking around to give them anything that they might make fun of me for so I left as quickly as I could. Just know if you choose to give this store you're money you're going to become the next subject of the staff's own personal cruel comedy show. read more

I visited on small business Saturday when the store had a 10% off sale. The cashier was very friendly and walked around the store with me to help me find gifts for my family. In particular, they have lots of nice little trinkets for the home, for the outdoors and for the kitchen. There were lots of local and artisanal items that you wouldn't be able to find easily elsewhere. Most atrocious customer service I've ever experienced. Walked into this store with my girlfriend on a Saturday. Maybe one other person in the store. I asked the girl at the counter, "Hi! What kind of fuel does this lantern take?" She said, "You know, that's one of the most frequently asked questions I receive... I like to refer people to their website" "....okay, thanks" A deep sigh, and she gives "I guess I can look it up..." I looked at a candle and mentioned how I liked the smell, and she said "that's actually the smell that's filling the store usually. We have the diffusers set up right there and we also carry the incent" She actually said incent, not incense. While this store has some pretty cool merchandise, I don't want to support a place whose employees literally don't even know their own products AND show zero willingness to help a potential customer in learning about the products to facilitate a purchase. read more

I went here today to get a gift for a friend and left with a couple of things. The store is ascetically pleasing, organized and there's a variety of gift options to choose from. I did a loop around the shop looking at all the options and ended up purchasing a soy candle and hot chocolate that was from a local farm. I was pleased they could gift wrap it for me as it made my life easier and they did a really nice job (they wrapped the gifts in kraft paper and twine). Very beautiful coffee pressers, tea soakers, general glassware for caffeine items etc. The decor is very elegant, and combines casual with everyday classy. Downside? The latest addition to Coolidge Corner neighborhood, Boston General Store seeks to provide a modernized version of the purveyors of old. From Japanese pour-over coffee systems and cutting boards to spiced honeys and scented candles, this store is going to be a real boon when gift hunting. On first look it may seem like an attempt at an adult Urban Outfitters, but the stock is clearly of the highest quality and the atmosphere brings polished wood and leather to mind. The staff is cheerful and fairly knowledgeable about their eclectic inventory. If I had one qualm, it's that many of the items did not have price tags. That said, the store has been open less than a week at the time I write this. I'll certainly keep Boston General Store in mind come the holiday rush. read more

Agree so totally with Alex M review..my experience..absolutely. Went in Sunday, two girls who work there..gabbing amongst themselves. No customer service at all... only when I left..did they say GOODBYE... I almost turned around and said to them..gee ..it would have been nice to greet a customer when they come in. I live in the immediate area and have gone in several times to look at their items, which are fairly over-priced..but generally I leave disappointed with the poor, poor customer service..Customers this wkend were asking about their xmas return policy and they were told in very rude terms..sorry, no holiday return policy..30 days only; to which, at least 2 customers..put their selections back and promptly left the store. Gee..when it was small business shopping day, why not be more customer friendly? read more

Popped in yesterday while in the area, it's a gift shop filled with an interesting array of high end items, including french toothpaste, soy candles in pretty jars, high end tea, jams, honey, a lovely selection of stationary and a variety of other items. A nice place for a hostess/host gift or a gift for an apartment warming. There is a large home-brewing section as well. From some of the brands I saw they carry, I think the store is well curated as previous folks have noted, and generally geared to hip, urban dwellers. I did not purchase anything, but clerk was friendly, we spoke briefly about the store and the weather, etc. Seems like a very nice addition to the Coolidge Corner area. read more

I absolutely love this store. I was familiar with the selection because I used to visit their stand in the SOWA market, but when they opened a brick + mortar I was over the moon! Their selection is curated but authentic, and more importantly, everything is usable. I have several coffee apparatuses and kitchen tools, and I happily use them every day. I came in on a Sunday looking to do some early Christmas shopping. The atmosphere of the store was really cozy and quaint with a lot of cute items. I asked the girl at the counter for some advice, gave her my budget and some ideas of what I had in mind and she showed me around the store, pointing out some items she thought I might like. She was really friendly and helpful without being overbearing at all. She pointed out the greeting cards section and even showed me a few of her personal favorites, which was a really nice touch as there was a big selection! I ended up picking out a few of the soaps, which she told me were designed at Boston General Store, and a few Christmas cards and I couldn't be happier with my purchase or the whole experience.
