I visited the Jamaica Plain shop today with my brother, on what happened to be the 27th anniversary of my father's passing. What could have been a heavy, emotional day was transformed into something unexpectedly meaningful, thanks in large part to the experience I had with Jessen. He spent well over an hour with me, patiently walking through countless combinations of styles, shapes, and colors -- not rushing, not upselling, just exploring what really worked. He was thoughtful, kind, and extraordinarily knowledgeable, and it was clear he genuinely enjoyed the process of helping me find the right hat. That enthusiasm was contagious; time absolutely flew by. I left with a beautiful hat and a matching scarf, each with its own story -- down to where the wool came from and how it was made. That level of care and passion isn't something you can fake. It's obvious that Jessen and Andria care deeply about their craft, their customers, and the experience they create in the shop. This was, without question, the best experience I've ever had in a hat store. The selection is fantastic, but it's the heart, expertise, and hospitality that make Salmagundi truly special. If you're anywhere near Boston and even thinking about a hat, do yourself a favor and go see Andria and Jessen. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

It was a chaotic environment to work in, there was no level of respect or professionalism from management. It was to the point that if I made a mistake I was being belittled and cursed at and told "You're f***ing stupid!" by management. People are only hired here to be paid and walk out, and management has no problem with it either as they don't show any effort to fix the professionalism while they act the same way towards their own employees and customers. It was upon my decision that I decided to quit and telling my manager that I was quitting he just hung up the call on me. I do not in any way recommend that this place has any people considering to work here and any considering to buy here.

I bought two simply GORGEOUS scarves that were actually priced lower than what I initially expected. A lot of the reviews of this place just do not do it justice! Let's clear it up. Is this boutique "too expensive"? NO! It's only too expensive if you're not familiar with the brands that it carries. These pieces are not overpriced or marked high beyond other retailers. Additionally, I saw at least one brand that's very hard to find in the US. The simple fact that I would be able to try on pieces from that brand without having to buy them up front and pay for shipping from Europe is a huge positive. Is the store "too cramped"? Hardly. It's a small store, but they have a very clean, beautiful layout. I was in there with two staff, a delivery guy, and probably four other shoppers, and I still had plenty room to be off in my own little world. I really enjoyed the ambiance of the store. Are the employees "rude and unfriendly"? Not at all!! My goodness. Quite the opposite. One woman behind the desk greeted me immediately and asked if I needed anything, another smiled at me, and I made conversation later (twice) and was met with receptive faces and eager replies both times. One of the women was less talkative, but she was busy and I wasn't talking with her directly. She did smile and look up and even laugh, though. She was far from rude. Basically, this is a lovely store, and you've probably got to be pretty rude yourself to think that the employees are rude. Additionally, if you're out of touch with the brands or the prices of pieces like what's carried at Mint Julep, you might think it's overpriced, but it's really not.

They gift wrap and sell balloons, so it is THE spot for birthdays and holidays. If you become a member, you get sweet discounts, and the 5th Sunday of the month also has special bonuses. Best of all, there's a sign in the window with 2 different names on it every day, and if one of those names is yours, big prize! Even if we aren't planning a trip to Boing, it's always a treat to check the names. The people who work at this store are friendly and really knowledgeable. Today is my birthday and I went into Gray Mist, with every intention of purchasing a Sola cube. But after the unpleasant interaction with the dog and manager, I left. I will never patronize GrayMist again. I have run a pet sitting business for over two decades, and if a shop dog frightens me, rest assured, it will frighten other customers.
